chapter three
CLOSED HEARTS
◜ Enemies with a Common Goal ◝
It had been six days since Draco and Adalina had discovered Audon's secret and they had made a foolproof plan in order to catch him. After all it was Adalina who had planned around 98% of it. The other two percent being Draco volunteering to watch the plan work itself out.
Also, during those four days which they spent planning, their relationship had gone from complete enemies to enemies united with one common goal.
Their bicker and banter, their shared glares, witty remarks and repulsed feelings against one another were still completely present. They just had to learn to work together in order to execute their plan.
"Are you sure this is going to work?" Draco asked Adalina regarding the part of their plan in which Adalina had to flirt with Audon's son.
"Well of course, like I have explained for the thousandth time. Audon will follow us into the maze and when we get him near where our parents are, I'll leave Jacob alone. Audon will go on to scold him for hanging around with me, talk a little about his plan and our father's will hear." Adalina explained like it was the most obvious thing in the world, which in her mind it was.
"How are you sure he'll expose his plan? What if Jacob doesn't know his father's intention?" He asked smugly, looking for a fault in her plan in order to rub it in her face.
"He knows and Audon will." Was all she said.
"How are you so sure?" He pressured her again.
"Jacob likes to spill secrets from time to time, when I bat my eyelashes at him." She replied, teasingly winking at him. Draco scrunched his face up in disgust. "Of course he didn't tell me much, but his words were enough to let me know that he's aware of his father's plan."
"I can't believe you would flirt with a muggle, actually I can believe it. After all your family is full of blood traitors." He replied; she shot him a glare.
"Shut up, you blasted doofus!" She exclaimed exasperated. She calmed herself down before staring at him and speaking again. "We need to work together in order for this plan to work, if I can control myself to not stab you with a knife then you can hold back your narcissistic remarks for at least a minute." She told him in a more calm manner, he stared at her intensely before sighing.
"Fine, whatever you say Astro." He replied, she smiled in satisfaction and went to retire into the bookshelves, but stopped at the sound of Draco's voice. "You're the one, who's a doofus." He said, she turned back to look at him annoyed. "You did say a minute and exactly one minute passed." He shrugged and shot her a playful smirk, and for the first time Adalina actually laughed at something he said rather than laugh at him.
—
It was the next day and Adalina was walking alongside the entrance of the maze, which was located in the back of the castle, looking at the different types of flowers that were planted. She could see Jacob walking over to her, as she leaned down to take a closer look at the flowers.
"Beautiful aren't they? I helped my father plant them." He told Adalina with a proud smile.
"Indeed they are." She replied looking up at him with a kind smile, he leaned down and picked one off the floor and gave it to her.
"A beautiful flower, for a beautiful woman." He said shyly, she grabbed it and giggled.
"Thanks."
A scoff was heard from inside the maze, Draco. Adalina tried to cover it up and quickly grabbed Jacob's hand. Pulling them closer together as they stood up straight. Their faces inches away from each other.
"Would you like to join me for a stroll inside the maze?" She asked him, her eyes full of joy as she bit her lip anxiously awaiting his answer. Jacob was flustered his face and ears red, he took in a deep breath and nodded eagerly. "Wonderful." She replied pulling him next to her as they entered the maze.
After a couple minutes of them talking as they wondered around the maze that the two of them had memorized. They finally reached the entrance to the middle, where her father and Lucius stood looking over some papers.
They weren't visible from Jacob or Adalina's point of view, seeing as the were in front of hedge that blocked their view. Inconspicuously Draco watched the two of them interact, repulsed at how Adalina could flirt with a muggle as if it was nothing.
He wondered about how she could even entertain the thought of staining her bloodline. It's not like he cared about her family's reputation, but he couldn't stand the thought of the shame she would bring to the title of pureblood. So he made a pact with himself, he would try to get her to fall in love with a pureblood and he knew exactly who.
During his little mind boggle he failed to notice that Adalina had left Jacob alone, and that not even a few seconds later Audon appeared. Adalina stood next to Draco focused on the spectacle that was appearing before their eyes, when she noticed that Draco wasn't paying attention.
She hit him on the head, making him snap out of his trance and turn to her with a glare. "Pay attention." She mouthed at him, rolling his eyes he followed her order.
"What do you think you're doing? I told you to stay away from Adalina Astro!" Audon screamed at Jacob, exasperation clear in his tone. His shouts grabbed the attention of Amadeo and Lucius who walked closer to the father and son pair, making sure to stay out of sight.
"I'm sorry. It's not like it'll ruin our plan." Jacob replied, Audon widened his eyes at his reply.
"It will indeed ruin our plan, if you go out and catch feelings for Adalina you will try to make her happy. To make her happy you'll try to stop me from killing Amadeo, and consequentially Lucius too." Audon scolded his child. Amadeo and Lucius stood up straight and walked over to them, but Jacob and Audon had failed to notice the new presence.
"Kill me and Lucius?" Amadeo asked, his voice low and cold. The tone he used brought fear to Jacob and Audon. Both of them turning to look at Amadeo and Lucius.
"A–Amadeo p–please let me explain!" Audon begged, Lucius scoffed.
"How exactly are you going to explain why you must murder us?" Amadeo asked, walking forward his wand out in a threatening manner.
"I–I..."
"Silence!" Amadeo shouted. "You have disrespected my trust in you, my family and the Malfoy's. Now walk, because you're going straight to prison. You and your whole family."
They began to walk away, leaving Draco and Adalina alone. The two of them walked out of the hedge in which they were in. A proud smile on Adalina's face, and a surprised one on Draco.
"Told you my plan would work, after all it was I who made it." She expressed proudly.
"I h–helped." He replied, struggling to express such degrading word.
"Please all you contributed was that you would be there to watch." She said matter-of-factly. "Anyways there's no need for us to interact further longer."
"Correct, and we will never talk about our little plan to anyone. Don't want to get myself associated with you." Draco replied being his usual way. They both looked at each other and nodded, retreating out of the maze without muttering a word.
