Chapter 17 ~ Holding Hands
When we got back to Hogwarts, things were almost normal again after the Death Eaters attacked at the Burrow. The day classes resumed was also the day that Hermione gave us a lecture on who we were and all that stuff that Harry and I already knew about.
"It's so easy for them to get to you two. You're bloody lucky you weren't killed," she scolded us on the way to class. "You two need to realize who you are."
"We know who we are, Hermione, all right?" I snapped at her. "Sorry," I quickly apologized.
"No, it's fine," she said.
"It's hard being the Chosen Ones, you know? So much pressure is put on you. Merlin, I don't think I can handle it much longer." I huffed a sigh.
"Has anyone seen Ron?" Harry randomly asked us.
As we were walking down the hall, we spotted Ron and Lavender. She gave him a necklace and clipped it around his neck, clinging onto his arm and calling him silly nicknames.
"That's my Won-Won!" I heard her squeal as I went past her.
"Excuse me, I have to vomit," Hermione informed us, walking back in the other direction. Harry and I grinned, continuing to walk to our next class.
"She's right, you know. We were lucky that we weren't killed out there," I stated.
"Why did you run after her?" He was serious now.
"Oh, don't even go there, Harry. If I was upstairs and you were downstairs, you'd run after that bitch, too. She killed Sirius. Do you expect her to get away with it?"
"Well, no, but that still doesn't change the fact that six of us almost got killed the other night because of you, Max! Okay, yes, I was chasing after Bellatrix as well. But I was also chasing after you that night. I don't want you to get hurt. The Wizarding world isn't safe right now."
Ugh, great. I pointed something out to him and now he was lecturing me on how I put more lives in danger in just one night. It wasn't my fault that Voldemort wanted us dead as soon as possible. More lives were in danger every single day. It was now up to us to stop putting so many lives at stake. But how were we supposed to stop him?
By the time we arrived at History of Magic, Hermione was already there. While Harry was sitting on my left, the one and only Draco Malfoy was sitting on my right. I was hoping my brother wouldn't notice him there. He would go mad if he caught Draco trying to make a move on me during class. But Draco was more clever than any of my friends gave him credit for.
"Hey, Maxine," he said.
I looked over and rolled my eyes, grinning. "That was random. Plus, you know I don't like that name."
"You might not, but I do," he replied, smirking. "Maybe I can call you that in bed next time."
I gasped at his comment, wondering if he was joking or not. I shot him a warning look, anyway. "Shut up. My brother is right beside me."
"So? Let him be jealous that you're getting more action in your love life than he is," he said.
I exhaled, shaking my head and chuckling. "You're crazy."
"Tell me something I don't know."
To be honest, I hadn't thought about sleeping with Draco again. I wanted to stay friends, despite the complications we had set between us. Being friends with Draco Malfoy was becoming more and more difficult with each embrace or conversation we had together, and I was wondering if he felt the same way.
As Professor Binns began talking, I was already starting to get bored. The only one that was actually paying attention was Hermione. She scribbled down notes as Professor Binns continued lecturing the class. We were sitting in the back, so no one would notice me if I went to sleep. Before I could shut my eyes, I felt someone grab my hand, starling me.
"Your hand is sweaty," Draco whispered.
"Shut up," I whispered back. "I hope you know that I write with this hand."
"Well, it looks like you won't be writing in this class today, will you?" He smirked at me, moving his chair closer to mine.
I tried to hide my smile and blush from him, but I gave him the satisfaction and smiled at him. What was it about him that made him so intolerable but yet so perfect at the same time? I wanted more of him.
When class finally ended, I immediately released his hand and gathered up my stuff, packing it into my bag. Then I looked at Draco once more.
"You couldn't help yourself, could you?" I asked.
"Don't act like you weren't enjoying yourself. I know you liked it," he retorted, giving me a wink.
I scoffed. "Right, having my sweat cover your hand for an entire class? What fun that is."
"Hey, at least you admitted it."
I snorted. "Whatever." He knew I was being sarcastic, but that didn't stop him from trying to be funny.
I watched him strut out of the classroom. Harry was waiting for me by the door so that we could go to lunch. As we were walking in the Great Hall, we began to talk.
"Why were you talking to Malfoy after class?" he asked me.
I shrugged. "Malfoy was just being Malfoy, that's all."
"What was he talking to you about?"
I couldn't help but laugh at his question. "Oh, it was nothing, Harry," I replied. "Nothing at all."
He shot me a weird look. "Are you okay?"
I nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine. Why?"
"You're just acting a bit strange." Harry eyed me for a moment.
I smiled. "I'm okay, seriously."
He finally gave in and nodded. "Okay, then."
My smile faded as we sat down. In all honesty, I wasn't sure how to feel when I was around Draco Malfoy.
