Chapter 14 ~ In the Corridors

It was finally game day today and I was not planning to lose my focus. I was thinking about what Blaise told me last night and it stuck to me the entire night. All I could think about was Draco. But why would I be thinking about him? I was with Ginny. I was happy with Ginny. So why was that feeling that I had before coming back to me? Like every question I thought of, I never had the answer to it. I always got the same results each time: Nothing, and I hated nothing.

Ron and I were entering the Great Hall the next morning. He was looking around, seeing if anyone was watching him come in with his Keeper hat on. They were.

"Just go, Ron. It'll be fine," I told him.

"Good luck, Ron!" Neville said as he walked past us and out of the Great Hall.

Once we were heading inside, Seamus came up to us. "I'm counting on you, Ron. I have two Galleons on Gryffindor."

My eyes went over to the Slytherin table, where Crabbe, Goyle, and some other boys I didn't recognize were making fun of Ron. Draco, however, was not sitting with them. Instead, he isolated himself, staring blankly into space. We didn't make eye contact, which gave me a feeling that something was wrong. I was beginning to worry about him.

As the ginger and I sat down across from Harry and Hermione, I took one last glance at Draco. The boy didn't look up at me. Disappointed, I sighed and turned back around at my table. Ginny was beside me and gave me a smile. I grinned and chuckled to myself a little.

"So how was it, then?" Ron asked Harry and Hermione, who seemed a bit confused at his question.

Hermione looked up from her newspaper to answer. "How was what?"

"Your dinner party?" he retorted.

"Pretty boring, actually," the girl replied. "Though, I think Harry enjoyed dessert."

Harry blushed a little, but I was the only one who noticed this.

"Slughorn's having a Christmas do, you know," I perked up, taking a sip of my juice. "We're meant to bring someone."

"I expect Hermione will be going with McLaggen. He's in the Slug Club, isn't he?" the redhead snapped.

"Actually, I was going to ask you," Hermione informed Ron.

Ron snorted in disbelief.

Suddenly, Lavender Brown came behind Ron and lightly touched him on the shoulder. "Good luck today, Ron. I know you'll be brilliant." She walked away after that, hoping it would boost Ron's confidence, but it only made it worse.

"I'm resigning. After today's match, McLaggen can have my spot."

"No, Ron!" I protested. "You're better than that idiot! You earned this spot, didn't you? It's your time to shine. Don't let Cormac have all the glory."

"I don't care about that anymore, Max. I can't do it."

"Have it your way," Harry said, sliding his juice over to him.

"Hello, everyone." We all turned around and saw Luna with a lion hat on. "You look dreadful, Ron. Is that why you put something in his cup, Harry?"

"Put what in his cup?" I asked Harry.

"Is it a tonic?" she questioned.

"Harry, what the hell is she talking about?" I hissed at him. He put the vial of Liquid Luck back in his pocket.

"Liquid Luck," Hermione stated.

"You've got to be kidding me," I muttered to myself.

"Don't drink it, Ron!" Hermione shot him a warning look.

Ron drank it, anyway. Harry grinned.

"You could be expelled for that!" I told Harry.

"I don't know what you're talking about," he said.

Ron was slowly smiling. "Come on, Harry. We've got a game to win!" The two boys stood up and left the Great Hall.

Hermione, Ginny, and I looked at each other in shock, "I cannot believe your brother just did that."

"Trust me, Hermione, I'm going to talk to him about it. He might not live to see tomorrow."

"At least Ron is less gloomy about the game," Ginny added.

I sighed. "Well, we better get going, Gin. Like Ron said, we've got a game to win."

*******

It amazed me how horrible the Slytherin team got every year. Even with some stupid Slytherin as a Chaser, he didn't stand a chance against me and Ginny. We were quicker than he was and he knew it. So why was he trying to dodge us every time he got the Quaffle?

But with every attempt they tried to make by hitting a goal, Ron was always there at the last second. The more times he dodged the Quaffle, the louder everyone cheered.

I caught a glimpse of Hermione, who was smiling and clapping with everyone else. It was obvious to me that she liked him. I saw it in her eyes, her smile, the way she talked to him at times. It was cute.

I did the same thing around Draco and I never realized it. The difference between Hermione's friendship with Ron and my friendship with Draco was that while hers was still continuing to grow, mine was fading away. I hated myself for it. Because not only did Draco screw up, but I did as well.

Before I knew it, the game was over and we headed back to the castle. The entire Gryffindor Common Room was filled with everyone surrounding Ron. As he smiled and cheered on as well, Harry, Hermione, Ginny, and I stood back and watched.

"You really shouldn't have done it," Hermione said to Harry, talking about the Liquid Luck.

"I know. I suppose I could've used a Confundus Charm."

Ginny and I snickered at his comment. He actually had a point.

Hermione's mouth dropped. "That was different. That was tryouts. This was an actual game."

Harry pulled out the vial from his pocket and held it in front of her face. It was still full.

"You didn't put it in," I said. Harry shook his head. "Ron only thought you did."

He nodded again, smiling and turning back his attention to Ron.

I felt Ginny take my hand and whisper in my ear. "Let's get out of here."

"I thought you'd never say anything," I whispered back to her.

She giggled silently. Before we left, we caught Lavender slamming her lips onto Ron's. While Harry had a big grin on his face, Hermione quickly ran out of the Gryffindor Common Room, where Harry's grin went away.

"I'll go talk to her," Harry informed us.

We both nodded, following him, then going in another direction. We headed for the empty corridors, where we were alone. Ginny had my hand in hers, guiding me through the hallways. She would lean her back against the wall and let me kiss her. Our hands would either be pressed up in the wall or tangled up in someone's hair. Neither of us cared. To us, kissing each other was a natural thing.

"Merlin, Ginny, how the bloody hell do you get that red hair of yours so soft?" I blurted out. "I love it."

"One can only wish they had my hair." She smirked.

"Got that right."

We both smiled at each other and continued to kiss one another.

Why this felt right, neither of us knew why, but it did. As I pulled away, the ginger bit her lip and then her smile faded away. I looked over to see what she was staring at. I held my breath.

Draco Malfoy was watching us.

His eyes said everything for him. He didn't even have to open his mouth. I could tell that he was upset. Not just with me, but with himself as well. He was expecting me to come back to him, but he was wrong about that. But what did I do? I moved on with someone else. Not just someone else. It was with Ginny Weasley, my best friend and my brother's crush.

The upset look he gave me was a clue to me that I tore his heart into pieces. I knew that heart over my name on his calendar meant something. When we had sex it meant something and now I threw it all away for Ginny.

"Max, you alright?" Ginny asked, giving me a concerned look.

I nodded quickly. "Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just worn out from celebrating, that's all."

She brushed her hands against my face, seeing that something was off. "Well, I'll see you later, then, okay?"

With that, she attempted to give me one last peck on the lips, but I turned my head and she gave me a peck on my cheek instead. She walked away, leaving me alone in the corridors by myself. When I looked to see if Draco was still there, he was gone, too.

Merlin, why did he have to walk in on us? It ruined everything for us. I knew it was my fault. I couldn't fix it. It was too late.

For hours, I walked around the castle, having mental conversations with myself. I was crying the entire time. I didn't know why, but I was. My heart was aching for him. But my head told me to go for Ginny. I wasn't sure what to do anymore.

"Why does this have to be so difficult?" I asked out loud.

I sniffled, wiping more tears off of my face. It was getting late so I headed back to the Gryffindor Tower. I went through the portal and saw Harry on the couch.

He looked up from the fire and smiled weakly at me. "Hey," was all he said.

"Hey," I managed to get out when I plopped beside him.

"Have you been crying?" I nodded. "What's wrong?"

"I'm just...I'm just bloody confused," I replied, shaking my head. "At this point, I don't deserve anyone." I started to cry harder.

"Hey, hey, it's okay," my twin said calmly. He pulled me into his arms. "That's not true, Max. You deserve someone special. Someone who will take care of you and love you for who you are."

"I did have someone, but he's dead now," I reminded him.

"That doesn't mean there isn't anyone else out there. You just have to keep looking." He paused for a moment, then spoke up again. "Do you want to talk about it?"

I paused for a moment and then sighed, shaking my head. "I don't think it's the right time to tell you. When the time is right, Harry."

"When the time is right," he repeated.

But when was there a time when our lives were right?

"Max?"

"Yeah?"

"When will the time ever be right?"

I sighed sadly. "I honestly don't know, Harry."
