Hate Your Hometown

Then next morning Loretta woke up to an unfamiliar warmth. Colt was still fast asleep in her bed. She turned and kissed his nose and arose to her feet. Ammo was asleep in the floor and only awoke as Loretta got out of bed.

She put on her jeans and a red shirt that read "go ahead basshole make my day" with the picture of a bigmouth bass on it. She walked down stairs and made eggs and toast for herself, Colt, and Ammo.

As the gravy was almost complete, Loretta could hear Colt get out of bed over head.

He walked down the stairs in his jeans but no shirt. He walked up behind Loretta and hugged her.

"Good mornin," she smiled.

"Yeah, that corn whiskey has gave me a serious headache," he laughed.

Loretta began to think maybe that was why last night had happened. That it was all cause of the moonshine. Colt began to sense this and looked at Loretta with gentle loving eyes.

"I meant 'er'thing  I said last night Lori, I love you. Come with me let me get you outta this town. 'Ere ain't noting 'ere for us," Colt said. The two sat down to eat.

"Colt, I'd love to be with you but I can't leave. What about all the memories and good people in this town? It's home Colt. I don't wanna run like my brothers and sister did. Somebody's gotta stay and take care of the farm. It was Daddy's, before that Papaw's, and before that Great Granny's... I just can't leave." Loretta said tears in her eyes. Ammo laid his head on Loretta's lap and she petted him for comfort.

"The good people left this town with the coal company. After that this town went to shit. Full of meth dealers and broken dreams. We can start new memories some'ere else. Your bout the only thang keepin me 'ere," Colt pleaded. "Think what y'daddy would want for ya."

That sentence broke Loretta down she started crying more than she had since it happened. Colt got up and hug her tight, "I'm sorry, I love you and I wanna see you happy but 'is town was fucked over by the coal company and won't ever be the same. The government sure as hell ain't gonna help us cause we're coal miners blood."

"I know 'at. But I don't wanna live in a city." Loretta tried to be open minded cause at this rate she'd loose the farm anyway.

"Make you a deal if we can save the land from the bank and prove to the police you can look live on your own I'll stay 'ere with you and will raise some youngins and have a family, but if somein happens we head south , no cities, but some'ere we can make somein of ourselves," Colt negotiated.

Loretta shook her head and said, "deal, but 'ight now, I got chores to do."

"I'll help," Colt smiled. "If I'm gonna live 'ere I gotta do chores."

The two walked outside with hoodies and Ammo close behind.

They fed the hogs and walked to the chicken coop. The light was burning bright in the hen house, they got the eggs, and as the two walked back an eight point buck grazed in the field.

"Deer is some of the best meat in the world," Colt said.

"We ate like royalty during deer season," Loretta smiled.

"Yeah," Colt laughed grabbing Loretta's hand.

"I was thinking ham, cornbread, and green beans for dinner. Wanna join us?" Loretta asked.

"What bout Rooster and Gil they can't stand me," Colt asked.

"It ain't that they don't like you their protective, I am their baby sister," Loretta smiled. "I ain't gonna let em do notin to ya."

"I'll let my momma know where I'll be." Colt pulled out his cell phone and somehow managed to get signal.
