Chapter 11: Kinetic Adapter Project

It was day two of the new school year at UA high, being in class 1-A. To say that I was excited for this day was an understatement.

After everything that has happened yesterday, I still haven't heard of Katsu. I tried to reach him through text messages, but to no avail; he never answered me back. Knowing him, he was still pissed off about yesterday after seeing Zuku use his new quirk. Not like I blame him or anything, but I don't know why he is ghosting me now.

So with that in mind, I woke up earlier than I had in a while to head over to Katsu's house.

Amaya was shocked, to say the least, about my early rise, but paid no attention to it. Instead, we continued on our routine of making breakfast and cleaning after ourselves. After that, I got changed into my school uniform and headed out.

By this time, it was almost 7:00 in the morning. I wanted to make sure that I could catch Katsu at home before he left. I know that he usually leaves by 7:30 to make it to my house, but he may go early so he doesn't see me- knowing that I would do the same thing if I were in his shoes.

It didn't take long to get to his house before I knocked on their door. The sound of a feminine voice rang in the house, and angry battering made it clear that everyone was still home. I waited a minute or two until knocking again, hearing that the noise has stopped. Now, the sound of footsteps came closer to the door, making me back up a little bit before it opened.

"Glitchy?"

"Hey, Katsu..." I hesitantly looked up, seeing his red eyes staring down at me. He sighed, not saying anything back before opening the door wider. I walked in, taking off my shoes at the entrance.

This is a little awkward if you ask me, but I'm not going to say it out loud.

"Who's at the door?" Before I was able to say anything, Katsu beat me to it.

"(Y/N)," And just like that, he walked away from me- going into the kitchen. I decided to follow him, but I kept my distance just in case.

"Oh! Hey there sweetie!" As soon as I entered, I felt arms wrap around me, "How have you been?! I haven't seen you in forever!"

"I've been better," Mitsuki gave me a tight squeeze before letting go, "How have you been doing?"

"Well, it's the same old stuff," She laughed, shaking her head a little bit, "Just a lot of finishing touches before the next month's clothing line is out."

"Seems like a lot," I giggled, placing a hand over my mouth. My eyes drifted towards the other person in the room where a particular blonde was. He was looking at us, analyzing our actions towards each other. It wasn't until we caught each other gazes that I finally looked away.

This is so awkward...

"Hey, Katsuki!" I visually jumped, not expecting Mitsuki to call out at him, "Instead of checking out (Y/N), why don't you go get ready for school?"

"I WAS NOT DOING THAT!"

"Yeah, you were!" She sighed before putting her hand up, "Just go and get ready. I don't have time to argue with you." It looked like he was going to argue back but ended up complying. After waiting a minute, waiting for his door to slam shut, I turned back to Mitsuki.

"Was he really?"

"No," She giggled, "I was trying to get some kind of reaction out of him. After he came home, Katsuki locked himself in his room and only came down for dinner. No arguments, no talking- he was silent, meaning that something was troubling him."

"But I heard yelling earlier," I raised my eyebrow, trying to understand a little bit more, "When I was waiting at the door until I knocked the second time."

"Well, that was my attempt to talk to him, but he ended up blowing up," Mitsuki sighed before wrapping her arms around her chest, "Something must have triggered this kind of behavior to just snap like that. Usually, when something bothers him like this, he asks for some sort of advice- even if the phrasing is rude."

"That's Katsu for you," Turning my head to the side, I stared at the staircase leading up to the second floor, "I'll see what's up. It's kind of why I came here today because he didn't answer any of my texts last night. After the quirk assessment test, he ended up leaving right away. Katsu said something yesterday that I couldn't respond to correctly, and I thought that now he was ignoring me."

"What did he ask?"

"I'm not going to get into details, but he asked if I knew something that he didn't. But I found out entirely on my own due to my quirk, and it was confirmed. The thing is that it's not my place to tell him- I found out by accident. So if he wants his answer, then Katsu would have to talk about the issue with the person he has it with."

"Have you told him that?"

"No, because he stormed away. I was going to talk to him on the way to school, so we don't have any issues with each other-" My heart clenched as I stopped myself short, hearing footsteps coming down the stairs. I hope that Katsu wasn't listening in from upstairs. It would be a horrible situation for me if he did- fully knowing that I talked to his mom before I talked to him.

"Well, that was quick-"

"Shut it, old hag!" Katsu snapped, cutting off his mother in the process, "Let's just go!"

So even though there were 40 minutes until our train arrives, we left the house. The silence was awkward, to say the least, only the sound of our shoes hitting the concrete. But, at least the scenery kept me company, seeing all the birds flying around with their vibrant colors. Or the people and cars that went by us, having their little chats as they went to their destination.

The walk over to the train station is a little bit farther since we started at Katsu's house. So instead of walking for ten minutes, it would be a 20-minute walk. Not like I minded it, though, cause I was still waking up. Again, I am not a morning person- like at all, so it will be a bit until I fully wake up.

"So..." I started, trying to get rid of the tension between us, "Did you eat breakfast?"

"No," He bluntly replied, walking a little bit ahead of me.

"Okay. What are you hungry for?"

"I'm not hungry."

"Lier," My face pulls into a frown, already knowing where this conversation is going, "Come on! I know that you don't skip out on breakfast. So just tell me what your hungry for so we can get something in your system."

"I told you," Katsu turns his head slightly towards me, showing that he is looking at me with one of his red eyes, "I'm not hungry."

"Will you stop being so stubborn?!" At this point, my anger started spiking due to how annoying he was, "You know, you are starting to piss me off with your attitude. I came by your house today just to see if you were doing alright cause you didn't answer my text messages."

"I don't have to answer you, ya know?"

"Of course I know that! But how could I not worry?!"

"That's your problem, not mine." I clenched my fist together, wanting to just punch the shit out of him.

"Yeah, you're right!" Katsu stopped walking, turning his body around to see me, "It's a problem seeing how much I care about you that I had to make sure you were okay. I'm sorry for even thinking in the first place that you aren't okay."

"You're starting to get on my nerves, (Y/N)..." He growled out, but I didn't heed his warning and kept going.

"Good because for the past 25 minutes, you have been nothing but a pain in the ass."

"I didn't say or do anything!"

"That's the problem! You usually talk about anything that comes to mind! For example, talking about how annoying your mom is or what Zuku did to piss you off!"

"DON'T BRING DEKU INTO THIS SITUATION! HE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS?!" He walked up in front of me, being only a couple of inches away.

"Why?! Maybe it's because he is the reason why you have a stick up your ass?! Cause if my memory serves me right, after your little blowup yesterday, you ignored me the rest of the day?!"

"YOU LIED TO ME!"

"I DID NOT!" At this point, I was breathing heavily due to all the yelling back and forth, "ALL I DID WAS TO PROTECT HIM FROM YOU BLOWING HIM UP!"

"THAT'S THE SAME THING! YOU KNOW SOMETHING THAT I DON'T!"

"IT'S BECAUSE IT IS NOT MY PLACE TO TELL YOU ANYTHING- EVEN IF I DID KNOW!"

"AND WHY IS THAT?!"

"IF YOU REALLY WANTED TO KNOW, WHY DON'T YOU ASK HIM YOURSELF! IT'S NOT MY SECRET TO TELL! I WOULD DO THE SAME EXACT THING IF IT WERE YOU!"

"WHAT ABOUT ON WHAT YOU SAID TO THE OLD HAG?!"

"SHE IS YOUR MOTHER! I TRIED MY BEST TO REASSURE HER THAT YOU WOULD BE OKAY WITHOUT GIVING OUT TOO MUCH INFORMATION! IF YOU WERE ACTUALLY LISTENING IN TO THE CONVERSATION, YOU WOULD KNOW!"

"HOW DO I KNOW THAT YOU AREN'T LYING TO ME AGAIN?!" I was out of breath, but I knew that this argument was useless. There are more important things that I have to worry about, and this was not one of them.

"You know what? I'll leave that up to you to decide," Without losing eye contact with Katsu, I pulled out some money before slapping it onto his chest, "Go get yourself something to eat by yourself because I'm done with this argument."

And with that, I left.

My heart felt heavy with every step I took, with thoughts circling my head. Arguments aren't my thing and having one with one of your closest friends definitely slows down the mood. Knowing Katsu, he would be trying to give my money back, but I won't let him get the chance to. The both of us just need our space, and things will go back to normal.

I hope...

"WHAT?! YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME?!"

As soon as I arrived at school, I was pulled into Principal Nezu's office to discuss retaking the test. Almost all of the staff members were there to witness the talk and to finalize the decision. Unfortunately, everyone in this room made the room a little more cramped than I would like.

"I know that this idea doesn't favor you, but it is necessary for this situation."

"But how is that fair!" I stood up from the chair, placing my hands onto Nezu's desk, "When I do prove to you guys that I didn't cheat, I'll be missing out on the first day of classes!"

"(L/N), sit down," My head whipped over towards the voice, seeing that Mr. Aizawa was the one who spoke.

"Mr. Aizawa, you said that right after classes that I will be able to retake the test. So I agreed with those terms in mind that I would be able to go through the day to take those classes- especially the hero basic training at the end of the day. I ranked first in the entrance exam mock trial and even destroyed the zero-pointers with one touch. There would be no way to cheat on that trial since the whole thing was recorded."

"So you're saying that if you attend the last class of the day, you will be fine by that?" I turned my head to Principal Nezu, who was sitting completely still in his chair.

"Yes."

"If I would allow this, you can no longer be the grade representative and that it will go to next in line. But that would also mean for at least today, that you can only go to that class. This still means that you cannot go to any academic classes until your retake test has been graded. This is as far as we can negotiate without breaking school rules. Do you accept?"

"Will I be able to study the current class material on my own then while I wait?"

"Since it would be on your own time, yes."

"Then I accept," I smiled, feeling some sort of content in the way on how things turned out, "Besides, the grade representative should go to someone who is actually 14- not a 12-year-old."

"Okay, now that is settled," Sitting back down in my seat, I waited for him to continue, "For today, you will be in the U.A.'s Development Studio since the teacher there will be there for most of the day."

"Oh, okay," I smiled, thinking about my father, "That's fine with me. So I get to see what my dad experienced when he was here then."

"Oh yes. Your father graduated at UA with the Support class, correct?"

"That is what he told me." Principal Nezu smiled, putting his hands together.

"Well, then. It looks like the support class will have a bit of a surprise on their hands then. You are dismissed."

Honestly, this entire situation sucked- having to miss out on all academic classes. That would just mean that I have to study more to get all caught up. It's not like I have anything better to do until everything is finally finalized. Well, until the last class of the day, that is- at least I have that.

My footsteps echoed in the almost empty hallways as I got closer towards the U.A.'s Development Studio. Which I may add, is on the other side of the school, away from class 1-A. So it looks like I won't be running into any of my classmates anytime soon. However, students that were outside of their classrooms still took turns taking glances at me.

"I wonder why (L/N) is over here and not where the hero course is?"

"Maybe she was transferred to another class? You know, because of her age?"

"Nah, if she is going to a different class, then something must have happened. I heard the teachers were talking yesterday about her having to retake the written test."

"You think she cheated?"

"That is what I assume so, but (L/N) doesn't look like the type to do that."

"With a quirk like that, I wouldn't blame the teachers for thinking that."

I ignored the rest of the students, trying not to focus on the situation myself. It was bad enough that students here at UA have something against me. Most of them getting butthurt over a 12-year-old getting into the hero course and not them. However, it made me realize how many people looked down on me- making me feel even worse than I already do at this point.

It wasn't long until I reached the studio, evident due to the metal door separating it from the hallway. Taking a deep breath, I slid open the door a crack- waiting for something to happen.

By this point in life, I've always known how dangerous building support items are. At any given minute, it could either go one of three ways: 1) glitch out and spiral out of control, 2) do nothing due to something being hooked up incorrectly, and 3) working as attended.

More than 50% of the time, number one will happen- learned that from experience.

"Is it safe for me to enter?"

"Yes, you can come in!" A male's voice called out, making me slide the door open more. After shutting the door close behind me, I turned around, taking in my surroundings.

The studio was filled with various things such as tools, materials, and machinery for upcoming costume upgrades. Having metal tables scattered in the center of the room for workshops and multiple desks lining the walls. From what I could see, one desk in particular already had a project going on- probably another student.

My eyes drifted to the person in the room, who must have been the Development Studio teacher in charge. It was a skinny, short, shirtless man with semi-long spiky ginger hair hidden under his yellow metal helmet- in the shape of a rectangular excavator claw. The top piece of it was protruding outwards to cover his head, not letting me see his eyes, to finish off with a bottom part of what looked like a long jaw-guard.

However, despite his small frame, his hands were enormous. At the end of each fingertip, he had an orange L-shaped piece that acted as fingernails—wearing a pair of large, fingerless gray gloves with metal guards that extend up to his arms. The teacher was only wearing plain cyan pants and shoes.

It looked like he was wearing his hero costume, which I was not judging. However, if this were America, there would be no way that any school would allow his outfit. He would get dress coded as bad as a teenage girl who is showing off her shoulders.

"Hello!" I bowed before straightening myself up, looking at the only other person in the room, "My name is (Y/N) (L/N) from class 1-A. It's a pleasure to be spending most of the school day with you."

"No need to be so formal with me," He chuckled, waving his hands outwards, "My hero name is Power Loader; I'm in charge of the Development Studio."

"It's nice to meet you," I smiled before sliding my book bag off of my shoulders, "Where should I place my bag?"

"At any of the clear metal tables would do. But, of course, it's only the second day of classes, so there aren't any projects going on." I nodded, making my way over to one of the tables. Setting my bag down, I sat in one of the chairs- waiting for any more instructions.

But none of that happened, me only to sit there while Power Loader started working on one of the projects. I wasn't trying to be annoying or anything, but it piqued my interest in whatever device he was working on. It reminded me of one of my father's designs; however, it was left unfinished due to him passing away. It was only in the many books my dad wrote, with little keen details in the drawings.

It almost looked exactly like it.

I know that my dad worked with multiple support heroes, putting their brains together to think of a solution. Now that I think of it, the name Power Loader sounded familiar. Before he passed, he was working on a project for some sort of defense armor adapter- the one that took in physical attacks more efficiently before sending out the same kinetic-based attacks back to the attacker.

The idea started in old American comic books, the source of why superheroes came to reality. It is popular amongst the younger generation, more specifically quirkless individuals, to satisfy their want to be one of them. All being set in the time before the first quirk was discovered. When no one had any quirks at all, being close to 0% of the population "quirkless."

Honestly, that is where most of my dad's project ideas came from. Having it piqued his interest to see if it was possible in the first place. Of course, many of them failed due to it being only possible in those comic books. However, some were successful- like people with spider-like abilities.

Standing up, I walked over to Power Loader, being careful not to scare him. He looked deep in thought as a wave of frustration surrounded him. If I didn't know better, I would have run away from how intimidating it was. But due to my curiosity, that didn't stop me.

"Is that a kinetic armor adapter?" I asked, making the support hero jump away in fright, "Like the one in the comic book, Black Panther?" My eyes drifted to the device, confirming the design from memory. Picking it up, I examined it- making mental notes such as the weight and the texture.

"Y-Yeah," I turned my attention back to the hero, seeing him visually sweatdrop, "I've been stumped for years on how to make it work correctly."

"In any chance, were you working with (F/N) (L/N)?" Unfortunately, I couldn't get a read on him, not being able to see most of his face due to his headgear.

"Yes- wait. Do you know (F/N)? Like personally or in articles?"

"He was my father."

"Wait, really?!" His mood changed, switching more into a hopeful aura.

"Yes, really," I giggled, placing down the device carefully onto the desk, "I thought I recognized the design. It was in one of his last workbooks sketches before he passed away."

"So that's what happened," Power Loader sighed, turning slightly away from me, "All I got was that he was removed from the project. Ever since then, I have been struggling with the adapter. I only have the unfinished notes of our last meet-up from two and a half years ago."

"Well, you're in luck." Walking to my bookbag, I opened it- taking the said workbook out of my bag, "I tend to read this during my free time, something that I always have with me. It is more of a comfort item than anything, but it looks like you need it more than me."

"You just carry it around with you?"

"Yes, ever since I moved back to Japan," I walked back to him, presenting the book to him, "This one is the last of his books. It made the pain a little more bearable- makes me remember the good times with him." Then, placing the book down on the desk, flipping through the pages until I reached the page that wrote "KINETIC ADAPTER FOR ARMOR/SUITS."

"THAT'S IT!" He pointed out the little side note on the side marked as necessary, "How did I not think of that before! Thank you so much for showing me this!"

"No problem," I smiled, forcing back a giggle, "Take your time to read it over. There are others as well if you want to look at them. If you are going to use any of them, just make sure you credit my father. That is all I ask for."

"Of course I would!" Power Loader chuckled, putting his hand on top of my head to pat it, "Thank you so much. Um..."

"What?" Tilting my head to the side, I gave him a curious stare.

"Would you- um- want to help me?" He sweatdropped again, unsure of something, "If you want to, but I think I am going to need a second brain and hand."

"Sure!"

So with that, we got to work- making quick time to read my father's notes over. There were some spots that I had to help with due to the sloppy handwriting here and there. It reminded me of the times when he would sit in his office for hours on end. His green eyes were wandering over the paper in the late times of the night. Racking up his brain of equations and algorithms to make his project work.

The thought of it made my heart swell, making me feel like he was still with me. In the same room, giving me little hints at the back of my head as we worked- my body going into the same rhythm as my father's drum.

Minutes turned into hours, both Power Loader and I not even paying attention to the time. But alas, the Kinetic Adapter was finally finished- showing its finish glory to both of us. I sighed in content, overlooking my father's notes once more before putting my attention on the other person in the room.

"After three years, we have finally finished this," Power Loader shook his head as his voice cracked, probably feeling relief. His hands went up, grabbing his yellow headpiece before taking it off. Tears prickled in his blue eyes, but he held a smile.

"Don't cry, Power Loader!" My tears threatened to fall as well, just seeing the hero tearing up, "You're going to make me cry."

"Sorry," He dryly laughed, wiping his eyes with his gloved hand, "I'm so happy that this project is finally done. It's all thanks to you, (L/N)."

"We should be thanking my dad for writing everything in his notebooks," I smiled, grabbing the book into my hands, "I'm glad that I had the opportunity to finish one of his projects."

And with that, the waterworks started- tears streaming down my face as I held the book tighter into my chest. My body was shaking before sobs escaped my mouth, filling the room with my ugly crying. I felt so happy yet so sad that my father wasn't here to witness this.

I felt arms wrapped around me, letting me into their embrace. We were in this position for a while, me just uncontrollably sobbing against them. Me feeling like my father was the one who comforted me, not a teacher that goes to my school. It was something that I missed dearly, my father's soft words and hug for when I was overwhelmed. The feeling that I was doing my best and that it was okay to cry once in a while.

No words were said until I started to calm down- only sniffles coming out.

"You good there, Kiddo?"

"Y-Yeah," Power Loader let go of me, making me miss the warmth, "S-Sorry."

"There is no need to," He chuckled, putting his hand up to my head to pat it once more, "Your father would be proud of you, knowing that you finished one of his projects." I looked up, my eyes boring into his blue eyes.

"You think so?"

"I know so," A smile formed onto my face, feeling another pat on my head before his hand retreated, "I remember him talking about you at our last meeting. Saying on how much he was proud of you in your achievements."

"R-Really?" Power Loader nodded, now smiling back at me.

"Now, you should hurry along to class. The hero basic training will be starting soon." My eyes widen, looking down at my watch to see that he was right.

"Shit!" I quickly packed up, mentally cursing at myself for not keeping up with the time. Then, swinging my bookbag onto my shoulders, I ran to the door before stopping. I turned my head, looking at the support hero.

"Need something?"

"Will you be there for when I retake the test?" I asked, feeling out of place for asking that and knowing that I met the teacher a couple of hours ago. However, I felt comfortable around him already- feeling like he was a father-like figure. Something that would help calm my nerves down with Mr. Aizawa being in the same room as me.

"Do you want me to be there?" I nodded in response, "Okay, I'll be there." Then, smiling, I waved goodbye before heading my way over to class 1-A.

Instead of walking like a normal person, I ran through the halls. Weaving through students as they were coming back into their classes from their little break. I only had two minutes to get across the school, and this school is enormous. It would have been a five-minute walk, but I didn't have enough time to do that.

However, I wasn't paying attention and ran into someone. I felt myself fall back, but I felt a firm hand on my shoulder, preventing me from doing so.

"Careful there, Young (L/N)," I looked up, not expecting the number one hero, "Did you forget that there is no running in the halls?"

"S-Sorry!" I squeaked out loud, placing my feet entirely on the ground before stepping back, "I-I was in a rush and-"

"No need to worry," All Might laughed deeply, removing his hand from my shoulder, "I was just about to head over to 1-A. Would you care to accompany me, Young (L/N)?" I nodded before following the hero to class.

"So I see that you are wearing your Silver Age costume," All Might look down at me, giving off one of his famous smiles.

"You have a keen eye."

"Well, Zuku is one of my friends, so that is to be expected, right?" He chuckled in response, shaking his head in the process.

We kept talking, mainly about Zuku's process in the hero course. I was shocked, to say the least, that he was watching yesterday's quirk assessment test. Not like I blame him or anything, All Might is his mentor, after all. It was just a little bit creepy that he was just hiding someplace to watch us do series of tests.

Oh well, I don't have a problem with it.

All Might put his hand out to stop me, already in front of class 1-A's classroom. But, of course, I listened, stopping behind him while he put his hand up to his mouth as to tell me to be quiet. Nodding in response, he turned around, taking a deep breath before sliding open the door harshly.

"I AM HERE!" He leaned into the classroom, his hands on the door and frame to keep him from falling face-first, "COMING THROUGH THE DOOR LIKE A HERO!" All Might marched into the room, making me giggle at the sight of his silliness. The other students in the room reacted differently, calling out his name in shock and excitement. One of them even pointed out his hero costume, as I did earlier.

"I teach Hero Basic Training. It is a subject where you train in different ways to learn the basics of being a hero. You'll take the most units of this subject! Let's get right into it! This is what we'll do today-" All Might pulled out a sign out of nowhere, now presenting it to the class, "-Combat training!"

From here, I could hear Katsu and Zuku repeat the last two words that the hero said. One was sounding very confident and the other nervous. It didn't take a genius on who felt in which way. I was just worried, to say the least, remembering All Might's idea of my entrance.

He pulled out my hero costume's briefcase, showing the number of 21- meaning that it was time to shine. Putting my hands together, I turned it counterclockwise. Everything was turning black and white before I walked in. I walked over to my case, popping it open before changing into it. After I was done, I placed the briefcase back into All Might's hands before walking out again.

"Time Discourse."

"And to go with that are these!" Showing off my case first before his attention which to me, "Costumes made based on your Quirk registrations and requests you sent in before school started." With that queue, I walked back in as my hood covered a bit of my eyes.

A green light shined in front of me- my eyes and the little clock pendant glowing from activation of my quirk. The students stared at me in awe, some even going red face for some reason. I didn't care though, I was just being told what to do- which was standing in front of the class in my hero costume as an example.

"Young (L/N) will be helping me during the training, stepping in when the time matters. Due to her quirk, she would have an advantage against the rest of you. We want more of a fair combat training and thought it would be best for her to help out this time around instead of participating."

Looking up to All Might, I knew that there was another reason why I wasn't joining in on the training. It was evident due to the time clicking down on his head that at least once in the class period that he would have to detransform. Me being the safest option to make sure that no one knew what he looked like when out of form- since I have seen it with my very own eyes.

But, I was glad to help and didn't complain. After this, I would have to put most of my energy into retaking the written test and was happy that I wouldn't have to worry.

"Now then!" The teacher hit a button, having the rest of the class's costume briefcases slid out from the wall, "Get yourselves suited up, and then meet me at Training Ground Beta!"

Hello, my lovely readers! It's been a while, hasn't it?

I would like to say, sorry that this chapter took longer to publish than the rest of the chapters. From my last update, chapters are going to be going out randomly until I can get back onto my schedule of publishing.

Don't worry! I am doing a lot better and I am focusing more on myself. Hanging with friends and the other side of my family is helping me tremendously in getting my mood better. Of course, I am still talking to my therapist and my other doctor about everything that has happened so I do have a support group.

I hope that you guys enjoyed this chapter! Let me know if I missed anything or something that doesn't make sense and I'll fix it.

If you want to, vote and comment on your favorite part of this chapter. It could be on the emotional rollercoaster of a day or the little MCU detail ideas that I put in.

ANYWAYS! Always remember...
