Chapter 6 ~ Late Night Talks and Spying
It didn't take Mrs. Weasley long to get Harry and I settled in. It never took long, actually. The Weasleys always considered Harry, Hermione, and I family. It had been that way since the day we met them. It had been nice having them around. Especially whenever I needed a laugh. The twins sure knew how to do that.
Once Harry and I took our trunks into Percy's room, we changed into our pajamas and headed into Ron's room, where a newspaper was crumbled up and in the middle of our circle, creating fire. Harry was controlling it with his wand.
"So when did you get here?" he asked Hermione.
"A few days ago," she replied. "Though, for a while, I wasn't sure if I was coming."
Ron looked like he had to say something. So he said it. "Mum sort of lost it last week. She said that Ginny and I had no business going back to Hogwarts, saying hat it's too dangerous."
"Oh, come on!" I protested.
"She's not alone," Hermione added. "Even my parents, Muggles, know something bad is happening."
"Dad stepped in, told her that she was being barmy. It took a few days, but she came around," Ron finished.
"But this is Hogwarts we're talking about. It's Dumbledore. What could be safer?" Harry inquired.
"Harry, there's been a lot of talk recently that Dumbledore's getting a bit old," Hermione said.
"Rubbish!" I intervened. "He's only...What is he?"
Ron looked confused. "Hundred and fifty? Give or take a few years?"
We started laughing at him. Genuinely laughing. We tried keeping it down since everyone else was sleeping, but it took some time for that to happen. When it did, we were silent again. Until Hermione looked at me.
"So...I hate to ask you this, but..." she started. "I've been reading the Daily Prophet and I saw the Malfoys up there. Lucius broke out of Azkaban, didn't he?"
I froze. All I could think about was the last time I saw him. He was beating me. He almost killed me. I looked down at my hands and started fidgeting with them.
"Hermione, she doesn't like talking about that," Harry told her.
"But it's important. If Lucius is one of them, then surely--"
"Lucius is one of them, Hermione," I interrupted. "I'm not stupid. He was gone for a few days. When he came back, he..." I trailed off.
"He what?" Ron questioned.
I shook my head quickly. "Nothing. He did nothing." I stood up and left Ron's room and went into the one I was staying in, shutting the door behind me.
*******
It was around midnight when I was still sitting up in bed. I saw Harry, who fell asleep beside me. I carefully crawled over him and left our bedroom and walked down the hallway, where Ginny's room was, seeing a light through the crack at the bottom. I knocked on the door softly and entered the room, finding Ginny on her bed. She looked up and smiled at me.
"Hi," I said, waving awkwardly.
"Couldn't sleep?" she asked.
I nodded. "Pretty much." I plopped down on her bed, sighing. "How was your summer?"
"Pretty good," she replied, flipping her red hair out of her face. "The boys didn't bother me as much. What about you?"
"Take a wild guess," I chuckled. "It was horrible, as always."
"I bet Draco gave you a hard time."
I shook my head. "Not really. It was mostly Lucius. You know how that goes."
"By the stories you tell me, I'm guessing it's really bad," Ginny said.
"Yeah," I commented.
"Does Harry like anyone?" she asked out of the blue.
I thought about the way Harry was staring up into her window, looking like an idiot when we arrived. I was tempted to say yes. But for Harry's sake, I lied. "I'm not sure. We usually try not to get into each other's love life. I always think that Harry's embarrassed by the subject."
The ginger giggled. "Harry is always awkward around people."
I laughed as I watched Ginny go to her mirror. She was brushing her long, fiery, ginger hair with a hair brush. I watched the way she flipped her hair back, looking like a rush of fire was waving everywhere with its red hands. I didn't know why, but I thought it was beautiful. Even though it was Ginny Weasley, one of my best friends, I always found her pretty.
My eyelids started to flutter from being tired. No matter how hard I tried to keep them open, I finally gave in and drifted off to sleep on Ginny's bed. I thought I heard her angelic giggle one last time before I let my dreams about Draco take over.
Draco. I missed him. I missed him in a way. I was ready to go back to Hogwarts. Just so I could see him again.
*******
The next day, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and I decided to go to Fred and George's new shop that they opened up in Diagon Alley. Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes was the name of it. The two got the money from Harry and I when we won that stupid tournament back in fourth year.
But after the twins basically dropped out of Hogwarts, they opened the shop. Not many shops were open anymore. The Weasley twins were the only ones who still kept Diagon Alley alive. Ron said that they reckon people need a laugh these days. After all, Voldemort had been back for two years now. He had a point.
A burst of color smacked me in the face when we entered the shop. People were scattered all around the shop, looking at everything in awe. I made my way over to where Ginny and Hermione were at. They were looking at love potions. That was the last thing I needed.
"Hello, ladies," the twins came over to us.
"Love potions, eh?" Fred said. "Yeah. They really do work."
"But from what we've heard, sis, you're doing just fine on your own," George added with a smirk.
"Meaning?" Ginny questioned.
"Are you not currently dating Dean Thomas?" Fred asked.
The redhead blushed and walked away. "That's none of your business."
Well, that sucked for Harry. I was sure that he really liked her.
Hermione and I started grinning until we turned around and saw some guy who caught Hermione's eye. She quickly turned away, walking with Ginny.
I silently giggled to myself and went with Harry to a shelf. He was looking at what was called Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder. "What's this?" I asked the twins, holding some of it up to them.
"It's the best stuff in case you need to make a quick getaway," Fred replied.
"Feel free to take some, you two," George added.
"No, we couldn't do that," Harry protested.
"We insist," Fred said. "If it wasn't for you two, this shop wouldn't even be here. We owe you."
I smiled at them. "Thanks, guys."
They smiled at us and continued on. We grabbed a few more of the powder and continued looking around the shop. Ron was arguing with his brothers about something and decided he wanted to leave. He grabbed Hermione and we left the shop after a girl said hey to Ron.
As we went by the empty shops, Hermione stopped. "Oh, no. Everyone got their wands from Ollivander's." We headed inside the shop, where there was nothing. Completely nothing. Everything was empty, the floor was dirty, and Ollivander himself wasn't there.
Ron and I looked out the window and saw Draco and his mother. "Max," he started. "Is it me, or do Malfoy and Mummy look like two people who don't want to be followed?"
Before I knew it, I was out the door, following Draco and Narcissa, with Harry behind me, followed by Ron and Hermione.
We went down a dark alley while the two didn't look behind them to see if anyone was following them. It was obvious that no one came back here. Especially if they were alone. I wouldn't, that was for sure.
Once they got to their destination, Draco entered a shop that was called Borgin and Burkes. We found out that we followed them to Knockturn Alley, a place where Harry and I ended up one time. It was not a pleasant experience. We learned something that day, and that was to make sure to say your location very clearly when using Floo Network.
"Let's get on top of here," I suggested, climbing up onto the roof of a small building as I watched Narcissa follow her son into the shop.
The other three got on the roof with me and looked through the window of Borgin and Burkes. Draco was looking at a cabinet, running his hand across the front and studying it.
I watched him with my eyebrows furrowed. What was Draco doing? Observing a cabinet? What was so important about it?
Before we knew it, Fenrir Greyback, a Death Eater, was at the window.
We ducked down until he finally stopped looking at us. When we looked back up, the blinds were down. I was confused by all of this.
Was Draco Malfoy becoming a Death Eater?
