Coffee Boy
Alex sat on his bed staring down at the jumble of words sprawled out on his computer screen. This paper was due tomorrow, and it had to be perfect.
"I'm never gunna get this thing done," he sighed to himself, falling backward letting his body sink into the bed. In reality, the paper was pretty much finished since the assignment was to write a five-page essay on the government system. Hamilton was already on his fourteenth page. Although what else would anyone expect, he was a writer, and a pretty good one at that. Turning his head to look at the time he groaned.
11:37pm
"Shit it's late," he thought to himself, slowly rising up from the bed back into a sitting position. He looked at the laptop, then the clock again, before finally coming to the conclusion that he needed coffee. It would be nice to have a coffee maker for how much he drank it, but who has the money for that? Alexander sure didn't, being a college student and renting his own apartment a couple of blocks away from the campus.
He completely got out of the bed, put on a hoodie then shoes, and left in search for a coffee shop still open at this ungodly hour.
He exited the apartment and walked down the street. Luckily he remembered about a small cafe that should be open until midnight. Slowly but surely he made his way until he reached the shop. He went to open the door. Thank God it wasn't locked. Checking his phone he looked at the time
11:53pm
He made it, and with just enough time to spare. The tables looked nice and shiny, recently cleaned for the night. Alex felt bad for coming in last second but shrugged it off immediately after. He was going to take the coffee home anyway, no use in staying around this place, although the scenery was nice.
"What will it be?" a voice from behind the counter spoke up. "Keep in mind we'll be closing soon, not to be rude or anything sir."
Alex was about to answer, looking away from the decor when his eyes fell upon the coffee boy working there. He paused for a moment feeling shy. "Shy? What? Alexander Hamilton you out of all people shy?" he thought, standing there for another brief moment before realizing he was staring. A slight blush came across his face before finally answering. "Um, I'll just have a black coffee," he finally replied. "Alright then," the boy behind the counter said. Alex felt a bit embarrassed, knowing it was odd of someone to order such a bitter coffee. It was silent for a while.
"You're here awfully late," the boy stated.
"Oh, haha yeah... I have this huge paper due tomorrow and I just needed some extra energy to help with the work flow," Alex replied, feeling a bit funny with himself.
"Ah, I know how that is," the boy replied still making the drink, not looking up. "I'm actually working this job trying to raise some extra funds for college, King's to be exact."
"Funny, that's where I am too, well, not my dorm, I live in an apartment down the street, but I go to school there!" Alex rambled. Why did he ramble? He sighed so quietly it was almost inaudible.
"Well it's nice to meet you, I'm John Laurens." The boy stuck his hand out, looking Alex straight into the eyes and smiled.
"Alexander Hamilton, pleasured to meet your acquaintance," he replied shaking John's hand, feeling a bit embarrassed again with his wording.
John chuckled a bit to himself and pulled his hand away. Alex chuckled back a little bit as well but more awkwardly, wondering what the heck he was doing to himself right now. The boy grabbed his order, wrote something down, and handed it to Alex.
"Have a nice night," he said still smiling, waving goodbye behind the counter, taking his apron off seeing as it was now 12:01am.
"You as well Laurens," Hamilton replied turning around to leave.
"Call me John, please," he heard the boy say kindly behind him.
"Will do John," he replied slightly turning his head showing a shy smile while walking out the door and back to his apartment.
When Alex returned home he sat down on his bed and took a sip from the coffee, glancing down at the receipt to look at it. He wasn't paying attention to how much his drink had actually cost since he was too busy gazing at the boy, handing over the money without thought. Reading it through, something at the bottom caught his eye, and he noticed some scribbled writing.
"We should talk sometime, here's my number :)"
Alexander sighed with a smile on his face. He took one last sip of the coffee before setting it down, opening his laptop, and returning to his work.
