014| WHEN HELP COMES UNEXPECTEDLY

~K O M I S O L A~

"See ehn," Senior Inaya started once we had taken our seats. "All those people are idiots. Don't mind them, they're very stupid. You shouldn't let them walk all over you like that."

My heart rate increased.

"You heard?"

Of course she did.

But...

Senior Inaya didn't know about me.

If anything, I was the girl who ran ten laps on our track field, nothing else.

How did she know...?

The Music Room.

I paled in realization.

Of course.

Of course she did.

She must've probably found out everything about me and now...

She was supporting me?

Why?

"You're scaring her,"

I turned to the calm voice that had disrupted my thoughts and commanded all the attention. Senior Amir had an amused smile on his face as he glanced occasionally between I and Senior Inaya.

When he focused on me, I shifted under his piercing gaze.

"Inaya's actually right. You shouldn't let them walk all over you like that. Just shows that you're being weak." He said the last part with a shrug.

"Amir," Senior Inaya chided him.

"I'm saying the truth, what?" Senior Amir smirked.

I looked away. Out to the window and kept looking because the clouds were not grey today.

Clearing of throat could be heard.

"I am not trying to be mean, Komisola. Look at me."

I gave in because the person speaking was my senior. Senior Amir had a soft smile on his face.

"What are all the textbooks for?"

"I have an English assignment," I answered almost instantly.

"Amir's an English major, he could help you." Senior Inaya grinned at me.

"All these words you're putting into my mouth, Inaya. You owe me one." His words might have come off as harsh, but Senior Amir sounded like he was teasing. The smile that remained on his face proved it.

He turned to me, "What's the assignment about?"

"An 8000 word essay on an argument about money being better than education. You get to choose a side."

Why were my answers quick?

Oh, because he was scrutinizing me under his gaze.

As uneasy as I felt, I didn't want to make it obvious because I think he already noticed it.

My paranoia.

That day in the Music Room, when he held me, he must've noticed my fear.

He did.

"Did you hear me?"

"Uh?"

Had he been talking?

"I said, which side are you choosing?"

"Oh," I swallowed. "I'm on the opposing side."

"Money is not better than education?" Senior Amir quirked his brow. "Just as I expected, let's start then."

And just like that, I spent a whole period with my two seniors. And I also finished my English assignment with the help of Senior Amir, who analyzed my points, provided me more points and all in all, truly helped me.

"Now, turn in your assignment everyone." Miss Eva instructed to us.

Everyone stood up and one by one, we all placed our notes each on top of the previously submitted. I was about placing my note too but it was at the same time with Hanniel. I glanced down at his note and saw the name Hanniel Alonge lazily sprawled across the brown paper that covered the whole note.

Not today.

I slowly looked up at him, there wasn't any grin on his face this time. Instead, a not so subtle frown directed at me was there.

"Are you okay?" He mouthed to me. We hadn't submitted our notes.

I looked away like the coward that I was and hurriedly submitted my note, turning around and heading back to my seat.

"Okay class, I'll be going to mark your assignment now! So sit and don't make noise! Principal Matthews is on the watch for noisemakers this term so... Bye!"

We waited for Miss Eva to exit the class and immediately she did, the class burst into uncontrollable noise.

I stood up. I couldn't stay here.

I had no choice but to go to the Leisure Room.

After arranging my books, carrying my backpack and standing up, I was about leaving when Dabirah Oluwa purposely stretched out her leg to trip me.

With a fake yawn.

I tripped. Hard.

"Hey," Someone caught me. "Dabi, what's this? Why the fuck would you do that?"

That voice belonged to Hanniel.

I looked at him, he had an angry expression on his face and a glare at Dabirah.

"She was in my way."

Dabirah sounded so nonchalant about it, I had to turn to look at her and she was giving a lazy shrug.

"In your way?" Hanniel sounded like he was in disbelief. A scoff followed. "C'mon, don't tell me you were serious."

The look on Dabirah's face hardened and both she and Hanniel seemed to communicate with their eyes.

Then, I noticed...

Hanniel was holding me.

Again.

I moved away from him, sharply enough to startle him but he didn't look confused as I thought he would.

Instead, he looked disappointed... Sad in a way.

And I finally decided to say it.

"Thank you."

I left as soon as I said that.

"What the fuck, Hanniel! Why would you help her?! She's a damn outcast at CH! General Overseer's daughter, my foot!"

All that I heard while being at the corridor.

And as much as my eyes welled up at the mention of Father, the tears refused to spill.

I was tired of crying.

I was.

I truly was.

The door to the Leisure Room gently creaked open.

I knew I would regret coming here.

I turned to my right to see who was at the door. It revealed Hanniel.

My breath hitched.

"Hey," he started slowly as he walked closer to where I was. "Um... I was looking for you and I just thought you would..." He awkwardly scratched his hair.

"Why would you look for me?"

And of course, I came off as cold.

"I'm sorry for what Dabirah did,"

I tried my best to ignore his poor pronunciation of her name.

"She wasn't supposed to do that."

We both stared at each other for a while, enveloped in awkward and tense silence.

"Okay." I finally said.

He walked backwards but stopped when he had gotten to the door. "I don't know you. But I want to. I know I have said that before. The only way I try to comfort you without knowing your problems is by smiling at you always. So please..."

I repeated his words in my head.

The only way I try to comfort you without knowing your problems is by smiling. So please...

"Don't shut me out."
