Part 20: Last Minute Present; Demetri Alexopoulos

Dedicated to @AbbyWatson4 and @Robby2Keene

"Why can't it just be tomorrow already," thought Demetri impatiently, as he tapped his foot against the science lab's vinyl flooring.

Don't get him wrong, Demetri loved his AP physics class as much as the next nerd, but right now, it was the only thing standing between him and his girlfriend, Yasmine. Oh, how he missed his Yassi-Rose so much (the nickname's a working progress). He hadn't gotten to see her since the spectacular night known as prom where they danced like no one was watching, Yasmine looking even more stunning than usual in her outfit reminiscent of the fabulous Jessica Rabbit.

I still remember those beautiful blonde locks of her hair...

"So, have you decided what you're going to get Yasmine for her birthday?" asked Eli as he leaned over the table residing between them.

Even without words, Eli seemed to be able to practically read his thoughts which happened to be quite convenient considering whenever Demetri did talk, he tended to never stop.

It's both a curse and a blessing to have such linguistic talent.

"Are you crazy? Of course!" whisper-yelled Demetri, laughing nervously.

Eli raised an eyebrow, staring his best friend in the eyes.

"Okay, you got me! I didn't get her any present," admitted Demetri.

"So, on the last birthday you're going to spend together before college, you forgot to get your girlfriend any type of gift?" confirmed Eli.

Even as his friend spoke the words aloud, Demetri knew how bad it sounded, especially since Yasmine was definitely the type of person who'd be hurt if her boyfriend didn't get her a gift.

"Not intentionally, but everything was either not good enough or way over my budget," explained Demetri, throwing his head back in his chair dramatically.

He would have spent every last cent in his pocket if it meant keeping his love happy. Unfortunately, that didn't really consist of very much due to savings towards college.

"Okay, you haven't completely wrecked this yet. We just need to go to the store and pick something up at lunch," stated Eli, firmly.

"I guess, but how is that going to fix my problems?" questioned Demetri, confused.

"Because you might be clueless as to what to get her, although Moon won't be."

Moon! How did I not think to ask her earlier?!

"Great!" exclaimed Demetri, jumping out of his seat in excitement.

Several students on their surrounding sides glanced over at them, interested.

"Sorry," apologized Demetri sheepishly, before sinking back down in his chair.

The teacher stared back at them with a look of disappointment before returning her attention to her black chalkboard that hung at the front of the classroom.

"I have a feeling we're going to need to do some extra credit work after this test," commented Eli, jokingly.

The second the school bell rang, Demetri ran out the entrance doors so quickly that he practically drug Eli down the entirety of the school halls and out the door, where they saw Moon chatting with a friend (probably didn't recognize her because she's popular) on a bench just outside the school.

"Hey, Moon, can I steal you for a minute?" asked Eli, politely.

"Of course you can," interjected her friend as she nudged Moon towards her boyfriend, knowingly.

Moon and Eli both smiled awkwardly at one another.

I'm all for the budding romance of two young hearts in love and all, but I really wish these two could go five seconds without making googly eyes at each other. At least until we fix my relationship, that is.

The girl shot one last grin at Moon before heading back through the open front doors.

"What was all that about?" asked Eli as the three of them slowly walked around the school.

"She just reads too much into the school gossip," replied Moon, barely able to suppress a laugh.

A sudden rush of eagerness flooded over Demetri's body, making his hands shake.

There's gossip being passed around about us? And not just insults? Wait, that doesn't matter because now is the time to mend my relationship," he told himself firmly. Though, the idea still lingered silently in the back of his mind.

The air smelled fresh as blooming daisies lined their way. The sun's rays were vibrant yellow as they shone down on the three of their heads. Surprisingly, there were very few students mingling outside, the only ones consisting of fellow classmates with their visions shrouded by large, end-of-term school books . What most found as comforts of summertime, Demetri barely took much notice of. Summer had always been the season where he and Eli tended to just stay home and watch movies or play video games. Well, at least they did when they were kids.

We'll obviously still do that once we're older too, right?

But he couldn't even answer his own question confidently.

He felt the sudden urge to reignite the conversation with his friends.

"So, Moon, I was really hoping you could help me with something involving Yasmine's birthday?" asked Demetri hopefully.

"I'd love to. What is it?" responded Moon, her voice carrying its usual optimism.

"I need to get her a birthday present that displays not only my wit, but also how incredible she is. At first I was thinking about this authentic Leia Organa gown from the New Hope," explained Demetri, enthusiastically.

"Well, um..."

How could she not want an authentic gown worn by the one and only Carrie Fisher?!

"Yeah, I think this just proves why we need your help," finished Eli as he patted his friend on the back.

"Basically, yes," agreed Demetri.

They walked in silence for a few minutes, their minds slowly filling with various gift ideas.

"What if you got her something at a thrift store? They tend to have good clothing and are cheap," suggested Eli.

"I am one-hundred percent sure she'd be able to tell the difference," stated Demetri, throwing his arms outward.

I'll never forget the fateful day when I tried giving her that candy ring instead of the silver ring she specifically asked for ...

"I think Demetri's right, although I did think of another idea," said Moon gently.

"I'm honestly open to anything at this point," sighed Demetri as he kicked a small stone off the path.

But before she could respond, they heard Kyler and his fellow Cobras talking excitedly. The three of them paused all conversation and stepped a little closer to the others, making sure to conceal themselves from sight behind a parked jeep.

I know we probably shouldn't be doing this, but I just can't help myself.

"I can't believe Keene is just ditchin us like every night or somethin," protested Kyler, slapping his friend on the shoulder, playfully.

"Did he just say that Ronby's been ditching Cobra Kai?" confirmed Demetri incredulously.

Maybe he isn't as happy with his swap as we first thought...

"Shhhh!" scolded Eli.

"And it took you a week to figure that out?" remarked Tory, sarcastically as she rolled her eyes.

Rambunctious laughter filled the afternoon air.

"What amazes me more is still how Sensei Silver is taking us out to dinner tomorrow," said Piper.

"Yeah, me too. I just wish it wasn't, today," admitted Kenny, half-hearted.

"Why does that matter?" asked Kyler.

"Just because this girl I like, Lia, finally agreed to go out with me and of course, it's happening tonight," explained Kenny, agitatedly.

"I don't think this is really our business to listen to," said Moon, backing away from the jeep.

He most definitely did not tell her about our break-in of the dojo then.

"I know," conceded Demetri, disappointedly.

It wasn't that he wanted to eavesdrop, but he didn't want to be forced into a confrontation without a good reason.

They heard the distinct chiming noise of the school bell blaring like a siren call to action.

"I gotta go, but I'll text you my idea after class," called Moon, waving as she ran back into the school.

"Well, at least we know what we have to figure out next," reasoned Eli.

"What do you mean? We barely heard anything, except just that Kenny Payne has a girlfriend which I have to say is kinda offensive. Especially considering I didn't even go on my first date until high school and two weeks into high school, he already has a girlfriend."

But then again, I am Me.

"We have to ask the others what's going on with Robby," stated Eli, fierce determination covering his face.

"We are seriously going to die before college, aren't we?" thought Demetri aloud as he followed Eli down the street.
