Candles Alight

The sentimental mentality

of the century and this scene

is just a passing reality

of all we think it really means

The guarded hearts

and the heartless parts

of the art we often display

are yet a facsimile of intimacy

and a tribute to a dreamed-up day

Waxwork dolls in the hall

stare unaware as we try to forestall

the coming uncertainty

that certainly appalls

A somber stroll we wandered into

A calmer road has called us out

As the snow we know ensues

Let us not feed the doubt

For winter is bitter enough alone

The world can splinter all on its own

Have we not learned what we've been shown?

The hand begs the heart to find what we own

Wishes are a waisted word

if no spirit above has heard

Settle in your mind to pray

Carry not these cares in vain

This is the eve to relieve the stars

and leave the candles alight

Hold to courage against alarms

and find your way through this night

Lost are the ones we could not save

The souls we held beyond our resolve

But none were stolen that we gave

And all return to welcoming halls

Lay dreaming dear sleeper

on down and be still

Leave the ice to the weeping

on your old windowsill

The dawn is a doorway

and anon shall it stand

Watch for our friends shortly

and go hand in hand
