Chapter 3

Is anyone actually reading this?

"Hello?" Clyde yelled loudly, his voice raspy from already shouting a dozen times. No one was responding but he refused to give up hope. Something in his stomach was motivating him not to stop- that someone was out there.. he just wasn't shouting loud enough. "Somebody?!"

Just as Clyde was about to drop down onto his knees, his hope completely gone, a voice, equally as desperate, yelled back. "Is someone there?" He broke out into a grin and started to run towards the voice.

The length of the hill was large and Clyde's voice wasn't very loud so it had taken a long time for the other person to hear his voice.

As soon as their eyes met, they both gasped.

"Lucifer?" Clyde gasped just as Lucifer said his name. "Is this a dream?"

Lucifer shook his head, biting his lip. "I don't think so. Considering we can feel emotions and touch things and everything."

"What's going on?"

Clyde examined Lucifer for a second, his shock passing as he realised Lucifer's different appearance. His blonde hair was now a dark red and, just like Clyde, he was wearing a spandex suit. His was red with a large flame etched into his chest.

"I don't know." Lucifer muttered, pulling Clyde out of his bubble of thoughts.

"Has anything.. weird happened to you?"

"Like what? I woke up in a weird place I have never seen before in my life if that's what you mean by weird."

"Well, this is going to sound strange but, trust me, it happened. I was touching water from a stream and it completely turned into ice. I didn't do anything but touch it."

"No.. nothing happened."

"I have some reason to believe that this relates to our costumes.. Mine has a water droplet on it and I can freeze water.. you might be able to.. I don't know.. heat things up?"

"No way. That's impossible. It defies everything I've learnt." Lucifer groaned, biting his lip.

"There's only one way we can check if you have.. powers like mine-"

"You could be talking rubbish for all I-"

"We have to test them."

Lucifer and Clyde walked in silence until they stumbled upon a stream. The same stream Clyde had drunk from on the journey to the peak of the hill. "Look." Clyde mumbled, cupping the water with his hand. Lucifer watched in awe as the water completely froze over until it was a block of ice.

"That's-" Lucifer started but he cut himself off as curiosity took over. He looked down at the ice that Clyde was holding and held his hands against it. He closed his eyes and soon he felt steam hit against his face and heard Clyde gasp, the ice melting and dropping back into the stream as liquid.

Lucifer opened his eyes again and just burst out laughing. "This is so stupid." He chuckled, wrapping his arms around himself as he barked with laughter. "This must be a dream. This doesn't happen in real life- only in books."

"I know." Clyde responded but he wasn't laughing. He didn't even have the inner strength to conjure up a fake laugh. After a moment, as Lucifer's laughter died down, Clyde let out a gentle sigh. "What are we going to do?"

"Well, think logically..." Lucifer swerved around, fixing his eyes on the large building. They both recognised it to be the source of the emitted light that was seen from the forest. "Maybe we should look in there." It was just a ten minute walk from where they were standing so it wouldn't be much of a trek.

After walking for about five minutes in total silence, Clyde spoke up. "I'm scared."

If it was any normal day, Lucifer would have laughed and called Clyde a wimp but he just admitted something back. "Me too."

They reached the tower quicker than either of them had hoped. Up close, it looked huge. Neither Lucifer or Clyde could see the top of the building. "You can go first." Lucifer mumbled, watching closely as Clyde walked over to the big double doors that lead you inside the building.

He inhaled a deep breath and shoved the two doors open. They made a loud, creaking noise which was so high-pitched that the ground beneath their feet began to shake a little bit.

The boys stepped inside the building to be met with an empty room. The only light source was a small light bulb hanging off of the low roof. The room was dusty and dark, like it hadn't been entered in months. There were shelves and shelves of old books, all in some foreign language that neither Lucifer or Clyde recognised and there was a round table in the centre of the room. Clyde walked towards the wooden table and noticed a single piece of paper which had been written on.

The scrawl looked like someone didn't have much time to write it and, despite nothing in the room being in English, was written in the recognisable language.

Help us. Please.

There are people invading our town and they're taking away everything. Everyone is evacuating or giving in like there's no hope. I want to give up too but there's a part of me saying that there's someone out there. Someone to save us.

My own home has been trashed and my family are gone. They took them away. They took away my friends too. I've escaped but I don't know how long I'll last on my own before they find me.

I hear people coming so I have to go.

Please.. save us. I don't care if you don't help me but help my town.. please.

The letter wasn't signed, proof that the writer was in a hurry. The person sounded so desperate and afraid that Clyde's heart was hurting. He dropped the letter back onto the dusty table and turned to Lucifer. "We need to save the town."

"How-" Lucifer tried to ask but Clyde cut him off with the shake of his head.

"I don't know but we have to."

"We need to look after ourselves first, Clyde. It's getting dark so we need to find somewhere to stay and we haven't eaten."

Clyde sighed, nodding. His stomach rumbled at the mention of food.

"We can stay in one of the caves. I spotted one or two on the way here. For food, we can.. I don't know."

"Looks like we'll have to survive then." Lucifer nodded before exiting the tower again. He guided Clyde down the rocky path until they met a large cave. The inside was cushioned with grass and the top was filled with beautiful, glistening rocks that were amazing to look at. "It's pretty... not sure about comfy though."

"It will have to do, Clyde. We don't have many options.."

Clyde grumbled something incoherent before dropping down onto the grass.

The night dragged out. Neither Clyde nor Lucifer had slept at all throughout it and they didn't start a conversation either. Silence seemed appropriate for the situation.

When the sun began to shine into the cave, Lucifer grunted, covering his eyes with his hand.

"We should walk some more. There's bound to be something near." Clyde said, standing up. Lucifer didn't have the energy to conjure up a reply so he just stood up too. "What direction did you come up the hill again?"

"The opposite to you." Clyde nodded, walking forward and getting his bearings.

"Let's walk this way." He unknowingly pointed north and they set forward on their journey.

I know it's not Sunday but ehhhh
