The Crack In The Sky

The Crack In The Sky

}Jenni's P.O.V.{

When I was walking home I noticed storm clouds gathering on the horizon, threatening to drench the Earth at any given moment. I came to Mariana's clearing, and she quickly stood and rushed across the open ground so we could start heading back home as soon as possible. Lightning cracked across the sky, splitting the brooding clouds as thunder clapped in accordance with the white flash. Mariana and I pulled the hoods of our raincoats over our heads as we hurried along, soaked in fresh rainwater. Her drawings were clutched to her chest inside the blue jacket, held in the opposite hands of her drawing utensils. Lightning split the sky again as the rain drummed against the ground, pounding puddles into the soft Earth. The tavern came into sight, still at a distance, but in sight none the less. I sped up a little, making sure Mariana kept up with me. A figure appeared just outside the door, waiting for us. When we got closer I recognized the figure as Dad, and he pulled the door shut behind us against the howling wind. I glared at him and stormed out, down the hatch and into our room, Mariana not far behind.
"The world is broken, Jenni," Mariana whispered. "And it's not your job to fix it."
I turned to her. "The world's always been broken. And besides, it's not the world that needs fixing."
She tilted her head, confused. "Then what needs fixing?"
I smiled tightly. "The sky. It's cracked."
