Chapter 2 - Edited
"Mama, are we almost there yet," the cute little voice asked for the third time in five minutes. Jacob Walters was the cutest four and a half year old in the world. Or at least in his mother's biased opinion he was. However, that cuteness was tested when his impatience turned him in to a broken record as was the current case.
Noelle Walters took her friends suggestion to visit the Kingston farm to see Santa when their visit to the mall turned out to be unsuccessful. A farm with an open, outdoor space seemed much more ideal which made persuading Noelle that much easier. It was only the last ten minutes in their trip that her mood dipped slightly due to her son's restlessness. The trip from her hometown to the farm was only around 25 minutes according to GPS so she felt his questioning was highly unnecessary. She took a deep breath before saying anything, knowing that as soon as they arrived and he was out of his carseat, he'd go back to being the sweetest kid in the world.
When Noelle discovered she was pregnant over five years ago, she'd just began her final year of college and was terrified. Her longterm boyfriend turned out to be a cheating jerk and to top it off denied he was the father. Not wanting anything to do with him, and seeing how easy it was for him to want nothing to do with his offspring, she decided it was best to go at it alone. It wasn't easy to tell her parent's what was going on, but her anxiety was quickly turned in to relief when their reaction was nothing but positive. They'd even offered to help her through the pregnancy as well as the first few months of motherhood. She was certain she wouldn't have made it through without their help and would never take them for granted ever again.
With the help of her family, Noelle was also able to finish her schooling with a double degree in fine arts and computer science. Since then she slowly turned her web design work into a successful business with the added perk of being able to work from home and look after her son. She was constantly counting her blessings with being able to have the best of both worlds.
Jacob had been very easy to raise compared to many stories she'd heard. His temper was mild and he hardly threw tantrums which Noelle was endlessly thankful for. At times she worried she wasn't fully equipped to raise a boy, but soon discovered all any kid needs is a safe and secure home as well as love and attention from their parent or parents. She only hoped he would continue to be the sweet natured boy who cared for animals and nature. Who cared more for his mama than anyone else in the world. She knew it wouldn't last forever and he'd eventually grow out of enjoying affection from his mother, but she would bask in it for as long as it was still available to her.
As they turned into the parking lot of the farm, Noelle's excitement level began to rise. Her love for Halloween and Christmas were unmatched in the family, but Jacob was a close second. His joy for any gift he received always made her want to cry happy tears and want to stop time to hold on to the moment forever. When Jacob's repetitive questioning turned into excited cheers it made her heart feel full. She felt ten feet tall and relieved this last minute plan was working out well so far.
When they entered the main area, with Jacob leading the way with urgency, Noelle couldn't help but let her jaw hang in awe. It was as if she'd been transported into a dream. Every idea she created in her head as a child when she thought of the North Pole seemed to be painted in the scenes before her. I can't imagine anyone here ever having a bad day she thought to herself. The winter decorations were nothing short of perfect, the music was playing the best of holiday tunes, and the smells were that of snow and cinnamon. She could see herself getting lost here forever and when she looked down at her son, she saw a bright look of wonder in his eyes.
The place was packed with people and she worried it would only get busier as midday closed in. With that she decided they should squeeze in their visit to Santa first, and then browse the rest of the stalls afterward. It appeared a line was already forming from where she could see so she hoisted her little man up and made her way to the end of the line quickly.
Though the line was long, there was plenty of distractions to keep Jacob occupied and full of glee. There were still about a dozen kids ahead of them, but they could at least see Santa now. Though Noelle didn't want to stare much, she felt like this particular Santa seemed rather large for his chair. Not in a bad way, just like he was an average person only bigger. Maybe he was the real Santa and of course he'd be larger than life, who knew. She didn't hold on to the thought long enough to ponder more because the line kept moving at a decent pace.
When they were finally the next in line, she could feel the waves of excitement radiating from Jacob. She hoped Jacob would speak loud enough so she could hear what he's hoping for this Christmas and she could make sure she has it all before it was too late. Her parents and her agreed that he'd been an incredibly good boy this year and would get everything he wanted if it was available. Unless he asked for the moon. Then she'd have to have a talk to him about how owning it would be too expensive for most people, but she would try to save up for it.
Now that they were even closer to Santa she could hear his voice and the low register of it. She always imagined her Santa having a somewhat deep voice, but not like this. This one was rather...attractive? She quickly shook those thoughts away and chided herself internally for thinking such silly thoughts. She was here for Jacob and to get more immersed in the holiday spirit. There is no time to be crushing on Santa Claus.
The child before them finally finished listing everything he wanted. It was a very detailed and robust list and Noelle saw the kid's parents and their overwhelmed faces. She hoped they taught him to be grateful or she could see him throwing a fit when all fifty items weren't under the tree. Especially the puppy. She couldn't see the boy being able to handle a plastic horse, let alone any live animal. She herself learned at a young age that pet's weren't the best gift if the people receiving it weren't ready to handle them. The lesson came to her when one of her aunts gifted her a goldfish that died shortly after.
As soon as they motioned for Jacob to come up, he froze and turned into a shy creature. It was adorable and temporary as he tended to be when it came to unfamiliar people. Realizing it was Santa must have made it easier to get passed the worries because he was instantly back to the relaxed, joyful child as he was placed on Santa's lap. As Noelle stepped a bit closer to them to listen in and take notes, Jacob's Christmas list took a rather interesting turn.
