CODE 69 Control
Evelyn stood in front of the mirror and looked at the wound on his wrist. He wrapped a wrist wrap around it and walked out of the bathroom. Slaine sat at the dining table reading a newspaper. Evelyn sat beside him. Slaine took a sip of his coffee.
"Good morning...dad," Evelyn said.
Slaine looked up at him, "Good morning, Evelyn. Should I make you some toast?"
"Sandwiches... will do,"
Slaine kept the newspaper aside and moved towards the fridge. He took out a loaf of bread. He pressed some grape jello between the bread and kept them on a plate.
Meanwhile, Evelyn sat at the table and looked at the glass jar kept at the centre. It was filled with water. He looked at the water. It was still and calm. But slowly, ripples began forming at its surface. The water formed waves from ripples and began hitting the jar's walls. Evelyn slowly moved towards it and the glass jar burst open.
He jumped back and slaine turned around. He looked at the broken jar, "Can you stop annoying me for like a few seconds?" He frowned.
Evelyn looked at him, "It broke itself,"
"Yes, of course, it did," Slaine said sarcastically.
"I'm not lying," Evelyn said.
"Finish your food and go to school,"
"Dad, you don't trust me?" Evelyn looked into his eyes.
Slaine leaned towards him, "Evelyn, I still haven't confronted you about your bad behaviour yesterday. Stop testing me,"
Evelyn narrowed his eyes and picked up his bag, "I don't want breakfast,"
"Evelyn–"
Evelyn closed the door on his face and Slaine closed his eyes.
"...Something is horribly wrong with him,"
Evelyn got on his board and cruised his way to school. He sat inside his classroom and looked at the board as his teacher taught them the lessons. His focus shifted to a water bottle. He looked at it till the bell ring and it was gym class.
They had a swimming lesson that week. He stood in front of a ten feet deep pool while his teacher gave instructions to the other children. He sat on his knees and gently touched the water. He could hear a voice from the water.
He closed his eyes to hear it properly but suddenly his teacher shouted, "Evelyn! What are you doing there? Come back!"
He turned towards her and pulled out his hand but the water held him back and pulled his hand back in.
He shrieked out of terror and jumped away. The water gently left him and he fell back. He ran away from the pool.
"EVELYN!" His teacher screamed but he just ran and hid inside the locker room. He clenched his eyes as sweat rolled down his back. Suddenly, it rolled up again and he freaked out.
He looked into the mirror and then ran out of the locker room. He grabbed his bag and cruised back home on his skateboard. He stopped by at the bridge and slowly ran down the grass. He looked at the water and slowly moved his hands towards it.
"Yo! You're back again?"
He heard and turned back. It was those boys again. Evelyn picked up his board and decided to run but they surrounded him. Tom grabbed his from behind, "Running away?"
Evelyn hit him with his board and ran but Mike came before him and pushed him into the water.
Evelyn went sinking down the water. He could feel the water piercing through his body, like thousands of needles passing through his skin. He shrieked giving out air bubbles from his mouth. He decided to swim but the water began pulling him down. Slowly, the entire river began churning.
The boys standing beside the water looked at the river spinning itself like a top. They ran away from it while Evelyn was still stuck inside at the centre of that whirlpool. He ran out of breath and exhaled, he realised he could breathe underwater. His shirt and half of his jeans tore into the strong water pressure. He stood on the enormous waves of the river which now began resembling a huge waterfall. Everyone standing at the bridge took photos and videos.
He could stand on water, but that was not all that he could do. He moved his right hand up aside and the water turned towards the right. His eyes widened. He moved his left hand aside and the wave bent towards the left. He looked at his hands and the water slowly gushed into the Manhatten bridge. Everyone began running as the cars were thrashed at the corner of the bridge. People ran out of their cars while the railings broke and the cars fell into the water.
Evelyn was entire surrounded by a column of water. His eyes glowed green and he raised his hands. The water flowed towards him like pieces of metal towards a magnet and wrapped itself around him. He clutched the walls of water as he dug his fingers into the water which felt like jelly to him and threw the entire ball of water back into the river with him. Water splashed everywhere as it fell back into the river vent and calmed down.
Evelyn crawled out of the river and lay on the ground in his half torn jeans. He panted as he lay topless on the ground. His blue eyes slowly turned back to brown.
"A huge wave rose up near the Manhattan bridge doing immense loss to life and property. About ten people drowned to death while thirty-five are still missing. More than fifty people got injured and about five of them are in critical condition. Nobody knows the cause of such a sudden drift of water. Some say it's a supernatural force while others have brought together the concept of zero gravity but the true reason as to why this happened is still unknown." Slaine listened to the news while cooking the dinner.
He turned back and looked at the television screen. He stared at the whirlpool that rose into a huge waterfall. He dropped his knife, "This reminds me of..."
He remembered bit and pieces of the fight two years back, between Gotham and Lucifer.
"Gotham? But she is dead. Don't tell me there's another X-DROID in the city,"
Suddenly, he heard the door open. He walked to the door and froze at Evelyn's sight. He was topless and simply wore a pair of tattered jeans. His hair was wet.
"What happened?" Slaine asked.
"I...Fell into the river,"
"What? How?"
Evelyn walked towards the stairs, "Evelyn, I'm asking you something,"
"Yes, I heard you," Evelyn went upstairs and locked his door.
"Then fucking answer!"
"If I heard you once and don't answer, it means that I don't want to answer,"
"Alright, I've had enough of this bullshit. Evelyn," Slaine went upstairs and banged his palm on Eveyln's door, "Open the door, Evelyn."
"No,"
"I'm asking you politely, open the goddamn door,"
"No,"
"I SAID FUCKING OPEN IT, YOU BRATTY LITTLE SHITKID!"
"I'm taking a shower,"
"Come down once you are done," Slaine went downstairs while Evelyn stood under a hot water shower. He stared at the water flowing down the drain.
'Today was bad. Can I really control water?' He brought his hand forward but stopped himself, 'No, it's too dangerous to try anything in a closed space like this. I can't even control it properly. I need to be somewhere bigger...'
Slaine watched the news and Evelyn came downstairs, "Dad,"
"Sit down," Slaine said and Evelyn sat down. He stared at the TV screen, showing the news of what had happened that day. Slaine switched off the TV and turned towards him.
"What is wrong, Evelyn? What's the problem?" Slaine asked, calmly.
'Should I tell him?' Evelyn thought. Slaine's blue eyes met Evelyn's brown eyes, 'Nah, he's too stupid, I can deal with it myself. Let me do it this way,'
"School is a bit stressful. I'm not mad, I'm just anxious,"
Slaine took a sigh of relief, "Well," He smiled, "I guess we need a change of pace,"
'Checkmate,'
"You mean, a holiday?" Evelyn asked.
"You wanna go out this weekend?"
"I wanna go to the beach,"
"O-" Slaine stopped abruptly and looked behind Evelyn. Evelyn turned back, Valorie stood at the door. Evelyn's narrowed his eyes and his dusty blonde bangs fell over his forehead,
'This is why I seriously hate it here.
I can't have alone time with my own dad,'
