12: Go to a higher building

Day three. It was my third day in the hospital since I was awake. I pushed the plate of cereal aside and wiped my mouth with the wrist of the hospital gown I was wearing. I sighed for the hundredth time today. I was bored as hell. Gloria spent the night here yesterday so she got to school really late. She promised to come over after school and even though I tried to convince her that I'm okay by myself, she refused. And yes, today is Monday. My third Monday in this hospital and Corey is still not awake yet.

I asked the doctor about him frequently and the result were always the same. The doctor said I was not stable enough to visit him so I'm just stuck in bed. I switched on my phone to check the time. 9:40am. I sighed again and lay flat on the bed on my back. Gloria should be here by 4pm. These days, all I do is just, sleep, eat and watch TV which is not good for my health at all.

The doctor told the nurses to avoid giving me access to any substance which contain caffeine so I'm craving it like crazy. I sighed again feeling bored than ever. Then I heard commotion going on outside my door. I took the IV fluid stand and stood up with the help of it. I opened my door in confusion and saw a man and a woman, arguing with a female nurse.

"Madam, you need to calm down. This is a hospital" the female nurse said. She had red, bob cut, hair and she looked really frustrated. The man she was arguing with looked a bit old. His hair was mix of dark brown and grey but the woman was beautiful. She had brown curled hair falling over her shoulders and from the grey eyes, she had a striking resemblance to Corey.

"No! She-" The woman started but cut herself off when she noticed me. "You!" She pointed her index finger at me with narrowed eyes. "You are the reason my son is laying down in that bed. You stupid girl! How dare you! He should have left you to get crushed instead. He shouldn't have risked his life for a useless girl like you!" She spat at me. I looked down at my feet the whole time. I deserved it. The reason for the accident was my stubbornness.

"I'm sorry" I apologized quietly as my voice wavered. "I'm-"

"Your apology is useless if it can't bring back my son" she yelled at me and I looked up to meet her with teary eyes. Bring back her son? What does that mean. Is Corey....

No.

No. He can't be. He has to make it. "Your son is not dead" I muttered but she heard me.

"He is half-dead. He is in a coma for God's sake! All because of you! And look at you. You are smiling, eating, enjoying life while he lays on the hospital bed, suffering!" She yelled at me as tears ran down her face. The man, which I assumed to be her husband, held her back in an embrace as she cried against him.

The man looked at me and turned around, leaving with Corey's mother. I stumbled, feeling overwhelmed with everything going on. I needed air. "Miss, please go back to your room. You need to rest." The red haired nurse with a bob cut, urged.

"I need some air" I croaked out and she gave me a worried look before nodding. I found my way to the top of the building and the strong wind blowing swayed my hospital from side to side. I sighed heavily.

I stood by the ledge and sat down. I was not good with heights but at this moment, I couldn't care less. I missed my mom and my dad so much even if they were always absent and I miss my sister. I admit, I had hoped that she would have come to pay me a visit but at the same time, I wasn't surprised that she didn't. I was about to let out my frustrations when I noticed a blonde haired guy, standing on the ledge. He looked like he was about to commit suicide. Really? Is this guy being serious right now?

"Hey!" I called his attention and his eyes snapped to mine. I bit bed they were a light brown.

"Please don't try to stop me" He said. I raised an eyebrow and shrugged.

"I wasn't trying to. I was just going to tell you to go to a higher building, like that one" I said and pointed to a tall building at a distance. I'm sure it has up to eighty floors with it's height. "The impact would be harder so your death is instant" I completed and he gave me an amused look.

"You're so..." He trailed off, unable to find an adjective for me. I brushed a strand of hair away from my face. "That was unexpected" he finally said, still standing on the ledge.

"Is that so? What were you expecting then?" I said, feigning interest.

"I don't know. Lectures about how hard life is and how you have to deal with it" He shrugged and crossed his arms over his chest. I noticed that his blond hair was shaggy and he had light freckles on one of his cheek. He looks around my age. I can't tell if he is muscular or not because his hospital gown won't let me. I snickered.

"Wrong. You don't deal with life, you learn to live with it. Everyone has had a problem or will have a problem at one point in their lives so if all of them think the only solution is throwing themselves off a ledge, how many people do you think will be left in this world?" I said and he was quiet. "Exactly. So ponder on that. You're free to jump but I recommend that higher building or just get off the ledge and learn to be stronger" I shrugged and began to walk back inside without looking back. I glanced back just in time to see him hopping off the ledge. I smiled to myself.

He jogged over to my side and stuck out his hand " I'm Jonah" He introduced himself but because I'm just me and I don't feel like talking or being friends with anyone. I gave him a sweet smile and said;

"And I'm hungry, so if you would excuse me." I turned forward and continued walking.

"So you're not going to tell me your name?" He said again keeping up with my pace.

"Nope" I said, popping the p. Then I thought of something " I'll tell you if you buy me coffee" I smiled. Yes!!!

"Deal" He grinned and I noticed that he had one cheek dimples. I jumped up in excitement, clapping my hands.

"Okay, meet me in room 16C. Make sure no one sees you. I mean it Jonah, read my lips" I said and his gaze went from my eyes to my lips. "No. One." I said and snapped my fingers in front of his eyes.

"Got it." He nodded and left, leaving me behind. I giggled in excitement. I'm finally going to have some coffee after all these yearssss! Ahhh!

I walked to my room with a big smile plastered on my face. I swung my legs back and forth as I sat on my bed, patiently waiting for my sweet baby. I waited and waited and soon I started to doze. My eyes started to close but a knock on the door jerked me awake. My baby is here!!!

I rushed to my door and opened it halfway, enough to make Jonah peep his head inside my room. "Here it is" he whispered, extending his arms inside my room. I snatched the cup of coffee from his hand in a hurry and pulled him inside my room. I closed the door and faced him.

"I love you!!!" I cooed in happiness staring at the cup of coffee before taking a long sip.

"Wow. You really love coffee, don't you?"He chuckled in excitement.

"Yep. Coffee is bae" I licked my lips. Then I noticed something " But how do you know I like my coffee, black?" I asked, narrowing my eyes at him.

"I just guessed" he shrugged. "So...I bought you coffee. It's your turn to hold your end of the deal" He crossed his arms over his chest and sat on my bed.

"Ugh. Why do you want to know my name? It's really embarrassing" I groaned. He rolled his eyes and laughed.

"How embarrassing can it be? Just say it. I won't laugh, I promise" he said raising his right hand.

"Okay" I said and with a dramatic silence, I sighed heavily. "Strawberry" I bit my lower lip and watched his reaction. It was a mixture of confusion, amusement and more confusion.

"Um...that's your name? Like your real name?" He asked and I nodded. "Wow. That's cool" he said and I scoffed.

"You're not the one who gets lame jokes relating to the actual strawberry all the time" I said and took another sip.

"It's not that bad" he chuckled.

"You can call me Berry by the way" I said and glanced at him. There was no doubt, he was cute. But I was curious, why was he about to throw himself of a ledge? " You know...." I started, grabbing his attention " I'm glad you didn't throw yourself off that ledge. It would be such a waste of a good face" I said and took another sip from my coffee.

"Is that your way of saying I'm attractive?" He raised an eyebrow with a smirk and I was reminded of Corey. Gosh, he is laying in pain while I'm sipping coffee and chatting with a guy I met some minutes ago.

"Maybe" I said quietly. "Listen um... Jonah, I'm really tired so I would like to rest a bit" I lied, avoiding his gaze and playing with the hem of my hospital gown.

"Oh. Okay, you should rest. I'll get going" He said and headed for the door. As he opened it, the red haired nurse was in front of him. Her hand was up as is she wanted to knock. She dropped her hands to her hips and raised an eyebrow at Jonah.

"Mr Lewiston? What are you doing here?" She asked in a stern voice.

"Oh, Mara. I was just leaving" Jonah chuckled nervously before hurrying down the hallway. She averted her gaze from him and looked at me.

"Miss Dave! Is that coffee in your hands?" Uh-oh...I'm fucked.
