Chapter 4: Preparations
One week after S-Class trial changes were announced
Master Makarov's POV:
'It's time to announce this year's nominees. At least there will be jobs and people won't be complaining about not finding one...' I got up on stage and said, "Listen up you brats! I have selected this year's nominees for the S-Class trials." Everyone was listening to me. Waiting for me to announce the lucky people. "The first nominee... Freed Justine!" He looked shocked, but I saw Laxus smile at him. He stepped up to stand in front of the stage. "The second nominee... Gajeel Redfox!" "Gihi! You're all going down!" He too stepped forward, imitating Freed's actions. "The third nominee... Juvia Lockser!" She stayed quiet as she stepped forward. "The fourth nominee... Cana Alberona!" She walked up to where everyone else was, mug of booze in hand. "The fifth nominee... Elfman Strauss!" "I'm a real MAN!" Evergreen could be seen giving him a hug, then quickly pushing him away. He joined the other four up front. "The sixth nominee is... Levy McGarden!" She stepped forward and as she did so, you could hear her teammates, Jet and Droy, yelling, "WOO HOO!" "GO LEVY!" "The seventh and eighth nominees are... Natsu Dragneel and Gray Fullbuster!" "HELL YEAH! I'M ALL FIRED UP!" "You're all going down!" "These 8 brats will be competing for the title of S-Class this year! You all have 2 weeks to prepare before we head to Tenrou Island! Make good use of your time!" With that, I jumped down from the stage, went to the bar, and got some booze.
Natsu's POV:
"It seems like our predictions were right." I was talking to Gray as we went to the forest near my house to get ready. "Yeah. I'm just happy we left before Lucy decide to blow up about not being chosen. Especially since she was in the guild before Juvia and Gajeel." We decided we would be working on the magic we learned while training and meditating. We decided to run to my house, so we got there in a couple seconds. We decided that for the first week we would meditate, only stopping if we absolutely had to. The next week we worked on our other magic. We lit random things on fire so I could practice controlling the flames. I also worked on applying the Hell Phoenix flames to my own, making them much stronger. Gray had worked on his Devil Slayer magic while I did this. He practiced controlling the markings on his body. He was able to get it to cover his entire right arm, a small part of his face, and about half of his torso. He worked on all his different Devil Slayer attacks and even combined his magic to where he could use his maker magic to make objects with his Devil Slayer ice. We were going to be more than ready... then again... we already were...
Gajeel's POV:
'Gihi! I'll show the two idiots not to mess with me. I'll destroy them in the trials!' I was thinking to myself when Levy walked up to me. "Heya shrimp! What do ya' need?" "Well I was uh... I was wondering if you wanted to go train together for the next two weeks?" I noticed she was blushing as she was asking the question. I said, "Sure! We can go to the bottom of Mt. Hakobe and train." She said, "O-Ok. Lets go!" For the next two weeks me and Shrimp trained for hours. We did physical training, Levy doing less than me, and then worked on our magic. By the end of the two week we felt more than ready to take the others down. We even said that if we were the final two, we would fight 2 vs 4.
Juvia's POV:
'H-how was I chosen? I haven't been in the guild that long.' I was lost in my own thoughts, thinking about how to do my training when Lucy came up to me. "Hey Juvia!" "Hello Lucy! What's up?" "Nothing. I was just wondering if you wanted a training partner to help you get ready for the trials." I said, "I'd like a training partner. Then we could spar and get stronger. I was thinking of heading to the beach. Want to head there so we can train?" "Sure. Sounds like a plan." We went to the beach and began our training. Even though she wasn't in the trials, Lucy said she wanted to train to get stronger. We sparred, meditated, worked on our magic, and did a small amount of physical training. I felt like I was ready for the trials when the two weeks were up.
Freed's POV:
'I will do my best to win and join Laxus in his rank as an S-Class wizard!' Bickslow came up to me saying, "Hey man, wanna go train for the trials? I could be your partner." His 'babies' echoed "Partner. Partner." I nodded, "We should go back behind the guild to the training grounds for now." He nodded and followed me to the training ground where we began our training. We sparred for what seemed like hours each day. Then we would do a small amount of meditating, mainly to regain our lost magic energy faster. Then I would gather information on my competition. Then we would spar again. We repeated the cycle again and again until the two weeks were over. 'I will crush my competition!'
Elfman's POV:
After I was nominated, Ever said, "Wanna go train for the trials? I now I'm not competing, but I could help you I suppose." I smiled and said, "Training. MANLY style!" We trained for the next two weeks, fighting and intelligence. Ever helped me get to know my opponents better and help me try and figure out which beast soul to use for each person. I was more than ready for the fights that were in my near future. "I'm gonna handle the competition like a MAN!"
Cana's POV:
'Booze, booze, booze, booze... trials.... wait.. TRIALS!! Oh yeah. I've gotta train!" I asked Lisanna if she would help me train and she agreed. I won't lie... about half the time I was supposed to be training, I was drinking... 'Eh... I'll be alright when it's time for the fights...' (I ran out of ideas.......)
Laxus' POV:
Guildarts, Mira, Erza, and I all went up to Mt. Hakobe and began training. Sure we were S-Class wizards already, doesn't mean we can let our challengers face us without preparing ourselves first. Before we went to the mountain, we didn't know what to do for the next couple weeks. Then Erza said, "I Think we should head somewhere and train before the battles. Sure we are already S-Class, but you guys saw Gray and Natsu earlier. Not to mention while we were on the mission, those didn't use much magic at all. And then we can't forget what Guildarts said before the fight earlier. They managed to push him back!" Mira said, "Yeah I agree. Besides, the other competitors will be training for these two weeks, so if we just sat around and did nothing, we might have a bit more trouble beating them." So we all agreed to head to the mountain. That brings us to now.
First we worked on physical abilities, running push ups, crunches, anything to increase our strength. We also ended up using weights, per Erza's request of course. I don't understand why she would make us train so hard to defeat the finalists... unless it was because 'them'. Next we worked on our magic. Guidarts didn't do much, but he demolished a few rocks and things of the sort. Mira went into many of her Satan Soul forms and practiced her attacks. Erza asked if we could work together. I would get to attack with my lightning, and she would block or attack it with her swords. It wasn't a spar or anything, just practicing different attacks. When we were done with that, we did spar. First the girls, then me and Guildarts.... 'I regret that decision now....' We rested for awhile, and then took Guildarts on 3 vs 1. He won... but he did have to use more power than usual, which I saw as a good thing.... until we were attacked of course. We continued this until we had to leave for Tenrou Island.
*Time skip 2 weeks*
Gray's POV:
It was the day we were heading to Tenrou Island. Me and Natsu woke up, put on our normal clothes, ate, and headed to the docks. Once we arrived, we realized we were the first ones there, so we did what any couple would do... FIGHT! We just did simple hand-to-hand combat, nothing serious. We were there for about 10 minutes before the S-Class mages and Gramps showed up. "Morning you two." In unison we said, "Morning Erza!" We greeted the others in the same manner. We stood around and talked for a while, mostly catching up again.
After about 30 more minutes, all the finalists and their training partners were there. Gramps had allowed the people who helped us train to come along to see the fights. He stood on a bench and said, "Listen up you brats! We are about to board the boat to Tenrou Island! And before any of you ask, this will be a 6 hour boat ride to the island. And under no circumstances will you be allowed to share the location of he island!" I looked around and saw all two, well one, dragon slayer go pale at the mention of the long ride. 'I didn't know second generation dragon slayers could get sick' 'Well of course they can Ice Princess. They're still dragon slayers. I'm just wondering why Metal Head isn't freaking out?' 'I don't know. Why on't you ask?' 'I will on the boat. He probably doesn't get motion sickness yet.' 'Yet?' 'Well duh. You only get motion sickness when you have passed a certain level. Then it goes away once you reach a much higher level.' I laughed. I mean, he pretty much just called him pretty weak. 'Natsu had his motion sickness when we were 8! If Metal Head still doesn't have his, it's kinda pathetic...'
We boarded a boat with the Fairy Tail emblem on the flag. We got on and Natsu 'got sick' wile Laxus actually did. The two of them were looking like they were about to puke. Gajeel eventually came up to the other dragon slayers and said, "Gihi! You guys are pathetic. You're getting beaten by a boat. Guess we know who the strongest dragon slayer in the guild is!" Natsu and Laxus looked at each other, then at Gajeel, and began laughing. "Wh-what's so funny?" Laxus, while holding in his breakfast, said, "I wasn't even raised by a dragon and I know what this means." Then Natsu said, "Your the weakest of the three of us! You don't get motion sickness." Gajeel looked at them like they were crazy. "How am I the weakest if you two are the ones about to blow chunks?" Natsu replied, "It seems kinda dumb, but a dragon slayer getting sick on vehicles is normal. It shows their strength. Once you hit a certain strength level, you get sick on vehicles." "It's true you know. We've been getting sick for almost our whole lives. How does that make you feel?" Laxus looked even worse while trying to speak. Gajeel walked away looking pissed. 'I guess he was trying to make 'em mad.' I walked over to the other dragon slayers, "I didn't realize that 'The Great Laxus' would actually show his motion sickness." Natsu laughed while Laxus just stared at me. "Yeah well the guild was bound to find out eventually." For the rest of the ride we just talked. Well, the best we could with sick dragon slayers...
When we finally got to the island, Natsu acted the way he did when we went on missions 3 years ago. He jumped off the boat and began kissing the sand screaming, "Land! Solid ground! Not some torture devise from hell!" We laughed at his antics. Laxus was obviously happy to be off the boat, but no where near the extent of Natsu's acting. Gramps led us to a clearing on the island. (The place where Guildarts fought Bluenote) He said, "This will be where the fight will be held. Those who are not fighting will stand on the ledges. Base camp is also on the ledges. you will be sleeping in groups of two. Now everyone, rest up! The fights begin tomorrow at 10 am." With that, we all went up to camp, claimed our tents, and had a rather relaxed day before the matches begin.
