Chapter 17

"But Frank..." Audrey argued.

"I don't want to hear it, Audrey." Frank said as he finished buttoning his shirt.

"She has nothing to do with this. Why keep her here?"

"I need her as collateral."

Audrey sighed in defeat. Her attempts to convince Frank to let Cynthia go were in vain. Frank, who was sitting on the bed reached out and took her hand. He pulled her towards him and Audrey found herself standing between his legs. She put her hands on his shoulders while he gently caressed the small of her back. He leaned in towards her, breathing her in before beginning to kiss her neck and trailing down towards her chest. He lifted her hips slightly, so her knees were now straddling his thighs.

"You don't have anything to worry about, Audrey..." Frank chuckled. "You keep pleasing me like last night and I have no need for anyone else." Frank said as he tugged on her dress. Audrey lifted her hips and Frank yanked the dress over her head. He looked at her for a few seconds and smiled.

"I thought you had a breakfast meeting." Audrey remarked.

"I do." Frank smiled. "But it can wait." he said as he leaned in to kiss Audrey.

"John...be reasonable." Brian said

"I don't believe it!" John yelled. "And why'd you have to tell those cops, huh? If I had wanted to call them I would have done it myself! I have their fuckin' number!"

"Cynthia is missing and you didn't expect me to get them involved?" Brian replied.

"What are they going to do? They don't even know where she is...they didn't even know she had gone missing. How the bloody 'ell are they going to find Cyn? They're a bunch of incompetent fools is what those two are!"

"John..."

"And then insinuating that Audrey was in on it?"

"John...it is a possibility. Manipulating you is exactly what she was hired to do..."

"But I found her out...she confessed everything to me." John said softly.

"How much of her story do we know to be true? This sister of hers...she may have just made it up so we would sympathize with her." Brian added. "Remember what Sergeant Hall said...these girls...they're prepared for when they get caught."

"No...Audrey wouldn't..."

"Where is she then, John? If she was working for us, don't you think she'd be here? She wouldn't have disappeared. She was the one who set it up...she was the one who told this Frank character where you would be...where Cynthia would be."

Audrey looked at herself in the mirror. Her wet hair fell down the side of her face, barely touching the towel she had wrapped around herself after getting out of the shower. Frank came up behind her and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.

"I guess it'll have to be a lunch meeting instead." He said looking at his watch as he walked back into the room.

Audrey kept looking at herself in the mirror and she felt a tear fall down her cheek. She hardly noticed it by looking at her face, having gotten lost with the beads of water from the shower. She wanted to cry out...she wanted to scream...she wanted to tell Frank exactly what she thought of him...but all she could do was succumb to him...to let him do to her whatever he wanted. She had to remind herself that all her sacrifice was worth it. There were too many lives at stake. She needed to find out where Cynthia was...she needed to know why Frank needed her as collateral. What did he want from John? And why?

She could hear Frank getting dressed and she walked out into the room.

"Where is Cynthia?" Audrey asked.

Frank sighed, a bit irritated. "Audrey, I told you already...in a safe place."

"So what am I supposed to do now?" she asked.

"Nothing's changed from what we talked about yesterday morning, Audrey. The only difference is that I now have some kind of insurance if Lennon doesn't want to cooperate."

"What did he do to you, Frank? Why do you hate John so much?" Audrey asked.

"Audrey! Where have you been?" Paul asked as he saw her being brought into the studio. He had phoned John earlier to see if Cyn had shown up last night, but John had not answered his phone.

"Is Cynthia with you?" Paul asked as he set his guitar down. He had come into the studio for a bit to lay down a track he had been working on at home. He had plans to meet up with the boys later that evening.

"No. Cynthia's not with me." She said.

She had been to the studio once before; a few days ago she had come with Ringo for a few minutes so he could sign a couple of papers. She had been glad the receptionist had recognized her from that day. When she had asked if the Beatles were recording, she had mentioned to her that only Paul was there. Audrey didn't know how to get in touch with John and was hoping Paul could help her.

"Where'd you go last night?" Paul asked.

"I didn't feel well." Audrey lied.

"You left without telling anyone?" Paul inquired.

"I'm sorry...I really should have let someone know."

"Why didn't you?" Paul continued with his interrogation, not believing what Audrey was telling him.

"I'm just...not used to telling others what I'm going to do."

Paul nodded. He didn't buy into what Audrey was telling him, but opted not to push further.

"Cynthia left the club last night without telling anyone too...I thought maybe she'd gone with you." Paul added.

"No." Audrey replied rather quickly. "She's not with me."

"She probably went back home then." Paul said. "You feeling better today?" Paul asked.

"Yes...thanks for asking." Audrey smiled.

"I'm glad to hear." Paul smiled back.

"I..uh...was actually here because I wanted to see if you could tell me where I could find John. I need to talk to him, but I don't have a way to get in touch with him." Audrey stated.

John and Audrey had talked on the phone since the movie had finished filming, but it was always John who called her and she hadn't bothered to get his number since she didn't want to risk Cynthia answering the phone.

Paul looked at Audrey carefully. He knew there was something she wasn't telling him and although he was reluctant to do it, he grabbed a notepad and jotted down John's phone number. He tore the sheet and handed it to Audrey.

"It's to John's flat." Paul said.

"Thank you so much, Paul. I really appreciate it." Audrey smiled as she took the paper. "I'll let you get back to what you were doing." she said and began walking towards the door.

"Audrey?" Paul called after her.

"Yeah?" she turned to face him.

"Whatever game this is you're playing...just consider who you may hurt." Paul blurted out.

Audrey was shocked at Paul's remark. "I'm not playing any game, Paul."

"Look, I'm not dumb...I know there's something up. If you and John don't want to tell me, that's your business..."

"There's no game, Paul..." Audrey tried to reassure him. "Thanks for the phone number." she said before turning around and walking out.

Audrey heard a knock on her door. She quickly got up and suddenly felt a deep nervousness as she walked to open it.

"Where is she?" John walked in as soon as she opened the door, not even bothering to look at her. Audrey closed the door and looked back at John. He looked terrible.

"Like I said over the phone, I don't know where she is, John."

"But you said Frank had her! What the fuck happened last night, Audrey?"

"We were out on the balcony...it must have been only a few minutes later that two of Frank's men forced us to go with them. When we got to the street, two cars were waiting outside. I managed to see Frank before we were pushed into the other car." Audrey said. John had sat down now and was looking down to the floor, his hands rubbing his temples. "In the car, I was injected with something and I lost consciousness. That's the last time I saw Cynthia."

"So how come you're here and not her? Where did those bastards take her?" John asked looking up.

"I've been trying to find out, but all Frank tells me is that she's in a safe place." Audrey replied.

"How could you let this happen?" John said irritated.

Audrey was surprised at John's comments.

"How could I let this happen? You're acting like I knew this was going to happen." Audrey replied.

John stared at Audrey. It wasn't necessary to even say it with words, Audrey knew what he was thinking.

"You...you think I planned this?" Audrey asked shocked.

"Well it is a bit of a coincidence that they knew exactly where we'd be...and that Cyn would be there too." John said coldly.

Audrey couldn't believe it. Where was this coming from? Why was John acting like this towards her?

"John, I know you're worried about your wife...but to accuse me of...being a part of her kidnapping?"

"Now you're offended?" John remarked. "Why wouldn't I think you'd be a part of it? After all, your intentions weren't all that great when you first came into my life. How do I know you're not just putting up an act? Why should I believe you're not still working for Frank and everything you've told me is simply to continue with that plan of seducing me? Of manipulating me?"

"John..." Audrey said with hurt in her voice.

"I mean, had it not been because Ringo became interested in you, your plan would have probably worked on me....you're a beautiful girl...and the worst part is that you know it...you know you could have any man eating out of your hand..."

"Stop it." Audrey yelled at John.

"The truth hurts, doesn't it Audrey?"

"It's not the truth! None of it is! I...I didn't have a choice when I met you! And I didn't have anything to do with Cynthia being taken!"

"Why should I believe you?" John said finally standing up.

"Because I'm telling you the truth!" Audrey cried.

Audrey could feel tears building up in her eyes. After everything she had done...she had risked her life and the life of her sister by opening up not only to John but to the cops themselves; she had pushed away the only man she had felt something real for in order to keep him safe; she had pleaded with Frank to let her go back to him so she could gain his trust again; and she had sacrificed herself sexually in hopes that Frank would leave Cynthia alone...and after everything, she was being accused of being a liar...of being everything she never wanted to be.

"What's the truth, Audrey? That last night you and Cynthia left together and today only you come back?"

"Frank is supposed to think I'm still working for him...you know that!"

"Why should I trust you, Audrey?" John questioned. "Why should I believe you're not exactly like Frank?"

Even though John's words were hurting her, being compared to Frank brought out her anger more than anything.

"You want to know why you should trust me?" Audrey yelled across the room to John. "Because I'm the only link you have to your wife! And if it wasn't for me your wife would..." Audrey's voice trailed off.

She swallowed hard trying to control herself.

"My wife would what?" John asked urging her to continue.

"Forget it." Audrey said turning around.

John walked towards Audrey and took her arm. With force, he turned her around to face him. He had every intention of asking her to continue what she was saying, but when he took a closer look at her, his face softened. When he had walked in, he hadn't even looked at Audrey and without his glasses, he could not see very clearly, but right now, having Audrey so close to him, it was hard to miss the bruise on her left eye. John's grasp on her arm loosened and Audrey pulled away without saying anything.

"Did Frank do this to you?" John asked gently.

"One of his men." Audrey stated.

"What happened last night, Audrey."

"I told you already...but you don't believe me."

"Did Frank hurt you last night? Is that what you were going to say? If it wasn't for you, he would have hurt Cyn?"

Audrey brought her eyes down. "He promised he wouldn't touch Cynthia." Audrey said. She knew she couldn't really believe Frank, but she wanted to calm John down and ease his worry a bit.

"And in return?" John asked.

"He gets to do whatever he wants with me." Audrey said.

"Audrey...I'm..."

"John." Audrey interrupted him as she looked up. "I know I've done a lot of things I'm not proud of...I've made a lot of mistakes...but...I'm not like Frank." she said with her voice cracking. "I care about what happens to you...and to Cynthia. And if I can do something to prevent Frank from harming you or your wife, I will..."

"But..."

"I'd rather it be me than her." Audrey said.

"I'm sorry...for everything." John said sympathetically.

"Why didn't you believe me? Why did you doubt me?" Audrey asked.

"Those bloody cops got into my head this morning...putting all these ideas in my brain about you. I told them it wasn't true...that you couldn't possibly do that to me, but...I guess this whole thing with Cyn has me really messed up. I'm sorry I doubted you."

"I know you are going through a lot...I'm just glad you believe me. You do believe me, right?"

John nodded and gave her a small smile.

"So what does Frank want? Why did he take Cynthia? Were you able to find out?"

"He says she's collateral...to make sure you'll cooperate."

"Cooperate? With that?"

"John...did you know a Theresa Adler?"

John thought for a moment but then looked at Audrey with a confused expression on his face.

"She went by the name of Resi." Audrey clarified.

"Resi?" John perked up. "Of course...but how do you know about Resi?"

"She's Frank's daughter." Audrey replied.
