07. Death And The Maiden

"Hey" Aria said, entering the room Adriana and Damien were staying in.

"Hey" Adriana said.

"Um, I bought you some food, you know since you're human I figured you might be hungry" Aria said, handing Adriana a sandwich, "I didn't know what you like so I just made you my favorite sandwich".

"Thank you" Adriana said, taking the sandwich from Aria, just as she was about to take a bite, she looked to her side, "I don't know!" she yelled.

"Adriana?" Aria said confused, "Who are you talking to?".

"The ghosts" Adriana whispered.

"The ghosts?" Aria asked shocked.

Adriana nodded, "I'm linked to the anchor of the other side, I can see people from this side and the other side".

"Wow" Aria whispered, "Doesn't that drive you crazy?".

"All the time" Adriana replied, looking around, extremely frightened, "Where's Damien?".

"His downstairs, with Damon and Kol, making sure Silas and Amara don't come near you" Aria replied.

"Leave me alone" Adriana whispered.

"Me?" Aria asked confused.

"No" Adriana said quickly, "Not you, I'm sorry, I was talking to them".

"It's okay, you don't have to apologise" Aria assured, "I get it, I don't see ghosts, but I sense them all around me".

"Because of your banshee side" Adriana realised.

Aria nodded, "Are you still a banshee?".

Adriana nodded, "I used to be immortal, banshee and a witch, but now I'm an anchor, banshee and witch".

"Can I ask you something?" Aria asked, Adriana nodded, "I've gotten pretty good in being a vampire and a witch, but the banshee part of me is something I can't control, I don't know how to use it properly, is there a way I can learn?".

"Being a banshee isn't easy Aria, there's no proper way to be a wailing women, you just have to learn and go" Adriana said.

"It's hard" Aria admitted.

"No one ever said it would be easy" Adriana said.

Aria chuckled, "True" she said, "You know, it's kind of weird, looking at you and asking for advice, it's like I'm looking into a mirror".

"I know exactly what you mean" Adriana said, "When I first saw you, I think I nearly passed out".

"Thank god you didn't" Aria said, "Hey, do you want some of my clothes, you can shower and change?".

"I don't really know how to wear the clothes you wear in this era" Adriana admitted, a bit embarrassed.

"That's alright, I can show you" Aria said, "Come on, let's go into my room and get you out of this two thousand year dress".

Adriana gave Aria a small smile, "Thank you".

"Anytime" Aria said, leading Adriana into her and Damon's shared room.

"Alright, you guys ready?" Aria asked.

"We've been ready for the last five minutes, can we please open our eyes now?" Kol asked, getting really impatient.

"Okay, one, two, three" Aria counted, "You can open your eyes now".

Damon, Damien, Kol, Jeremy and April, who had come to the boarding house to spend time with Jeremy, all opened their eyes and looked towards the stairs, where they saw both Aria and Adriana standing.

"Oh my god" April whispered, "This is so weird".

Both Adriana and Aria stood on the stairs, wearing red dresses with their hair tied into a braid, if Aria's baby bump wasn't showing, they wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between them.

"So?" Aria asked Damien, "How does your soulmate look?".

Damien looked at Adriana and smiled, "Stunning".

Aria smiled, while Adriana blushed, Aria then turned to Damon, "Anything you would like to say Mr. Salvatore?".

Damon chuckled, "You look beautiful Ria".

"Thank you" Aria said, walking down the stairs with Adriana.

"Chocolate?" Kol asked, handing Aria a chocolate.

Aria took the chocolate, and as much as she wanted to eat it, she turned around and handed it to Adriana, "Here".

"What's this?" Adriana asked confused.

"The best thing to happen to this world" April replied.

"She's absolutely right" Aria agreed, "This is chocolate, try it".

Adriana nodded, she bit into the chocolate, "So?" April asked eagerly.

"It's really delicious" Adriana replied.

"Told you" Aria said.

"Ri, where's Caroline and Rebekah?" Kol asked suddenly, "I thought they were supposed to come".

"They were, but they got held up by Wes, they're trying to compel him to forget about us being vampires" Aria informed.

"Bonnie Bennett?" Adriana said suddenly, shocking everyone.

"What did you just say?" Kol asked confused.

"Bonnie's here" Jeremy replied, seeing the ghost of his ex-girlfriend.

"You can see Bonnie?" Aria asked shocked.

"This is the first time I've seen her since she died" Jeremy replied, "Wait Adriana, you can see her?".

Adriana nodded, "I wasn't sure if she was real or not, sometimes it's hard telling the difference between the living or dead, but she started talking to me".

"You can see people on the other side?" Kol asked shocked.

"She's linked to the anchor to the other side, she can see everything" Damien revealed.

Bonnie, who was still there, stepped forward and touched Adriana's shoulder, causing her to flinch.

"Don't touch me!" Adriana yelled, hiding behind Damien.

"What just happened?" Aria asked confused.

"Bonnie just touched her" Jeremy replied.

"Hey witch!" Kol yelled, "I don't know where you are, but we'd all appericate if you don't touch the already frightened doppelganger!".

"I just wanted to see if I could touch her" Bonnie defended.

"You need to leave" Jeremy told Bonnie.

"I'm sorry" Bonnie apologised, "I didn't mean to--".

"Bonnie, go" Jeremy snapped.

Bonnie sighed, after a moment, she disappeared.

"Is she gone?" Damien asked Jeremy, who nodded.

"Are you okay?" Aria asked Adriana.

"I don't like it when people touch me" Adriana whispered, still holding on to Damien.

"Except Damien?" Damon asked.

"His my soulmate" Adriana whispered, making Damien smile.

Before anyone could say anything, Adriana left out a scream and fell to the floor in pain.

"Ahh!" Adriana yelled in pain.

"Adriana!" Damien yelled, holding Adriana.

"Damien, it hurts!" Adriana cried.

"What's happening to her?" Damon asked confused.

"I don't know" Damien replied, really worried.

After a moment, Adriana had stopped screaming in pain, but she was still on the floor, exhausted.

"Adriana" Damien said, "What just happened?".

"A supernatural being just died" Adriana whispered, "Whenever a supernatural being dies, they pass through the anchor, which in turn also effects me, I can't take it anymore Damien, please make it stop, it's too much, please just end it".

"Take her up to the room" Damon told Damien.

Damien nodded, he picked Adriana up in his arm and took her up to their shared room.

"You've been awfully quiet" Damon told Aria, sitting next to her infront of the fireplace.

"I'm thinking" Aria said.

"About what?" Damon asked confused.

"It's not fair, Adriana did nothing bad, but she's still suffering because of Silas and Amara" Aria replied, "Damon, Adriana and Amara are linked because of the other side, right?".

"Right" Damon said.

"What if we change the anchor to the other side?" Aria asked, "Wouldn't that break the link between Amara and Adriana?".

"If we change the anchor, we would also need someone or something to link the anchor to" Damon reminded.

"Not entirely" Aria said, "I think if we talk to Qetsiyah, she can figure out a way to change the anchor, without linking it to anyone".

"Alright, let's say we change the anchor, who will it be?" Damon asked.

"Someone dead" Aria replied.

"Ric?" Damon asked shocked, "Finn?".

Aria shook her head in denial, "No Damon, you saw how much pain Adriana was in, I refuse to put Ric and Finn through that everytime a supernatural being dies".

"Then who else Ria?" Damon asked.

"Someone who deserves it, someone who is on the other side because of her actions" Aria replied.

"No, Ria" Damon said, realising who Aria was talking about.

"Damon, think about it, after everything Bonnie did, why does she get a peaceful death?" Aria asked, "And despite not doing anything bad, why does Adriana have to suffer so much?".

Damon sighed, "You're not going to let this go, are you?".

"It's not fair, Damon" Aria replied, "Damien and Adriana deserve a life without all this pain, they deserve to live their human life without any pain or death, they've earned it after being separated for two thousand years, and plus it's not like we're bring Bonnie back without any consequences, everytime a supernatural being dies, she will feel their death, imagine the various ways supernatural being die, imagine how frequently they die".

Damon let Aria's words sink in, as he was thinking, both Aria and Damon heard a painful yell, Adriana was in pain, again.

"Fine" Damon said, Adriana's screams managing to convince him, "Let's do this".

Damon and Kol knocked on Qetsiyah's door.

"We were hoping we could talk" Damon told Qetsiyah when she opened the door.

"And I was hoping you were my Chinese food, goodbye" Qetsiyah said, trying to close the door, but Kol kicked it open.

"Your best friend's back" Kol informed.

"What?" Qetsiyah asked shocked, not sure if she heard Kol correctly.

"Adriana? Burnette, brown eyes, looks exactly like Aria, Damien's soulmate" Kol listed.

"What about her?" Qetsiyah asked, "Is she okay?".

"Not really" Kol replied.

"Is she alive?" Qetsiyah asked worried.

"She is" Damon assured, "But she's in a lot of pain, and since you clearly care for her, how would you feel about us making a deal?".

"Here's our pitch, Adriana is in pain because everytime a supernatural being dies, they have to pass through the anchor, meaning Amara, which means she feels their death, and due to Adriana's connection to Amara, Adriana feels their death to, which is driving her insane" Kol explained.

"You obviously needed something powerful to anchor the other side, like Amara and Adriana" Damon said, "But since Adriana drank some of Damien's blood, she turned human along with Amara, so to stop Adriana from feeling anymore pain, would you consider changing the anchor to someone who's dead but stuck on the other side a viable candidate?".

"An anchor swap?" Qetsiyah asked.

"If you do that, it might also break the link between Adriana and Amara" Kol replied.

"I would love nothing more then to end Adriana's suffering but I don't have anything to link the anchor to" Qetsiyah said.

"But you don't need to link it to anything, Bonnie's already dead" Kol said.

"Fine, but that still doesn't change the fact that I need a massive amount of power to do a transfer spell like that" Qetsiyah said.

"Fine, name your poison" Damon said.

"I need something to draw on" Qetsiyah said, "Moon's not full, I don't think there's a worthy comet for a couple billion years".

"How about doppelganger blood?" Kol asked, "We have three sets of doppelgangers, surely they should be enough, they're powerful, mystical, naturally recurring".

"You're right" Qetsiyah said, "But I don't need Damien or Damon's blood, I need the blood of the Petrova and Connor doppelgangers".

"Deal" Damon said simply.

Qetsiyah entered the Boarding House with Damon and Kol, and immediately, she saw her best friend, her soul sister, sitting in the living room.

"Adri" Qetsiyah whispered.

"Tessa" Adriana whispered, a huge smile on her face.

"I'm so sorry" Qetsiyah cried, hugging Adriana, "I'm sorry I didn't wake you up sooner, but I knew once you wake up you would feel the pain of dead supernatural beings, I wanted to break the link between you and Amara first".

"It's okay" Adriana cried, "I understand".

"I missed you" Qetsiyah sobbed.

"I missed you too" Adriana said.

Qetsiyah broke the hug, and wiped Adriana's tears, "I will fix this, okay? I promise".

"I trust you" Adriana assured.

"We brought them" Jeremy informed, entering the boarding house with April, Elena, Amara and Katherine behind them.

Adriana suddenly stumbled back into Damien's arms, seeing so many versions of Amara didn't sit well with her.

"It's okay" Damien whispered into Adriana's ear, "You're okay".

Adriana looked at Damien then at Qetsiyah, who was giving her a encouraging smile, "This is going to work, right?".

"It will" Qetsiyah promised.

Adriana, Aria, Amara, Katherine and Elena stood around the table.

"What is that?" Amara asked, as Qetsiyah placed a grimoire in the middle of the table.

"It's Bonnie's grimoire" Elena replied.

Adriana turned to Aria, "What's a grimoire?" she whispered.

"It's a book where witches record all their magical spells" Aria replied.

"Idiot" Katherine taunted.

Aria glared at Katherine, "You are no longer a vampire Katherine, it won't take me even a second to end you, so stand there quietly, or I will rip your heart out and feed it to you".

"You sound like Damon" Katherine said.

"Thank you" Aria said, "I take that as a compliment".

"Since Bonnie can't be here her grimoire will have to do, hands in palms up" Qetsiyah ordered.

Adriana and Aria lifted their palms up and Qetsiyah very gently made a cut on their palms, when it came to the Petrova doppelgangers, Qetsiyah was anything but gentle, making both Adriana and Aria laugh.

The five doppelgangers let their blood fall on to Bonnie's grimoire, and Qetsiyah started chanting, the flames on all the candles getting higher, suddenly some of the candles blew out.

"No" Qetsiyah said.

"Is it done?" Katherine asked.

"No, it's not done" Qetsiyah snapped, as the wind picked up, and the lights around them bursted.

"What's happening?" Adriana asked, terrified.

"Silas is happening" Qetsiyah replied, "Show yourself, bastard!".

Suddenly, all the lights were shut off.

"I can't see anything, can you?" Katherine asked.

"Electricity's out in the whole house, what happened?" Damon asked, entering the room with Damien.

"Silas is here" Aria replied.

"Where's Adriana?" Damien asked, suddenly worried as Adriana was no longer in the room.

"And where's crazy pants?" Damon asked, realising Amara was also missing.

"Even Qetsiyah's missing" Aria realised.

"I need to find Adriana" Damien said, running out the room.

Aria entered the living room, a torch in her hand, Kol and Damon having gone to find Adriana, Amara, Silas and Damien.

Entering the living room, Aria was shocked seeing Qetsiyah with a poker in her shoulder, Aria quickly ran over to the witch, "This is going to hurt, okay?" Aria said, pulling the poker out before Qetsiyah could say anything.

"Ahh!" Qetsiyah yelled in pain.

Aria bit into her wrist and offered it to Qetsiyah, "Drink, it will heal you".

Qetsiyah nodded, she drank Aria's blood, and slowly stood up, "I have to finish the spell".

"You're weak Qetsiyah" Aria said, supporting the witch.

"I can't stop, not now, I'm close Aria, I can end it" Qetsiyah said.

Aria sighed, "Fine, you finish the spell, I'll go make sure Adriana and Damien are okay".

Qetsiyah nodded and both the witches separated, both on a separated mission on their mind.

"Adrian!" Silas yelled, running over to a frightened Adriana, who was tied to a tree by Stefan, who had gotten his memories back and now wanted revenge on Silas for trapping him in a safe for the whole summer.

"No!" Adriana cried, as Silas untied her, she tried to get away from Silas, but he refuse to let her go, "Please, don't touch me, don't touch me!".

"Adriana, please" Silas pleaded, "I love you".

"No!", Adriana let out a banshee scream, pushing Silas away from her and onto the floor.

"Adriana!" Damien yelled, running over to the terrified banshee.

"I can't do this anymore Damien" Adriana cried, "I can't--I--".

"Shh" Damien said, hugging Adriana, "It's okay, I have you".

"We shouldn't be alive Damien" Adriana sobbed, "We shouldn't be here".

"I know" Damien whispered, "I know".

"I love you, I always will" Adriana said, "But you need to end this Damien".

"I can't" Damien sobbed, "I can't do that again".

"This time it will be different" Adriana promised, "You and I will reunite, we will be in peace together, please Damien, I can't do this anymore, we've outlived everyone, look around us, this isn't our world, I am so terrified of this world, and I don't want to be terrified anymore, please".

"Promise me, we will see each other again" Damien said, "Promise me Adriana, otherwise I can't do this".

Adriana placed a kiss on Damien's lips, "I promise, we will see each other".

Adriana placed a large, sharp branch in Damien's hand, "Please" she pleaded.

Damien took the branch, he looked at Adriana then at the branch, and just as he was about to stab her, he yelled in pain as a knife wound started appearing on his chest and he fell to the ground.

"Damien!" Adriana yelled, kneeling beside her lover, she turned to Silas, and realised in her and Damien's moment, they didn't realise that Silas and Stefan were having a fight, in the fight Stefan ended up stabbing Silas, killing not only him but also Damien.

Adriana looked at the dead Damien, she wiped her tears and stood up, she walked over to Silas's dead body, taking the knife, she walked back to Damien.

"I will see you very soon, my love" Adriana whispered, closing her eyes, then stabbing herself with the knife and falling on top of Damien, killing not only herself but also Amara, as it turns out, changing the anchor didn't break the link between the two.

"Oh my god" Aria whispered, as her and Damon ran over to Damien, Adriana and Silas's dead bodies, Aria quickly turned around and hugged Damon, not being able to see the dead bodies, "They're dead" she whispered, "Damien and Adriana are dead".

Damon hugged Aria back, and looked at the couple, he noticed that their hands were intertwined, causing a small smile to form on his face, "They're together Ria, they're finally together".

"Guys" Kol said, walking over to the couple, equally as shocked seeing Damien and Adriana dead, "Jeremy and April found Amara's dead body, turns out changing the anchor didn't break the link between the two, and when they returned home, Qetsiyah was dead to, they think she realised Damien and Adriana were dead, so she killed herself after realising she succeeded in reuniting them, unfortunately she ended up completely the spell, meaning Bonnie's back but without any magic, she's back as the anchor of the other side".

"We need to bury them" Aria whispered, tears falling down her face, "They deserve a proper burial, all three of them".

"We will" Damon assured, kissing Aria's head.

Unknown to Damon and Aria, Damien and Adriana were on the other side, watching Damon and Aria.

"We owe them" Adriana said, "Because of them we get to have our happy ending".

"I know, I will always be grateful to those two" Damien said, he turned to Adriana, "You ready?".

"Ready for eternity with you?" Adriana asked, lacing her fingers with Damien's, "Of course I'm ready".

Damien and Adriana stood there, their hands laced together, as a bright white light shinned on them, they turned to each with huge smiles on their faces, realising after two thousand years later, they were finally at peace with each other.

Aria, Rebekah and Caroline walked over to the three graves, turns out despite everyone dying around her, there was still some space in the Connor plot, for three more graves, which is why they buried Damien, Adriana and Qetsiyah here, while Silas and Amara were buried somewhere far away.

Aria placed white roses on each of the headstones, "I hope wherever you guys are, you are happy and together, I hope Damien and Adriana have finally gotten peace together, and I really hope Qetsiyah is with her sister", Aria glanced Rebekah and Caroline, "Because I can't think of a worst thing then not reuniting with my sisters after my death".

Caroline and Rebekah hugged Aria, "They're together right?" Aria asked, staring at Damien and Adriana's grave.

"Of course they are" Caroline replied.

"And they have you to thank for that" Rebekah said.

"I didn't do anything" Aria said.

"They reunited because of you Aria" Caroline said.

"No Care, their love brought them back to each other, not me" Aria whispered.
