Chapter 17: The Odds

Everything moved quickly.

Shoto was the true hero today as without him someone would've begun their ascent to heaven. The young hero refused to give up on the violet haired individual as he performed CPR for the better part of twenty minutes before the paramedics arrived. When they came onto the scene, it came as a shock to nearly everyone as the victim was alive and far from visiting the grave. The paramedics congratulated Shoto Todoroki for his sharp thinking. Even then, the praise didn't last very long as they loaded (Y/n)'s brother onto the ambulance within an inch of his life and left as soon as they arrived.

The young couple now had more problems on their hands. While Shoto didn't mind, (Y/n) was shaken by the thought that their clothes were stained in crimson. In the end, stained clothes were the least of their worries as they ran and ran as fast as their feet could propel them. Neither of them felt as ease until they were set up in a waiting room at the hospital. The room itself was stained in horrible lasting emotions. Sadness, despair, regret, guilt it was all over the place from the walls to the tear soaked fabric of the chairs. Come hours later, (Y/n) still hadn't gotten any news about her brother's condition but instead met with the grim discovery that the nurse had handed over all of Shun's belongings as if he'd never return. Now, (Y/n) was at her absolute low. She had no idea it's been nearly four hours since the attack yet in her scarred mind it feels as though only minutes had gone by.

Shoto was worried about (Y/n) more than he was Shun at this point. Shoto has never seen (Y/n) zone in and out from reality as badly as she was now. She's been frozen for three decades, learned that everyone she knew was either dead or old, reunited with her father and nearly died since then and yet nearly losing her half brother finally broke her mold. He's more than aware that (Y/n) didn't like her brother all that much but she still cared for him as if she's known him her whole life. That's one thing Shoto's grown to love about his girl; she could barely know you and happily hand over her life if it meant a better life in the eyes of another. Shoto could tell that she was finally coming back into reality after a long pause with reality with how she was taking in a long intake of breath that made her chest expand past it's limits. One long exhale, and (Y/n) closed her eyes. "Is Bakugou here yet?" The girl finally spoke up for the first time since the accident.

"No..." Shoto stopped looking at the girl and faced forwards. Of all things that crosses her mind at this time, she thinks about Bakugou. There's other more pressing matters, Shoto thought with disgust. "What's up with you (Y/n)?" Shoto lets out an overbearing sigh. "I know you're not okay."

"Well," (Y/n) huffed in aggravation. "No shit! I'm not doing okay. My brother is probably gonna die," snarkiness on point...

"Not what I meant," Shoto shared a worrisome glare with (Y/n). "I know you're upset with Shun in his condition. I wanted to know what's going on in your head. Are you mad?" Shoto continued to talk as more and more excuses came to his head. "What're you gonna do about all this? Do you..." He trailed off as he didn't want to finish his thought. "Do you need to cry? You haven't cried at all and knowing you... I expected you to cry or something by now."

"I'm just waiting for news from the doctor," (Y/n) kept a level head and nearly ignored just about everything her boyfriend had to ask. "If he's expected to live or die or... Has a fighting chance... I don't want to jump to conclusions and think the world is ending just yet..." The girl slowly reached over and held Shoto's hand and intertwined their fingers together. Just knowing Shoto was there for her gave her all the reassurance she needed to pull through this moment. "If you hadn't taken charge like you did... My brother would be dead... Thank you..."

A tear had finally fled from the girl's eyes. Shoto used his free hand to dry her tears, "for how badly you talk about him... You sure seem to love him." Something Shoto couldn't understand even if his life depended on it. He wouldn't risk his life for his brother or sister and he's downright sure they'd be the same.

"For how badly you two don't get along," (Y/n) snickered. "You cared enough to save him." All those times they came within an inch of throwing each other down, the horrid name calling and the fact that both Shoto and Shinsou mutually can't stand Shun was shocking enough as it was.

"I wasn't gonna let him die," Shoto admits. A true hero wouldn't sit around and let another being die be it a human or an animal.

"I care about him so much because..." She sighed. "Nobody cared about me all that much before my little time skip. Now, I have siblings and he latched onto me. He may not be the best brother, but I know he loves me and I'll do the same for him." What brother goes out of his way to bond with his sister? What brother begs his sister to go on a double date with him? What brother does everything in his power to keep his sister happy? Shun, that's who.

"Hey..." Shoto hummed, catching his girlfriend's attention. "I think you should come and work with me and my dad at his agency," (Y/n) was stunned by the offer as it was meaningful and came out of nowhere. "We heard Ashido... We're gonna need to hunt down the girl that tried to kill Shun. I say we do it together." The determination in his voice. Shot genuinely wants (Y/n) to come and work at his agency.

"Let's do it then," (Y/n) agreed immediately. She'd be an idiot to decline him otherwise. "Is it wrong that... That I'm starting to think Ashido attacked him?" It is odd that a girl of all people tried to kill Shun and it was during a date too. Ashido begged and begged as if her life depended on it to earn said date from him and magically when the double date disbands, he gets attacked. Either Ashido tried to kill him or everything happened in an extremely coincidental manner.

"It wasn't her," Shoto shook his head. "Almost everyone at the scene said nearly the same thing about the attacker."

"Still makes no sense..." A girl attacked Shun. According to eyewitnesses, she was an older woman, assumed to be in her late thirties, who apparently just walked up to him and stabbed him in three places and yet the woman had no weapons on hand. Just how exactly could you stab someone without a weapon? Ashido could've used her quirk to attack him! "Wait..." (Y/n) got her gears rolling. "Didn't Ashido say that the girl said something to Shun before she ran off?"

"Um... I think," Shoto scratched his chin. All of the details weren't sitting well in his memory. "Ashido said she heard something like 'come back and I'll save you' then Shun told Ashido to call for help."

"Come back where?" She sighed. "Stupid... Clearly they know each other." Shun never backs down from fights, he's practically fearless! Yet he was utterly terrified to go with the girl in question. Either she's bad news or they had a past and not a good one either.

"Miss Renora?" A nurse popped into the waiting room with a dreaded expression on her face upon entering. Yes, she was wearing dread. (Y/n) and Shoto were caked in Shun's blood and well... They called Bakugou earlier to bring them a change of clothes. They called other people first, but Bakugou was the only one to answer.

"That's me," (Y/n) got up from the worn out chair.

"I regret to inform you that your brother... He's not expected to live past morning," the nurse spoke slowly and held onto (Y/n)'s shoulder for reassurance. "While he has a really great track record for being a trooper in these circumstances, his injuries are just too great. He's gonna need a lung and stomach transplant. It's extremely hard getting our hands on donors for those organs and on top of that the donor needs to be his same blood type," there (Y/n) went... She was losing contact with reality once again as everything the nurse said turned into white noise within (Y/n)'s ears. Shoto saw how the girl began to sway and caught her on the spot before she could fall. "I guess I should get to the point," the nurse realized just how much damage was done to (Y/n) through words alone. "The surgeons are in the process of removing his injured lung and temporarily patching up his stomach. Again, these fixes are only temporary unless you can find male type O donors within the next few days."

"Thank you," Shoto was in the process of picking (Y/n) up and setting her back upon her feet.

"I still have important information for you both," the nurse bit her lip. "The patient woke up mid surgery and now we'll have to put him under a medically induced coma to prevent him from waking up again and to promote healing. While awake, he had a few requests..."

"And those are?" (Y/n) came back into reality... If only a little bit.

"He asks that his family isn't notified of his accident," the nurse sighed. "He specifically said that you're the only person from his family that he's okay with knowing about this."

"So his family is supposed to go day by day wondering where in the hell their son went?" (Y/n) couldn't believe what she was hearing. What's she supposed to say to her family? Is she supposed to act as if her brother never existed? What about the news? This incident will be plastered all over the news come morning...

"The patient mentioned something about his attacker potentially going after his family if they're to know of this," Shoto and (Y/n) both stopped breathing. "I've already notified the authorities of his claim. His family won't be notified about anything and we ask that you follow the same protocol."

"I won't even talk to them," (Y/n) was quick to answer. "I'll look for donors. Thank you! Bye!" (Y/n) rushed out of the hospital and Shoto was hot on her tail. She was long outside by the time he caught up with her and (Y/n) was screaming out loud for the world to hear. Shoto nearly tackled her with a hand pressed firmly to her mouth to muffle her distressed cries. "People are gonna think you're being killed," the boy hissed while she continued to fight against his actions. "(Y/n) get a hold of yourself!"

The girl bit his hand! Shoto shot away from her while his palm bled. "Try being in my shoes right now," she hissed as the coppery taste of blood flooded her mouth. "My brother has no chance to survive Shoto! I get way too connected to people and now he's leaving. Not like you could understand anyways..." (Y/n) came near and leaned her entire body into Shoto's chest. "You don't even talk with your family."

Shoto held back a growl as he loosely embraced her back and rubbed (Y/n)'s backside. "I understood that you loved him. You're upset... Mad... Just let it out."

"You told me to knock it off," she shoved the boy away. "Some people hurt themselves when they're angry, some yell and some have to destroy shit... Well I do all of the above!" (Y/n)'s sadly broken a few of her own bones in the past over her anger tantrums. She'd punch and kick things until the pain is too overwhelming. The yelling can get out of hand too. She's once lost her voice for a week straight.

"Don't... Hurt yourself..." Shoto hesitantly reached out for the (Y/n)'s shaking fists and held them firmly. "If anything... Throw a few punches at me if it'll help you feel better."

"N-No," (Y/n) shook her head vigorously. "Once I get going I won't stop."

"If it makes you feel better," Shoto redirected his girlfriend's hand to lie atop his chest. "Do whatever you want to me." Shoto's being dead ass serious. He's allowing himself to be his girlfriend's punching bag and he could see the conflict in her eyes. "It's better than you breaking your hands over something that's out of your control."

"I hate you sometimes..." (Y/n) grasped tightly on Shoto's shirt. "You're such a gentleman it hurts!" She threw a punch directly into his stomach. Shoto doubled over as she really packed a punch. Next thing he knew, she threw yet another punch then a kick which threw him to the ground. (Y/n) was so blinded by the rage she never knew she had and her newly found despair crippling sadness to top it off. She battered Shoto and not once did he fight back let alone try to defend himself. Shoto would kill himself if he ever hurt his snow angel.

The couple really caused a commotion. As late as ever, Bakugou had finally arrived on the scene with their requested change of clothes. At first he paid no mind to the fighting that took place not all that far off from the hospital until he recognized that head of white and red from anywhere. (Y/n), beating up the person she loves most? Shoto looked as if he was barely hanging onto his last shreds of consciousness and that's when Bakugou sprung from his spot pried the boy from her hands. "Bitch Now's not the time!" Bakugou hissed as he pulled (Y/n)'s arms into a restricting position behind her back. Shoto lied on the ground, groaning. "Bitch what's gotten into you!?"

"Noth-" (Y/n) nearly snapped, until her rage subsided upon the sight of Shoto's battered form. "Thing..." She finally finished her thought. "I did that?" Tears welled in her eyes.

"Just answer my damn question..." The blonde glared at the girl.

"I was angry that someone tried to kill Shun..." (Y/n) began to hiccup. "Now I have to lie to my family about everything that's happened. Shoto agreed to be my punching bag because he knew I needed to let off steam but I didn't think I'd beat him this badly!!!"

"Dammit," Bakugou hissed. He understood this situation more than anyone. It was no secret that his anger ALWAYS got the better of him. His first instinct is to destroy something, anything, through the use of his quirk. Kirishima has stepped up to the bat when it came to being Bakugou's personal stress ball. "Are you done raging?" He questioned.

"I'm fucking crying my balls off!" (Y/n) tear flooded orbs peered up at him.

"Then make sure you didn't kill him," Bakugou released the girl on the spot and she dove for Shoto. Shoto instinctively almost punched her as her pounce was unexpected. She would've gladly taken the punch either way. (Y/n) embraced her lover's head into her shoulder and neck and cried into his head of hair. "I'm so sorry Shoto!" She sniffled. "Thirty years ago nobody would've stayed with me as long as you have! Nobody!!! I'm sure you want nothing to do with me now-"

"Shut up..." Shoto loosely embraced (Y/n). Every movement he made hurt. "I told you I was fine taking a few punches..."

(Y/n) managed to smile through her pain. "I gave you the entire fight club."

"Do you feel better?" Shoto breathed as his nearly swollen left eye struggled to meet hers.

"I'm not even mad anymore."

"Then I did my job," Shoto struggled to sit up as he was proud of his work.

The next morning, well... (Y/n), Shoto and Mina had no choice but to go to class despite how mind scarring yesterday was. The three of them were keeping Shun's attack on the downlow in respect to his wishes but also (Y/n) was already emotional as it was and she didn't want to be bombarded with pity and questions galore. If anyone had the right to know what happened, it was Shinsou and Midoriya. Shun was Shinsou's cousin and Midoriya was his friend too after all. Shinsou wasn't exactly phased though as he knew Shun's attitude and personality towards almost everyone would eventually land him in the emergency room. Despite the heartless reaction, Shinsou claims he'll look into finding Shun a few donors and drop by for a visit later. Midoriya was petrified at the news. He went on a rant about how Shun didn't deserve to get attacked and that now he wants to do everything in his power to bring his assailant to justice.

Looks like he's on the same page as (Y/n) and Shoto.

Right after school, Shoto and (Y/n) went right towards Endeavor's agency to meet with the big Godfather of the Hero Society in the flesh. Being Endeavor's son, Shoto didn't need permission to enter his father's office. Enji was there alright, except it was weird in Shoto's eyes as he wasn't in his hero uniform but casual clothing for a change. The air in the room was heavy and it was vastly clear that the man was sulking. Not that Enji sulking was out of character for him, just, you can tell he's not feeling himself. That's saying how much he's affecting the atmosphere. To top it all off, he's sporting a huge scar on the left side of his face that wasn't there a few months ago.

Shoto stood before his father's desk. Enji glanced up from his computer monitor and boy did his eye twitch. "I thought my son's supposed to be as strong as his old man," Enji furrowed his crimson eyebrows as he stood up. The sight of his professionally trained son sporting a black eye and a bandage on his nose and cheek was infuriating in his eyes. "Well? Who beat you?" He bellowed.

"She did," Shoto casually motioned towards (Y/n).

"You?" Enji stuck his nose up at the girl. "Why- How!?" In his eyes, (Y/n), the girl who put herself in an ice age, should've lost against his fire wielding son yet somehow she managed. Actually, what was the point in asking? If (Y/n) is still the strong girl Enji remembers her as thirty years prior, she'd easily beat down anyone if quirks weren't allowed.

"He was being a good boyfriend," (Y/n) crossed her arms.

"What now?" Shock spread across Enji's features.

"I'm dating your son... Deal with it," (Y/n) wore a smug grin but it soon faded. "Do you have a problem with us dating Enji?" She turned to Shoto with an apologetic look. "Sorry for throwing you under the bus," she turned back to Enji. "Did you know that Shoto was scared to death of telling you that we're dating? Just how horrible of a father are you for him to fear you like that?" Throw everything at Enji right now, like a punch to the gut, make sure he feels horrible and let it stick.

"I really couldn't give a shit if you two were dating or not," Enji shook his head. "He could be married to a girl with a horrible quirk or be gay for all that I know. As long as my future grandchild is strong, I couldn't care less if you're a thing," (Y/n) and Shoto both aren't quite sure if he's complimenting or insulting the two of them. Nice that Enji approves of the relationship, horrible that he thinks the way he does.

"Holy crap..." (Y/n) snickered. "Shoto was right."

"About what?" Enji's eyes narrowed in on the two teens.

"That you really would've judged us and that you're still living in the damned past! Quirk marriages should be illegal ya dipshit!" (Y/n) understands quirk marriages like the back of her hand. Back in the day, four out of ten marriages were arranged or were a result of quirk marriages. Many would argue that they're the same thing, but not to (Y/n). Ever since Shoto mentioned that his parents married for the sole purpose of their quirks almost a few months ago, that's when (Y/n) began to connect the dots and feared her entire relationship with Enji three decades ago was a quirk marriage in the works.

"Get out of here..." Enji turned his back.

"Oh!" (Y/n) perked up. "Did I strike a nerve?"

"Don't overdo it (Y/n)..." Shoto hissed. Because this girl really doesn't know boundaries.

"Like really though," (Y/n) punched Enji in his back. She couldn't put much force behind it as her hands were bruised and sore. "It fucking kills me hearing all the horrible shit you've done to your family! You have no damned clue as to where your oldest son is, your kids barely know each others names and for crying out loud your wife is in a mental hospital because of you! Was our relationship back in the day real or a fucking act? Better tell me now jerkass!" The room was silent, Enji hadn't made a move, and Shoto feared that (Y/n) did in fact get to Enji and that any second now he's about to either explode or do something he's never seen him do before.

"Father?" Shoto tilted his head.

"I'm not deserving of that title boy..." Enji shook his head.

"Crap..." Shoto was astonished.

"Now that you're actually listening," (Y/n) stepped forward. "I hope you know that Shoto genuinely cares about you except your actions give him more of a reason to push you away. I mean, he doesn't really understand love just so you know. Everything he knows comes from his mom and his friends too. He's proud that I'm his girlfriend and he wanted you to be the first person from his family to know except Rei beat you to the punch."

I was the first person he wanted to know? Enji thought in realization of the bigger picture. "I too was proud to be your partner back in the day," Enji took a seat at his desk. "That's why I'm glad he ended up with you."

"I get that you're trying to be genuine here but," (Y/n) shrugged. "If you should be proud of anyone, it should be Shoto. Not me, not yourself, but him. You don't understand how wonderful he is. Rei cries tears of happiness whenever she talks about him."

"I'm working on changing my ways and I don't need my ex to tell me that," Enji shook his head. "Hawks, All Might... They're thorns in my side but they're helping me act more like what a true symbol of Peace should be."

"Oh wow Hawks," it is true, Hawks really can melt anyone's heart. "Well... I can tell you've changed from the last time we've spoken."

"How so?" Enji hummed.

"From day one to now, Shoto's point of view on you has completely changed. Night and Day," over the last few months, Shoto has gone from absolutely hating his father to slowly opening back up. (Y/n) isn't quite sure how Enji has managed to sway Shoto's opinion on him, but he managed to gain Shoto's favor. "I'm glad you've changed. I only want what's best for Shoto. I want to know what happened to the insecure sixteen year old Enji I used to know. Maybe someday, you can bring your family back together."

"Agreed," Enji shared a mutual understanding glance with the girl standing before him. Shoto finally felt like he understood his father to some extent. He doesn't totally hate his guts now. The man's trying to change. Shoto came over and gave his girl a single armed embrace.

"Now that we're on the same page..." (Y/n) leaned into Shoto's side and rested her head upon his shoulder. "Did you hear the news about the boy who was left for dead last night?"

"The bionic rich kid?" Enji groaned.

"That's him," (Y/n) sighed. "The boy's my half brother. Someone tried to kill him and if it wasn't for Shoto... He'd be dead. I'm so thankful that he's around," tears began to well up in her eyes. "Can I please work under you as an apprentice Enji? I want to be strong and bring the person who tried to kill my brother to justice."

"You're the boy who kept the victim alive?" Enji had no idea that his son did such a heroic act as his son nodded to confirm his claim. "How exactly do you want me to help?" Enji had no interest in the topic as of now.

"We want to figure out who attacked her brother," Shoto spoke up.

"As far as I know... Shun knew some really BAD people. Apparently, his best friend is a criminal. Once he recovers enough that the doctors take him out of his coma, maybe we can get some information out of him and put a whole bunch of people behind bars. You'll look even better as the new Number One and we both win."

"I'll get my hands on the case," Enji drawled out. The outcome really did have it's perks especially now when Enji's struggling to look good in the eyes of the people.

"Oh my god!" (Y/n) didn't expect the man to give in so easily as she jumped up and embraced Shoto tightly around his neck. They embraced each other, pressing their foreheads together and kissed one another deeply.

"This means you'll be joining me on all my field assignments from now on," Enji glared at the two of them as they continued to kiss.

They parted the kiss. "Okay fine, fair," (Y/n) shrugged. "Thanks for taking me in as your apprentice."

"Yeah yeah get out of my office."

"Fine,"(Y/n) left the office without another word and that entire walk back to the UA campus was filled with Shoto praise for his fearless girlfriend. He loved how she effortlessly stood up to his father and much more.

Ping Ping Ping!

Went the small device that lied within (Y/n)'s coat pocket. "Changed your ringtone?" Shoto cocked his head in confusion.

"No," she dug through her pockets pulling out a black phone that vibrates like crazy within her palm. "Remember? The nurse gave me Shun's belongings last night right after we arrived at the hospital," the boy literally had nothing on hand besides his wallet and his phone and in this case his phone was receiving a call.

"Who's calling?" Shoto leaned forward to get a good look at the screen.

"Someone named..." (Y/n) squinted her eyes. "Touya."

So... I have the next chapter planned but it's gonna be too short for my liking. Do you want a full fledged backstory for Shun even though he already explained what cost him his limbs? If not... I guess I'm gonna need ideas on how to elongate the next chapter or you all can instead just have a short and sweet chapter?
