Chapter 5: The Cool Down
“First day of school in thirty years,” Kirishima lied an arm around your shoulders. “How ya feeling girl?”
“Better than ever,” you snickered. It’s funny how Kirishima would always check up on you whether you wanted him to or not. He’s just a nice guy! “You know, you really don’t have to keep checking up on me. I can do everything on my own now,” To say the least, you do need boundaries which Kirishima seems to misunderstand.
“I thought I was being nice, sorry,” Kirishima apologized although he really wasn’t. Is there anything wrong in being nice. The boy had taken a seat in the empty desk beside your own. It was brought in for the only other student who passed the entrance exam besides yourself.“Hey, so like, if you don’t mind how was school for you the first time you went here? I heard from Todoroki that you used to date his dad and that you were at the top of the class and stuff. Even I can’t compete with Midoriya, Todoroki and Bakugou!” As much as Kirishima claims he can’t compete with the big three of the class, everyone tells him he’s right up there with them. After all he’s heroic in your eyes and that’s all that matters.
“Yeah… All that’s true,” you tilted your head to one side. Out of everyone, Kirishima just mentioned, you haven’t personally met one of them. “Who’s Bakugou? I know I haven’t met the entire class but you do talk about him quite a bit,” so much so that you’re starting to think those two are an item. That thought in itself is weird on your end because back in your time homosexuality was frowned upon. Thirty years later, you’re sure society is more welcoming of the idea and so are you. You were never against it but of course back then you had to bite your tongue. Although it’d be wrong to assume that Kirishima and Bakugou are dating. Kirishima gets along with just about everyone he meets. Bakugou is probably his best friend and they have a bromance going on.
Luckily, Kirishima was happy to introduce you to his good friend. He stretched out his neck, looking above the rows of heads who were busy preparing themselves for the class ahead. “This is Bakugou. Hey Bro! You should meet the new girl. I think you’ll like her!” Kirishima pointed at few seats ahead of himself to a blonde sat at his desk. The male was vibrating? No, he was shuddering in a blind rage while curses were mumbled under his breath. How can one boy be so angry? Imagine if he was an elf, it’d be ten times worse.
Bakugou got up from his seat with a heated glare to his crimson eyes. Thankfully, the glare wasn’t directed at yourself. You’d hate to create enemies on the first day. “Quit talking about me behind my back Shitty Hair!” Wow, deep voice. This guy is intimidating.
“What? I wasn’t-” Kirishima choked on his own words.
“If you wanna get technical, Bakugou’s back was turned and you were talking about him,” you couldn’t help but smile and shrug. Personally, you love being a smartass to others.
Kirishima actually frowned, “but I didn’t say anything bad...”
“I know you didn’t. Lighten up.”
“What’s the big hairy ass deal with you?” Bakugou’s crimson orbs narrowed in on you. “I don’t get it, everybody thinks you’re the shit like All Might. What, you survive drowning and suddenly you’re a celebrity? That’s literally what a lifeguard does for a living...” That’s such an interesting idea. You’ve always wondered the same thing actually. Why are people who brush themselves with death or are physically different get fame? Like those cancer survivors, guys who chop off their own limbs in mountains, babies born with deformities and even more to add. There’s curiosity there that’s for sure. P. T. Barnum was right, people are attracted to the mysterious and the macabre.
“Bakugou you can’t treat girls like you do let alone ask people that sort of stuff,” Kirishima practically snapped at Bakugou. Womanly respect at it’s finest with this Shark Boy. Now you’re starting to understand their relationship better. Bakugou is the bad while Kirishima is good and they equal each other out.
“I’m starting to feel like I’m Harry Potter or something,” you snickered.
“Harry who?” Bakugou cocked a brow.
“Harry Potter… He’s a book character who survived a deadly spell and magically he became famous. Sort of like me right now…” Seriously, why does a brush with death make you famous? Well, you’re not entirely sure if you’re famous for living within ice for three decades. It’s just an assumption since the entire class knew exactly who you were before you’ve even met them and how Endeavor basically told you to stay out of the public for a while. Yeah, no doubt you’re famous. Can’t believe it hadn’t dawned on you before now.
“Well bitch, I don’t like you,” Bakugou admits without any difficulty. Could you really blame him?
“Bakugou don’t call her a bitch!” Kirishima gasped.
“Your honesty is appreciated,” you smiled genuinely at Bakugou. Bakugou smirked back as you’re the first person to not fight his rude antics but instead embrace them.
“How are you so okay with being insulted?” Kirishima’s head began to hurt just thinking of the possible reasons why.
“Endeavor wasn’t the nicest guy back then… Still isn’t now but I take insults as compliments honestly. It lets me know what I’m doing right and where I need to improve,” there’s not even any sense to let insults get to you especially if you’re striving to become a hero. Even the best and most cherished heroes out there have a large following of haters; don’t let the haters get to you.
Bakugou genuinely looked blown away, there’s not a trace of anger left to be found. “You’re right Shitty Hair… I do like her.”
“Cool…” Kirishima stalled for a moment. His mind was officially blown. Even Bakugou doesn’t treat him this nicely let alone with this much respect.
Mr. Aizawa entered the classroom right when you were about to speak up. Behind him, a purple haired male followed closely behind him who didn’t look the least bit thrilled to be here. They both conversed for a minute before the one in purple went to his assigned desk at the back of the classroom. Bakugou and Kirishima occupied it and well, all that the male could do is narrow his gaze in on them both. “You’re in my seat,” he spoke with poison laced within his voice.
“Well we now know the other prick who got accepted into the class,” Bakugou got off the face of the desk all to stomp away.
Kirishima immediately felt awkward, “congrats Shinsou.” Kirishima stood up from his new classmate’s seat. “Teach has been telling us how hard you’ve been working to-”
“I know,” Shinsou huffed all the while taking his seat. “I’ve heard the same thing a million times over the last week I don’t need to hear it again.”
“Oh…” Kirishima blinked rapidly. It’s like he got a bullet through the chest and went to his seat.
Shinsou, yeah you knew him from the entrance exam and he wasn’t the most cheerful guy then either. He’d only sit around and death stare you down. He’s practically the mirror image of your teacher who doubled as his mentor yet as of right now they don’t act anything alike. Shinsou felt your unwavering gaze on him and turned to you. “Do you need something?” He spoke in the most disinterested way possible.
And I thought Enji was bad back then… “Way to sound ungrateful…” You gained the attention of the entire class. “I get that you’re annoyed with the constant praise but be thankful that you’re getting any period. You don’t have to be rude either when Kirishima did nothing wrong. With Bakugou it’s just name calling but at least he’s grateful to be here, unlike you,” the desk beneath your fingertips began to frost over. Your quirk becomes a little erratic whenever your emotions aren’t in check.
“Me… Ungrateful…” Shinsou tuts.
“I know what you’re thinking Hitoshi,” Aizawa spoke up. “I suggest you bite your tongue. None of it is fact.”
“I’ve been working myself to the bone to finally get where I’m standing today…” Shinsou stood up to further prove his point. “I had to work hard unlike you.”
The class didn’t know what to do. To step in? To ignore it? To say something? This could get even more out of hand. Both Todoroki and Kirishima had the same idea, to step in. Bakugou made sure to hold Kirishima back while Iida did the same to Todoroki. You stood up, actually stooping down to Shinsou’s level. “Unlike me,” you crossed your arms. “Let’s get all confusion out of the way now. What the hell are you thinking?”
Todoroki let out a breath of relief. You’re taking this in such a level headed manor compared to how you were butting heads with Enji that first day you emerged from the ice. Everything is going to be fine. He hopes.
“You… Someone else could have had your spot in the hero course. Someone who better deserves it,” Shinsou wasn’t intimidated by you.
“What did I tell you Hitoshi?” Aizawa rose his voice again.
“Well you already dug yourself a hole so keep going,” you suggested to the purple haired male.
“You didn’t do anything to deserve your place in this class. Your status in the news and Pro Hero Endeavor practically made it so you didn’t have to try to be here. It was all handed to you,” your eye began to twitch. Your classmates knew very well that Shinsou was speaking nonsense.
“Have you ever heard of the saying ‘Assuming makes an ass out of you and me’? I mean where in the living hell did you find that information?” You’re practically shouting now. At this moment Todoroki knew this argument had took the turn he feared the most. “Back before I became trapped in ice, I was number two in the Big Three then. It wasn’t easy getting there… When I came out of that ice, I was told thirty years passed, my family shunned me, my status in UA meant nothing. My rank and reputation has been knocked down and I have to rebuild it all! Endeavor isn’t helping me with shit! He’s only supplying me a home and nothing more. I didn’t even know I was famous here either until Bakugou said something,” everyone glanced at Bakugou for a second. “I had to rebuild my strength and body heat in order to get reaccepted into UA. I’ll even hand over my acceptance letter if you need proof that I got into this school fair and square. I missed out on the life I could have lived and I’m going to do everything in my power to become the next Number One. If anything, you have it easier than me because your mentor works here and OH LOOK! You somehow got put into your mentor’s class too! Yeah… Saying I didn’t have to do anything to get into this class when I’m sure Aizawa pulled at least one string to get you here,” you flipped through the binder on your desk. You had your Acceptance hologram in there for sentimental value but you ripped it out and shoved it into Shinsou’s grasp. You began stomping to the front of the class and stopped before your new teacher. “May I be excused for a little while?”
“We’ll start class in an hour,” Aizawa excused the entire class with a wave of his hand.
Everyone left except for Shinsou. He stood there and held up that black hologram disk before his face. “I told you to bite your tongue,” Aizawa took the disk away from his apprentice since he doesn’t deserve to view your acceptance speech. “We argued over this exact topic before you came in here, yesterday and the day before. I’ve personally watched over her training. She’s worked harder than all of us and she has an even longer road ahead of her.”
“She’s had her moment in the spotlight… Just because she was big then doesn’t mean she’ll be big now. Look at who’s the Number One right now! Endeavor isn’t a good hero in the slightest yet he’s at the top,” Shinsou isn’t accepting of you and doesn’t show any signs of letting up.
“I haven’t known (Y/n) for very long but she has the potential to be a phenomenal hero in the future. My hopes are high with her… I hold her higher than I do you right about now,” Shinsou nearly gasped hearing Aizawa denounce him on the spot. The shock was so nerve racking, he remained silent. “I understood where you were coming from thinking Endeavor pulled the strings behind the scenes but he hasn’t done a thing for (Y/n). Accept it. Until you do, I don’t want you in my class.”
“Understood,” Shinsou pressed a hand to his forehead.
“I know you don’t,” Aizawa stepped out.
In the meantime, most of the class went back to the dormitory to get in some extra sleep while the rest of your classmates made sure to check up on you. Shoto didn’t bother you at first however, as did Midoriya. They remember the day you began butting heads with Enji as if it happened yesterday, best to give you a moment to cool off even if your heart was made of ice. The evidence was clear that your emotions were in desperate need of a reality check; it was earlier when Aizawa excused the class that wherever you went your footsteps left an icy imprint.
When the time felt right, Shoto and Midoriya found you to be sitting upon a couch within the dormitory lounge all wrapped up in blankets like a sushi roll. A cute icy sushi roll. “The flames die down?” Shoto sat beside you.
“A bit too much,” you shivered. “I’m calm now but I’m freezing…”
“I’ll make you some coffee,” Midoriya offered nicely since he had neglected to take a seat just yet.
“Actually… Would it be too much to ask for a hot chocolate?” As much as you like coffee, hot chocolate’s always the best. It reminds you of your perfect childhood.
“If you don’t mind hot chocolate packets,” Midoriya would love to help you out however he can. While he can grind beans and add hot water, Midoriya doesn’t know how to make hot chocolate from scratch like you can.
“That’d be perfect thank you,” another cold shiver racked your body causing you to involuntarily jolt.
“Come here,” Shoto held up his left arm. Of course you understood what he meant, it’s become a regular since day one. Shoto’s body is like a comfortably warm heating pad and he’s more than welcome to help you out. You found yourself snuggling into Shoto’s side, savoring the warmth as he lied his arm to loosely hang around your shoulders. Even though the fire side of his body is always hot to the touch, he could tell that your body was chilled to the touch. You were just fine temperature wise for a few days now but now you’re back to square one all because of one argument.
“I’m gonna thank you right now for… For not getting involved with me and Shinsou earlier,” you spoke up after absorbing Shoto’s warmth for a moment. You were quite sure someone besides Mr. Aizawa would try to intervene earlier. He is a teacher after all, of course he’d try to step in and end it.
Shoto immediately felt thankful that Iida held him down earlier, “I tried to step in-”
“I know you tried,” you tut. “I’m just thankful that you didn’t get involved period, even if you almost did.”
“Can I ask why you got so offended by Shinsou? If it was me I would’ve ignored him.”
“I could’ve ignored him…” You clench your fists beneath the blanket as your rage began to spike. Shoto could feel your body temperature decrease by the second and goosebumps littered his arm. “Thing is… I understood where and why he thought everything he did but I can’t believe he was stuck on the idea that I would cheat my way into UA… I would never cheat, especially if it takes away from someone else. If you have to cheat… Then you’re no hero at all.”
“I didn’t expect that,” Shoto admits.
“Why?” You glanced up at him.
“I thought you were just pissed off at him in general is all,” It’s no secret that you tend to get offended at just about anything with ease. Probably would have been better to keep his mouth shut now that he’s thinking about it.
“I mean I am,” you agreed with Shoto. “I want nothing to do with Shinsou anymore.”
“Probably a good idea,” Midoriya came in with an armful of piping hot mugs of hot chocolate. That boy is always on the upper side of things. “I always try to steer clear of Kacchan,” Midoriya handed yourself and Shoto a mug of hot chocolate before sitting down with a cup for himself. “Just because we’re childhood friends doesn’t mean we necessarily should get along. I can’t count how many fights we’ve gotten into since we joined UA.”
“Fight you?” Your jaw almost hit the ground. “You’re the sweetest guy I’ve ever met!”
“Apparently not to Kacchan,” the green haired angel laughed awkwardly.
“Who is Kaachan anyways?” You wondered openly. “Sounds kind of like Katsuki-”
“That’s him,” Shoto and Midoriya spoke simultaneously.
“Oh…” You tapped the ceramic mug with your fingertips. “And here I thought he was decent.”
“He’s decent in his own special way just ask Kirishima,” Shoto wanted to end the subject quickly. He wasn’t exactly sure why, but he’s annoyed just by talking about Bakugou which was new. To take the edge off, Shoto blew a gust of frigid air atop his sea of chocolate before indulging in it’s sweetness.
“Somebody’s cranky,” you had clearly heard his aggravated tone.
Shoto lifted his head from the mug, “I haven’t had anything to eat yet today…” While that was true, he’s only coming up with a cover for himself.
Upon Shoto’s lip was that cute chocolate moustache, “Shoto.” You began to smile. You balled up a corner of the blanket within your hands and wiped his face clean.
Stunned, Shoto could only blink. “Um… Thanks.”
Just watching Shoto wipe his lip curiously with his hand, you began to wonder about him some more. “Y’know… I never did ask,” you brushed Shoto’s crimson locks from out of his face. He flinched in response. “How did you get this scar? Must be a pretty big story behind it.”
Shoto swallowed the lump in his throat, she still highly respects my dad. Should I really tell her? If I don’t, I know Midoriya will. Truth it is… “My mom…” He sighed.
“Your mom!?” You nearly choked. “I thought you loved her more than anything!”
“I do…” He nods.
“Why did she do that to you? Why do you still love her after that?” And you thought the way your own mom spoke to you as of recently was toxic. You can’t imagine your own mother harming you like his own mom did him.
“Although she did hurt me…” Shoto wants to forget the past. “It wasn’t her fault.”
“How was it not her fault? Was she manipulated to hurt you?”
“A lot of mental abuse okay?” Shoto tried to spare the details as best he could. “There’s reasons why my family isn’t close.”
“Enji…” It just dawned on you. “I’ve always wondered why you hate your dad so much… Now I know why,” Shoto’s nasty and rebellious nature towards his own father must’ve came from somewhere. One singular man broke apart an entire family.
“I didn’t want to tell you.”
“I understand…” A cold mist began to leak from your body.
“(Y/n)...” Shoto jolted away from you.
“You guys thought I was mad at Shinsou,” you began to take long and slow breaths that came out just as slow. The cold mist that began to fill the air slowly began to diminish. “I’m mad… But I’m calm too... Thank… Fuck… I never grew to marry that fiery piece of shit.”
“We all know you’re going to do something to him later, aren't you?” Midoriya began to slowly step away.
“Where’s Bakugou? I’m gonna take a few notes off him.”
