Prologue

Darkness. 

That's all she saw now. Darkness, layered on more darkness, sprinked with a generous amount of more darkness.

The only think that wasn't black was the sky, blood red, darkened by the absence of a moon or stars. All around, a vast expanse of black, dead plants and, far in the distance, jutting rock that no one had ever really  gone to. 

She'd learned a long time ago that hunting for food was a fruitless exersise. There was no prey here. Ever. 

The air was still and stale, the charcoal flora never moved. Nothing happened in that still expanse. Once or twice, she'd come across other wandering souls that were unfortunate enough to cross paths with her, and once or twice, she'd feel alive with their soul running through her claws. 

Something moved. 

Things weren't supposed to move here. But it did. It stirred the long grass. 

The cat went into a crouch. Can't risk being spotted. That would be devastating. She watched the movement, unconsiously sweeping her tounge over her lips. Just a little closer...

She pounced, her claws gripping flesh beneath her. She felt the other cat move, rolling onto its back, and flung herself off, rounding for another attack. 

The other cat, a broad-shouldered grey tom with tattered wings and jutting fangs, braced himself and, as she leapt again, charged into her chest, knocking her over. She gripped his neck in her teeth, feeling them both roll backwards in the struggle. 

And then...

Plunge down into the hole that neither saw...
