Chapter One

YOUR POV:

The bell sounded, signifying the end of your class for the final time. Everyone took their time getting from their seats and starting to chat with one another as they all slowly made it out of the classroom. One of the first ones out being a boy with half red half white hair and a 5''9 frame.

Shoto Todoroki, son of the second-ranked superhero in all of the world. Anyone who didn't live under a rock was well aware of his status. Well, even if they lived under a rock it would be a plausible deduction to assume that they were probably aware of it as well. It was a fact that people just knew like 1+1 or what the powerhouse of the cell is. This fact resulted in him catching a lot of second-hand fame both inside and out of the classroom. What made this all notable was how he never seemed to show any interest in not only the people who gawked to him about his luck but he never seemed to care about anything much at all. He minded his own business more often than not, he was nearly top of your class and he had gotten into UA due to recommendations alone. That's all you really knew about him...whoever he was, whatever he liked, whatever his motives...he was one impressive question mark.

You glanced out of the window in the opposite direction of the door, admiring the scenery. You didn't feel any kind of obligation to make it out of this classroom. You let yourself get lost in your own thoughts for a moment before taking one more scan around the classroom.

Empty.

You gave a small sigh before forcing yourself from the desk, out the door, and then pulling yourself down the narrow hallways. The idea of closing the school doors behind you and having the rest of your life change forever was really overwhelming. It wasn't that you didn't look forward to becoming a pro hero, it was the insecurity of not being good enough that made leaving on this day such an obstacle. You couldn't stay forever, even you knew that. Finally, you made it to the double doors that separated your past and your future. You clench your fist and tilted your chin upwards before pushing the doors open and feeling the sun prickle upon your skin.

You let yourself bask in its glory before your eyes captured a unique sight in its path. It was your ex-classmates huddled around a picnic table and seemed to be watching two people playing a game.

Okay...
'ex-' classmates is a little overdramatic. Right before the bell, they were your classmates.

You walked over to the crowded table and greeted with the sight of two boys playing chess. It seemed to be a very unphased Todoroki playing against an...ex-classmate...whos name seemed to slip your mind. You decided to continue watching the two boys moving their pieces from one square to another. You noticed as the nameless boy's movements took longer and longer Todoroki's became quicker and quicker. He must either be extremely reckless or very prepared. It was hard to conclude. After only a few moments, Todoroki made his last move before placing his head in his hands and looking up at the boy who will not be named.

"checkmate again...Montamei" Ah...montamei. The ex-class wasn't hesitant to follow his words with a clap. Montamei looked at the board in disbelief, getting surrounded by the claps that celebrated his loss. He didn't bother saying anything as he slid Todoroki some money and hardly pushing himself from the table. Huh, they must have placed some kind of bet. Montamei walked away with frustration and distraught very apparent with every step.

Shoto kept his head in his hands as he watched the boy tantrum away. Only a few moments later, his voice rang with boredom.

"Would anyone else like to try?" You watched as the group of heads looked around from one to another. There would be occasional 'hell no' that someone would whisper to another. It was safe to assume that he had played a fair amount of games if everyone was this hesitant to go against him.

huh.

Shoto's POV

I looked around at the crowd of eyes that appeared in front of me, each one darting away once I made eye contact. I pulled my head from my hands and started to reach for my bag. I'm not even sure what drew me to playing this game with underlings before I even began. "If there is no one else...I should be-"

"Could I try?" an innocent voice sounded. I froze for a moment, debating at that moment if I should just head home or give this girl a flicker of hope that she could beat someone like me in a game that was almost my second nature. My eyes looked back up at the awed crowd as they all looked at this one girl that stood in the back. I scanned her figure quickly before waving my hand over and looking down at the board.

There was no doubt if I looked at her any longer, it would have been clear how I found her attractiveness. She took a seat across from me, her eyes meeting mine for a second before she tilted her head.

"Small confession. I've never actually played...but I watched that last round and I think I get the idea. I just ask you to take it easy on me." she gave me a small smile and her eyes seemed to light up as she watched my eyebrows raise. Was she kidding? I couldn't help the smirk that found itself on my lips.

"And what's the fun in that? I can't grant you that kind of mercy." She gave a small sigh before nodding.

"I suppose the best way to learn is to throw someone in and see if they swim. I'll just have to try my best!" she brings her head up from the tilt and gives me yet another smile. I start rearranging my pieces and watched as she mirrored my actions.

"I don't believe I ever caught your name."

"I don't believe that it's relevant information for a simple chess game." She gives me a small glance before returning her eyes to my movements.  She looked as-

Wait...what? I pause for a moment. Her voice sounded so innocent...so fragile..but to contain that much sarcastic undertone? Who does she think she is?

YOUR POV AGAIN.
SORRY, THIS WON'T BE A CONSTANT THING. I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE YOU KNEW THAT SHOTO THINKS YOUR CUTE, BC YOU ARE. <3

A small secret? Having the upper hand was somewhat of a turn-on. For him to ask what your name was despite it being called daily in class means he had no information on you at all. You could tell that in this moment of realization, he knew exactly what that meant. He was at a complete disadvantage. His lips parted before he forced himself to speak.

"Let's make this interesting then. Since I am taking your chess virginity, I think we should signify it with a bet."

"Y/N, don't. Just--" you frowned as you heard your name get called. It appears as though one of your ex-classmates just found them on a newly found enemy list. You cut them off before this traitor gave him any more information like a blood type or size shoe.

okay...overdramatic again.

"What did you have in mind?"

"How about a simple one. If I win, you grant me the opportunity to take you out and get to know you a little more. If you win, you get an I.O.U. ...a favor coupon that you can cash in at any time for anything." You watched him for a moment before sticking out your arm. He met your hand with a shake. "Very well, you can have the advantage and take the first move...(Y/N)"

Bastard.

Without much hesitation, your eyes meet the board and you move a pawn to e-4. Which he quickly met with moving his to f-5. "So...I heard you got into UA based on recommendations." your voice rang, not letting your eyes leave as you then move another pawn to f-4.

"With my skill, it shouldn't come as much shock"  He moves to A-5 with another pawn.

"No, I'm sure you iced the written portion." He gave a small chuckle. Your pun didn't go unnoticed, but it seemed as though your plan was. You took your priest and moved it to D-3.

"I think people only take interest in how others got in if they wanted to attend the school themselves. So, tell me...any plans for the entrance exam?"

"Lucky deduction but a false assumption I think. However, I don't need a plan." He moved his pawn E-4. He raised his eyebrows and you could feel his eyes begging to meet yous out of our curiosity. Instead, you continue to look at the squares in front of you. You allow yourself to continue.  "I don't know why I'd need one if I got in the same way you did."

Priest e-4. He seemed surprised as he prematurely moved his pawn to H-6.

"Now you have my interest...if I may ask what quirk do you have?" You finally looked up to make eye contact with him. You could feel the twinkle in your eyes as you spoke and moved your queen to H-5.

"There are a few things you should never ask a lady. One is her weight and the other is her quirk"

"Only if she wishes not to speak on either of those things." he moved his pawn to g-6.

"So todoroki-"

"Call me Shoto." He looks at the board, his eyes getting a little wide as he finally catches on to the state his game is in.

"Fine...Shoto, I believe I should probably get your number from you."

"what, why?"

Queen g-6.

"I'm going to need to contact you to cash in my I.O.U." You give him a small smile. "I believe this is what they call a checkmate."

Another secret? You knew how to play chess.

____________________________________________________________________________

Y'all will have to let me know how this is. Let me know if you think I should change anything :)

I tried to take a more serious approach to my writing. Who knows how long it will last.

This is also a 5 A.M write, so I'm not asking for mercy. I'm just asking for a sleep schedule that makes sense.
