Chapter seventeen: Snowball's chance

Play the song when I say.
--------------------------------------
(Y/N) POV
We were sitting in Jack's living room playing truth or dare.
"Ok Toothy, truth or dare?" I asked smirking evilly. She thought for a minute and said,
"Truth." I grinned and asked her,
"Is it true that you still believe in the actual tooth fairy?" She turned a deep shade of scarlet and nodded quietly burying her head in her hands as she tried not to laugh. Naturally she failed considering the fact that Jack was spearheading the effort to make sure my parents hear us laughing and, not that this isn't already well known or anything, I personally haven't been able to ignore how contagious his laugh is. Once the laughter died down an evil grin spread across her face and she turned to Jack.
"Ok Jack, truth or dare?" He grinned and replied,
"Come on you know I love a challenge, dare obviously." Her grin widened and she said,
"I dare you to go get your guitar and play a song for us." I've never seen a smile drop off someone's face faster in my life. Jack's cocky grin turned to a mask of abject horror and he said,
"Can I switch to truth please? I know I said I wanted a challenge but that's just cruel!" Jamie smirked and said,
"You can switch to truth but I'm asking." Jack shot his best friend a 'are you kidding me?!' look before sighing and getting up.
"Fine I'll go, but I haven't played since I started lacrosse so I'm not sure how long it'll take to find it." He said begrudgingly. As he turned to go Jamie turned to me and asked,
"Hey, (Y/N) have you ever heard of the suspension bridge effect? It pretty fascinating, you see-" Jack interjected sounding panicked,
"You know this may go a lot faster if I had some help looking for it, (Y/N) would you mind giving me a hand?" I blinked and nodded, not really understanding why he suddenly looked like some cornered animal and gently lifted Snowflake from my lap. I don't really know why exactly I did what I did next but the looks on everyone's faces were more than worth it. I walked over Jamie and gently placed the cat in his lap. He went completely rigid and stared at the purring fluffball like he was some sort of active time bomb. I booped the fluffy cat's nose and said, "I'll be right back but I want you to stay here with these guys ok sweetie?" He purred in response and I swear I saw Jamie turn even paler than the cat in his lap. With that I turned to Jack and asked, "So where are we looking?" He just pointed upstairs with his thumb and shot Jamie a victorious grin. I nodded briskly and started to walk upstairs as I tried to ignore the fact that I felt myself melt a little when he smiled. Stop thinking about it! It's no big deal, it's just a smile for pity's sake! It wasn't even directed at you, even though you kinda wish it were... Wait! No I don't! I thought frantically as I started to feel a blush spreading across my face. We got to Jack's room and he kinda stood awkwardly outside the closed door.
"Um... Sorry if it's a bit of a mess..... I've been busy with the big game and all so....." He scratched the back of his neck anxiously as an embarrassed blush crawled it's way onto his cheeks. Then, in what I assumed was an attempt to cover said blush he turned around to open the door. Fifteen years and I can't remember the last time he blushed.... Huh. I thought absent-mindedly as I walked into the room. There were a few things scattered about but otherwise the room was immaculate.
"Wow, if this is your version of messy I'd hate to see what this room looks like when it's clean." I said chuckling, he laughed and once again I felt like I was going to melt on the spot. Since when do I react like this to anything?! I thought feeling almost panicked, then to make matters worse the image of me briefly kissing him flashed across my mind and heat filled my face. Luckily he didn't see my blush because he was moving things around in his closet. I heard something fall and winced as he yelled,"Ah! Damn!" I walked over and asked,"You ok in there?" There was a muffled,"Yeah...." Before he came out rubbing his head.
"No luck, I'm not sure where I left the damn thing but it's not in there, I did however find an old trophy I'd thrown in there at some point... Ow...." He held up a little league trophy and I winced.
"Oof, well if nothing else we can mark off somewhere it isn't." I offered helpfully. He shot me a slightly disgruntled look and I elaborated, "In my house we make a mental list of all the places something may be then narrow it down as we go along, process of elimination style." He nodded, still rubbing his head and I frowned.
"Hey... Do-do you want me to get you some ice?" I asked tentatively as I turned to leave. He nodded and mouthed 'yes please' so I walked out and headed downstairs to the kitchen. Once I went back up I heard something shocking: Jack was playing guitar. Now I knew he could and I knew that Tooth and the others liked his playing but damn he was great.
(Play song because I'm lazy)
Once he was done playing my jaw was on the floor. I pulled myself together and pushed the door open. I guess he didn't think anyone heard him playing because he fumbled with his guitar and almost dropped it.
"H-he-hey! (Y/N)! Y-you're back!" He yelled turning a faded pink as he all but threw the guitar behind him. I laughed softly as I walked over to sit on the bed next to him.
"Here's your ice." I said handng him a blue ice pack.
"What..? Oh yeah thanks!" He said hurriedly placing it on his head. I chuckled and leaned forward to reposition it onto the spot he'd been rubbing earlier.
"Ok be honest with me, were you just trying to get me out of the room so you could play?" I asked grinning.
"What?! No!... Ok if I'm being honest yes but I'm not trying to get rid of you or anything." He blurted before blushing lightly and softly adding, "I'd never do that..." Then it was my turn to blush as the words started to sink in. I cleared my throat and changed the subject before we could fall into an uncomfortable silence.
"So was that song about Tooth?" I asked before flinching as a sullen expression made its way onto his face.
"Yeah... You know earlier today she literally told me that you and I were perfect for each other." I stared in shock and horror for a minute before quietly shrieking, "TRACY!" He all but jumped out of his skin as he pressed his hand across my mouth.
"No need to tell the whole neighborhood ok, (L/N)?" He asked sheepishly as he slowly moved away from me. I honestly wasn't sure if I was blushing because of the close proximity or the embarrassment of almost broadcasting his issues to the world.
"S-sorry...." I mumbled looking down at my lap. I heard him draw a breath before responding,
"It's no big deal honestly, both the yelling and the other thing, I don't really mind...." This was one of those moments when your mind needs to sort through the information for it to sink in, then once the sorting is complete promptly stops working. I tried to come up with a response but no matter what I thought of I couldn't get my mouth to work. So when things were finally starting to work again I almost inaudibly murmured, "Oh...o-ok...." At this point if my face were any hotter I'd spontaneously combust but that didn't stop him from saying what he said next.
"You know Jamie and the guys have been dead set on us getting together since like the eighth grade because of something I said one time at a party." I looked up at him as he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly chuckling to himself.
"What did you say?" I asked feeling my curiosity overpowering my embarrassment. Jack shrugged and looked down, his messy white hair flopping in his eyes.
"That I honestly never cared what you thought about me," I scoffed and was prepared to retort but I was taken aback when he raised his earnesty filled azure eyes to meet mine and added, "Just as long as I was in your thoughts." I couldn't think of anything to say. I wracked my brain for some sort of response, frankly anything at all, but it was like the second he made eye contact my brain just went and died. So both of us sat there, on his bed, completely motionless blushing like idiots because of what he'd said. Then, feeling incredibly nervous, I moved close enough to him that our knees were touching, from which I felt something warm and prickly like electricity or pins and needles spread over my entire body, and I very hesitantly pressed my lips against his. Almost immediately he responded by placing a hand against my cheek and around my head to pull me closer to him. The kiss was short and sweet but it said everything that needed to be said. When we pulled away we were both still blushing madly but now he was grinning like an idiot and I could tell I was too. With that I got up and kissed his cheek before turning to walk away. When he didn't move from his spot on the bed I turned to look at him and asked,
"Well snowball? Are we going downstairs so you can finish this dare or not?" He laughed and flipped me off before grabbing the guitar and heading out of the room.
