Chapter 5 ~ Paying a Visit
I was packed and ready to go the next evening. My face was fixed up, as if nothing happened.
Draco took me outside to the gates, setting my stuff down. "You got everything?"
"Yes."
"I'll see you at school, then."
"Okay."
I honestly didn't want to leave. It was pretty obvious that Draco didn't want me to leave, either. But maybe it was for the best. I had to go to the Burrow sooner or later. Everyone would be pretty worried about me, that was for sure. But I was worried about Draco now. He had been through so much shit just to help me. Now that I thought about it, for the last four years, Draco helped me a lot. He helped me escape for four years. That was a debt I'd never be able to repay.
"Thank you, Draco," I told him. "I feel bad because I can't repay you for the last four years that you've saved my arse."
He chuckled. "I think one last kiss from you will do."
I smiled weakly and we both leaned in until our lips finally touched. He was gentle and firm, placing his hands on my face. We stood there for one, two, thirty seconds, kissing each other.
Draco pulled away now, inches away from my face. "I had to do that one last time," he whispered.
"Out of all the things, I'm going to miss that the most," I replied. "So I guess you can say whatever we have ends here again, right?"
He shook his head. "I don't want whatever we have to end."
"But it has to, just like you said."
He sighed. "I know."
I nodded. "I'll see you soon." I gave him a light peck on the cheek and walked out of the gate with my trunk and broom. I mounted my broom and started flying off to Little Whinging.
When I arrived at the Dursley house, I hopped off my broom and looked up at Harry's bedroom window. I decided to fly back up to his window to see if he was there. Sure enough, he was sitting on his bed, reading a book. I knocked on his window. He looked up and rushed to the window, opening it for me.
"What the hell, Max?!" he said. "There are Muggles around, you know."
"Hey, bro. Nice to see you, too," I responded sarcastically, rolling my eyes at him. I flew into his room and jumped off my broom.
"Be quiet! They'll hear you!" he hissed at me.
"Sorry," I whispered.
He grabbed my stuff, placed them by his bed, and turned back to me, pulling me in for a hug. I sighed in his embrace and placed my head on his shoulder.
He pulled away, sighing. "How have you been? I got your letters. You seemed distraught. Are you alright?"
I plopped onto his bed and looked at him. He did the same and waited for me to speak. "I don't know if this has been the worst summer yet. So much stuff happened."
"Like what?"
"If I told you, I'm pretty sure you'd disown me as your sister."
"That would be hard to do since we're twins."
"I'm serious, Harry," I told him, holding a stern look on my face.
"Well, I'm sure what you did wasn't too bad."
I nodded. "Yes, it was, bro. It was really bad."
"Oh, come on, sis. You always say it like it's a big deal."
I stared at him.
"Don't give me that look."
I raised my eyebrows at him.
"Stop that."
I continued to stare at him.
"Maxine!"
I groaned and laid back on his bed. "Forget it, Harry. By the way, don't call me Maxine ever again."
"You know, I hate it when you tease me like that," he added.
"And I hate it when you call me Maxine," I retorted.
We stayed there for a few more minutes until Harry and I decided to go out somewhere. We went to a café that was underground and decided to catch up on things. Despite me telling Draco that Harry didn't care about my love life, I still didn't tell Harry about what happened between me and Draco. We weren't really a couple, but if he ever found out that I had sex with him, who knew what he would do to Draco.
I saw Harry pull out a copy of the Daily Prophet and started reading it. I sat there across from him, looking down at my coffee, thinking about Draco and what he did to me. He gave me a new feeling, a new and unique feeling that I never knew I could feel, something I never felt with Cedric. It was less powerful than love, but more powerful than just having a crush on someone. I wanted to keep whatever I was feeling locked up somewhere. Somewhere I knew they would be safe. Safe from everyone except from me and Draco.
"How the hell did Lucius break out of Azkaban?" Harry asked.
"Someone posed as him by using Polyjuice Potion," I replied.
"He must have if he was at the manor, beating the shit out of you," he muttered. He gave me an apologetic look after realizing what he said. "Oh, Max. I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..."
I shrugged. "Whatever. I'm used to it."
"Don't say that," he said. When I didn't respond, he put his nose back in the paper.
I sighed as he continued to read the paper. Just as I was about to continue thinking about Draco, a waitress came over to us. "Harry and Maxine Potter. Who's Harry and Maxine Potter?"
Harry looked up at the waitress and paused before speaking. "N-No one. Two tossers, really."
"Yeah, they're nobodies," I added.
She nodded and began to giggle. "Funny newspaper of yours. The other night, I swear those pictures were moving."
Harry started to laugh as well. "Really?" he asked.
He had been here before, I assumed.
"Yeah," she replied. "I thought I was going mad." She smiled and started walking away from us.
My brother looked at me and grinned. Then he turned around. "Hey, what time--"
"Eleven," the girl said. "That's when I get off. You can tell me all about those tossers, Harry and Maxine Potter." She smiled again and went back to handling the other customers.
He chuckled and then he checked his breath. "Hey, does my breath smell bad?" Harry stood up and started to exhale in my face.
"Ew, Harry!" I pushed him back into his seat. "Be a gentleman for once! And yes, it does smell bad." I scoffed in disgust.
"Thank you for being so honest," he commented, rolling his eyes.
"That's why you love me." I smirked. "Because I'm so honest."
"Sure," he chuckled.
As I looked out the window, the subway was moving and I spotted someone who looked a lot like...Dumbledore. "Harry. Did you see that?"
"See what?" He looked out the window and saw the same thing I saw. It was Dumbledore, standing on the other side of the tracks. "Come on."
We left the café and went across the tracks, finding Dumbledore. He was staring at a sign when we approached him.
"You two have been reckless this summer," he said. "Especially you, Max." I turned away while my face was getting hot.
"We like riding around trains," Harry lied. "Takes our minds off things."
He looked at us and stuck his left arm out. "Take my arm," he said.
"Both of us?" I asked stupidly.
"Yes, Max. Do as I say."
Harry and I looked at each other and hesitated before grabbing Dumbledore's arm and being sucked into what felt like a narrow tunnel. We screamed until we landed on a road, panting and also feeling sick.
"You alright, Max?" Harry asked me.
"Yeah. You?"
"Same. I think we just Apparated."
"Quite successfully, too, I might add. Most people vomit the first time," Dumbledore told us.
"I can't imagine why," I muttered.
Dumbledore started walking away from us and we followed him.
As we were walking, he started talking to us about where we were at. "Welcome to the charming village of Budleigh Babberton. I assume that you two are wondering why I brought you here tonight."
"Actually, sir, after all these years, we just sort of go with it," Harry replied.
He looked back at the door that was no longer on its frame. "Wands out."
We took out our wands and entered the house. It looked as if someone robbed the house before we came here. Dumbledore kept on whispering a name as Harry and I continued looking around the house with our wands lit up. I spotted a newspaper that had our picture on the front and a drop of blood fell on top of it. I looked up and another drop of blood fell on my forehead.
"What the hell?" Harry said.
Dumbledore came over to me and tasted the blood. He looked over at a chair and poked it. All of a sudden, a head popped out of the chair.
"Merlin's beard!" the man shouted, which made Harry and I jump a little. "No need to disfigure me, Albus."
"Well, I must say, you make a very convincing armchair, Horace," Dumbledore admitted.
"What gave me away?" he asked.
Dumbledore pointed up at the ceiling. "Dragon's blood." Then he turned to us. "Harry, Max, I'd like you to meet an old friend and colleague of mine, Horace Slughorn. Horace...well, you who they are."
"Harry and Maxine Potter," he said, chuckling.
"So what's with all the theatrics, Horace?" Dumbledore questioned.
"The Death Eaters have been trying to recruit me for over a year. Muggles own this place."
"I think we should put it back in order for them, don't you?" Suddenly, Dumbledore waved his wand and objects started to replace themselves and move back to place by itself until everything was back in order. Dumbledore left to go somewhere while Slughorn was yelling at him about something.
He looked at us and smiled. "You two are very like your father. Except for the eyes. You have--"
"Our mother's eyes," we finished.
"Lily. Lovely Lily, She was exceedingly bright, your mother. Even more impressive when I found out she was a Muggle-born."
"One of our best friends is Muggle-born. She's the best in our year," Harry said.
"Oh, please don't think I'm prejudiced. No, no. Your mother was one of my absolute favorites." He led us to a shelf with pictures of his students. He talked about some of his students. And then he talked about Regulus Black, Sirius' younger brother. "You know, Sirius died a few weeks ago. I never taught him, but he was a talented boy, I heard."
"Yeah," I mumbled.
Dumbledore came back and we started to make our way out.
Once we were almost on the street again, Slughorn came out and called out to us. "All right! I'll do it! But I want Professor Merrythought's old office, not the water closet I had before! And I expect a raise! These are mad times we live in. Mad!" With that, he went back inside.
"They are, indeed," Dumbledore added.
"Sir, what was all that about?" I asked.
"You two are talented, famous, and powerful. Everything Horace values. Professor Slughorn is going to try to collect you two. You two will be his crowning jewels. That's why he's returning to Hogwarts, and it's crucial he should return." He paused for a moment, then continued on. "I fear I may have stolen a wondrous night from you, Harry. The girl was very pretty."
Harry smiled. "It's alright, sir. I'll go back tomorrow, make up some excuse."
"Oh, you two won't be returning Little Whinging tonight," he said.
"But what about our trunks?" I inquired.
"They're waiting for you. Take my arm again."
With that, we took his arm once more and in second, we ended up standing in muddy water.
"Ugh! Gross!" I scoffed.
"Out of all the places, why water?" Harry said.
"At least these shoes are old," I commented, looking down at my sneakers.
We walked up to a house with lights and instantly knew where we were at: the Burrow. We looked up and saw Ginny in her room, reading a book. Harry was smiling like an idiot while staring at her.
"Stop that." I whacked his arm.
He snapped out of his trance and started to head inside with me behind him. Just as we were about to open the door, Harry stopped. "I have an idea. Let's stay here for a second."
I smiled and heard footsteps coming down the stairs. Hedwig was chirping a little as Ginny's voice was calling out to her mother. We quietly entered the house and stood beside our stuff.
"Ginny, what is it?" Mrs. Weasley asked her.
"I was only wondering when Harry and Max got here," she said.
"What? Harry and Max who?"
"Harry and Max Potter, of course."
"I think I'd know if Harry and Max Potter were in my house, wouldn't I?" she retorted.
"Their trunks are in the kitchen and so is Hedwig!" Ginny exclaimed.
"No, dear, I seriously doubt that." Hedwig started chirping again and we started laughing to ourselves.
"Harry and Max? Did someone say Harry and Max?" It was Ron this time.
"Me, nosy. Are they up there with you?" Ginny asked.
"Of course not. I'd know if my best friends were in my room, wouldn't I?"
More footsteps occurred. "Was that an owl?" It was Hermione.
"You haven't seen them, have you? Apparently, the two are somewhere around the house."
"Really?" she questioned.
"Really!" Harry and I shouted.
Ginny saw us and ran up to me and gave me a hug. Then, she gave Harry a hug. When she pulled away, their eyes were locked and Harry was still holding onto her.
Then, Hermione came in. "Harry! Max!" She ran up to Harry first, then to me, followed by Ron and Mrs. Weasley.
"What a lovely surprise!" she said. "Why didn't you let us know you were coming?"
"Dumbledore," we replied.
"Oh, that man! What would we do without him?" She smiled.
I had no idea, Mrs. Weasley. No idea at all.
