Chapter 34

Jacob sat in his chair against the wall leading to Eden's room. The walls were thick but he could hear every scream and every sob coming from inside. Of course he had heard screaming and crying before, when he was training new soldiers it was basically day and night, but those screams...they were different. They were pleading and desperate, there was still a tiny sliver of hope in them when they screamed.

Eden's sobs weren't a bargain. They were hopeless. They were heartbreaking.

They were beyond the screams of torture, they were somehow worse. And Jacob stayed and listened to every one of them. He couldn't move, his legs wouldn't let him.

After a long time of cursing and screaming, the sound of sobbing quieted down. Jacob couldn't bring himself to walk in to check on her though, for some reason he was holding back.

John walked in and glanced between his brother and the locked door. "Sounds like she finally cooled off." John stated and Jacob glared at his brother, if he hadn't stopped himself then he might have even hit John, but he was standing too far away and he couldn't explain hitting him so he didn't.

John obviously saw the dark expression on his brother's face and took a step back. "I should go, check on something for Joseph." He explained and turned on his heels and walked away.

Jacob watched his brother walk away and looked back down at his feet. He had helped Joseph prepare for so long for this to happen, he trained his soldiers and he supplied his bunkers and he completed his orders, but if he was being honest Jacob had never expected this to actually happen.

Joseph was his brother and he needed to protect him and John, so of course he helped his brothers with their project for a better life. He knew that while he was making his Judges and his Chosen that they were becoming stronger, as well as the rest of their soldiers, but no one had shown him how much pain he was causing the way Eden had.

He could have killed her a long time ago, hell he could have just let her die a handful of times and then his hands would have been clean of the mess of killing Hope County's treasured Deputy. So why didn't he?

Part of Jacob really didn't know why he couldn't let this go and just finish what she started, but the other part knew exactly what happened.

She got into his head. Maybe she meant to or maybe she didn't, Jacob had no idea, but she did. She wasn't always kind to him, she was rarely even polite to him, but she didn't need to be? It was strange, even when they first met she could get away with things no one else could. Like spitting at him from inside the cages or lipping off during her first couple of trials.

Any one of those things would've meant certain death for anyone else, but she got away with it. Why? Maybe Jacob thought she was intriguing, or maybe she was just so goddamn cocky that Jacob was waiting for it to satisfying bite her later.

Those were good reasons, but none of them explained why Jacob's chest ached so painfully listening to Eden mourn. Or why every sob seemed to make the air in Jacob's lungs disappear.

Nor did it explain why Jacob wanted to smack the hint of satisfaction off of John's face.

It was driving Jacob crazy, why did he feel like he was making such a terrible mistake just sitting outside that room?

Joseph appeared from around the corner of the hallway, studying his brother as he approached the door. Jacob stood up and made eye contact with Joseph. Jacob tried to make his expression as blank as possible but no matter what he did he always felt like his brother could see right through him.

Neither of them said anything as Joseph slowly opened the door and walked in the room. He closed the door shut behind him.

Jacob waited, frozen standing up. He wasn't sure what he was waiting for, maybe for Eden to start shouting at Joseph or at least tell him to get out. But he didn't hear anything.

Jacob pressed his ear to the door to try to hear better but still couldn't hear anything. Jacob sat back in his chair and waited. He wasn't really sure what he was waiting for but he figured it would be better than waiting at the door like a lost puppy.

Blood was pooled and smeared across the floor, even the walls had blood wiped on them. The stench of fresh blood and flesh filled the room with an uncomfortable smell, and a worse feeling.

Joseph closed the door and walked into the room, keeping an eye on the Deputy sitting against the wall as he picked up the metal chair that had been knocked over; most likely kicked.

The atmosphere in the room was depressing, even for a righteous man such as Joseph. It was so unbearably quiet, so eery. But Joseph didn't say a word as he sat down opposite of the Deputy.

Dutch had been laid on the bare mattress on the rickety old bed frame in the dark corner of the room. The blood had soaked into the mattress but none of the people in the room seemed to care.

Dutch looked like he was asleep, except for the blood all over him from the struggle of the Deputy trying to lift him up onto the bed. His arms had been laid by his sides, his hands perfectly still. It was strange to see someone laying on a bed but not breathing, it felt wrong. But Joseph knew exactly what happened.

The Deputy was sitting against the wall, her legs stretched out in front of her with her hands in her lap. They were stained red with Dutch's blood. She never lifted her head from off of her chest once to see who had so rudely came into the room when all she had the energy for was being alone and miserable.

Joseph stayed in his chair in silence for a long long time, giving the Deputy time to sit in her own sadness.

"Why...them..." Her whisper was only audible in the stifling silence of the room.

Joseph didn't say anything, he knew she wasn't done.

The Deputy slowly raised her head to look at Joseph. Her face was covered in blood in smeared hand prints along her cheeks and mouth and nose. Joseph's expression never waivered.

"Why is it never me?" She asked Joseph, her eyes were so dull and glazed over Joseph wasn't really sure if she was looking at him. "Everyone else that I love...everyone I try to protect...they always suffer while I live. When will it end?"

She looked back down at her bloody hands and shook her head slowly.

Joseph paused for a moment. "God has a plan for you, he has brought you to this place for a reason."

"What reason." The Deputy scoffed. "To die here in this room, trapped with you?" She looked back up at Joseph with a glare.

"Whatever reason God has, he has a plan for you. Every decision you've ever made has brought you here, to this moment, with me. That is not by chance or coincidence, or even luck, it was the divine plan."

The Deputy didn't say anything, she didn't know what she could say. She didn't have the energy to fight him, not anymore.

So she looked away from his stare and down at her bloody lap.

Joseph knew that she was done talking, now he just needed to let her sit in her own head, with all that he knew about her she wouldn't last long in there.

When the door to Eden's room opened again, she expected it to be Joseph that walked in. But instead she saw Jacob standing in her doorway. He looked the exact same as he normally did, the same army jacket and stone expression as always.

He managed to keep his emotionless expression the same as he walked into her room despite all of the blood. Of course he did, he was no stranger to blood and the stench of death.

He walked over to Joseph's chair, and pushed it aside gently. He sat down on the ground across from Eden and lifted his knees with his hands, using them to hold them up while he sat with her.

Eden didn't say anything at first, she didn't know what to say. She had honestly believed that Jacob could change, but here he was, sitting in front of her proving her wrong. While she looked at him all she could think about was the name she had almost forgotten about; Klaus.

She had always dreamed that he could change, that he would be the person she fell in love with again, that he would realize he was hurting her, but he never did. Because he could never change, ever. And here she was again, the poor fool that fell for the lies and trap again.

"Are you going to say something?" Jacob asked, breaking the silence. He said it so...quietly, almost like he was worried about what she would say back.

Eden swallowed. "You knew."

"I didn't know this was going to-"

Eden interrupted him. "No you knew. I just couldn't see it. Every meeting, every talk, you always knew this was going to happen. Didn't you?" Jacob didn't say anything, he didn't even look away, he just kept staring at Eden.

"You were always just biding your time, waiting for Joseph's word to attack...Weren't you?" She asked, but her voice never got loud, it was low, and sharp, and hostile.

Jacob blinked and looked away from her, as if he were ashamed of what she was accusing him of. "He's my family, and I swore that when the time came I would do my job, and that is protecting him and his followers."

Eden and Jacob sat in silence again. She wanted to get angry and demand why he did what he did but she already got her answer, no matter what happened he would always be under Joseph's control.

"So what happens now?" Eden asked and Jacob brushed a stray strand of hair out of his face and back into its usual position.

"I don't know, but you'll probably hate it." Jacob admitted and Eden nodded and pressed her hands to her head.

"Are you ok?" Jacob asked quietly, he knew that the end of the world didn't mean all of her health problems went away, and after the fight she had just been through she must have been hurting a lot.

"Not even close." Eden said numbly and brushed her hair back. She didn't know why she was being so...calm? She shouldn't have been calm, she shouldn't have given Jacob the satisfaction of talking to her so calmly and casually, but for some reason it just seemed too hard to stay pissed off.

Jacob stared at her like he wanted to say something else, he wanted to make her understand that this wasn't his plan, he wasn't the one that made all of this happen, but why? Why was it so important to him for her to know that this wasn't his fault?

Was it because it was so extreme what happened? Or was it because he didn't want her to see him as the monster he really was...
