A Big Leap

Ava sped biked the whole way home. When she arrived at her big, pale yellow house, she jumped off her bike, ran up to the door, and opened and shut it with a bang.

" Hi, honey." Ava's mom said as Ava walked in the kitchen.

" Oooh, what are you making?" Ava asked, peering over the bowl her mother was mixing.

" Chocolate cake. You were gone long. School project?" Her mother asked, pulling away the bowl before Ava could reach in to take a taste.

Ava sighed. She would have to tell her parents some time. It was best to do it now.

" No," She said heavily, and pulled the locket and photo out of her pocket. With her mother wearing an queer expression on her face, and Ava talking super fast, she explained everything. From the locket being discovered in her locker, to going to the library, and last of all, that Liam had told her that this was actually Abigail Adam's locket.

" Honey......." Her mother trailed off and her eyes drifted to the bowl of chocolate cake mix. " I don't think you should be involved in this. I mean, what if some others are after this locket too? And there's not explination how it got in your locker unless someone deliberatly wants you to get in trouble. We should just take the locket to the museum, someone will take care of it there."

" No!" Ava yelled. " I'm not a baby anymore, I can take care of myself and solve this mystery. This locket and photo belongs to someone who I'm sure really wants it back, and I HAVE to find out who owns it!! Don't you understand??? I have friends who can help me and I'm not going to get hurt!! Nobody even wants this locket so....." Suddenly she remembered the warning on the back of the photo.

After she had been silent for a few minutes, her mother leaned over and put her arms around Ava's shoulders. " There's something you're not telling me, am I correct?" She asked.

Ava nodded and showed her the warning. She watched as her mother held the photo and her eyebrows raised as she read the warning.

" Ava....." Mrs.Fitzgearald began, but Ava cut her off.

" It's not like they are going to kill me. I am fourteen, after all."

" Which just proves you are too young to solve such a mystery!" Her mother insisted.

Ava groaned. " Mom, this is my big chance!! Nancy Drew wasn't much older when she started solving mysteries!!"

" She is a fictional, made up character." Mrs. Fitzgearald snapped.

" And this is ABIGAIL ADAM'S locket!" Ava wailed in desperation. " She's REAL!!!! But dead. And I know she would want me to do the right thing, which is find the owner of the locket. Please Mom!"

Her mother sighed. " Fine. But at least TRY not to get in trouble. And don't killed."

Ava smiled. " Of course not, mom. I will succeed and the name Ava Fitzgearald will forever reign!"

Mrs. Fitzgearald laughed. " Yes, Ma'am. Now, do you want to help me bake this cake?"

Ava nodded eagerly and the two laughed will making the cake.

Both were unaware that there was a head peeking in the window. The 'men that seek you' were real.
