Zion's POV
"Okay!" Eva shouts from her grand staircase and into the living room. "Your attention, please. Our first official meeting at the Drake-Robinson Headquarters has formally begun!"
We all cheer as she walks into the room with her phone in hand. Aisha, Kaya, Liv, Jai, Tory, Sam, and I sit in Eva's living room making posters, cutting out stickers, and designing campaign posts.
Liv has a new Instagram for the campaign, a Canva premium subscription, and a dream. I'll leave her to the artsy stuff and stick to cutting stickers.
"We have a lot to discuss," Eva keeps us on track. "First, I'd like to welcome Sam to our group." The LaRusso girl smiles excitedly. "I'd also like to welcome Zion back after a week's hiatus."
"I'm sorry again for shutting all of you out," I say as I look at the non-karate people.
"Which brings us to the second thing on my list," Eva nods. "Kaya?"
"Yeah," Kaya sets down her laptop, "so I've been taking some anonymous polls throughout the week to gauge how the people will be voting. We all know most are in favor of Ito-Johnson, but the question is: Why?"
"Who exactly are you interviewing for this?" Tory wonders.
Kaya smirks, "They're anonymous." Tory looks at Kaya knowingly. She sighs, "And mainly underclassmen. But they're still voters."
"True," Liv nods. "Their vote matters just as much."
"But what do the people in our grade think?" Tory questions more.
"The girls are very in favor of Eva, especially those in extracurriculars," Kaya says.
"And the boys?" I wonder.
"I've been... honestly, a bit too nervous to ask," she says.
"I can go with you next time," Sam speaks up. "I'm not afraid of them. If they have something to say, they can say it to my face."
"Okay," Kaya nods with a small smile, "thanks."
"Great, so the point?" Eva gently urges Kaya to continue.
"The point is that these numbers show they would be more in favor of Eva had Zion not separated from the campaign right after the speeches were given," Kaya explains.
"What?" I ask. "Why?"
"Some people said they thought it showed weakness or admission of guilt. Others thought it looked like Eva shunned you for your bad rep. True friends stick together, so it said a lot about Eva's character when you disappeared," Kaya says bluntly.
I look down in dismay. I tried avoiding them to keep her numbers from falling more, but somehow I still made it worse?
"It's okay," Eva speaks up, "because we have a plan."
"We're gonna reintroduce you to the group," Aisha states. She gestures around the room, "The entire group. We'll show we're stronger together."
"But won't the rumors still be going around?" Tory wonders as I nod in agreement and continue cutting these stickers in perfect circles while listening to the plan. "Won't those also impact you?"
"Right," Eva responds to Tory, "and Simon was given his choice to be honest and 'print a retraction.' But he didn't. So I'm going to get back at that asshole - with Zion."
"What?" I look up from my scissors, feeling completely out of the loop. I see Liv smiling beside me at my cluelessness.
"We'll talk, okay?" Eva nods to me. She turns back to everyone, "Stickers and posters will only do so much, but they will help. We'll give these out on Monday and keep going until we run out. And Aisha already got Counselor Blatt to approve us hanging them up. Speaking of, Liv?"
"Yeah," Liv sits back from her Canva project and addresses us, "hi. Ms. Hale said she's willing to let us meet in her classroom anytime it's empty. So if we have any emergency meetings to hold or just need a second from the chaos, she's a safe space for our campaign. She's also ready to go to admin for us if anything gets more out of hand."
I smile, "That's really nice of her."
"She's the best," Jai agrees as they work on their poster for the campaign.
"And lastly, me," Aisha says. "My stuff is later in the week, primarily at the Halloween Dance itself. I'm in charge of last-minute campaigning, behind-the-scenes boring stuff, and coordinating with Counselor Blatt on anything else we need, which is... Well, we have a love-hate relationship."
I think back on Aisha's experience with Yasmine and frown. I see Sam is, too.
"But she's good right now. She's pushing for us, which is nice. I know Jake got the male coaches to basically endorse him and Simon, so every little bit helps," Aisha continues. "I guess I can also work on getting more faculty involved."
"That's great, Aisha," Sam says.
"This is all great," Tory nods as she grabs her scissors again.
I set mine down when Eva turns to me, "Okay, Zion, come with me."
We walk upstairs to her room; I can feel Eva's adrenaline from here. Is it excitement? Anger? I can't tell.
"So Monday," she sits on her bed.
"Monday," I nod, trying to get on the same page as her.
"Monday is our chance to redeem you and humiliate Simon - in a civil though not entirely altruistic way," Eva grins evilly.
I try to smile, too, but hesitate for a moment. "I'm sorry to ask because I'm sure I should know this-"
"Oh! 'Altruistic?' It's from SAT prep, sorry. It means selfless, generous, benevolent," she explains in a way that doesn't make me feel dumb. "Which is not exactly what we will be on Monday because, yes, there are selfish aspects of this campaign. I'm not going to ignore that or downplay that fact like he has."
"Okay," I nod, realizing that I was right. She's both excited and angry. "So what's the plan?"
⭒⭒⭒
I picked up Robby from Johnny's on my way back from Eva's to fill him in on everything.
It was a really fun day with them, and we got a lot done. Tory even got Piper to FaceTime in for a half an hour or so; its clear we've all missed her. She's currently touring Princeton, so Sam asked a lot of questions.
It's cool to learn more about Eva and how a campaign operates while staying true to her moral compass. This is exactly what I said at Miyagi-Do; we will take the high road and fight back.
"So I have something to run by you," I say as I sit Robby down on the couch.
"What is it?" he asks.
"On Monday, I'm going to address the school at lunch," I explain. "It was Eva's idea, but I'm coming up with a plan of what to say. And I want to mention my sexuality a bit, which kind of implies our and my past... well, you know." He nods, understanding the innuendo. "I want to own my choices and my body, and I don't really need your permission, but I do?"
I try to explain it better nervously and find myself rambling fast so he can't respond too soon.
"Over the summer, you pointed out that I haven't really taken into account your boundaries, and I'm sorry for that. So this is me putting it all in front of you beforehand. I want to clear up the confusion and take what those rumors are saying and reclaim them, in a sense. But the idea of this a lot, so if you aren't comfortable with me mentioning you or us, tell me. Please. Because I do care about you. I mean, I'm going to do this speech regardless, but I can modify-"
Robby interrupts me, "You can stop talking now." I press my lips together in embarrassment. "How vulgar were you thinking?"
"Vulgar?" I repeat in surprise. "Not at all."
"Well," he cracks a small smile, "I appreciate you asking. I have no problem with it."
"Really?" I ask.
"Really. If you and Eva think this is the best course of action, then I'll be there to support you."
"Really?" I can't help asking again.
"Really," he laughs.
I smile excitedly, "Yay. She really thinks this can change everything since I've been so silently publicly. Until now. I appreciate your support."
"Always," he nods.
I grin mischeviously, "Can I show you how much I appreciate you?"
Robby nods as I lean in and kiss him.
Then I stand up and guide him to my room. The door shuts behind us.

Images flash through my mind of Valley Fest with Eva, Liv, and Jai.
Running to the petting zoos.
Hiding from Cobra Kai.
Getting ready to go onstage.
Walking onstage in front of a massive crowd.
My friends in the audience cheering us on.
Even being strong enough to stand up Silver's Cobra Kai.
Together.
United.

I sit up in bed as the idea hits me. I try not to disturb Robby as I reach for my phone.
I redownload Instagram. Then I schedule a text to the expanded group chat that now includes Sam. It includes the picture all of us took at Eva's yesterday afternoon.
I realize that sending this at 3am is crazy, so I schedule it to send at 9am.
Zion to feminicons hq: image
Zion to feminicons hq: I think we should each post this photo before Monday as a statement
Then I open the Instagram app, log back in, and unarchive my Valley Fest post. I update my profile picture and bio, too. I ignore any comments, turn off notifications, then close out of it. I won't let them get to me.
Then I set my phone down again and turn to Robby. He sleeps so peacefully, like an angel.
I roll back into bed and hold him happily.
After a moment I feel him pull me in tighter and hum in his sleep.
I try not to giggle - or melt - at that as I adjust the blanket and try to fall asleep once again.

Third Person POV
"'Sup?" Miguel greets the Miyagi-Do guys as he walks over from security with Robby on Monday morning.
The other guys greet them back.
"So where's Sam and Zion?" Demetri asks, used to them walking in together.
"Ruining more things?" Hawk mutters under his breath. Thankfully, nobody hears it.
"They're still in the parking lot with the others," Miguel nods.
"'With the others?'" Chris repeats.
"There they are," Robby looks toward the front doors.
⭒⭒⭒
Zion's POV
Our entire group emerges from security, and we join together as one big group.
I stand beside Eva in public now, with our group photos being posted just last night.
And I can feel the eyes on us.
It doesn't get any less weird but it does become more manageable.
I can see Simon's scowl as he stands with the rest of his nominated friends.
And we walk together down the hall as every now and then someone breaks off for class. Nothing even needs to be said; we can feel the power.
When I stop at English class, I turn to Eva and whisper, "See you at lunch." She grins excitedly.
⭒⭒⭒
I don't know why I'm nervous when lunchtime comes.
The speech is great. It's memorized. It should be just what we need.
Now if only my nerves won't get in the way.
Today, we all sit together. All of us. It's always instinctual for me to hide and do things on my own. I won't do that this time. I rely on my friends, and they rely on me. This is how we'll win. I've even heard people crediting Eva with getting Sam and Tory to get along, which isn't entirely true but does help.
"Hey, Walker, catch!" I hear one of the basketball guys yell as they throw a wad of tinfoil over to him.
I look past Walker to Jake and Simon. I get mad again as I think about what they said to me. And everyone at this table by now knows what they said, too.
I'm also pissed about something that happened earlier. Some guy I've never met made an off-handed comment, which normally wouldn't bother me, but it's what he said: "Does your daddy know you dress like that?" It just made me sad because my dad would have been the most supportive of this based on how he stood up for me with the bullies in middle school. It makes me miss him.
And it also infuriates me.
I turn to Eva - the only one aside from Robby who knows this plan - and she nods to me encouragingly. I see Aisha notice the interaction and raise an eyebrow in confusion.
Before she can wonder any longer, I'm standing and stepping onto the table to look out at the entire lunch room. I try to resist the anxiety that hits me as I do.
Some people stop talking and look up at me.
"If I could have your attention, please," I speak out loud and clear.
Now they all stare. I've got this.
"You know me. I'm Zion Ambrose," I say. I find myself a lot less nervous than I was at Valley Fest. "And if you don't know me, I know you've heard the lies that have been spread about me to hurt Eva Drake in her campaign for president. These lies were started by her opponent, Simon. Today I'm here to set the record straight."
I look down as Miyagi-Do stares up at me. I look back out at the upperclassmen of West Valley High; I already see people with their phones out like Eva predicted. I continue.
"First of all, no, I did not cheat on Hawk, despite the rumors. I also did not steal anyone's boyfriend. Ask any one of us."
I see Tory nodding in my peripheral vision. I can feel my friends' support.
"Second of all, yes, I did beat up Walker in a karate dojo after a solid year of harrassment and lies spread about me. These lies continue even now."
I take a moment as I glance over at him as he stands with Simon and the basketball players.
"So, yes, I did hurt him. And I don't think that women should have to apologize for being mad at the men who assault and harrass them, which is exactly what Walker did. And if you defend that kind of behavior like Simon..."
I slightly gesture to him when I say this. I see people actually turn to look at him.
"...then not only are you misogynistic but you're part of the problem. Most of the things you know about me are lies because of Simon, Jake, and Walker. These are the people who will represent you. Us."
I turn back to where the feminicons sit. They give me nods of reassurance.
"Which is why I urge you to vote for Eva Drake. She'd be a great partner for this school. Her goal as president is to end intolerance and stand up for those who are bullied, harrassed, and oppressed."
I look out to what must be half of our school and find a smile creep onto my face as I add my conclusion:
"And if there's one thing I know, it's a great partner."
I can feel the surprise in the cafeteria when I say this. It hits like a surge of power when I do. I just did that.
Then I hear some people clap, and I smile even wider. I notice Simon, Walker, and Jake all have seemingly frozen in place. Then I hear especially loud claps from below me where my friends sit.
I get off the table, hoping that really worked. Regardless, I'm sure it will be shared everywhere.
"Oh my God!" Liv exclaims happily.
"Hell yeah, you just did that," Tory says in surprise. I laugh as I try to not freak out from saying all of that so publicly.
"So that's what you two were planning in secret?" Aisha puts it together.
"Guilty," Eva nods. Then she turns to me, "I couldn't have done it better myself. That was perfect. Thank you."
"Thank you for your help and support," I tell her.
"Okay, wow," Kaya laughs, "you are such a badass, what the fuck?"
I smile brightly and sit down to join everyone at the table now.
"You really should go into public speaking," Sam states.
I shake my head, "Please be joking."
She smiles hesitantly, "Kind of?"
"What did you think?" I turn to Robby - and by proximity, the entire Miyagi-Do side of the table.
"I'm so proud of you," Robby says.
"I'm sorry," Demetri speaks up, "but are we all just going to ignore the last part of the speech?" I see Chris and Mitch nod in agreement.
I bite my lip nervously, "What about it?"
"What about- Okay," he sighs. He asks a genuine question, "Don't take this the wrong way, but how is that supposed to get Eva a win?"
"Sometimes you have to lean into the drama," Jai says from the other end of the table.
"And saying that will help get votes?" Miguel asks, a bit confused, too.
"Everything being said was so negative," I remind them. "I don't have to convince them that I'm not a slut, just that it isn't a bad thing."
And as if on cue, the bell rings and leaves the Miyagi-Do side of the table stunned in silence.
And Hawk is the first to get up and walk away.
"Ignore him," Tory says from behind me. "This was a huge win. Look."
My jaw drops slightly when I see Jake and Simon walking by quickly just as the bell rings. Now they're the ones fleeing.
Then I see Walker headed after them as he gets a ton of dirty looks from girls and boys alike.
And then I see Rickenberger walking with the rest of the basketball team. He sees me and gives me a thumbs up. I mouth a "thank you" to him.
"What losers," Jai comments.
"Yeah, some people just can't handle bad press," Sam remarks.
At that, we fist bump. It's almost like a dream, but we're not to the end quite yet.
I try to slip back into reality and turn to Robby, "I guess we should get to class."
"Okay," he nods and grabs his stuff.
"Wait," I say before we walk away.
I wrap my arm behind his neck and pull him in for a deep yet gentle kiss.
We pull back, and he smiles with a slightly flushed face, "What was that for?"
"For standing by me," I say softly. "And it felt natural and safe now, I guess, to do it in public."
"We can do it again," he flirts.
I play coy, "We have to get to class."
He rolls eyes as I lead us through the masses; I feel lighter than air now.
⭒⭒⭒
"Have a good afternoon. See you tomorrow," Ms. Hale dismisses us.
Each of us grab our things. Some students leave faster than us.
"Eva, wait," Simon approaches our group.
"What is it, Simon?" she questions with her guard up.
"Can we talk? Alone?" I notice him looking at me wearily.
"Yeah," she tries to play it cool and walks over to the guy she somehow dated at one point. Of course he was too scared to really commit. She dodged a bullet.
Jai, Liv, and I pretend not to listen as they talk.
"Look, I didn't realize Walker was telling me lies," he says to our surprise.
"Oh, really?" Eva asks.
"Yeah, really," he nods. "I took him at face value, which I know now was a misstep."
"I'm glad you do," she tells him.
"So can we call it even now?"
"What?" she asks on behalf of all of us.
"Will you stop attacking me?"
"Wait, you started this war," she states. "You didn't have to bring Zion into it at all."
"Don't you think she did that to herself?" Simon asks with a knowing tone.
I can hear Eva's anger, "No, you imbecile!"
"Look, you got even with her little speech today, right?"
"I was thinking maybe now you would publicly admit you were wrong or drop out of the race," Eva admits.
He scoffs, "Yeah, right. I need this for my Yale application. Early action goes out soon."
"You're despicable," she tells him.
"If I recall, you were interested at one point," he smirks. I hate him.
"Until I realized how much of a prick you really are. You thought I got even today? We're just getting started," Eva states.
His eyes widen, "Okay, Eva, look I messed up. I should have fact-checked my source, but can't we end this amicably?"
Eva stands up straighter, "No, this won't end amicably. This is exactly why I'm the projected valedictorian and not you. I actually have common sense and can think critically. I'll see you at the Halloween dance - when I'm elected."
She turns away and walks back over to us for her stuff. I stare in surprise with a bit of pride at Eva's bold comeback.
"Wow, you told him off!" Jai basically congratulates her.
"Well, I learned from the best," Eva turns to me. We walk out and down the hall. She squeals excitedly, "That's the best thing I think I have ever done. I never thought I'd be able to stand up to him again after our weird situationship. Thank you, Zion."
"That was all you," I tell her. "But I'm so proud of you for doing it."
"This just in," Kaya finds us in the hallways. "Your numbers are rising. You've had a 25% increase in the past twenty-four hours."
"That's insane," I say.
"Yeah it is! We are going to win this thing!" Liv cheers then we all join.

"Remember: You get hit, you're out. Fight!"
I go after Aisha first in this new sparring style we've never tried before. It's a four on four that Johnny did at a tournament in the 80s.
Aisha is really fast with her offense, and I find myself relying on my defense as I fight her.
"Point, Penis Breath. Anthony, out."
I internally groan where I hear that Anthony is already out. 3 versus 4.
I counter everything Aisha throws at me for however long until I switch it up and sneak in an offensive move of my own.
Aisha's defense is much weaker than her offense, I realize, and take advantage of it.
"Point, Ambrose. Robinson, out." 3 versus 3.
"Damnit," I hear her mutter as she steps off of the sparring deck.
"A little help," I hear Devon call out.
I turn and see my fellow teammate being taken on by Hawk and Mitch as Miguel fights Kenny.
"I've got it," I tell Miguel and rush over to the trio.
I grab Mitch's shoulder and punch then counterpunch. It catches him off-guard.
"Point, Diaz. Payne, out." 3 versus 2. "Point, Moskowitz. Lee, out." 2 versus 2.
I do my best to not let the calls distract me as I continue a complex combination that confuses Mitch. Then I knee him in the chest.
"Point, Ambrose. Penis Breath, out," Johnny calls. 2 versus 1.
Once Mitch is gone, I turn around and find Eli fighting Miguel. I try to assess how to help because they look evenly matched.
I decide to stand parallel to Miguel so it's clear we're fighting Eli together. I try to put aside how angry I am at him for this exercise.
Suddenly, Eli is coming at me. For some reason. I guess he won't be doing the same.
I block and defend as he tries different kicks I've never seen him do before to try to catch me off-guard.
Suddenly, Miguel sweeps his feet, and he falls. I stand on-guard as Miguel follows him down, but Eli fights back and finds his footing again.
Eli lunges at me, and Miguel blocks him. I think I hear him say to Eli, "What are you doing?"
It doesn't matter, though, because I do what I can to use my defense to bring the fight back to the center of the platform. Falling off would hurt someone, I'm sure.
Eli doesn't share this idea, though. So I become offensive and find his defense is also very strong.
The fight moves backwards, and suddenly Miguel and I have the right formation to tag-team him. I hear cheering for each side as we do so.
Miguel and I make eye contact and every now and then call to each other.
And somehow in all of this, Eli goes for me again. Miguel steps in front and grabs his fist to block it, then Eli goes for a cross punch. My eyes widen.
"Point, Moskowitz. Diaz, out."
1 versus 1.
And suddenly he's coming at me again. I counter. I block. And then I get both of our arms into a lock. He flips out of it.
I try to find a weakness in his stance to land a point on his torso.
Then I have it; as usual, it's his upper body that's left vulnerable. I let him come at me again. When he does, I grab his shoulder and spin him. He leans back to shove me off and then exposes his chest.
I twist around and knee him in the torso.
Then it's called. "Point, Ambrose. Winners!"
I smile excitedly as Devon, Miguel, and Anthony rush back onto the platform and cheer excitedly.
I frown a little when I see Eli walk off the platform almost angrily. Why is he being a sore loser? I should be mad that he's the one avoiding me.
"Nice work today, team," Johnny says. "Go home and shower. Some of you stink."
"Not us. We won!" Miguel cheers and wraps his arm around my shoulder.
I laugh and push him off, "Well, you may still stink."
"Oh," he says with an apologetic smile, "sorry."
"I'm never on the winning team!" Anthony speaks up. "That was really fun, even if I did get out quickly."
"I saw you with Mitch. You held your own pretty well," Miguel encourages.
"It's true," Devon steps in, "but I also need to keep training. That two-on-one was rough."
"You'll get there," I assure her. She nods. I turn to Anthony, "You both will. I'm sure more wins will be in your future."
He smiles, "Thanks, Zion."
"Hey, good game," I see Miguel get off the platform and reach out to fistbump Eli.
My ex just looks at Miguel and shrugs, "Yeah, sure."
"Are you seriously pouting right now?" I hear Tory ask, suddenly involved in whatever this is.
I see those left in the dojo turn to her as she raises her voice. Some of them even look worried because it's Tory.
"I'm not... Yeah, fine, it was a good game," Eli rolls his eyes. "Zion and Miguel win again, yeah, yeah." My eyes widen when he says that.
"You can cut it with the loser attitude," Tory continues to call after him. "You should be appreciative of Z, actually."
"What are you talking about?" he wonders. I'm just as confused.
"Today at lunch. Not only did her speech absolve you of the cheating rumors, but she said you were a 'good partner,'" Tory points out. I falter when I realize what that sounds like in the context of him. "You know what her saying something like that gets you? Girls. To be interested. In you, dumbass. So you should be thanking her."
"I don't think-" Eli begins to argue.
"Wait, that doesn't bother you, Robby?" Bert speaks up.
"No," Robby shakes his head. "I know my girlfriend. Just like I know she would never cheat. Just like I know cutting her out is stupid." His attention turns to Eli now. I smile slightly as Robby defends me.
"How many times do we have to go through this? You two fake cheated and convinced everyone it was real!" Hawk yells.
I begin to argue, "Because you-"
"But nobody else knew that-"
Tory interjects, "She just said today-"
"-until it was too late! I'm already a joke!" Hawk says.
I take in a deep breath and reply, "But we were fine until you decided you wanted a gir-"
"Yes, I did! I don't understand why that's such a bad thing!"
"Because we were supposed to be friends, and instead this is our only conversation in a week," I argue.
"Because you-"
"All right!" Miguel yells between us. Both Hawk and I look at him in surprise when he does. "We get it. You're both angry, and you both have your reasons. But Hawk, she did stick up for you today when she didn't have to."
He turns away with a frown when Miguel says this.
"We're so close to the Sekai Taikai, and for just a second we were actually an united team with Cobra Kai gone and rivalries ending. Can't you two just get along?" Miguel wonders.
It's silent for a moment as I look at Hawk for his decision.
Then, in a plain tone of voice, Hawk says, "Thank you."
I stare in surprise at the words. But I'm not surprised by the tone. I can easily see he's being disingenuous but civil.
So I reply with a small nod of my head, "You're welcome."
Our eyes meet for a second; I can see the anger and jealousy within.
So I turn away, and everyone seems to accept that as enough. Maybe it even convinced them. Maybe we can pretend this is normal.
"You all right?" Robby checks in as they disperse. I nod. "Okay, so, maybe pizza tonight? So nobody has to cook?" I nod.
But I know that no matter what it looks like on the outside, there's still so much to resolve with Hawk. I just don't know how after what I've already done today. I won't regret being happy with my friends and dojo and new place or for being in a trust-filled relationship.
"Hi," Demetri walks over as I grab my bag, "I'm sorry about him."
I look at him in confusion, "You're apologizing?"
"I just want to be clear that I am on both sides," he explains. "And I'm glad that we're friends now, and I don't want his stubborness to change that."
"Okay," I tell him with a slight nod of respect.
"Okay," he smiles slightly. Then he looks at Robby, "That goes for you, too."
"I know," Robby says in response.
"Okay," Demetri nods awkwardly. "Well, I guess I'll go try to talk some sense into him. Again."
"Good luck," Robby says in a slightly snarky tone as the boy walks away.
Demetri turns back and gives him a thumbs up. He really is a dork.
"I'll pay," Robby says as we walk to the car, "if we can go to Papa Mario's." His new favorite pizza place that's near my apartment.
"Bet," I tell him as we get in.

A/N: What a shift! Demetri kind of siding with Zion? I actually love them ngl.
Next chapter is the Halloween dance! This is your last chance to suggest costumes for literally any character!
Until next time <3
