Grains Of Sand
she complains, stomach pains
wants to get out of a test
she goes to the doctor,
but her prescription isn't rest
she stays for an hour
thinks, "what could it be?"
she had lied, there was nothing wrong
well, presumably
she's given an hourglass,
sand pooled at the top
but sand and tears begin falling
she can't make them stop
she thinks of the hours she's wasted
reading texts, waiting in line
and how many grains of sand fell
how had she wasted so much time?
she took the hourglass home
tried her best to be fast
decided to live every grain
as if it was her very last
she took a break from classes
took a drive to anywhere but home
forgot about hour hourglass
found the right road to roam
her car broke down halfway to somewhere
so she pulled up her sleeves
she put the pieces back together somehow
she saved herself this once, so she'd keep following her lead
she paused in the middle of nowhere,
grasslands and some trees
but in the middle of nothing, instead of empty
she finally felt freed
the hourglass was there of course
tucked somewhere in the backseat
but time didn't feel like an enemy
it wasn't an adversary to beat
she continued down her path
drove her way to a coastal beach
discovered that the oceans' sands
had lessons they wished to teach
the grains of sand kept falling
as she walked along the shore
she knew moments like these were precious
but her heart promised there would be more
she met a man in the sun
his smile was something new
as she spent more time with him
the more her feelings grew
she stayed at the beach,
with its sand and her man
everything was perfect
going along an unsaid plan
they kissed on a Friday
under fireworks, how cliche?
his lips tasted like cinnamon and salt
it was night becoming day
it was over before she knew
spring break had come and gone
he left back to some city
she had to move back along
were those grains of sand wasted?
she couldn't quite tell
although the days ended with nothing
she didn't regret that they fell
she kept those moments with her
although now she kept an eye on the time
still, half hidden in the backseat
halfway through her supply
she went back to the doctors,
they offered some treatment
they could give her more sand
more time to be spent
but what was its worth? she wondered
would she be waiting in line?
or would it be walking in the sand
making memories divine
"no, thank you, I'll walk my course."
brave words, strong will
she wanted that sand
but she didn't need more time to kill
she flew to France at twenty three
she wanted a chance at true love
she met people and made friends
she thought it to be enough
she fell in love one day
a meeting strictly by chance
a redhead man with a crooked nose
for many a night they danced
they stayed together
travelled London and Spain
she learned all about him
his dream of designing aeroplanes
she wore a bright dress
colorful and wild
no traditional, easily dirtied white
for that, she had no time
walking down the aisle,
hues of green trailing behind her
she cared not of others thoughts
only herself, and her future
the hourglass, fully forgotten
only had a few grains left
but they stayed for her
ever thankful guests
she never looked for the hourglass
although she stumbled upon it one day
she marvelled at how long she'd had it
how long time had stretched for her to stay
she no longer counted moments,
having left that to her past
lost time passed quickly
but the good memories would last
