Chapter 32
Joseph's Compound looked abandoned as Eden walked up to the front gate. She had parked on the road and walked down the rest of the way. There was a strange silence surrounding the compound, it made Eden's skin crawl. There weren't even birds chirping, just the softest breeze and the sound of Eden's boots in the dirt.
The gate to the compound was open, not even blocked by a truck. Before she turned the corner in to the compound Eden felt her pistol on her hip, making sure she had something to protect herself if this meeting came to that.
With a deep breath Eden stepped around the corner, expecting to see Joseph waiting for her. But the compound was empty. There weren't any Project members watching her, no one was waiting, it was dead quiet. Joseph did say to meet him alone, maybe he was alone too.
Although extremely cautious, Eden stepped into the compound, making her way to the church. Eden raised her hand to knock on the door of the church when suddenly the doors opened. Eden backed away from the church a few steps as Joseph walked out, stepping into the dusty daylight.
He didn't take his eyes off her for a second, gazing into her soul as he stepped closer to her. Eden stood her ground, not backing away. Movement behind Joseph made her break their eye contact as John, Faith, and Jacob stepped out of the church behind Joseph. Faith and John stood to Joseph's left side, and Jacob stood to his right so that they flanked their brother.
It was exactly like the first time Eden had ever seen the family so long ago. And that sent a chill up her spine, but she wasn't about to let herself look scared to the Seeds.
"And the Lamb broke the fifth seal, and I saw under the altar the souls of the Martyrs, slain because of the Word of God..." Joseph raised his hand to point at Eden, slowly taking a step closer to her as he spoke. "You've made Martyrs of my family... and I am prepared to do the same to yours."
Eden's heart raced as Joseph stepped within arm's length of her. Lowering his finger, Joseph walked past Eden, never taking his eyes off of her as he passed her. Jacob, John, and Faith stared at the Deputy as she turned around to see a horrifying sight.
Her friends were standing behind her, their eyes clouded from the Bliss. Whitehorse, Pratt, and Hudson were forced to kneel on the ground, their hands bound behind their backs. Their friends held guns as if they were waiting for a command, all standing patiently as if everything were normal.
"W-wha-" Eden tried to stammer out but Joseph cut her off.
"All of that conviction, misplaced in weak, sinning souls." The words were like venom in his mouth.
How could he get them? Mary May, Nick, Pastor Jerome, Tammy, Tracey, Wheaty, Jess, Sharky, Hurk, Grace? How?
"You came to this county a long time ago, Deputy. You came and tried to take from us what God himself had bestowed upon us, our home, our freedom, our faith. You believed what you were doing was right, was just, but where has it led you? Where have your sins brought you?
"Your friends have been taken and tortured, and it's your fault." Eden shook her head.
"Countless people have been killed and it is your fault."
"No-"
"The world is on fire and it is your fault." Joseph got closer to her, gritting his teeth as he spoke. "Was it worth it? Was it?"
Eden's hands were shaking. This wasn't a peace talk. Joseph could see it written all over her face her fear, he could see the disbelief on her face as he confronted her, and it was exactly what he was expecting to see.
Joseph turned and raised his arms out wide as he stepped towards the church. "When you first came here I gave you a choice to walk away." He stopped and turned around. "You chose not to."
Eden looked at the Seed family as they stood and watched as Joseph preached.
"In the face of God I am making you that offer one last time." The Seed siblings looked shocked.
John especially looked more confused than any of them. "Brother what are you-" Joseph raised his hand to stop his brother.
"Put down your guns. And you take your friends. You leave me my flock... and you go in peace." He took a step forward, away from his siblings.
"Go in peace?" Hudson scoffed. "You're fucking insane." Eden turned around to look at her friends, her coworkers.
"Is he? We never should have been here in the first place." Pratt hung his head in defeat, after all of the time that passed he was still too terrified to even look up and see Jacob standing there.
Whitehorse looked up at Eden and nodded his head. "You know what to do, Rook." He sounded so sure, but Eden didn't have a clue what was right. She didn't even know what was happening.
Eden turned back around and saw that Joseph was standing right in front of her. Jacob, John, and Faith stepping closer to flank their brother.
Joseph looked up to the sky and held out his arms. "Remember..." He looked back down at Eden. "God is watching."
Eden's heart was racing, as well as her thoughts. That's why Joseph asked to meet her. He was letting her leave, she could take Whitehorse and Pratt and Hudson and get them out. They could get out of this hell and back to the normal world and get help.
But what would happen to the others?
Eden couldn't believe that she had to make this choice, stay and fight or leave and risk everything. She was breathing heavy and it was like her head was spinning, she looked over Joseph's shoulder at the Seed siblings, and then back at Joseph.
The world seemed to freeze. Suddenly everything was going so slow it was like Eden couldn't breathe. Her mind completely stopped and she didn't know what to do.
Joseph could see the lost expression in her eyes, maybe somewhere deep down it was pleasing him to see the Deputy so stuck, but if that was the case then he wouldn't show it. Eden turned back to look at her friends.
"Don't do it, don't fall for it!" Hudson shouted and Pastor Jerome hit her in the back of her head with the butt of his gun, knocking her onto her stomach in the dirt. Eden flinched and looked back at Joseph.
"Make a choice." Joseph demanded.
Eden looked at her friends again. All of them brainwashed and controlled. They were standing there like shells of the people she knew and cared about, but they were in there.
Eden turned back around and met Joseph Seed's intense stare again. "No."
"What are you doing Rook?" Pratt cried out.
"I'm not turning my back on my family." Eden locked her jaw and Joseph let out a sigh.
He looked down to the ground as if he were expecting her to say that. "Every slight."
He brought his eyes back up to Eden's. "Every injustice. Every choice reveals our SIN."
Even the Seed siblings could sense the unnatural anger growing in their brother's voice.
"John was wrong. Your sin is not Wrath. Because you would rather watch the world burn and suffer than swallow your Pride." Joseph pushed his finger into Eden's chest, making her take a step back from him.
He held out his arms again, looking into the sky. "And the Lamb broke the sixth seal and lo, there was a great earthquake." The wind suddenly picked up and swirled dust around them.
"The sun became black," Joseph knocked over a barrel of Bliss, "and the moon turned to blood!" He tossed another barrel to the ground, the sickening green mist spewing everywhere and making Eden choke as she got knocked to the ground.
Thick green fog suddenly surrounded Eden, blocking out the light. She coughed and choked, swinging one of her arms around to try and clear the Bliss away while using her other arm to hold herself up.
The fog cleared up enough for Eden to see in front of her and she quickly got onto her feet.
As she grabbed her pistol out of her holster she heard Joseph's voice boom. "Your friends now see the truth! They welcome Eden's Gate into their hearts!" The last part was the most terrifying thing Eden had ever heard. "They will die for me!"
The Bliss lifted, revealing the former captives of Eden's Gate gripping their guns, getting ready to attack. Eden jumped behind a large box and found a gun lying on the ground. She hesitated to grab it since she was fighting her friends but she decided that having some protection was better than nothing.
Eden's head was pounding from the Bliss but she peaked around the edge of the box. Before she could get a good look at what was going on bullets whizzed past her head and she quickly ducked back behind the box.
She needed to find a way to snap her friends out of the Bliss, there was no other way to get through this without killing them.
Eden took a breath and gripped the gun that she found. She jumped out from behind the box, running to hide behind another box. Pastor Jerome ran over to her and tried to hit her with his gun but she took out his legs and knocked him to the ground. When he hit the ground he must have hit his head because he groaned and blinked, the Bliss in his eyes cleared up and disappeared.
Suddenly Pastor Jerome realized he was in the middle of a fight and sat up to hide behind the box with Eden. "What's happening?" He asked and checked his gun.
"The Seeds, they were never going to agree to peace they've just been waiting, Joseph is using the Bliss on the others to control them." Eden said and Pastor Jerome glanced past her.
"Are you ok?" He asked and Eden looked back at him.
"I will be." Eden told him. "They haven't been exposed to the Bliss for long so it shouldn't take much to bring them out."
"I'll follow you." Pastor Jerome assured her and Eden nodded.
Bullets hit the dirt next to them, making dust clouds as their friends shot at them without thinking. The bullets paused for a second and that's when Eden and Pastor Jerome made their move. They leapt out from behind the box and ran straight for their friends, yanking them and pulling them down to the ground behind cover.
Eden held Sharky down to the ground as well as she could, then out of desperation she smacked him in the face, not hard enough to really hurt him but enough to hopefully snap him out of the Bliss.
Sharky yelped and shook his head, his eyes clearing up from the Bliss and returning to their usual mischievous blue. "Thank god," Eden sighed, got off of him and pulled him closer to the wall of the Invidia cabin she was hiding behind.
"What the hell is happening?" Sharky shouted and grabbed his shotgun off the ground.
"Joseph Seed lost his goddamn mind! I can't explain right now but we need to get everyone out of the Bliss ASAP." Eden grabbed Sharky's shoulder and looked him in the eye. "No shooting, we can't hurt them when they're on the Bliss, they probably don't even know what's happening. Where did they grab you?" She shouted and Sharky was clearly having a hard time putting together what was happening in the confusion.
"Down by the old grain elevator, they must've gotten Hurk too!" He answered and Eden nodded.
"We need to wake them up, get them down then gently, look at me, GENTLE, don't seriously hurt anybody." Eden made sure that Sharky understood through the chaos and confusion. Sharky nodded and jumped out from behind the wall.
He yelled something incomprehensible and ran straight at Hurk, taking him down in a flying tackle. If Eden wasn't so focused on not dying she probably would've laughed at watching Sharky leap off of a box in such a way as to send his feet higher than his head. But right now she couldn't.
Joseph's voice echoed around them. "I gave you every chance and you threw it away! You've brought the world crashing down around us! Don't you see that?" His voice shrieked from somewhere Eden couldn't place.
Eden turned her head right in time to see Tammy aim a baseball bat at her head, swinging so hard that when Eden dodged it, the baseball bat made a dent in the wood wall next to her head. Eden grabbed the baseball bat and yanked it out of Tammy's hands, which almost knocked her over. Eden figured that all she really needed was one good hit on her to knock the Bliss out so she jumped to her feet, tossing the baseball bat out of reach.
Tammy raised her fists and tried to punch Eden in the face. Eden dodged and got behind Tammy, giving her a swift smack to the back of the head. Tammy fell into the wall of the cabin and turned around, the Bliss had disappeared from her eyes.
Eden opened her mouth to ask if she was ok but Tammy grabbed her and yanked her to the ground. An arrow whooshed over both of their heads' and embedded itself in the trunk of a tree nearby. Eden whipped her head around and saw Jess standing with another arrow already notched in her bow.
Eden and Tammy rushed around the backside of the cabin. "Bliss?" Tammy shouted and Eden nodded.
"We've got to wake the others up." Eden told her and Tammy grabbed a shovel that had been propped up against the wall they were hiding behind.
"Got it, you go left, I go right." Tammy said and ran around the right side of the building, holding her shovel up in defense.
Eden found a broken wooden handle of a shovel and grabbed that, peaking around the left side of the building and seeing Nick looking in the opposite way. As quietly as possible, Eden snuck up behind him and hit him in the back of the head.
It knocked him to his knees and Eden wrapped her arms around his chest from behind, yanking him behind the wall. Nick snapped out of it before Eden let you go, making him shout and pull out of Eden's grip.
Eden tried to shout something to him but he grabbed the collar of her jacket and shoved her to the ground, effectively knocking the wind out of her chest. Nick pulled back his fist like he was going to punch her in the face so Eden held up her hands to stop his punch and squeezed her eyes shut.
"Dep? What the hell are you doing here?"
Nick's voice had never sounded better. Eden opened her eyes and Nick let go of her collar. He helped her to her feet and kept a hand on her shoulder while she wheezed.
"Those fucking Peggies snatched me out of my damn hangar!" He shouted and Eden straightened up, feeling the air coming back into her lungs.
"We gotta wake everyone up." Eden said and Nick nodded.
"Got it, you ok?" He asked and Eden nodded and clapped his shoulder.
"Deputy, the time has come for your flesh and blood to be used for atonement! Your friends cannot protect you now!" John's voice echoed slyly through the air.
Eden let out an enraged groan and looked at Nick. "Let's get our friends back." She said and Nick grabbed his gun off the ground. Together, Eden and Nick jumped out from behind the wall and ran to the side of the church, Nick grabbed Wheaty by the shoulder as they ran and Eden jumped on Pratt, taking him to the ground like she did with Sharky.
Pratt resisted and tried to punch Eden off of him but she held one arm down with her knee and his other arm with her hands. He tried to headbutt Eden but she dodged it and backhanded him across the cheek. "Sorry!" She shouted and rolled off of him as his eyes cleared up.
Pratt instantly knew what was happening and pressed himself up against the metal fence by the church. "This is it! This is it! I knew something terrible was going to happen!" He screamed and held his gun close to his chest with shaky hands.
Eden grabbed his hand and looked him in the eye. "We need you Staci! We can finish this right now! You need to help me wake them up then we can finish this!" She yelled but Pratt shook his head.
"I can't help! I can't hurt them!" He kept shaking his head and pushed himself away from Eden.
"Then stay here and stay safe!" She ordered and Pratt nodded, scrunching back further into his hiding spot.
Eden turned around to run out and help when suddenly Hudson lunged for her, knocking her to the ground. Hudson punched her in the face, making Eden cry out in pain as she tried to toss her friend off of her.
She wanted to throw Hudson off of her but these were her friends, she had to hold back to try and keep them safe even if they were trying to kill her.
Hudson grunted and fell to the side of Eden, face down in the dirt. Eden tried to figure out what happened and looked up to see Pratt with tears in his eyes holding his gun.
"I-I hit her! Oh god, is she dead?!" He panicked and Eden shook her head.
"She's just knocked out, she should wake up any second now." Eden told him and pulled her friend out of view of the main fight.
"I didn't even try, but she didn't stop hitting you and I just-" Pratt rambled and Eden put her hand on his shoulder.
"You did good, keep her safe here until she wakes up, I'm going to end this." She said and Pratt nodded, crouching down to keep an eye on Hudson.
Eden wiped her sleeve across her face and realized Hudson had given her a bloody nose, but it wasn't broken. Eden picked up the gun that Hudson was carrying and ran out from behind the fence.
Pastor Jerome was fighting Grace, well actually she was trying to fight him and he was trying to find a way to snap her out of the Bliss.
"You can fight this, Grace! Don't make me hurt you!" Pastor Jerome threatened but Grace didn't even pause. She lunged for him but he jumped out of the way. Grace tripped and stumbled, giving Pastor Jerome an in to get a hit on her. He hit her on the side of the head and grabbed her arm to pull her behind a large crate.
Sharky and Nick were both trying to hit Jess but she was so quick on her feet that she was throwing both of them for a loop, until Wheaty threw a small rock at her to make her turn around a face him. As she notched an arrow to aim at his head, Sharky kicked her knees out and karate chopped her in the side of the neck. Thankfully it wasn't hard enough to seriously hurt her but it was enough to snap her out of the Bliss.
"You fucking idiot!" She shouted at him and Sharky held up his hands.
"It worked didn't it?" He defended himself and Jess just hopped to her feet and shook her head.
Tammy was wrestling with Tracey Lader, both of them fighting to keep the other down.
Whitehorse and Hurk were going against Mary May, who was doing very well at fending off both of them with a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire.
Sharky and Nick ran over to Tammy and Tracey, trying to snap Tracey out of it while Jess joined Whitehorse and Hurk to help with Mary May.
"You're trying to do good, Eden, but what you're doing is wrong! Look at the pain you're causing around you! You know this isn't right, but you can still end this!" Faith begged from the shadows, using her pleading tones to try and sway Eden's mind.
Eden grit her teeth and focused on helping Whitehorse, Jess, and Hurk. Mary May was so focused on swinging the bat at Jess and Hurk that Eden was able to grab her from behind. Eden wrapped her arm around her neck, not putting her in a headlock but holding her enough for Whitehorse to yank the baseball bat out of her hand.
Hurk knocked Mary May's feet out from under her and Eden followed her to the ground, keeping a tight grip on her friend while she squirmed and screamed to get out of her grip.
Eden tried to focus on keeping her down while Hurk held down her feet and Jess and Whitehorse held down her hands, but it was hard. Eden saw Mary May yesterday morning and she was perfectly fine. Now she was screaming into her ear to let her go while Eden held her down against her will.
Sharky and Nick got Tracey to snap out of it, leaving Mary May to be the last one in the Bliss.
I can apologize after I end this. Eden swore to herself and felt as Mary May stopped squirming as much.
Eden let her go and Mary May coughed, she looked around and everyone stopped holding her down. "What the hell happened?" She demanded, thrusting herself to her feet.
She was Bliss free.
"Those fucking Peggies snatched us that's what happened!" Sharky spit on the ground and Mary May looked furious.
She opened her mouth to say something but got interrupted.
"You have no idea what you're doing! You're killing the world with your greed and your immorality!" Joseph's voice shouted desperately.
"You never wanted peace! You swear that all you do is for these sinners but really it's for you and your pride!" John chimed in.
"You took our land and our family, people that didn't want to leave! You forced them to join you because you think we are strange!" Faith shouted at them.
"You cannot stand in the way of God's plan!" Joseph shouted and more Bliss spewed out into the compound.
"Stay away from the Bliss!" Eden shouted and everyone backed away from the toxic Bliss.
Everyone tried to get away but Bliss surrounded the compound, there was no escaping. Eden stared as the Bliss got closer and closer, then she saw a silhouette in the fog. Eden glanced back at her friends and ran into the Bliss, ignoring the warnings from her friends as she dove in headfirst.
The Bliss instantly hit Eden's nose and went right to her head, making her vision wave and go double. She tried to stay as straight as she could, running only on determination, and fear. Suddenly she ran into something, a person. The force of Eden running into the knocked them to the ground with a loud screech.
A female screech.
Suddenly Eden could see, the Bliss cleared away and revealed that Eden had slammed into Faith. Both of them looked shocked to see the other. Faith thrust her hand out in front of her, knocking Eden back with a force like a jet engine hitting her chest.
Eden looked around and realized that the sky had cleared. Her friends were all standing inside the gate of the compound, all looking dazed and confused from the Bliss. It looked like nothing had happened at the compound, definitely not the fight that just took place. Eden sat up and saw John and Jacob standing in front of the church with a shocked expression on their faces. Joseph stood in front of them, kneeling to help Faith off of the ground.
Eden got up to her feet, staggering and swaying but she forced herself to her feet. Her head pounded from the fight but she wasn't going to let the Seeds know that. Faith got to her feet and stood behind Joseph in her place next to John.
"You were just biding your time this whole time, weren't you?" Eden asked and Joseph's expression never wavered. "I always wondered how you could stay so calm after everything that happened. All of those disagreements, all of that bickering and you acted like everything was going your way because all of this was your plan wasn't it?"
Joseph stepped forward. "I told you long ago, this world is on the brink." He took another step closer to Eden.
"Everyday we bring ourselves closer to destruction, closer to striping our souls of its faith and goodness." Another step.
"I told you to let me bring my flock to the garden in peace, but you couldn't stand it, because sinners will always drag others down with them." Another step.
"Look around you, you're not helping them by solving every problem with a bullet." Joseph was standing at an arms length away from her, his eyes boring into hers. "This world will be cleansed, and you will not be saved, you will burn like all of the other sinners you believe to be your family."
Eden swallowed and straightened her shoulders, trying not to let him get the best of her. "You will never get into my head." She hissed and Joseph looked down at the ground.
He gave his head a small shake and looked back up at Eden. "I will give you one last chance. Turn around, walk away." He wasn't loud but his voice was more commanding than any of the Seed's had ever seen.
For what seemed like hours, all eyes were on Eden. She didn't take her eyes off of Joseph, both of them refusing to back down first.
She could do it. She could walk away. She could take Whitehorse and Hudson and Pratt and leave this county. They didn't deserve the path she was dragging them down, none of them did. Eden could give them what they deserve, relief, a home to go back to, the normal world.
But the thought of leaving the others...it was too much for her to bear.
"I'm not giving up on these people, and I never will." Eden stated, more determined than she'd ever been.
Joseph closed his eyes like he was expecting that answer. "Your pride knows no bounds." He said and shook his head.
He took one step back away from Eden. "Forgive them Father, they know not what they do." He said to the sky and looked back down at Eden.
He turned around and walked out the small metal gate that led to lakeshore. John, Jacob, and Faith stayed in their places, John and Faith had their eyes placed on Joseph but Jacob was staring at Eden.
Joseph walked through the gate and stopped. He spread his arm as if he were preaching and said: "When the Lamb opened the seventh seal... there was silence in Heaven... and the seven angels before God were given seven trumpets. And there were noises," flocks of birds in nearby trees flew over head, "thundering's, lightning's, and a great earthquake..." Joseph turned around and stared at Eden. "And I heard a great voice from the temple say to the angels... go your ways... and pour from the vials, the wrath of God upon the Earth."
A flash of blinding light made Eden lose her balance. The only thing she could see was white light that made her eyes ache even though they were closed. Everything around her was completely covered in the light.
And then the ground shook.
The sudden jolt knocked the wind out of Eden's chest and the light went away. Somewhere in the distance a siren was going off. Like those sirens you hear in war movies.
Eden opened her eyes and saw a mushroom cloud in the distance, in the Whitetail Mountains.
"Eden!" Nick rushed over to Eden's side and grabbed her arm, then he gasped and saw the mushroom cloud billowing into the sky.
Joseph stepped closer to Eden, a terrifying look in his eyes. "It is finished, child." He spoke in a creepy whisper-esq voice.
Eden looked between the lunatic in front of her and the mushroom cloud behind him.
"Oh my God." Pratt murmured. "Oh my God! OH MY GOD!" Her friends were suddenly all standing next to her, all staring in horror at the cloud.
Even more horrifying, Joseph started to sing. "Amazing Grace... how sweet the sound..." Just like in the helicopter when it crashed.
Hudson spoke up. "We gotta get the fuck out of here!" She shouted.
Just as Eden was about to answer her, a wall of wind and debris hit them like a stack of bricks. It knocked Eden off of her feet, along with most of her friends. Eden looked back over the lake in the direction of the wind and saw a cloud of dust coming right for them, it was faster than anything she had ever seen before.
"Everyone run!" Eden shouted and no one spared a second listening to that. Everyone turn on their heels and made a break for the gate of the compound.
Whitehorse looked at Eden. "The truck, we gotta move!" He ordered and Eden listened. She wasn't sure she remembered seeing the truck there when she arrived but she wasn't going to be to picky about their escape.
The only people that weren't terrified were the Seed siblings, clearly Joseph had been preaching to them about this day since the beginning. Now it was finally here.
Jacob and Eden caught each other's eyes for a moment. She saw the way he was looking at her, like she was a deer caught in a bear trap. He looked at her with pity, but he knew there was no stopping this. Eden grabbed Pratt by the arm and pulled him away from where he was standing and watching the cloud take over the entire lake.
"That saved a wretch like me..." God damn it he was still singing.
Eden practically shoved Pratt into the backseat of the truck, not necessarily being gentle about it. Then she jumped into the drivers seat and started the truck, speeding out of the driveway. Everyone else was gone, probably stealing quads or grabbing other trucks to get out on.
The dust cloud hit the truck and engulfed it, taking away most of their visual outside the truck. Flying limbs and boards whizzed past the truck as they pulled out onto the road, going as fast as the truck would go.
"He was right! I knew it he was right!" Pratt cried in the backseat.
"Shut the fuck up! Drive, drive, drive!" Hudson shouted and Eden pressed her foot on the gas even harder.
Eden nearly drifted a turn on the road but got control again, her heart was beating through her whole body, all the way to her fingertips as she drove with little to no visibility. Suddenly, another explosion rocked the truck. The sky was covered in dust or ash or whatever happens after a bomb gets dropped within miles of you, it blocked out the sun, turning the world red as they sped into an escape.
"Jesus Christ, kid! You see this shit? Wherever you are, whatever you're doing, get to the goddamn bunker now!" Dutch's voice was a relief to hear over the radio. Whitehorse grabbed Eden's radio.
"We're on our way!" He spoke into it and Eden gripped the steering wheel tighter. She could probably drive to Dutch's bunker with her eyes closed she'd been there so many times.
Eden glanced in the rearview mirror at the backseat. Hudson was trying to calm Pratt down but it wasn't working. "We're gonna die. We're gonna die. Lord please forgive me, save me from damnation I swear I will always be loyal to you." He screamed as if God would hear him and yank him out of that truck.
"Stop it! He wasn't right, you're not going to die just stop it!" Hudson yelled at him but Pratt just kept praying and crying to God for help.
Eden just stayed focused on the road, swerving to avoid trees and wild animals running into the road. In the distance there was another mushroom cloud, this one was engulfed in flames as it boiled angrily in the sky.
"We're going to burn in Hell for all that we have done! Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb! Jesus! Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death! Amen!" Pratt was shrieking in the back seat, everyone in that truck told him to shut up but he didn't listen.
Eden was shaking from the adrenaline pumping through her veins and the fear that was making it hard to focus on driving. Then she saw the turn to go to Dutch's bunker and she hit the brakes enough to turn the truck down the road before she sped up again.
They flew down the road, the entire truck getting tostled when they hit a bump or a misplaced rock. Pratt was nearly sobbing in the backseat, desperately trying to make it up to God for all that he had done. Hudson had one hand on her door handle and one hand on the back of Whitehorse's seat to try and hold herself in place. And Whitehorse was holding on for dear life while telling Pratt to stop.
The chaos was overwhelming around them but Eden just had to stay focused on driving. She sped around the tight bends on the backroads and missed the trees that were falling. Hudson must have tried to get Pratt to do something because he shouted.
"Get the fuck away from me!" Causing Eden to glance back, then Hudson looked forward and shouted: "Tree!"
The entire truck lurched and Eden's head hit the steering wheel. Then all of the noise and chaos around her just stopped and there was nothing but black.
