Chapter 14: Cherry Blossoms
IM BACK!!!
After a long week, it was about time for the weekend to come and settle in. The weekend was everyone's favorite time of the week as it gave students that desired two days rest and the same went to some adults. Although it was a time for fun and recovery, this weekened in particular came with mountains of good and bad. Shun has been taking time out of his busy schedule to come around for visits at the class dormitory ever since your harmonious release from the hospital. You both could agree that it's genuinely nice bonding with the sibling you never had. Some bad news came from Mr. Aizawa himself. The elder had mentioned that starting next week the class will be visiting the Gauntlet again in brand new groups since everyone is recovered. Nobody is looking forward to going there again... Shoto on the other hand has been steadily working on his quirks for both his fire and ice sides to be used in unison. He's made great effort as he can, in fact, use them both together. Not for very long though. In doing so, Shoto's been able to create more intricate designs out of ice and little by little, he's been gifting you with ice sculptures. Last bit of bad news, despite Bakugou's efforts to help get you caught up in class, you're swamped with work. Finally, the day you've been waiting for. Today is the big day that Shoto treats you to your first official date after being considered his girlfriend for a few weeks. Nothing like a good joyful day to make all your worries melt away.
Everything was going smoothly from the second you woke up to the determined time to leave. That was until the two of you were heading out as a truly unexpected yet unwelcome visitor had 'popped' in. Of course, your hard headed older brother had to visit right now of all times. Why now? He's visited every day this week, he couldn't skip out on one damn day? "Oh... You're here again," It'd be wrong to say that your sarcasm wasn't on point.
The sarcasm was truly on point or else Shun hadn't gotten the hint that he came around at the worst time possible. That realization was as clear as day as everyone watched the boy awkwardly scratch at the back of his neck with his mechanical arms. "Today's the day of the big date, isn't it?" His voice was low, as was his head as his purple bangs clouded his vision.
"Everybody knew that," Shoto spoke without his filter as expected. He could've spared the disappointment you have to admit.
Shun turned to you, "I didn't come here to hang with you anyways," although the man sounded as calm as ever, just about everyone caught on that he must be lying through his teeth. His higher pitched tone of voice was to blame. Plus, Why else is he here?
"Why'd you come then?" Oh Shoto... Reading everyone's inner thoughts and coming out as blunt as ever.
Shun's face lit up like a Christmas tree. "Shouta told me that my hero costume came in." He claimed all so confidently.
"He's not here," you corrected the boy. Everybody knew that.
Shun's crimson eyes nearly popped out of his head. "He isn't!?"
"Every weekend he's either doing hero work or babysitting a little girl named Eri," although you haven't personally met Eri, the class speaks highly of the little girl even going as far as to say that she's practically Aizawa's daughter. She isn't however, but she's a little girl that the man has the largest soft spot for. No wonder why he's been giving off the biggest dad vibes since minute one.
Shoto's irritation was on display for the world to see. For him to be reacting so strongly meant he's not the happiest camper. So much for the monotone boy you once knew. "Why don't you just be honest?" Shoto suggested with a deserving glare.
"Well..." Shun was uneasy as he was intimidated by the two toned boy of fire and ice. "I did come here for my hero costume. Figured since I was gonna be here I'd spend some time with (Y/n) too." And the truth finally came to light.
"Sorry to have wasted your time," you apologized. As adorable as Shun could be, he truly could've warned you about his arrival or else you would've told him to try again another day instead of wasting precious time. "Actually no, I take that back! You're Aizawa's apprentice now, you're going to be working with the class from now on. Might as well get to know them." There's an entire dormitory of students his age, he's bound to make a friend out of one of them. He's moody and somewhat violent like Bakugou, he's a potential friend. Kirishima and Midoriya can make anyone's heart melt. Iida could possibly shape up Shun's discouraging behavior. Jiro and Shun look like they'd get along great. That's just an idea, or a hunch however you want to put it. Shinsou's practically Shun's twin, maybe they'd get along? No... No they won't. Shinsou tries to dodge him whenever possible even went as far as to say he doesn't like him. Kaminari too, he's made a best friend out of Shinsou and could potentially do the same for Shun. He has endless options to choose from!
Shun nearly disagreed with your offer, but caught himself before he could speak his opinion. "You know... That's not such a bad idea." In truth, Shun sees no value in friends being he's never bothered to make one ever since his 'accident'. His old friends teased him about his robotic limbs and how idiotic he can get. New school, new peers. Time to make a change.
As if by coincidence, Midoriya was passing through. He was nose deep in his phone, smiling at something. It could be a meme, a cute picture or a conversation. Who knows? Out of the corner of his eye, he caught that glimmer of purple as that was when his head shot up with eyes radiating with delight. "Oh, Shun you're here again!" The boy with bushy hair flashed his signature smile towards your brother.
"He's actually here to hang with you," Shoto passed off your brother to his best friend as he stumbled in an attempt to stand up right.
"Yeah... Guess you could say that," Shun growled lightly as he recovered.
"Have fun you two!" You hooked your arm with Shoto's and fled the dorms before anymore interruptions could occur.
"What do you wanna do Shun?" Midoriya was touched by Shun's presence. Besides Shoto, nobodies ever went out of their way to hang around with him. Nothing came to mind. "What do you like to do?" The green haired boy dug a little deeper.
"Um..." Shun hummed as he scratched his chin.
"Do you like to watch movies, play video games, sports?" Shun shook his head in disagreement with everything Midoriya suggested. Shun can't remember the last time he's sat down and enjoyed a movie, the last time a game controller has entered his grip and sports never appealed to him to begin with. "Then what exactly do you do in your spare time?"
"I never have spare time," the man admits. "I have to free up my schedule just to come here. That's why I'm technically not Shouta's apprentice just yet..." From online school to gym to his police apprenticeship, Shun doesn't have the time to really build upon his personal interests and hobbies.
"You're a busy guy aren't you?" Midoriya figured as he too struggles to free up his schedule for friends. "Enjoy your day off then! I picked up a few movies the other day that I've been itching to watch. Wanna watch them with me!?"
"O-okay then," Shun let everything go as they went. Today is apparently his first lazy day in forever.
Shoto and yourself had boarded a train to a town a few hours over. For some odd reason, Shoto was very sparing on information of any kind regarding the trip or date in general. Even small talk was a bust. You had asked why he chose the town HOURS away rather than staying IN town despite there being cherry blossoms all over the place even on UA campus. Shoto claimed that he'll explain later to nearly every question that bombarded him. Next, you bothered to ask him how his work studies with Endeavor was going since it was said work studies that led him to save you from the Ice forever ago. Shoto answered with, "Hate It" and buried the subject almost immediately after. This conversation really was dead...
"Okay..." Your patience was being tested. You can only handle so much silence before it really bugs you. "Are you okay Shoto? Why are you even more antisocial than usual?" Which is saying a lot since he only talks whenever someone refers to him directly. You'll never catch Shoto starting a conversation by choice.
Shoto's eyes enlarged for a second. It was finally the realization that sat in that helped him understand where he went wrong. "I want to save everything for the actual date," he spoke slowly and with care. Your eyes could trace a faint glossy glow upon his forehead. Was Shoto sweating? Can he even sweat? Isn't his quirk similar enough to yours that it regulates his body temp to make sure he doesn't overheat or get cold?
Oh... The big picture just became clear as day. "You're... Nervous? Oh my god that's so cute!" You can still remember how Enji would get nervous back in the day. He'd try to overpower his anxiety by acting all 'tough.' Despite how much you hate him now, Enji was genuinely adorable in the past. Like how back in UA his quirk was sensitive to emotions. You manage to startle or enrage him, his facial hair would ignite into a bounty of flames. It feels good knowing you make your boyfriend nervous. That means he truly cares!
Shoto was against the idea of admitting his nervousness and continued to stare out the train window. You didn't pester him about the subject and respect his wishes as that's what a true girlfriend would do. That's when your hand found his and held it firmly as to show you'll always be there to support him. Just out of the corner of your eye, you could faintly see a smile creep onto the boy's face. The rest of the ride was comfortably silent.
Once the train came to its destination, Shoto guided you to the exit by the hand and the station was a beauty in itself. Cherry blossom trees loomed just before the canopy of the train station leaving their breathtaking pink beauty on display for everyone to see. A squirrel was hopping from tree to tree in an almost effortless fashion, almost flying. With each jump and landing, petals fell off the branches and fluttered to the copper bricks below. You've never seen so much pink floral beauty in all your life and completely take back the thought that Shoto was wrong to leave town in the first place. This was like a scene right out of a movie.
Shoto took a stand at your side and indulged in the sight. "Mom used to take me here all the time when I was younger before I got my quirk," it was at this point that you understood why Shoto was holding off on telling his many stories. Now was a more perfect time than ever to tell them. "Most of Japan is high tech. Here, everything is traditional from the buildings to the people. Mom and Dad actually designed our home after this city."
"I always wondered why the homes back home were modern but yours is traditional."
"I like it that way," hence his decoration choice for his dorm room at school. Shoto began to walk forwards only to turn around as you didn't bother to follow. "You... Coming?" He tilted his head to one side.
"Yeah," You ran to meet up with him. "Everything here is so pretty."
"We haven't even got into town yet."
"Oh... Yeah," this is only the train station, the tip of the iceberg. There's more to see. "Let's go."
Shoto had an entire day planned from sight seeing to eating. It was nice eating some traditional dishes like authentic soba, tempura and onigiri all the while touring the town. Practically the entire small town was covered in cherry blossoms, tiny bonsais, weeping willows, tiny creatures and polite locals. Everywhere you went was a new surprise. The savory scent of sizzling seafood waft throughout the air, making any stomach full or empty crave more. Every local you'd pass by wished a good afternoon. It wasn't uncommon for pet dogs and cats to be roaming the cobblestone streets. In fact, a grey cat with luscious long fur was approaching the two of you as we speak.
The tiny creature began rubbing its body across Shoto's legs, curling it's prehensile tail around his knees. Comforting purrs vibrated the being's chest as a cry for attention. Shoto, puzzled, just stood there unsure of what to do. "Can't you see that it wants your attention?" You knelt down and the cat was more than happy to indulge in your affection. The creature began to bury its plush face into your palm. The soothing warmth from it's fur warmed your fingers and it's furr was that of the softest in the world.
Although hesitant, your boyfriend got down on his knees and dragged a lone hand down the cat's back. The tail practically captured his hand, demanding for more in which Shoto wasn't afraid to give the creature exactly what it wanted. "I've always liked cats," Shoto admits as it was his daring determination that motivated him to pick up the cat on the spot. Much to your surprise, it lied within his arms in bliss as it rested its head upon Shoto's elbow with the biggest pleasurable smile it could conjure. "Do you like cats?" Shoto questioned and held it for you to pet.
"I never had a pet growing up," you admit. You do recall begging your mother for a pet of any kind ever since you brought home a stray dog as a child. That dog was taken to the pound the same day, but it never stole your interest in wanting one down the line. "I'm a sucker for babies though. I mean, who doesn't love puppies and kittens or baby animals in general? Only heartless people." You've even caught some of your most heartless teachers look at pictures of puppies and piglets whenever they're too stressed or upset.
"Point made," Shoto found himself shrugging. He tried to set the cat down, but it jumped up in protest with a desperate meow. Apparently, it doesn't want to leave. "Um... What should I do now?" Put it down and break it's heart? Continue to love on it and become heartbroken at the end of the day when he has to leave? Two incredibly hard decisions.
You had no answers, "what can you really do? It wants to love on you, are you really gonna deny the affection?" Personally, you couldn't break the little thing's heart.
"I... Guess not," Shoto found himself giving into the cat's influence and continued to hold it. "We're going to head home soon. I don't want to break it's heart when we leave."
"We're leaving already?" You nearly gasped.
"We've been here since noon... It's nearly five now."
"Time flies when you're having fun," you shrugged.
"Well... There is one more place we can check out if you want to kill more time," the boy suggested.
"Lead the way!" You snickered and scratched the cat playfully on the head. Shoto knew the place like the back of his hand and began his stroll to the middle of the town. A small Koi pond. Shoto was hesitant to take you here in the first place since it was a pond that froze you in time in the first place. In short that may be the truth, but it's not like you're going for a swim so it should be just fine. Luckily, you were thrilled to be here. The second you approached the pond, the koi began poking their heads out above the water to say hi with their gaping mouths that snapped at the water's surface. Even the cat was intrigued by the sight as it hopped down out of Shoto's cuddly arms to await at the edge of the pond and bat at the water to play.
"If that ain't the most adorable thing I've ever seen, then I don't know what is."
Shoto scoffed, "I thought I was the most adorable thing you've seen..."
"I... Never said that," you had to pause and think for a second before hatching a reply.
"You said that I'm cute when I sleep."
That's when your face went beet red. "I only ever said that when you're sleeping," apparently, you can't talk to yourself when Shoto's napping now because clearly he isn't always asleep.
"Am I still the most adorable thing?" Shoto continued to push on the subject until he hears the words he's searching for.
"Yes... Yes you are," you gave in.
A cocky smirk occupied Shoto's face, "ditto."
"Quit melting my heart!" You squealed.
"Let's sit," Shoto motioned for the stone bench directly off to his side. The cat was still playing around with the koi so you took Shoto's offer and sat down on the bench. Your wildcard of a boyfriend was lingering around behind you, but there was no need to pay him any mind. Something was going on, that being you heard the rustle of leaves on a tree nearby, that much you knew.
A wisp of cold brushed against your ear, causing you to jolt, only to find that Shoto was wedging a cherry blossom into your hair and positioned it as perfectly as he could to compliment your beauty. Curiosity getting the better of you, your hand brushed up against the delicate being of pink as it's soft yet oddly waxy coat tingles your senses. Shoto reached out and caught your hand before you could ruin his work with that shy smile of his that you've come to love. "It's delicate and pretty like you... Don't you think?" His words were working at your heart strings once again as he progressed to sit down. Why is he so perfect?
"Didn't I tell you to quit melting my heart?"
"Isn't that my job?" Shoto hummed. "You're always cold," okay... You're not very sure if Shoto was flirting or if he's acting dense and clueless.
"Just quit talking..." Overwhelmed by his affection, all you could do is press your forehead to Shoto's and he returned the action.
It was Shoto however who brought the moment to an end. "Why do you press your head into me like that all the time? Well... Not all the time, but you've been doing it lately." Ever since the hospital, you've been leaning your head into Shoto's especially whenever he parts ways for the day. Apparently, you weren't even aware that you were doing such a thing.
With Shoto's question came memories nearly forgotten like a reel of film. A tear was tickling the corner of your eye. "Ever since I could remember, it's what me and my dad did whenever he came home from work. He was always on business trips and worked late, so we never really got to see each other. Whenever we do that," the forehead hugging you meant. "Everything became okay because we were reunited. Even though my dad is back into my life, I miss our little forehead 'hugs' the most."
Once again, Shoto grew jealous of your father daughter relationship. What he'd give to have a father that remotely cared about him more than his own quirks. Your heartfelt moment was sweet nevertheless. "That's cute... I never would've known," Shoto admits and wraps an arm around your backside. "You haven't seen him in a while. Tomorrow is Sunday, Should we go see him?"
"Honestly... No," you chuckled.
"I thought you loved him-"
"I wanna go one day without having Shun up my ass. I don't wanna go straight to the source."
Shoto blinked, "point made."
"Speaking of such," you rested your head upon Shoto's shoulder. "Have you and Enji ever been on good terms?"
"Our relationship turned sour when mom left," Shoto sighed. "We've been better as of lately. Not by much though..."
"How does he feel about us dating?" You've always wondered how Enji would react to such.
Shoto blankly stared out into the pond, "He doesn't know."
"Why not?" Suddenly, and you're not so sure why, but you feel offended.
"What's the point in telling him?" Shoto turned to you. "The subject never came up, It's not his business and it's not like he cares. Actually, he would," Shoto quickly corrected himself. "That bastard still lives in the past and wants me to enter a quirk marriage later on. He'd probably say something like he doesn't want us dating because you're his ex or because of your quirk since I already have an ice quirk. Either way, I have no reason to tell him. I'm not gonna listen to him anyways."
"Quirk marriages," you subconsciously questioned out loud. "You know what, I respect your decision. He doesn't know, he doesn't know. It's not like you're afraid to tell him... Right?"
"I'd tell him in a heartbeat but I truly don't care if he knows or not," that's a lie. Shoto wouldn't dare tell Enji about his relationship with you. He doesn't want to hear his father insult you to hell and back, that's the true reason why the subject has been buried for as long as it has. That day in the Gauntlet had brought that fear into a new light as Shoto is now afraid to truly confront his father now.
"That's good to know," to be honest, you haven't felt this refreshed in a good long while and appreciated the moment for what it was.
'Click'
"Huh?" You hummed and turned to Shoto. He had his phone out and pointed at you. "What are you doing?"
"I took a picture," Shoto turned his phone around and there you were, on the screen staring out onto the pond with a smile of pure bliss and that breathtaking blossom in your hair. "I hope you don't mind. It felt right."
"Phones have cameras?" Was all you really cared about.
"You didn't know that?" Shoto furrowed his brow.
"Cameras on phones weren't a thing thirty years ago," you awed.
"You've had a modern phone for weeks though..."
"I only know how to make calls on that thing!" Modern technology is SO confusing.
"I'll show you how to take a picture later-"
"Show me now!" You snapped.
"O-Okay," Shoto could only go with the flow as your quite literally threw your phone into his hands. He immediately showed you the camera icon on the home doc of your touch screen and 'Poof' the screen transformed into a front facing camera and you were in a state of awe.
Both Shoto and yourself were in the frame. You froze, heart pounding like crazy. "I want my first picture to be of us together," you held out the phone, thumb hovering over the button. This was a punch in the nostalgia as you remember holding a camera for the first time as a child. The picture must've caught Shoto off guard as he wasn't prepared in the slightest with that usual blank mug of his. You've never delete this photo though, this memory will live on forever.
"I say we go home now," Shoto suggested for the second time today.
"I agree," you stood up from the bench with your boyfriend to follow. That cat from before was scampering on up to you both with an expecting stare as it wanted to be picked up. "Well aren't you a charmer?" You knelt down and the cat happily invited itself into your arms.
"We can't take that thing home..." Shoto reminded you.
"Why not? It's not like it has a collar, it's fur is matted and it's been following us all day. It clearly doesn't have a home."
"Can we really have a pet in the dorms?" Shoto stared at the matted cat in realization that it must've been homeless.
"Koda has a million," you point out.
"They live in cages though..."
"I'm taking him home with us," you sang. "Aizawa and Shinsou love cats, I'm sure he'll let us keep him or her... Whatever you are," the cat meowed in approval with it's glossy energetic eyes. "If Aizawa doesn't allow it, I'll ask my parents to hang onto him. If they can't take him, I'll find him a home somehow."
"Fine," Shoto gave in. You wanted the cat, then the cat you shall keep. This thing was a charmer that much Shoto could agree with. "Time to go home."
The trip back to the dorms was smooth sailing. The cat slept the entire train ride, as did Shoto not to anyone's surprise. Upon entering the dorms, there was a commotion of some sort. The girls were all gathered around the couch with their phones out and chatting up a storm in loud whispers. The two of you approached them, "What's going on?" You asked. Upon speaking, Momo fled the room.
Ashido stepped to the plate, "your brother is soooooooooooooo cute right now!" The girl squealed.
"Again, what's going on?" You cocked a brow. Uraraka simply motioned you in her direction on the opposite side of the couch to find that Shun was sitting upright fast asleep. Nothing out of the ordinary. Except for that of a slumbering Midoriya all curled up on the boy's side. As an added effect thanks to the girls, they laid a blanket over their laps. "That is fucking adorable," you admit and found yourself whipping out your phone to snap a picture. Afterwards, Shoto tried to wake the boys but you put a stop to his plans. "Let them sleep. I wouldn't disturb one of your naps."
"Okay... Goodnight then," Shoto went to bed. That cat from the town over too was sleeping in your arms. Bedtime for everyone then! You too headed off to bed, changed into nightclothes and jumped into the plush bedding. The cat curled itself upon your chest, poking your nose playfully with one lone paw. That's when you noticed, this cat had two differently colored eyes: One turquoise, one grey, just like Shoto's. Well, the eyes were his same color but not on the right sides of the face being Shoto's grey was on the left and the turquoise on the right while the cat's was the complete opposite. Maybe this cat was fate calling, telling you that Shoto was your soulmate afterall.
