Letter
Dear Dearest of Mothers,
In your last letter you curiously asked me why (Oh, why, oh why my Dearest Boy) I have not stepped foot these last two months. I could give you a handful of lies of why I'm late, like my watch was two months slow, but you know I am an honest lad. My actions were unwillingly executed because there was no other way. My excuses, dear Dearest of Mothers, are written here with paper and ink for you to see.
One terrible, terrible day,
Alice came out to play.
She chased the rabbit and sadly he fell,
down, down, down, a bottomless wishing well.
(I had to fish him out, you see. And then – )
I had to sail a thousand seas
to locate all the lost little mes.
You see, sometimes I shatter into a thousand shards
and bits of me run off, for miles and yards!
(I am NOT lying, dear Dearest of Mothers).
I met a queen who disliked tea
and worst of all, she disliked me!
She tried to kill me with a blade of glass

As I write the night grows dark and sleep calls to me. You know that without at least fifteen hours of slumber I look terrible the next day, something between a damp dishrag and a schnauzer.
Mother dear, I'll come visit you next year.
