A Slow, But Sincere Start; Johnny Lawrence (Part 18)
"Finally. I'm actually starting to make progress," thought Johnny as he watched a car drive past him on the open freeway.
He had wanted to make amends with his son for years now, but every time he'd tried, something had gotten in the way (If I'm being honest, I've gotten in the way). The closest they had ever gotten to forming a decent relationship was the day before the school brawl and after that, things just started to get worse between them. Robby went to juvie (thanks to LaRusso) and Johnny fell down a rather dark path. But this time, Robby had come to him for help and there was no way that he going to leave, not again.
I might have messed things up with him in the past, but I'm at least going to do this thing right.
Robby hadn't said anything since they had hit the road a few hours ago.
The silence is seriously killing me.
He chanced a look at Robby while the traffic was slow. Robby held his head propped up on his hand and was staring out the window. His reflection looked tired and his eyes were still red and puffy from when he'd cried earlier.
He doesn't deserve what he's had to go through.
"Is it alright if I turn on the radio?" asked Johnny.
"What? Oh, um yeah, it's fine," answered Robby, turning around for a few seconds to respond before going back to facing the window.
Well, at least he looked at me.
Johnny reached over and turned a few knobs on the center console. The radio played some sappy love song about a man finding his true love.
"C'mon, play some real music," complained Johnny as he angrily changed stations. The second the station swapped channels, the speakers on both sides of the car started blaring with the rough guitar chords of a familiar rock song.
Now, this is music!
Johnny started bobbing his head to the beat of the song.
"It ain't much I'm asking, I heard him say," sang Johnny, smiling.
"Gotta find me a future move out of my way," hummed Robby, quietly.
"You know this song?" asked Johnny.
Of course he knows this song. He is my son, after all.
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure everyone's listened to Queen's music," sighed Robby, shrugging.
"That's what I'm always telling my students!" exclaimed Johnny.
Robby didn't respond, merely half-smiled back at his dad.
"Look, I know we haven't always gotten off to the right start and I know that's mostly my fault but, I'm trying here," explained Johnny, honestly as he lowered the volume on the radio.
"I get it, this is new to me too," added Robby, looking back at his dad.
"That's okay, I can wait. Just know I'm here for you," smiled Johnny.
Robby nodded, thankfully.
We'll get there. I just have to give it time.
