Warrior Of God
Warrior Of God
)Ruthie's P.O.V.(
When Zuriel told me Uriah was going to make sure everything on Earth turned out okay, I was glad.
So I was feeling alright when I checked into the Bureau to meet with Serenity, and she greeted me with a smile as I stepped into her office. I smiled back, glad she wasn't in one of her moods.
"Hello Ruthie," she greeted.
"Hi Sren." I looked around. "Have you been decorating? It looks nice."
"Thank you." She grinned. "I really like the colors. Now, do you know why I arranged this appointment with you today?"
I shook my head.
"Well," she began. "I think you should put Irena in school this fall."
I smiled. "I was going to do that anyway."
She frowned. "No, not the school for all angels. I meant the school for warrior angels."
My smile disappeared, along with my good mood. "What? Why?"
"Because," she explained. "I think that girl's got potential. Besides, we don't get as many tough angels anymore, because most of them are not descended from demons. That's why we wanted Irena to meet our current recruits, the older kids in the Institute. I can arrange an appointment as soon as an hour from now."
I raised my eyebrows. "I'll have to talk to Zuriel about it."
Serenity smiled sweetly. "Oh, Ruthie. You already know he'll say yes."
==========
I took Irena's hand.
"Are you sure you want to be a warrior, sweetie?" I asked, concerned. She nodded vigorously.
"Of course I do, Mum!" She said excitedly. "I want to be a warrior! I'll get to make new friends, and I'll learn how to fight, and I can protect you and Dad and Xeya and Isaiah! It'll be great!"
I smiled down at her, almost sadly. "I'm glad you're excited."
The guards of the school nodded to me when we approached the doors.
"Ma'am," they said in unison, holding the doors open for us with a bow. I smiled at them as Irena tugged me inside, skipping down the hallway to the office. I picked her up after a moment because I almost couldn't keep her from getting away. I made sure to walk straight, keep my chin up.
Angels began coming to the sides of their open training rooms to watch the Dark Lord's wife walk down their halls with a dark angel child. They hadn't had a dark angel in a very long time, and there hadn't been a Dark Lord with a white winged spouse in some time. A trainer pulled off his reading glasses as I kept walking, Irena clinging to me like a leech.
"Ma'am," the secretary said, curtsying. "How can I help you?"
"I have an appointment with the principal in one minute and five seconds," I said, gently setting Irena down.
The secretary glanced at the clock, nodding. "You can go on in."
I smiled, walking past her with my hand in Irena's and walking through the threshold into the open-walled office. I could feel the eyes on my back, connected to a brain that was still trying to comprehend why I was here. Irena tugged on my sleeve.
"Mum, why are they staring at us?" She asked, glancing back at all the faces watching her.
"Because, sweetheart," I said. "You're special."
Irena smiled. "Okay."
I turned, still smiling. "Hello."
"Howdy ma'am," the man said, his southern accent thickened by his word choice. "Miss Koenigsberg mentioned you would like to consider enrolling your daughter in the Institute of Battle."
I nodded. "Yes, I would. She told me you needed more dark angels."
He raised an eyebrow. "Why? Does the Bureau want their vote?"
I frowned. "No, dark angels are tougher, in her words."
"Oh." He got up. "Welcome, just fill out these forms please."
"Thank you," I took the packet from him and led Irena to a chair in the hall where she walked around, patiently waiting. A few minutes later I rose, flipping the packet to the front page. I walked back to the principal, handing him the papers.
"Thanks," he said. I nodded to him.
"Irena, time to go," I called as I walked down the hall.
"Coming, Mum!" She said, running to catch up. "Can we visit Dad now?"
I nodded. "Yes, honey, after we talk to Auntie Sren. Then we can visit your father."
"Yay!" Irena said excitedly. I smiled. "I can't wait to tell him about the warrior school!"
