BRENDON WASN'T FAZED when the door to the coffee shop opened even though it was after midnight and the sign read CLOSED instead of OPENED. No, instead of the surprise, a smile crept onto his features as he knew who had disregarded the sign and walked in anyway.
"How's patrol going?" he asked without looking up, hearing as his boyfriend brought down two chairs for them to sit.
"The usual. There was a girl trying to punch a guy so I stopped it. Didn't stick around to ask questions," Peter answered.
Brendon hummed, taking his rag which he had been using to clean of the counter and placing it in its rightful home before going to the coffee maker and starting on another cup for them. "Any specific requests?"
"None," Peter answered, shaking his head, as he always did. Brendon didn't know how he hadn't found a coffee he liked with the amount he had been drinking since they had started their little midnight meetings. Brendon had served him plenty cups and now they had every type of coffee the place had to offer.
"Butter toffee it is," Brendon said before turning around and walking from behind the counter to lift up Peter's mask to his nose and give him a kiss. He hummed into the kiss, melting easily as he let Peter hold onto him tightly, trusting the boy to keep him up straight due to his superhuman strength.
One thing that Brendon had learned with dating Peter was that it was a great thing to date someone who was really strong since he lacked any sort of physical strength. Thankfully for him, Peter had more than the average human and could do everything that Brendon couldn't and more - like hold him up when he absolutely melted into Peter.
"Hey," Peter said softly when they broke away, his voice full of fondness and love.
"Hey," Brendon replied with the same tone. They hadn't said the big L word yet even though Brendon definitely felt it. He knew that he loved Peter; that the boy was the one for him until eternity, that he would love to become the trophy husband of Peter Benjamin Parker as he had always dreamed of before. Now the reality was even better and he could truly himself becoming such a thing.
He loved Peter but he was still scared to admit it. He still had doubts that Peter would laugh and it would all be a huge joke played on it, as if he was on an episode Punk'd or anything. And Peter hadn't said it either, with didn't allow him to feel comfortable returning it.
And really, he had been the one to confess his feelings first and start their relationship therefore it was Peter's responsibility to say I love you first. He didn't make the rules, he just enforced them, which meant no blurting out the three words until Peter did first. And, since he had already decided on forever with Peter, he could wait as long as the boy needed to tell him that.
"Coffee's done," Peter whispered and Brendon blinked, feeling blood begin to rush towards his cheeks since he hadn't even been aware that he had stared at Peter for so long.
He knew that they were dating and it was totally okay for him to just gaze into Peter's eyes and never stop looking, or for him to drool over the boy and check him out, but he still didn't like getting caught. It seemed like such a private thing, for him and him alone, and when Peter noticed it seemed almost wrong. This was a secret, a little play as he teased himself with just glimpses of the boy and when Peter caught him, it ruined the fun and still made him feel embarrassed.
"Right," Brendon said, moving back to pour the coffee into two separate cups for them before bringing the cups to the table which Peter had prepared for them.
"How was work?" Peter asked, taking the cup in his hands and soaking up the warmth. New York winters were terrible and since he had a hard time with thermoregulation since he had been bitten, it was even worse on him. Still, that didn't stop him from going out on patrol. Brendon still complained every day about the weather and the snow, wishing desperately that he could trade the cold for the overbearing heat of Georgia.
He might have hated the hot Georgian summers where every day was in the nineties with such a dense humidity, but he found himself praying for that instead of this wretched cold.
"Fine," Brendon shrugged, "Harry came for, like, an hour but he just stared at Bren the whole time and make kissy faces at him. They made out in the back for like five minutes before coming back out, too."
Peter hummed and nodded, "Anything else?"
"Nope," he shook his head, "But a customer did huff at me because I didn't pronounce her name right. Like, there are different ways to say every name I can't always get them right!"
"I bet she complained about it for an hour to her friends," Peter snorted, "He didn't get my name right, Sharon! How could you? I bet he intentionally said it wrong to get on my nerves, ugh!"
Brendon laughed loudly at Peter's imitation, throwing his head back as he cackled as the other boy joined in because of the infectious noise. Eventually, when finished, he just stared at the boy before reaching over the table to grab Peter's hand to hold into his own.
Even though he couldn't see Peter's eyes because of the mask, he could see how Peter blushed because of this action and he grinned. He still had that effect on him even though it had been months, but Peter had the same effect on him too so it was even.
It was weird to think about their relationship, how they came together, how they were so close to falling apart because of his own worries and insecurities. It started at a party where he vowed to Cindy that if he didn't fuck that boy that night, he was going to marry him, and then he fell for his smile, his eyes, and his nervous stutter. He fell in love with Peter Benjamin Parker and it was just so beautiful and pure and he wouldn't exchange it for anything in the world.
And then there was the other side of them, the one that led to this night right here. Here, in the coffee shop, after midnight. It all started how it was going to end; Peter blushing with Brendon smiling fondly and them holding hands, no longer strangers but lovers, and all from a simple set of coffee dates.
"Brendon?"
"Hmm?"
"I think you should that I actually really hate coffee and would rather have hot chocolate than anything else. I didn't wanna say anything before but you said that I shouldn't lie to you anymore, so..."
"What the fuck, Peter!"
