The Prophecy Of The Crow

The Prophecy Of The Crow

\Ruthies P.O.V./

I looked down at the planet, the reality of it all finally setting its heavy weight on my shoulders.
Reuben was in his proper spot, where he had been guided by 'mysterious voices', or angels that he could not see. I wrung my hands again, pacing back and forth as Zuriel tried to calm me.
"Ruthie," he said, standing and walking over to me. "You'll do fine. Just breathe."
I nodded, taking as big of a breath as I could and swallowing. Zuriel pulled my hair in front of my shoulders, glancing behind me. I turned and saw a small cage with an American Crow in it resting on a table. I walked up to the table, opening the cage. The bird didn't fly away like I expected it to, instead hopping out and sitting calmly on my hand.
"These are your birds," a familiar voice said. I whipped around.
Serenity stood there, twelve more crows hovering behind her, their wings beating rhythmically. Reuben looked towards me, squinting from the distance. I looked down, and saw my robes had turned white, sparkling stars hovering around my ankles.
"It's time," Serenity said, pushing me forward. "Go."
I nodded, looking back for one last time before turning and beginning to walk slowly and carefully down the path that had been marked. As I neared the halfway point I felt the air shiver around me when I flickered into Reuben's line of sight. His eyes widened slightly before returning to slits, because even his surprise could not overcome the bright light emanating from the sun behind me. When I reached the ground I began to speak, hovering in empty space.
"Reuben."
His head shot up.
"You have been wronging so many, for so little."
He opened his mouth to speak, but I stopped him.
"There is no excuse."
His curious gaze morphed into a glare.
"I have a message for you."
Wonder flickered behind his steady stare.
"When the first crow rises, and the last man falls, the darkness of the heavens will spread across the Earth like the plague."
Reuben's expressionless brows furrowed into a frown as I took a step back, bent my head, and faded from his view.
Once I knew I was invisible again I spun on my heel, rushing back up the path and into the safety of Zuriel's waiting arms.

"November 5th is approaching," he said.
I folded my hands. "Yes, sir."
"You know what that means." He turned to the window, resting his hands on the sill.
"Of course, sir."
"I have your Mission." He looked up at the moon. "It took a while to decide. But I think you're ready for the task I'm assigning you."
I nodded.
"You'll be visiting a couple who recently lost their children to murder and suicide." He was observing the treetops now. "Your goal is to make the man see, Fi."
"As I will, sir."
"Good." He looked back to the moon. "Now go, bid him goodbye."
I nodded, rising.
"Oh and Fi?"
I looked over my shoulder. "Sir?"
He finally looked at me, his black eyes piercing into mine. "Don't get lost."
