Chapter 20
"Why did it take you so long to answer the door, Audrey?" Frank asked annoyed.
"I was about to get into the shower, Frank. I had to put my clothes back on."
"Why?" he smirked. "Nothing I haven't seen before." Frank continued as he pressed Audrey against the now closed door and began kissing her. "In fact..." he said between kisses, "It would have been a very nice welcome."
When Frank finally pulled away, Audrey took in a deep breath. She was nervous that Ringo was in her flat. She only hoped he would keep his promise of staying out of sight. She didn't know how either one of them would react if they saw each other. She knew she'd have to explain a lot of things to Ringo, but for now, she needed Frank to leave as soon as possible.
"Ummm...what are you doing here?" Audrey asked as Frank walked to the armchair and pulled her onto his lap.
"Have you talked to John?" Frank asked without responding to her question.
Audrey didn't know if Frank had seen John walk out of her flat. She didn't want to deny it and then be caught in her lie. She had just gotten Frank's trust back and she didn't want to lose it.
"Yes." she replied.
"What did he say?"
"He wanted to know if I knew where Cynthia was...he's worried. "
"What did you tell him?"
"The truth....that I don't know where she is."
Frank nodded with satisfaction as he began to caress Audrey's arm with his fingers.
"Where is she, Frank?"
"Why are you so worried about her, Audrey?"
"I...I'm just concerned. Cynthia doesn't have anything do with this."
"By the way you're acting, you'd think she was your friend....and you know that the first rule in any assignment is to not get attached to anyone. You know this Audrey."
"Yes. I know...and I'm not her friend...I just don't understand why an innocent person like Cynthia needs to be involved in this, that's all."
"Hmmm..." Frank said looking at Audrey. "That better be it. I'd hate to think you grew attached to anyone here. That never ends well you know." Frank said as he kissed Audrey's shoulder. "Something inadvertently happens to them...and you're the one who ends up suffering." He said as he continued kissing Audrey.
"Nothing needs to happen to anyone." Audrey replied.
"We'll need to bring John in soon." Frank replied without paying any attention to Audrey's last comment.
"Bring John in? How do you mean?"
"Resi hasn't shown any improvement in weeks..."
"What do the doctors say, Frank. What is wrong with her?"
"Nothing that can't be fixed." Frank said firmly.
"Frank...." Audrey said gently. "I know you're upset about your daughter's...condition...but John's not a doctor...he isn't going to be able to just... fix her. The doctors-"
"He better if he wants to see that little wife of his again!" Frank raised his voice.
"Frank...be reasonable..." Audrey said trying to calm him back down. "If the doctors haven't been able to help Resi...what makes you think John will?"
"Because she keeps asking for him." Frank responded.

Cynthia had managed to get some sleep despite her circumstances, but even though she had slept she still felt exhausted. She kept thinking of Julian and whether he was safe. She didn't know if John knew where she was or what was happening. There was so much confusion and the more she tried to make sense of everything, the more questions she had.
Nico looked over at Cynthia as she stirred.
"Sleeping beauty awakes." Nico smirked. "You hungry?"
Cynthia nodded.
"How about you run out and get us some food?" Nico asked Leo.
"Me? Why don't you go?" Leo argued.
"Gotta pay your dues, son." he chuckled.
Leo grumbled as he grabbed the keys from the table and walked out.
"Do you know where John is?" Cynthia asked as soon as Leo had closed the door.
"I don't..." Nico said looking at Cynthia.
Cynthia sighed. "Do you know what happened to that man's daughter?"
"Word is she's in a psychiatric hospital."
"What does John have to do with that?"
"I've heard the two of them were involved." Nico replied.
"Involved?" Cynthia's repeated softly.
Nico realized he had revealed that news to Cynthia rather bluntly. He walked over to her and sat down next to her.
"Um...I don't know the details about it, really." Nico said gently. "I'm sure it wasn't recently...probably before you two were even married."
Cynthia tried to smile at him, but she was well aware of who her husband was and didn't put it past him to be involved with another woman.
Nico cleared his throat. "But we don't have much time before Leo comes back..."
"Right." Cynthia said shaking her head to get the image of John with another woman out of her head. "So what's the plan?"

Ringo could hear muffled voices in the living area. He had quietly come out into the bedroom and had made his way to the closed bedroom door. He didn't know what was going on with Audrey, but the look of fear she had when she had pleaded with him to not go out was enough to make him worry about her safety. He pressed his ear against the door, but couldn't make out what was being said. He looked around Audrey's room. Her bed looked as if it had not been slept in. He walked to the nightstand and picked up a frame with a picture of Audrey smiling next to a younger girl. Ringo immediately saw the resemblance. The girl was a younger version of Audrey, most likely her younger sister. He set the frame down and walked to her dresser. He picked up a few pieces of jewelry that were laying there to admire them, but it was a silver locket that caught his attention. He picked it up and opened it. Inside was an old picture of a couple. The woman reminded him of Audrey and he assumed these people could be her parents. She hadn't talked much about her family life. In fact, Ringo didn't really know much about Audrey's life, but the feelings he felt for her were enough for him to overlook that fact. He tried waiting patiently as he anxiously paced back and forth in the room, but his patience quickly wore out and he decided to peak out and see if he could see who was the man that had caused Audrey so much fear.
Ringo quietly opened the door just enough to look out into the living room. He could see Audrey sitting on the lap of a man as he stroked her hair. Immediately, Ringo felt an incredible jealousy build up. He hated seeing Audrey in the arms of another man. He did all he could to not walk out into the living room and ask what this whole thing was about. He had promised her that much. Besides, by the look on her face, she wasn't exactly comfortable with him. He could tell she was tense and as much as she tried to hide it, she was worried. Ringo tried hard to hear what they were talking about, but he was too far away. After a few minutes, Audrey got up and walked the man to the door. As she did, Ringo got a better look at him and recognized him as the man he had seen her with at the restaurant. As Audrey began opening the door, the man pinned her against it, making it shut loudly. He kissed her passionately and his hands shamelessly roamed through her body. Ringo bit his tongue as he watched, his hand clenching the frame of the door as he tried to restrain himself. Audrey eventually pushed him back and laughed nervously before he walked past her and closed the door.

"Paul...what are you doing here?" John said as he opened the door to see him standing on the other side.
"I was a bit worried about you?"
"Worried?" John scoffed as he walked back to the couch and left Paul to close the front door.
"Where's Cyn?" Paul asked looking around.
"She's...out." John said as he took a sip of his drink. Paul saw the bottle of scotch John had sitting on the coffee table.
"Shouldn't we invite Ritchie to this celebration?" Paul asked as he found a glass and began pouring himself some scotch.
John sighed. "Why are you really here?"
"Like I said..." Paul took a sip from his glass. "I'm worried about you."
"Why the fuck would you be worried?"
"Something's up. I can tell. Why don't you tell me?"
"Nothing's going on."
"Why'd you ask about Resi earlier today?" Paul asked with seriousness.
"I told you...I was just... reminded of her, that's all."
"After all these years? You just...remember her?"
"Yeah...so?"
"Alright..."Paul said. "So...is it Audrey, then?"
John looked up at him, but let his gaze fall back to his glass quickly.
"It does have to do with Audrey, doesn't it?" Paul asked.
"No!" John said raising his voice defensively.
Paul knew John well enough to know he had hit a nerve. He knew there was something between Audrey and John, but didn't know why John wouldn't admit to it. He had kissed her quite publically at the restaurant, with Ringo there, so Paul was sure it wasn't because he was trying to spare Ringo's feelings.
They both sat in silence for a few minutes. Paul kept tracing back the events of the last few weeks, trying to somehow piece something together...he wasn't having much luck until something clicked in his mind.
"John..." he began slowly. "What's the connection between Audrey and Resi?"

Audrey sighed and shut her eyes as she heard the door close behind Frank. She opened her eyes after a few seconds and gasped as she saw Ringo staring at her through her open bedroom door.
"Ringo!" she exclaimed making her way to him. "I thought I told you not to come out!" she said reaching him.
"Why? You didn't want me to see how you made out with...HIM? Is that why you were so worried when he showed up? You didn't want him knowing I was here because it would cause problems between the two of you? Who is he Audrey? Who the fuck is that guy?" Ringo yelled angrily.
"Ringo...calm down." Audrey said.
"Don't tell me to calm down and answer the bloody question!"
"He's...just someone I used to know." Audrey said meekly.
"Is that how you treat everyone you used to know?" Ringo said walking past her. "Who is he? I saw you two outside the restaurant after you and John kissed. He was waiting for you out there. He had his hands all over you...like he did just now." Ringo continued.
Audrey walked over to him. "Ringo...I..." she began but Ringo didn't let her finish.
"I had this idea of who you were...or more like who I wanted you to be...but maybe you are just a...whore." Ringo said.
Ringo's words stung Audrey. She never thought she'd actually hear him say that word, but there he was...standing in front of her and calling her a whore. Her sadness soon turned into anger. Who was he to judge her? He didn't know anything about what she had gone through. He didn't know anything about her. She glared at him and before she could stop herself, she slapped Ringo across the face.
"Get out!" Audrey said firmly.
"No."
"It's not a question." Audrey said impatiently.
"Tell me who he is!" Ringo yelled frustrated.
"Why? You've already made up your mind about me, right? So why don't you just think what you want of him too?"
"I have a right to know, dammit!" Ringo shouted.
"What right do you have over me? None! You and I...we're nothing! Nothing!"
"Is that what you really think? That there's nothing between us?" Ringo asked, his voice a bit more steady now.
Audrey refused to reply. She was still too angry with Ringo.
"You really haven't felt anything for me?"
"No." Audrey finally replied with a scowl.
"I don't believe that." Ringo replied.
"No...you wouldn't. Would you? Why should you believe anything I say? What weight does the word of a whore really carry, right?" Audrey said. She could feel a knot in her throat forming and she fought back the tears that were threatening to form.
Ringo grabbed Audrey by the shoulders and looked at her, the anger in his eyes had completely disappeared. "Audrey...I..."
"Just leave me alone." Audrey said as she pulled away from him and ran to her room, slamming the door behind her.
