Prologue
Lillian's P.O.V.
"Are you sure it's such a good idea to be having this party tonight? We leave for college tomorrow morning."
Kelsey nodded, ripping a bag of tortilla chips open and pouring them into a bowl. She'd been adamant that we needed to have one last "hoo-ra" with all our high school friends before all going our separate ways. I personally thought that the past four adventures that we went on to different amusement parks and hiking trails was efficient but Kelsey thought otherwise.
"I know, I know. You think that I'm being over the top with this party, but I really am going to miss everything about this town. I want my last night here to be spent having fun with my closest friends from high school."
I smiled, taking pity on Kelsey. She was clearly having a harder time grasping that she wouldn't be back in this small town for several months. Unlike me, who was over the moon excited to have the freedom of responsibility to handle my life, Kelsey was dreading having all the adult responsibilities that came with college.
"I get it." Being her best friend, I knew that she was counting on me to help her. So, I took a seat on one of the stools in her overly large kitchen and grabbed a bag of chips to open. "So when do people start arriving again, and what are your plans exactly?"
Kelsey smiled, handing me a bowl. "People arrive at three, so we have about two hours to get everything set. But other than getting food ready and outside, we don't have a whole lot left to do. The pool is set and we have everything we need for a bon fire. Plus, my dad is out of town for the weekend so we won't be bothered."
All the pool parties that Kelsey had done over the past few years have all ended in a campfire, and every party had always been a blast. Since Mr. Olson was an ex-NFL star, he had a gorgeous house that was just short of a mansion. Although I'd never dared to ask the financial situation of her parents, I knew it was safe to say that her dad was loaded.
"It sounds like tonight will be tons of fun then, as usual." I picked up a chip from the bowl I'd just filled and plopped it into my mouth before asking how many, and exactly who, she'd invited to her party.
Kelsey glared at me for stealing a chip, grumpily answering, "Just the usual's. Austin, Blair, Katie, Seth, Savannah, Matt etc."
I held my hands up jokingly, "Hey now, no need to get upset with me for stealing a single chip before the party. I mean I am helping you get ready for it."
"I'm allowed to get mad at you, I am the one who bought them after all," she challenged. When I smirked and opened my mouth to respond, she cut me off, "Why did I choose you to help me?"
I grinned, "Because I am your best, and only friend, that wanted to help."
Kelsey rolled her eyes; accepting that I was right. She grabbed a new bowl and filled it with some more chips before turning her attention to me with a grin. "Is Ben coming tonight?"
"He is actually," I said with a smile, "both him and Dylan."
Ben was my boyfriend of a year. He was one of Dylan's top receivers who he'd introduced me to at a small bonfire his family had put on for the end of his high school football career. Ben and I were just good friends for the first few months, and he asked me to his prom that spring and we'd been dating ever since.
"Wait, Dylan is coming? I thought he was in Ohio?"
I shook my head. Dylan had been in Ohio visiting with his cousin but had gotten home a few days ago. I would have thought that Kelsey would have been aware of this considering he's her brother. "He was, but he got in a few days ago." Grabbing a bowl to pour some more chips into, I asked, "Don't you ever communicate with your brother?"
She shrugged. "We talked this morning but I didn't care to ask where he was."
I grinned, rolling my eyes at her thoughtfulness. Her tone indicated just how irrelevant of an idea she felt asking him about his trip was.
"Anyways, Ben should be here about two, if that's okay?"
Kelsey nodded, "Yeah, totally fine. It'll be good to have some extra hands to carry all of this food outside."
I smirked. With the amount of food that Kelsey had to move outside, I was happy with my decision to invite him to come early; we really needed the help.
--
"Hey Ben, would you mind grabbing me a soda please?" I asked sweetly, leaning up on the tip of my toes to give him a gentle kiss on his cheek. The party was in full swing now with all the guests chatting and eating all the food Kelsey and I spent the past few hours preparing.
He smiled, "The usual?"
I grinned, nodding my head like a child who always got their way. "Nothing better."
"One root beer coming right up."
Ben slid his hand out of my own, turned, and started his way over in the direction of the drink cooler. I smiled to myself as I watched him walk away, wondering how in the world I'd gotten so lucky to find a guy like Ben.
Two years ago I'd thought that I'd managed to find myself the perfect guy who I was actually in love with, but the truth was that it wasn't love. I was just so wrapped up in the idea of what I'd seen in movies that I got so wrapped up in dating the school's cutest and most popular guy who just happened to be Luke.
Looking back at my relationship with Luke, it just wasn't real. We may have shared many kisses, and hugs, we held hands, and I went to all his games, but we didn't really have a relationship. There was no friendship. We actually had very little in common.
It wasn't love, just infatuation.
"Hey Faye, long time no see." Dylan's familiar cheeky voice pulled me from my thoughts. A large smile pulled from the corners of my lips as I spun around to give him a hug.
"Too long," I huffed, my arms squeezing him a little tighter. It'd been a few months since the last time I'd seen him, and honestly, I really missed my best friend. "You should really visit your mom more often, neighbor."
Dylan pulled away from the hug and smirked, showing off his smile that I missed seeing. "Maybe I will now that you will be off at college."
Rolling my eyes, I turned to see Ben walking back over with my drink. "Thanks babe." I leaned up to give Ben a quick peck on the lips before taking my soda from his hands.
Ben's attention switched off of me to Dylan, the two of them greeted each other with the iconic boy hug that I'd always thought was done in just movies until actually attending high school.
"How have you been? The last time I saw you I was setting the two of you up," Dylan asked Ben before grinning cockily and adding, "Which shows that I am a good match maker."
I smiled, grabbing Ben's hand.
"I've been good. Football this year wasn't the same without you as QB but we expected as much."
Dylan smiled, "Maybe it wasn't as much the lack of me as QB as it was the lack of you catching footballs in the end zone." I bit my lip to stop myself from laughing at Dylan's unexpected teasing. Him and Ben were good friends, but that comment had to have stung a little for Ben. "You never could catch when needed."
Ben laughed, not even at all phased like I was expecting him to be. "As if. You and I both know that I caught just about all of your end zone passes."
It was good to see my boyfriend and best friend were just as good of friends as they were when Ben and I first met. I don't know why, but I wouldn't feel right dating someone that Dylan didn't like. His opinion shouldn't really affect my decision of who I do and don't like, but it did.
"I think I'm going to let you two catch up while I go find Kelsey," I said, breaking up their friendly banter. Ben nodded, as I slid my hand out of his; venturing off in the direction of the pool.
I found Kelsey sitting by herself on the side of her pool, her feet hanging in the water. She looked like she was lost in thought. "Is everything okay there? Everyone looks like they are having a good time except for you."
Kelsey jumped slightly as if I'd just pulled her back into reality. She quickly recovered from her jump and nodded, taking a deep breath. "Everything is fine, just thinking. I got a message from Austin and he can't come anymore. Something about having to pack for school."
I frowned. It was hard for me to picture that Austin would rather be packing for school than be at a pool party with his girlfriend. I took a seat next to Kelsey, putting my feet into the pool. "Is everything okay between the two of you?"
"Of course,"she answered quickly as if she'd be anticipating that I was going to ask her that. "Why wouldn't it be?"
I shrugged. "It was just a question." I knew that there was more to the two of them than she wanted to tell me, but I let it go. Jumping to my feet, I grabbed Kelsey by her arm and pulled her to her feet, making my way over to Dylan and Ben. "Come on."
"What are you doing?" Kelsey asked. Ignoring her, I grinned at the two boys who had just noticed Kelsey and I were headed in their direction.
Dylan quirked an eyebrow. "What are you two up to?"
"Nothing, Kelsey is just feeling a bit bummed because Austin can no longer make it and I thought we could play a game to get her mind off of it."
Kelsey bit her lip, "It's not that Austin can't make it."
I rolled my eyes. She was trying to make up excuses for him but I knew better than that. There was something going on between them and she made it clear that she wasn't ready to tell me. I was okay with that but I didn't want her making up excuses either.
"Well he isn't here," I said quietly, trying my best to not sound rude. "I'm just trying to help you get your mind off of him because you clearly aren't having fun like you should be."
Kelsey sighed, caving in. "Fine, what do you have in mind?"
I smirked, my eyes flickered onto Dylan and Ben. "We are going to play a couple rounds of chicken."
Ben raised his eyebrows. "When did Dylan and I agree to this?"
"Oh come on," Dylan smirked, "it'll be fun." There was a competitive edge to his tone that suddenly made me wish I was on his team rather than my own boyfriend's.
"Please," I pleaded, grabbing onto Ben's arm and giving him the puppy dog lips. "Do it for me?"
He sighed, rolling his eyes ever so slightly. "Okay fine, I'll do it."
Kelsey smiled, "Great. This should be fun."
I smiled. After today it would be weeks maybe even months before I'd see anything of these same faces. Within that moment it made me feel extremely grateful for Kelsey putting on this party for me to have one last get together with all my high school friends.
College was right around the corner and I was about to have to take it on without any of my current friends.
