Chapter 29: The Beginning of the End
I lied!!! There's one more chapter after this! This WAS originally the final chapter but it's WAY too long for everything to fit in one chapter so here's the first part to the final chapter. The second half will be uploaded when finished ON TOP OF an epilogue of what happens after the events of the book.
No leads were found, only one League of Villain's member was picked out from the crowd and death threats were plastered for everyone to see. (Y/n) had broken and had run out of hope for that matter too and yet this family vacation has yet to begin. (Y/n) believed saving her family from what she considered to be a massacre was inevitable. She didn't understand why everyone wasn't taking the situation seriously, acting as if this rescue mission disguised as a vacation were truly real. From Hawks planning on soaring across the big blue at breakneck speeds to Midoriya planning dates for himself and Shun. Everyone is about to die. How can anyone relax at a time like this?
After much persuasion, Shoto managed to bring (Y/n) to her senses. He understood that the stakes were high, anything upon everything could go south at any given moment, but that's okay. They're ready for what the League has planned be it during the early morning hours or the middle of the night. Everything is accounted for, they just won't give the League the time of day. That's why everyone has their guard lowered. To lure the League into a false sense of security and then when they strike, the League of Villains won't be prepared for what's coming! Shun's false death has already shaken up their leading member, and that won't be the end of it.
A day had passed, and then two. The League of Villains had yet to make a move. While everyone knew they'd eventually strike, everyone had lowered their guard just enough to finally enjoy this vacation for what it was. Despite how badly (Y/n)'s siblings wanted to go swimming in the ocean, nearly everyone made a hard pass but now a few had taken up the offer. The first being Midoriya that is. He had such a hard time telling the fox twins no in the first place, before the guilt began to eat him up, now he's diving head first into the frigid ocean. Next was Hawks, he had been flying across the ocean from dusk till dawn since day one but now he's donned a pair of swim trucks and joined the kids.
Shun can't swim, hence his mechanical limbs, so he's been reading and chatting casually with Bakugou. That's another thing: Bakugou. He's been getting along with Shun since this trip had begun. He's actually explained its because 'Shitty Hair was forced behind and I'm not going to sit here all day' so it began with trying to square up before the boys settled on talking about how annoying the Fox twins are. Turns out, Shun cannot stand his younger siblings. He cursed the day his father adopted the Fox Twins because all they ever do is destroy things, make a mess of everything and bite the living hell out of him.
(Y/n) on the other hand, didn't think to bring along a swimsuit... It's due to her quirk that she'd rather miss out on the fun instead of freezing to death in any body of water. However, her mother insisted that she'd at least dress for the occasion and had sewn her a swimsuit almost instantly. Curse her mother for being a national fashion designer with a sewing machine quirk...
More than twenty minutes had passed since (Y/n) had reluctantly taken her mother's swim suit and went into the nearest bathroom. Shoto had been holding out on the water hoping that (Y/n) would join him but considering how long she's been locked in the bathroom, that possibility is beginning to look faint. "Was she always this self conscious when you two were dating?" Shoto had turned to his father, who sat under a nearby umbrella with a newspaper lying out across a table.
Enji raised his head with a half lidded glare, "must you ask such questions?"
"Sorry, it was just a question," Shoto turned away from the man.
"It's inappropriate to ask given my age," Enji retaliates.
Shoto turned around sharing a much more heated glare, "it's not like I asked if you two had sex or anything. I only wanted to know how she was back when you knew her."
"I'm curious to know myself but please," Mrs. Renora wore such an awkward smile. "Please don't answer that first question."
"I had no intention..." Enji grumbled and begun to rake through his memories from thirty years prior until he could recollect what he could about (Y/n). There wasn't much there, but enough to please his crowd. "From what I can tell, it's night and day with (Y/n) compared from then till now."
"How so?" Shoto hummed.
"She wasn't anywhere near as emotional as she is now. Back then it was like she had two settings: Demonic or Angelic. It was never anything in between. She had her priorities straight, that's for sure. Straight A's and to become the number one hero... Whatever happened to that dream of hers anyways? I noticed after she came out of the ice, she wouldn't stop talking about how she cannot compete with the new generation of heroes," Shoto went wide eyed to Enji's claim that held no lies. Here he thought Enji wasn't paying attention at all when in reality he may just know more than the person closest to (Y/n).
Shoto found himself looking at the floorboards, "I don't know what to say..." The teenager trailed off. "You're right, she's told me a million times over that she can't compete with us. She was upset... Really upset when she realized that at first. She has no intent to become the number one anymore, but I have no idea otherwise. (Y/n) has been 'stuck' ever since... If that makes any sense," all this talk about her quirk's drawbacks, having no choice but to rely on Shoto more than she prefers, in fact, the longer Shoto's been with (Y/n) the less and less she talks about heroes in general. Yeah, there's everything to do with Touya and the family that's been going on but it all just seems too much for her. To be fair, it's a bit much for everyone. That much Shoto can agree with.
"Can you really blame her," Mrs. Renora wore a frown. "Dante always talked about how (Y/n) worked dawn till dusk working on that dream of hers. It's the unfortunate reality that she can't achieve her dream that's keeping her from moving forward. It may not be anytime soon, but she'll find a new direction eventually... Right?" This is one of those times where having famous parents pay off! They understand the struggle when it comes to achieving your dreams. Sometimes, there's dreams you'll strive for that can't come within grasp no matter how much you work at it. It is a harsh reality, coming to terms that your dream is out of reach, but there'll always be something perfect for anyone. In (Y/n)'s case, she might not be able to be the best hero of them all, but second place isn't so bad.
"Can you guys quit talking about me..." (Y/n) meekly slipped out from behind the bathroom door. A white towel had been tightly embraced to her torso concealing everything there was to see spare for the blinding white straps that hung about her shoulders. The girl's eyes were transfixed to the floor as a faint dust of pink aroused the flesh of her cheeks.
"Now (Y/n)," Mrs. Renora crossed her arms. "I went through the trouble of making that swimsuit for you. Now show us."
"It literally took you five minutes to make!" (Y/n) whined.
"Yeah! And it took thirty plus years of experience in order for me to do that now take off the towel!"
"Mom!"
"I'm not asking for you to go without it all day!" Mrs. Renora sighed as she realized she took everything a bit too far. "I went through the trouble to make you a suit... I just wanna see you in it. Afterwards, you can put on twenty layers of clothes if that's what you want to do." Maybe her daughter is insecure about her body? Maybe it's because her boyfriend AND ex boyfriend are here that she's afraid to show off? It could be many things and she'll have to respect that.
(Y/n) let out an overbearing sigh and lifted her arm to grab at the corner of her towel. The towel unraveled from the girl's body until final, the group could see some flesh. She's insecure about this? Shoto thought upon first glance. It's a white one piece. Some spaghetti straps captured her shoulders tightly with a large frilly lace that covered her chest and arms that swayed delicately with the sea's breeze. It's really flattering yet concealing, Shoto couldn't help but to smile. "You look beautiful," he shared without a thought. Everyone nodded in agreement.
(Y/n) shivered violently, "Thanks but... I'm cold..."
"Your quirk..." Mrs. Renora went bug eyed. "That's why you don't swim..."
"Thanks to dad I'm incapable of making my own body heat," (Y/n) hurriedly threw the towel around herself and blew into her hands. "I'm gonna go change now if that's fine."
"No!" Shoto jumped forwards. "We're swimming."
(Y/n) couldn't believe what Shoto just said. "Shoto-"
"I found a hot tub earlier while I was waiting for you," Shoto was quick to point out as (Y/n) was halfway into the bathroom as they spoke clearly terrified out of her mind. The comment settled in though, and (Y/n) had to admit, although she's never been in a hot tub, it sure did sound luxurious. Anything to do with heat almost always was a blessing.
"She's gonna pass out," Shun sat down his book with a bored expression written about his features. "And before any of you say anything, I'm speaking from experience with my quirk. Her's is much more extreme than mine so you know it won't end well."
Shoto forced himself to look in the opposite direction, "I was trying to do something nice..."
"A few minutes won't hurt," (Y/n) finally was on board with the idea. "C'mon!" She tugged on Shoto's arm.
"O... Kay?" Shoto followed (Y/n)'s lead. Only to have to take over as she had no idea where the hot tub was located. Luckily it was close by! A few corners later only to be face to face with a glass wall that separated the two rooms. Just from the hallway, the couple saw a bounty of thick white steam waft from atop the small tub's water and dissipate into the air. An indoor fog as some would call it.
Shoto grabbed the long steel bar handle to the glass door and held it open, (Y/n) stood there for a second before stepping within the room. "Such a gentleman," she giggled upon entering. That towel of hers was shed within seconds as the room was toasty warm and a sheen of water began to form upon their forearms and faces. "It's warm like... Like my heated cape at school!" She had begun to hug herself as just mentioning that the support-gear cape made specifically to complement her hero suit brought back sweet memories of warm fluffy bliss.
This is the happiest I've seen her in a while. Shoto smiled wholeheartedly as that smile of hers, the genuine one at least, felt as though it were lost in time. "I take it that this is your first time in a hot tub?"
(Y/n) snapped her head around to the question, "I grew up in poverty... We didn't have the money to go to spas and springs and stuff."
"Poverty?" He hummed curiously for he held her hand as he stepped down into the bubbly hot water of the tub. It was until he was about waist deep that he tugged the girl forward and well, she jumped in.
Just upon contact with the water, it was as if she had melted into the cemented seating beneath the water and allowed the heat to do wonders upon her body. "I'm assuming that I never told you about life with my birth mother?" (Y/n) had picked up their previous conversation.
Shoto nodded slightly and sat across from (Y/n) within the tub. "Well you mentioned ways your mom would save money a few times but I didn't think you were poor," Everyone is cheap in their own ways and especially with certain things! Some people refuse to get main brand groceries because generic is cheaper and oftentimes the same quality. Others don't spend money to get luxuries like television and internet. In (Y/n)'s case, Shoto's heard her mention how her mom would often purchase certain foods in bulk during sales and that's all they ate until the next sale would pop up. Hence, (Y/n)'s great distaste in pasta in general. Furthermore, her mother very rarely purchased anything that wasn't discounted. Actually... Shoto feels stupid thinking back on everything now. For a little while he just thought her mother was being a cheapskate, apparently it was money issues all along. A reality Shoto has a hard time understanding since his family was considered to be 'higher end'.
"Yeah... We didn't have much," (Y/n) lifted a hand out of the water and was amazed by the amount of steam coming from the limb.. "Mom worked to pay the bills and so did dad but he was absent for the most part. Always gone on business trips so it wasn't until he came back that we saw any money. That's part of the reason why I strived to become a hero actually!"
"For money?" Shoto cocked a brow.
(Y/n) shrugged. "Sorta? It was a few things wrapped up into one. I originally wanted to help those in poverty. You know, like the homeless and single parents like my blood mother. Because it's not easy. I had to live wondering when and where my next meal would come from. Then I met Enji who showed me the harsh reality we live in... Normally, we only see the heroes who defeat villains and save civilians on tv but never really those who do the other stuff like solving crime, putting out fires let alone community service. The line of work I wanted to go in, at the time, was frowned upon and got so much backlash from the community. Unless you were defeating villains or stopping a bank robbery, you weren't considered a hero... I wanted to become Number One so that I could change how the heroes are seen."
"The heroes who fight villains still get most of the praise even today," Shoto sighed in realization.
"School too," (Y/n) puffed out her cheeks lightly. "School is segregated in a way... The hero courses get all the praise, all the money, all the support meanwhile everyone else is treated like they don't matter. Shinsou told me all about how harsh it was being viewed as someone who would eventually take the villain route and that's how he got stuck in the General Department. Not to forget, I've heard all the gossip around school too... You have to be the strongest of the strong to even make it into the hero courses, they don't view us as equals at all. The students feel inferior to us. It's horrible how corrupted and power hungry hero society has become..." Shoto stood there, unable to comment upon such a deep true argument (Y/n) had thrown out into the wind. His hero class, from what he's noticed, is almost entirely combat driven. It wasn't until internships that anyone realized there's more to being a hero than brawn. The ranking system in hero society as well, encourages the corrupt power hungry beliefs that the society has come to live by. It hurts Shoto even more now than before thinking about how heartless Enji used to be about hero work. How horribly that man wanted to take All Might out of the rankings, how he chose his spouse to make physically superior children perfect for combat.
"I'm sorry," (Y/n) spoke, ripping Shoto from his thoughts. "I really just layed it all out on you didn't I?"
"You're not wrong though," Shoto brought his hand up to his face. His fingers ghosting the scar that lived upon his face as a grim reminder of Enji's horrible ways.
"Can't help but sympathize with the villains a little bit huh?"
"I used to tread the dark path," Shoto admits much to his dismay. "There was a point in time when I let power and anger get to my head... Of course I understand the villains."
"We're still taking them down though," (Y/n) growled lightly. "I can't... I just can't sympathize with the League of Villains. Murdering an entire family for wealth... Sick..." (Y/n)'s head bobbed suddenly.
"Um... (Y/n)?" Shoto lurched forward suddenly before she could go beneath the water. Luckily, he caught her, pulling her to her feet as she felt like a warm limp mess within his arms.
"I-I-I'm sorry," (Y/n) stuttered horribly, pressing a palm to her forehead. "I got a little light headed..."
"Your brother did suggest the hot tub wasn't the brightest idea."
Afterwards, (Y/n) and Shoto came to a compromise by instead just letting their legs get a dip in the hot tub while they talked things over. Shoto was adamant about how much he wanted to change the subject from how corrupt society was and the League of Villains to whatever. As long as the subject was changed. The thought of knowing the League could attack at any moment was already stressful enough, on top of how they technically murdered his brother, so Shoto wanted to skip the subject as a whole. (Y/n) couldn't blame him. Not at all.
Come nighttime, Mr. and Mrs. Renora had requested the crew to pull out a fire pit whereas the twins had bugged them to hell and back that they wanted a bonfire. Everyone knew they only wanted a bonfire to get sweets and S'mores but nobody was against the idea. To sit around a fire and get to know one another was something that felt necessary. Everyone wanted it, but it was never verbally requested. Shun felt almost alienated by the family, he didn't want to be here because he didn't belong anymore given the events of recent months. Mr. and Mrs. Renora haven't seen all of their children in one place ever since (Y/n) came out of the ice. It was nice having the family together. They also wanted to finally get to know everyone (Y/n) brought along on a deep personal level. After All, they're on a family vacation! Better to give everyone the official welcome.
The twins were Bakugou's shadow. Wherever he went, they followed. Even now, the kids were munching on their S'mores all comfortable sitting side by side within his lap. Bakugou fought them off many many times, be it tossing them off to the side or, as politely as he could muster, was to push him off his lap. Bakugou eventually gave in, not because he literally gave up on the fight, but rather the twins were much more calm and easier to handle when he wasn't rejecting them every few seconds. He'd rather have two four year olds calmly eating s'mores on his lap rather than them biting him in odd places. Everyone could very well tell that he was overcame from annoyance and it was hilarious.
Enji kept showing off, which wasn't unexpected, but Shoto deeply wished he'd knock it off. Whenever the bonfire shrunk below a certain height, he'd douse the pit in those hellish flames of his. There's reasons why everyone sat easily ten feet or more from the fire.
Nyah had somewhat joined in on the festivities. She had a few marshmallows pierced upon the end of a roasting stick and held the white pillowy goodness above the flames. She absolutely refused to let them touch the flames however with the claim that 'I don't understand how you all can sit there and let your marshmallows burn! All you're eating is ash! Let them slowly cook until they're golden brown... Unless you can't wait that long you gluttons?' Yeah, not the most appropriate thing to say BUT nobody could argue that she had a sound argument.
April was trying to enjoy the festivities but her baby was having a fussy fit.
Shun was content with a plate of marshmallows and ate them raw. One after the other, he plopped them into his mouth. Sadly, this is the 'best' Shoto and (Y/n) has seen him all vacation. He just always seems dejected no matter the moment.
Midoriya and Hawks on the other hand were experimenting with all the possible s'more combinations they could create since the parents had requested for a s'more buffet of sorts. From regular chocolate bars, peanut butter patties to even mint chocolate on top of over a dozen other choices. Even the graham crackers were a variety from honey to chocolate to cinnamon.
One last thing, Shun and Midoriya are keeping their relationship on the down low. So low, they're pretending they're not even a couple. Midoriya isn't happy, in fact he says he's 'tortured' because he has to keep something so important a secret. Shun claims that he doesn't want his family knowing about them just yet, maybe even at all. It's something to do with the family not accepting him for who he is because Shun's came out before today, but it wasn't well received. Now, he doesn't want his family to have any idea about his love life and prefers it that way. Long story short, there's more tension than there ever was on top of this whole secret mission.
"So..." Mr. Renora thought he'd finally break the ice and get everyone talking. "How's all of your hero studies going? Anything big happen? My kids stopped giving us updates out of the blue a few months back," that event that Mr. Renora was referencing to was Shun's attempted assassination. (Y/n) was always calling and emailing her father about all the big things that happened in school as well as all the things that were different in school now compared thirty years prior. After her brother's check in with the hospital, (Y/n) found it best to not communicate with the family at all despite how badly she wanted to.
Shun turned and stared at Midoriya almost as if silently pleading for him to give a suitable response. Midoriya nearly choked on his s'more, going all red in the face, and had done the same towards Shoto and (Y/n). Nobody knew how to respond...
"I'm sorry," Mr. Renora apologized with a hand pressed to his chest. "It's probably something you can't talk about."
"I've taken (Y/n) as well as Shoto on as apprentices," Enji spoke up with that thundering voice of his. "We've teamed up with a few other Pro Heroes here in Japan to further investigate the League of Villains. They're horrible at covering up their tracks..." Everyone went wide eyed as Enji wasn't holding back on anything. "Little did they know, they had a traitor and they made the mistake of hacking into one of Japan's most secure networks. We've traced back the address of the computer they used-"
"I'm feeling tired," Nyah stood up from the bench all too suddenly, her face noticeably flustered, all the while she brushed off the wrinkles from her skirt. "Goodnight everyone."
"Awe hun... Goodnight," Mrs. Renora waved her eldest goodbye.
(Y/n) leaned into Shoto's side and in a harsh whisper, "Should one of us follow?"
Shoto sprung from his seat, his face as deadpan as ever. "I'll be back," he announced and followed after Nyah. Everyone found his sudden disappearance to be odd to say the least.
All in all, the conversations continue. Enji was boasting about his achievements over the years and while the parents were amazed, Bakugou had signalled something towards Midoriya which prompted them both to leave the area. (Y/n) couldn't help but give Shun a pleading look, the one that screams 'what do we do?!'
Bakugou had led Midoriya to a railing of the ship, frantically looked in all directions, then glared at the one with emerald hair. "Icy-Hot's been gone for too long."
"A-Agreed!" Midoriya awkwardly scratched the back of his neck. "What do you think happened to him?"
"Either dead, dying or locked up somewhere."
Bakugou didn't hold back on that one... "Do you really think they'd attack tonight?" Midoriya couldn't believe what was playing out behind the scenes.
"Endeavor..." Bakugou seethed. "Didn't you hear what he said before that one girl left? He was calling her out. She probably got scared shitless and plans to pick us off one by one. Icy-Hot was stupid enough to take the bait."
"Are you saying we should get back to the group and leave Shoto for dead!?"
"Not like we have any other option..." Bakugou had thought very briefly, but there's no other logical way to go about this. They're in the endgame now, and all possibilities must be accounted for.
"Sad part is... You're right," Midoriya's mouth scrunched up. "Let's head back then-"
Ping Ping Ping
Almost reminiscent of dropping a pencil and hearing the light tumble and roll of the wooden cylinder, a light blue bead had rolled towards the boys in such an agonizingly slow fashion. Midoriya nearly questioned the existence of the bead, let alone where it came from, only for realization to settle in within the second and the boy's eyes had shrunken out of fear.
Snap!
The bead had exploded! The area filling with smoke. Midoriya held out one of his arms, the other grabbed his held out wrist. His middle finger was held back by his thumb, all other fingers held high. "Stand back Kacchan!" Midoriya cried and he flicked his finger, a great big wave of wind cut through the thick smoke revealing a well dressed man with burgundy hair and a wicked smile. Between all of his gloved fingers were blue spherical beads much like the one from before.
"You weren't supposed to do that," the man playfully commented, for he began to juggle the beads in erratic speeds from snail-slow to blinding fast! More and more beads had been added to his collection by the second. "I guess the jig is up..." The man's juggling had ceased yet eight beads remained between his fingers. "Just in case either of you have forgotten who I am and what I can display for hungry eyes... Allow me to explain!" He had tossed all of the beads into the air, but as if they've disappeared from existence, all had disappeared, spare for one of which was held between what was a robotic arm's index finger and thumb. "This bead right here contains your precious Shoto," within a quick blinding movement, an entire handful of beads were present. "Can you guess which one is him?"
"Not this shit again..." Bakugou growled as his fingertips sparkled brightly with yellows and orange.
"I won't allow you to take Todoroki!!!" Midoriya sprung from his spot in a flurry of green electricity!
Everyone's heads snapped upon hearing Midoriya's battle cry! "What's going on?" Mr. Renora stood up. The heroes had taken a stand and all simultaneously nodded together.
Hawks zipped across the deck with his grand crimson wings, herding together the family. "I need to know if you have a safe room on board!"
"The safest room is the engine!" Mr. Renora nearly stuttered. "Wh-what's going on!?"
"Anyone whose last name is Renora is in danger," Hawks' eyes squinted as he turned to Endeavor. "I'll escort the family to safety and stay with them to ensure they're not endangered. I'll leave everything else to you three!"
"Go!" Endeavor snapped, his face engulfed in his iconic flames. Hawks had removed a great big feather from his wingspan and ushered the family below deck. Shun growled and ran in a random direction, "And where do you think you're going!?" Endeavor shouted at the bionic boy.
Shun spun around, sweating like crazy. "I didn't expect the attack to happen tonight... I need to go grab a support gear in my room!"
"Support gear?" (Y/n) hummed. Since when did Shun use support gear?
"Get a move on then!" Endeavor growled and Shun left as fast as his bionic leg could carry him. "We literally only came here for one reason and he's unprepared!?"
"Chill out Enji," (Y/n) growled. "How about ya quit worrying about one person being unprepared and focus on the big picture!?"
Enji's flames roared to new heights. "Now isn't the time to snap at me young lady!"
Mist began to emanate from (Y/n)'s flesh. "Stubborn just like back then!!!"
"C'mon you two!" Snapped a foreign voice. The two heroes snapped their heads in the direction of the voice only to find an annoyed Shoto standing at the opposite end of the deck. A nasty cut had spread from his left wrist to elbow, he tried to make a make-shift band-aid from ripping off the sleeve to his button up, only to poorly tie it to the wound. Somehow, he didn't seem phased by the injury, just annoyed to find that his loved ones were butting heads when other things were more important.
"Sh-Shoto?" (Y/n) ran up to the boy with worry evident in her watery eyes. He hissed as she poked and prodded his injured arm only to snatch it away from her grasp. "I-I'm sorry," (Y/n) backed away suddenly. "It probably hurts like crazy. I should've asked first-"
"Shoto," Endeavor bellowed as he took a knee and he too took his son's arm into his grasp and looked it over carefully. (Y/n) found the sight to be heartwarming as she's yet to see the two of them share a father-son moment since the excavation from the ice. Enji's actually worried about his son's injury despite Shoto acting as if nothing was wrong. "How did this happen?" Enji finally spoke up. He unwrapped the wound and attempted to fix it to the best of his ability. Or, at least make sure the wound was better taken care for compared to before.
"I'm not entirely sure..." Shoto sighed. "I got ambushed... Then I just sort of woke up locked in a closet."
"Then-" (Y/n)'s blood ran cold. "What are Midoriya and Bakugou doing?"
Ka-BOOOM!!!!
For now this book will remain unfinished. I went through a depression, life got in the way, I don't have time like I used to. I'd rather use my time to do bigger better things and that my spark for writing is no longer there. There's also the issue that I HAVE written most of the final chapter, it's just that nothing, no matter how many times I rewrite and delete, is acceptable in my eyes to upload. I CANT upload it and if I do, I wouldn't be able to forgive myself.
Therefore, for now, this book is unfinished. If one day I finish it, be it a month or even years down the line, I hope you enjoy. But for now, I apologize and thank everyone for sticking with this book until this point.
