Part 22: A Night Of Firsts; Kenny Payne
Dedicated to @AbbyWatson and @Robby2Keene for their awesome comments!
"C'mon, Kenny, you've got this!" thought Kenny as he rang the Cabreras' doorbell.
It felt like the week since Lia agreed to go on a date with him had gone by excruciatingly slowly, each second seemingly getting longer as the day got closer. Not only was it his first official date with Lia, but it was his first date, well, ever.
I just wish I could ask Robby for help with the whole girl thing, but I'll do fine on my own, too.
Though, even he wasn't sold on that last part considering the fact that he wasn't exactly a ladies' man like the King Cobra.
"Hello, you must be the boy Lia's been talking about so much. Kenny, I think it was," said Mrs. Labrera, warmly as the oak door gently opened to reveal Kenny standing on their pouch, holding a bouquet of sweet-smelling sunflowers.
Despite being styled in an out-dated bob, her hair still seemed to bring out her strong cheekbones as she smiled. Just as Lia's always did when she was happy.
"It's a pleasure to meet you," replied Kenny, shaking her hand, cordially.
"Thank you," Mrs. Cabrera smiled, slightly taken aback by his manners.
"Flattery is the easiest way into a superior's heart," Terry Silver's words rang throughout the young boy's mind.
"Lia, your guest is here!" called Mrs. Cabrera over her shoulder without taking her eyes off Kenny.
He could already tell that despite her kindness, she wasn't the type of parent to be messed with, similar to his own mother.
"Coming!" shouted Lia as she raced over to the door to greet her handsome date.
She was dressed in a bright yellow tunic paired with a baby pink silk skirt that swayed against her lean legs in the afternoon air.
"You look great," complimented Kenny, no other words being able to persevere past his feelings of amazement.
"Thanks, you too," added Lia as she grabbed a purple handbag from the nearby table inside the house.
Their eyes seemed to stay locked for several moments as the two teenagers smiled at one another.
"We should probably get going for the concert now," commented Kenny, shaking his head quickly in an attempt to stop staring.
I gotta play it cool if I want this thing to last for more than one date.
"Yeah, you're right," giggled Lia, her bangs bouncing against her forehead as she spoke.
"Just don't stay out too long!" called Mrs. Cabrera, waving avidly as they walked down the smoothly-paved front driveway of Lia's house.
Kenny could tell that the Cabreras were definitely into gardening due to the grass' freshly mowed smell paired with the occasional tiny trees that sprouted up from the otherwise even ground.
That's probably why she wears so many flower-themed outfits!
Not that he was really complaining because he was guaranteed she would look good in anything she wore.
There was about a thirty minute bike ride before they got to the concert, but Kenny didn't really mind.
It honestly felt good to be just him and Lia, the wind blowing on their smiling faces as they peddled faster, trying to compete for who was the best rider.
This is great but next time, I need to remember to show off skills that are actually important, like karate instead of stupid bike riding.
"Yes! I won!" exclaimed Lia, panting as their bikes skidded to a halt just in front of the concert's open doors.
"Only because I let you win," corrected Kenny, smirking.
People of various ages were practically flooding past them, shoving one another in an attempt to get in first. Kenny didn't quite understand why since their tickets were assigned to select seats, but he knew it'd be something fun to join in with.
If I was with anybody else I would, but Lia's special and I need to treat her that way.
"C'mon, let's go get our seats before there's no good ones left," urged Kenny, politely gesturing for her to go first.
Lia smiled thankfully before walking inside the dorm-like structure.
The whole place reminded Kenny of a fighting area, like the ones they use in MMA matches. The silver walls leaned inward, their surfaces decorated with black and red string lights. Massive speakers were set up on all ends of the room, readily waiting to amplify the singer's already magnificent music. There were multiple rows of seats set up just below the stage, one of which Kenny immediately spotted towards the front of the place.
Only the best seating is good enough for Lia.
"There we go," nodded Kenny as he and Lia sat down in seats at the very front of the crowd.
"And just in time," added Lia, watching as the aforementioned singer walked onto the stage.
They spoke a few quick words before starting the song, though Kenny wasn't really listening that much. He honestly didn't know who the singer was, only that Lia was a big fan of her work.
He had to admit, the first few songs were pretty catchy, he even found himself jumping up and down to the beat with the rest of the crowd.
"Okay, this is the last song of the night and it goes out to all the lovebirds out there, tonight," smiled the singer as the lights dimmed.
"Love song, dancing in the living room.
Like the whole world's spinning 'round' for me and you.
We got red wine, pouring for a party or two.
Just getting lost in the night, mm.
You know I love it when you play your guitar.
When you promise me the moon, sitting under the stars.
I only want to be wherever you are.
'Cause whenever I look in your eyes.
You make my heart beat faster.
You make my heart beat faster.
You make my heart speed when we're close.
So baby, hold me, kiss me slowly.
And make my heart beat faster..."
"Thanks for bringing me here," whispered Lia as she swayed along to the song's slow beat.
"It was nothing," dismissed Kenny, kindly.
Lia turned her head to face him, her smile even brighter under the shining lights.
"No, it was everything," said Lia as their eyes met, just as they had at the Cabreras' house, only this time, Kenny didn't look away.
"C'mon, dance with me," stated Lia, quietly as she took his firm hand in hers.
It felt soothing against his bruised skin.
"You make my heart beat faster.
You make my heart beat faster.
You make my heart speed when we're close.
So baby, hold me, kiss me slowly.
And make my heart beat faster..."
As the lyrics played, Lia gently rested her head on Kenny's shoulder as they danced slowly with one another.
And without warning, Kenny slowly leaned in for a kiss, letting his lips press lightly against hers before releasing.
"I just couldn't resist myself," admitted Kenny, honestly as Lia smiled at him.
"No, it was nice," reassured Lia, returning her head to its resting place on his shoulder.
I'm so glad I joined Cobra Kai or I would never have gotten chances like this.
