Chapter 5
With the day winding down pretty quickly, the night had owls cooing and cool breezes blowing. People were turning in or going out to party. Candles replaced the sunlight that once shined through all of the windows of each house that was in the neighborhood. If you went down the street and turned left on a corner, you would find a light teal house with a white door. The building was a nice size, yet still felt like a lot of space. There were only three people living in that house. Well, there were guests staying over tonight so the room filled up.
"Tell me again why we're doing it this way?" Orion inquired.
Jake was on the couch with a controller in his hand. He, along with the yellow and pink ranger, were racing against one another.
"Look, much as I wanted to just talk to her then and there and just get to the point," the green ranger explained, "I just thought it'd be more fun to just invite her over and welcome her."
"So welcoming her is playing twenty questions and trying to find out stuff?" Noah asked.
"Well when you say it like that it sounds wrong." Jake retorted.
His friend rolled his eyes.
"I just think that we should've been more natural about it, especially you Jake." Emma spoke up.
"What do you mean?" He questioned.
-Flashback-
After having a mini team meeting, the gang went to try and find their new little helper. She had left the premises yes, however where she went was not clear. At first, the leader suggested they split up. But before they could, a person clearing their throat caught their attention. It made everyone jump and the teen who saw them blinked with a medium wide smile.
"Oh uh...heeyyy Savannah." Troy greeted awkwardly, not expecting her to be there.
The redhead waved playfully at their faces.
"We were just coming to find you." Gia told her.
"I bet you were," Savannah responded, "considering that when I went to my car, somebody left their wallet in the space next to the driver's seat."
Everybody, excluding the red and blue ranger, shared a puzzled reaction.
"When I said don't be cheap I didn't mean give me all your money." Savannah teased.
She tossed the wallet back to the new kid. He caught it and smiled.
"But yeah I couldn't help myself, I left about a good forty dollars in there." The female warrior mentioned.
The leader gave her a look.
"I had seventy." Troy remarked.
Savannah shrugged, "said I left $40."
Troy looked surprised once he calculated how much she took. All he got was an amused smirk.
"So what?" Savannah asked, "you were looking for me why?"
The jokester of the bunch walked up to her.
"We're hanging out at my house tonight, be there at nine thirty and don't forget to bring everything you need. Later!" He said rather quickly.
He turned around and walked away from everyone. His best bud followed along with him to help set up at his place. The brave teenage girl raised an eyebrow.
"Don't worry it'll be fun. Besides, it's just a sleepover, nothing too weird." Emma tried to reassure her unsuspiciously.
She did not have to since it was not nervousness that got to her. The yellow ranger placed a hand on her shoulder and patted it before leaving with her bestie. Pressing his lips together, the silver ranger, along with the red ranger, walked up and stood in front of her.
"Is this how people get invited to do things?" Savannah asked.
"I think so, though I never really understood how some people work." Orion answered truthfully.
He then made his exit, leaving the remaining two teens alone.
-End Of Flashback-
"Hey it got the job done." Jake said to the pink ranger, "It's not like we're cops and we're trying to interrogate her."
"Yeah, we'll be careful Em." Gia told her best friend. Nearing the finish line, one player used a power up to zoom past everyone and win the race. The young blonde jumped on her feet and celebrated, "Yes! Never doubt my Yoshi."
"Geez, I was right behind you, stupid star." Emma commented to that.
Looking back at the screen, the soccer player had his mouth ajar.
"How did I get 6th place?!" He questioned incredulously, "I was right behind Bowser!"
"Yeah and then Bowser Jr. and Daisy blew you up twice." Emma told him.
Shaking his head, the bell rang. Being the closest one to the door, the lone wolf walked over and opened it. He saw a pair of blue eyes staring back at him with a bag and blanket in her hands.
"Hi." Troy greeted.
"Hi." Savannah riposted back.
"Hey!" Jake shouted from the couch.
The both of them looked at him. The red shirted boy chuckled silently and stepped out of the way, allowing the young female to enter. He closed the door and reached for her stuff.
"I appreciate you being a gentleman, but this stuff is lighter than a cloud. I've got it." Savannah stated.
Nodding, the leader watched her put her stuff down on the couch. She sat in between the girls.
"So, what's the plan clan?" Savannah quizzed, "Food, drinks, movies, gossiping? I'm assuming that's how most sleepovers go."
"Well I'll be." Noah responded sarcastically playful.
He sat on the floor while his pal passed him a controller.
"I wanna play!" Orion called from behind.
He hopped over and landed beside Jake. The introverted leading man walked over and sat down on the end.
"I call Yoshi." Noah said
"No!" Gia semi-yelled. The nerdy kid looked up at her, "Nobody gets Yoshi."
That warned anybody to not touch the green dino. Gulping a little, the blue ranger went ahead and picked Toad.
"I want Peach." Orion said.
"Why?" Emma inquired.
"Peach is hot." Orion responded.
"Uh uh, Rosalina beats her." Jake disagreed.
"How come she's not in this game?" Troy noticed.
"I know right? She should be a playable character. The Mario verse has expanded people, put the new guys in." Jake had agreed on that. He chose Waluigi as his icon.
"You wanna dive in on this reddy redhead?" The green ranger questioned.
"Do not call me that." Savannah retorted, finding that strange, "I'm good, you guys do your thing. I'll watch."
"Aww boo!" Jake reacted, to which the new female in town rolled her eyes with a smile.
"You sure? I don't feel like playing this round." Emma offered her controller.
"I'm good, seriously." Savannah answered back.
The big hearted ranger shrugged and gave it to her red counterpart. He took it and instantaneously claimed his character.
"Dude, why do you always pick Mario?" Jake inquired.
"I like Mario the most." Troy retorted, "Besides he wears red, it's kind of in my favor."
"Huh, makes sense." Noah jabbed.
He made sure that the only one that heard it was the person he was referring to. His reaction was him rolling his eyes and looking over at the girl next to him. She glanced at the young leader. A small smile reached her lips. The red ranger caught it as he shared the same look. The race began once Gia got off the home screen. There were twenty two players going at it. And as fun as it was to play the game, some people got competitive. How ironic that it was the two Rangers who suggested the game in the first place despite knowing how they act towards a loss.
"Aha! Third place baby!" Jake cheered.
An oncoming shell had one of the teens angry.
"What the heck Luigi!" Orion shouted.
Deciding that it was better to do it now then forget it later, the male brains of the group began the mini questionnaire the team put together. Well, it really was not a questionnaire, but it was like a questioning session.
"So Savannah..." Noah started the conversation, "I know you travel a lot because of your family's business, what's that like?"
The new girl shrugged a little and grabbed a chip, "I don't really think much of it, I do it like every few years or so. This one happened about three weeks ago."
"That explains why I only just met you at the mall that day." Troy brought up.
Savannah nodded.
"And uh, is it like coast to coast? Country to country?" Jake went in a bit further.
"Something like that." Savannah told him, "One time it was state to state. That one sucked since the flight out of there was delayed for forty eight hours and everyone stole all the nuts."
"What kind?" Jake asked.
"Honey roasted." Savannah replied.
The green ranger gasped as he slipped Toad up with a banana. His childhood friend glared at him.
"The jerks, honey roasted peanuts are the best." Jake replied.
"No kidding." Savannah agreed.
Yoshi came charging through as Peach knocked him to the side.
"Orion!" Gia yelled.
The silver ranger smiled with glee.
"So do you take anything like gymnastics, boxing, karate. Anything sports like?" Emma catechized.
The red ranger looked at her with cautious eyes.
"I used to." Savannah answered, "I did cheerleading in middle all three years. Highschool I did track, swimming, kickboxing, and baseball."
"You played baseball?" Gia asked.
"Yep, some of the boys were intimidated by me. Others tried to get me to help them with their pitching." Savannah responded to that.
"That explains her aim." Jake whispered to the Andresian pupil.
He nodded. Waluigi began lagging as Yoshi was passing through. That is when Toad made a surprise triumph and hit the dinosaur with a shell.
"Noah I'ma kill you!" Gia semi-screamed.
The nerdy guy laughed in amusement.
"Hey, have you heard about this place and its weird alien and monster attacks?" Jake questioned.
The red ranger peered at him while biting his lip in concern.
"Yeah." Savannah riposted, "It makes this place more exciting honestly."
"Really?" Jake began asking in suspicion, "Why do you say that?"
The redhead laid back on the couch, "Every time I come back here it's the same, ya know, and it gets boring. Some action around here really made this place stand out."
"And make it seem like people die when they come here." Emma commented to her blonde companion.
She nodded in agreement.
"But don't get me wrong, people getting hurt is not something I like to see, even though some of them deserve it." Savannah added in. She looked up at the screen again and announced, "Mario's winning."
The others watched as the videogame representer was far ahead of them.
"Yo, how in the world...?!" Jake saw in amazement.
"When did you...?" Orion wondered.
The new guy smirked a little as he kept going. They were all on the final lap and the finish line was up ahead. Yoshi used all three shells and hit Toad, Peach, and Waluigi out of the way.
"You little!" Noah semi-yelled.
The yellow ranger felt confident as her character caught up to Mario. The two were neck and neck as the finish line was only a few feet away. Not paying attention to his side of the screen, the red ranger used his power up. Yoshi was so close. All he had to do was push a little further. But alas, he came up short as the mustached plumber swiftly drove ahead of him and won. He waved to the crowd as they applauded and cheered. The female brains was in disbelief as the leader waited for her to say something.
"Wow." Was the only response that came out.
It was brought by the blue ranger himself. His fellow teammate slowly turned her head to the lone wolf, who had a wide grin on his face. Her eyes squinted.
"I hate you." Gia remarked.
Chuckling, the red ranger sat back, "Love you too."
"Dude." Jake warned.
"Not like that." Troy told him while rolling his eyes.
The green ranger nodded as he put down the controller. He grabbed his soda can and chugged down some of his Pepsi. Noah switched places with Orion, who got up to use the restroom.
"Have you ever had any run-ins with a monster before?" Gia popped the question.
It caused the green ranger to almost choke on his drink, her best friend to nearly gasp, the blue ranger to nervously fix his shirt, and the leader of them all to freeze. Glancing at her new acquaintances, the young redhead raised an eyebrow.
"Are you guys good?" Savannah asked.
"Oh uh yeah, we just hope that if you did that you weren't hurt." Troy fibbed. It was not a complete lie. He cared for her well being, even after witnessing what went on earlier that day. The thought of her being in trouble affected him rather fast.
"How sweet." The girl replied as she patted the top of his head, "But yes, I've ran into a few, except for one of them. They were useless and didn't terrify me."
"Which one wasn't cheesy?" Gia inquired.
"Gia!" Emma whisper-yelled.
The perfectionist shrugged.
"Eh I ran into one today," Savannah told them, "He's...borderline weird and crazy strong. Thank god I knew where to hit him."
"Interesting, what does he look like?" Noah asked.
Troy face palmed himself as the green ranger waited for the response.
"Us, he looks and has physical traits of a human. I don't know about the emotional parts though." Savannah answered back.
Noah nodded. Footsteps reached everyone's ears as they as they saw the male alien return from the lavatory. He stood behind the couch.
"Hey, are we asking her about-"
"Shh!!" Gia silenced him.
He made an 'oh' face before keeping quiet. Laughing to herself, the new girl shook her head.
"No offense...ok no I mean all of this." Savannah said, "You guys are the WORST at being unsuspicious."
"I could've told you that." Troy mumbled under his breath. Emma smacked his arm, to which he did not care.
"I don't know why you guys are asking me so many questions, but I weirdly appreciate it. Nobody ever really asks about my life or what I'm like. This was...nice I guess, thanks." Savannah admitted to them.
She then shot up and went to go into the kitchen. The rangers waited for her to leave before starting a private conversation.
"And this was a good idea, why?" Troy inquired.
"Because now we know some things." Jake replied.
"Like what? I was in the bathroom, by the way you need more toilet paper." Orion brought up.
Jake gave him a look.
"She didn't deny she was fighting Kent and that she knows about the monsters." Emma stated, "That's something."
"And she's fought before and knew where to hit him. How would she know that if that's her 'first time' seeing him?" Gia rhetorically asked.
The leader nodded as the silver ranger sat down.
"Well I mean if she fought monsters and Kent before, she must be good." Noah spoke up.
"Mmm we don't know for sure. Who knows? It could be all for show." Jake disagreed.
"It would be cool if she is." Emma talked, "Having another girl to the team would be nice." The boys mocked offence as the pink ranger went to change her words, "I mean I love you guys too-"
"Mhm." Orion remarked in disbelief.
Emma smiled while rolling her eyes.
"Guys." Troy alerted his team, "Let's take it down a notch. Yes, she may be hiding something about how she could just fight Kent no problem. But if we keep doing stuff like this, it'll give away the fact that we know something she doesn't and she'll be doing the asking. We can't just ask her 'subtle' questions, which by the way was horrible." He put down the controller and looked to his second in command, "Gia, ever heard of a normal conversation?"
"Ok ok, point taken, we'll stop. The next step is to go to Gosei with this and try to figure it out." She responded.
"Ha! That's funny." Jake piped up, "This being the freaky tiki who just gave us powers and shoved us into battle. Who didn't tell us about Robo Knight. Who barely gave us advice. And we're gonna go to HIM?"
"He gave us powers and he can darn well take them away." Noah reminded him, "He wouldn't of chosen us if he didn't want us specifically to fight the bad guys. So, we should at least try."
The conversation continued to linger on. Their voices were loud, but could not be heard from the backyard. Outside of the living room, someone was standing in the corner and made sure to hide their face. She blinked a few times before moving away and having her back against the wall. A sigh escaped her lips as she was aware of what she had to do. Not tonight, tomorrow. What? She felt it was better this way. After all, why not let her fellow guests have the satisfaction of thinking their secret was not let loose?
