Chapter 5
A bowl dropped in front of Clyde and the smell made his nose twitch in eagerness. He was so hungry: he hadn't eaten in almost a day. Everyone except Lucifer and Clyde stood up, the loud sound of chairs filling the hall they were in. Lucifer and Clyde quickly caught on, scrambling up so they were standing too.
"Cheers to havin' these heroes with us! They're gonna save us from this hell and make the world a better place again! For Lucifer and Clyde!" Edwin yelled and his words were followed by a loud cheer and the clang of multiple glasses. "Enjoy the meal!"
Everyone sat down and began to eat their meals.
-
"You boys can sleep 'ere. It may not be the fanciest place in the world but it will 'ave to do. I'll wake you up early for breakfast." Edwin said, gesturing to the two sleeping bags on the floor of the room. Lucifer and Clyde nodded, thanking the man.
They climbed into their 'beds' and uttered a few quick goodnights. After a couple of moments, Clyde could hear Lucifer's soft snores. It made him wish he could fall asleep but, sadly, too much was on his mind.
He stared up at the dull ceiling with wide, sad eyes.
He knew that he and Lucifer couldn't save the world, he just didn't want to admit it. The people were relying on him... he couldn't just let them down like that.
A couple of hours must have passed as Clyde just stared blankly up at the ceiling. Lucifer turned over in his bed and whispered something. "Clyde.. Are you awake?"
"Yeah." Clyde choked out. His voice was surprisingly shaky and it sounded like he had been crying. He brought a hand up to his face and it met with something wet. Apparently he had been crying, he just hadn't quite realised it.
"Are you okay?"
Clyde couldn't exactly lie, considering the fact that he had been crying was evident in his voice so he uttered, "No, not really."
"Oh," Lucifer replied, unsure of how to comfort the boy. "What's up?"
"We can't save this world. We're two boys, we're weak, stupid and unfit. We can't do this and we're going to let everyone down."
"I know but we can at least try. We can't give up without giving it a go, can we? That would make us look like we don't care. When really we care a lot or, at least, I do. I don't want to give up without a fight."
"But what is there that we can do? Other than our stupid powers, there's nothing that puts us at an advantage." Unknowingly, a tear slipped down Clyde's face.
Lucifer didn't respond for a bit. Clyde actually believed he had fallen back into the safety of sleep until he muttered something so quietly that Clyde had to strain to hear it.
"What if it's our only hope of getting home?"
Clyde sighed, slipping out of his sleeping bag.
"Where are you going?" Clyde didn't reply, he just silently slipped on his shoes and opened up the door of the room. "Clyde?" Clyde heard some rustling as Lucifer stood up.
"Don't follow me." He muttered before walking out of the room at the quickest pace. He rushed out of the house and, despite not knowing where he was heading, he walked forwards.
Around ten minutes later, he was violently shivering and his fingertips were tinting with a light blue. His breath was becoming a mist and his lips were freezing. His whole body was numb but still, he walked forward. There was a tiny puddle of water and, as Clyde stepped into it, it stiffened into ice.
Tears were falling down his cheeks but, as soon as they fell, they froze.
Clyde was cold and sad and he wasn't in control of his powers. Everything was freezing and he just couldn't stop it.
He leant back against a tree, his vision blurry. As soon as his back came in contact with the bark, it became cold.
Clyde couldn't stop crying.
-
Lucifer pulled on his shoes after Clyde had stormed off. He was ready to follow him and help him feel better. Clyde was obviously in a state and he needed a friend to make him feel better. Lucifer ran out the door, aware his friend would be walking at a quick speed.
He rushed forward, his feet becoming blurs due to his quick pace. About ten seconds later, he could smell burning. It was coming from his hands. Black waves of smoke was exhaling out of his hands; there was so much of it that Lucifer was struggling to see the path in front of him. Stepping into the blackness, he realised his hand was alight. Flashes of red and yellow mixed together as he lifted his hand up to his face. It was on fire.
Lucifer shakily swallowed, closing his eyes and urging it away. It wouldn't go though. An exhilaration of heat ran through his bones and he couldn't stop it.
If only Clyde was with him. Clyde's cold hands would cool down his fire.
Lucifer fought through the smoke and the heat until he saw a frail boy sitting against a tree, his hands wrapped around himself. "Clyde!" Lucifer yelled running towards his friend.
Icicles were forming in the strangest places and his skin was blue. Lucifer grabbed both of Clyde's hands, closed his eyes and focused all of his energy in his friend's hands. Lucifer was shaking, the flames on his hands wavering as they met the ice of Clyde's hands.
"Is this my fault?" Clyde mumbled, making Lucifer jump. He didn't even know his friend was conscious so it was a surprise to hear his soft voice. Lucifer jumped back, disconnecting their hands.
"No, not at all." Lucifer's hands were now a perfect temperature as flames weren't anywhere in sight.
"I couldn't control my powers and I just got really cold. I was so upset and-" Clyde choked out a small sob so Lucifer hesitantly dropped back down beside his friend and wrapped a loose arm around him.
"It happened to me too. My powers went crazy and my hands set on fire."
"Was it my fault..?" Lucifer shook his head and Clyde turned, burying his head into his friend's shoulder.
"No. If it was something to do with your emotions or... whatever... I wouldn't have had it too."
"What was it then?"
"I.. don't know. We can ask Edwin tomorrow." Lucifer briskly stood up before holding out a hand and pulling Clyde up too. "We both need to get some sleep."
Despite not liking the idea of sleep, Clyde nodded with a timid smile.
"Clyde was upset so he stormed out of the house," Lucifer turned to Clyde who nodded. "Both of our powers went out of control. My hands were on fire and when I found Clyde, he was almost completely frozen. It was scary."
"It's because you were split up. Fire and water balance each other out so, when apart, they spiral out of control. Didn't you know that?" Edwin said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Wait... so we always have to be together?" Clyde asked, raising a curious eyebrow.
"Kind of. You don't always 'ave to be right next to each other. You can be a certain amount of metres away from each other."
"How many metres exactly?"
Edwin shrugged. "How am I supposed to know?"
I CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO CHECK THIS FOR MISTAKES BUT HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!
