Part 54
Third person point of view:
"When did you learn how to shoot a bow and arrow?" Natasha screamed while still running until they were in the treeline.
"I didn't." Bucky yelled once they had paused and he saw Clint walking over.
"What are you talking about? How..." Natasha trailed off as she turned her head and saw Clint walking over.
"Hi." He said awkwardly.
"I haven't seen you for over three months and all you say is hi!" Natasha screamed over the noise of the explosions that were happening in the background and were beginning to die down. After they had stopped Clint spoke up again.
"Please tell me you guys hear that?" Clint asked, noticing the crying baby for the first time.
"Yes of course I hear it dumbass!" Natasha shouted gently setting the backpack down and taking out the baby. "James give me your jacket from the car I don't have a blanket."
Bucky jogged the short distance over to the nearby jeep and first went to the backseat to check on his judgement call, but not finding her so he quickly ran over to Natasha and threw the jacket to Clint without regard for what it hit and ran off.
"James! James! Where are you going?" Natasha shouted while covering the child with the jacket that Clint had waked over and given her. Clint was now standing just behind Natasha so he could look at the screaming child's face.
"My judgement call never made it! I'm going back over to look for her!" He called over his shoulder.
"Judgement call? What are you guys talking about? What the hell is going on?"
"Clint I don't have time to explain this! Go with James and look for a little girl she's probably five!" Natasha barked.
Clint did what he was told and ran after Bucky at a full sprint, when he finally caught up with him Bucky was running around and shouting in the field full of bodies while the fire at the facility raged on.
"Cara! Cara! Come out! It's OK! It's me! You're safe now!" He screamed while searching all around the cars and even under some of the dead bodies.
"Bucky! Who are you looking for?"
"A little girl. She's probably about five, really small, long black hair. Did you see her while we were inside?" He asked frantic.
"No, I didn't. Check inside the cars, she might have been smart and hidden in them when the bullets were flying." Clint said coming up to the last S.U.V where Bucky was standing still behind it.
"Don't bother." Bucky choked out, staring at the little girl's, cold, dead body. The little girl was lying face up in a pile of blood covered snow, with her throat slit and her beautiful, brown doe eyes staring up at the cold winter sky.
"What happened?"
"It doesn't matter. We need to worry about the child that is still alive right now." Bucky whispered, bending down to shut the little girl's eyes and then turning to go back to the treeline and wiping away the tears that had started to fall from his eyes.
When the pair arrived the saw Natasha still trying to calm the screaming baby who had started coughing.
"Where's the girl?
"Dead. What are we doing about the baby?" Bucky growled.
"Leaving it at an adoption agency obviously." Natasha said without thinking.
The hopeful look in Clint's eyes and the smile on his face disappeared as he joined Natasha's train of thought. "Of course. We aren't doing it here. Maybe we could leave it in Budapest, we have a house there in case the Red Room tries to take it back. Or we could leave them in Canada, I've heard that they have an excellent foster program."
"Or we could leave her in London. The city is beautiful there and they have great schools. Or we could do France, she could become multilingual there." Natasha replied without looking up from the child who had finally stopped crying and was only coughing.
"Oh my god! Are you two serious right now?" Bucky shouted exasperated.
"What are you talking about? I don't want to leave the baby in London, I haven't heard much about their adoption programs." Clint continued, almost ignoring Bucky.
"What I'm talking about is why aren't you two going to keep the kid! You both want it. You guys have been having mental breakdowns continuously for the past three months because you lost your child, she could be your second chance!"
Natasha doesn't say anything and only looks up from the baby momentarily to look at Clint. So he speaks first. "I mean Tasha, we could do it. We have all of the stuff, and I mean we would know she would be safe with us."
Natasha looks over at Bucky and then back at Clint. "No! I don't know what's wrong with her. I can't go through the pain of losing another child. I can't do it. I just can't. I'm sorry."
"Natasha who is more prepared and qualified to deal with a kid who could potentially be really messed up than the Avengers. I mean we have the two smartest people in the world right at our fingertips not mention a god who could take her to Asgard depending on what's wrong with her plus we have unlimited resources. You guys could do it! Clint has a good point we already have all of the baby stuff at the tower, I mean it's in storage but still."
Natasha looks at Clint again and he comes to her rescue. "We can finish talking about this later, but we need to make sure the kid is going to be OK before we just leave it at an adoption agency. Barnes I need you to go the tower ahead of us and warn Bruce, tell him this kid is going to need the works. Try and get some stuff out of storage if you can, we are going to be right behind you but we need to make a stop at a baby store to get some emergency supplies." Clint said without deciding one way or another, but buying himself more time to convince Natasha that they should keep the kid.
"But, what about the fact that Natasha hasn't put the kid down, let alone stopped looking at it since we got it out of immediate danger?" Bucky asked threateningly.
"James not now! I can't deal with this right now! Just please do as Clint says and make sure no one else knows because then they are going to get attached and if she dies they'll only be disappointed again!" Natasha screamed overwhelmed, while still trying to get the baby to stop coughing.
"Fine, but if you don't keep her you're making a mistake." Bucky said angrily. He got into the jeep and drove quickly back to his plane as Clint guided Natasha to a clearing about a hundred yards away where he had stored his jet. When he arrived he immediately started it up and turned the heater on to full blast to try and warm up the baby before they even got in the air.
"Thanks for saving me back there." Natasha rushed apprehensively.
"Don't worry about. It's what we do. Where do you want me to stop? I was thinking outside of Russia in case there are any strays sticking around for us."
"Fly over to Finland. It's the closest safe spot. I don't want to wait any longer than we have to." Natasha decided as Clint got the plane in the air.
The planes navigation system told them that they would be landing in one hour at a small airport, just outside a city. Clint stared at Natasha for a while, watching her obsess over the small child who was still having major coughing spasms.
"So it's a girl?" He asked quietly.
"Yes. How much longer until we land. I want to get something for her to stop coughing, it's scaring me."
"Probably about ten minutes. I'll run into the city grab some supplies. I'll get a car seat so we can put her in the back, maybe . I'll also get formula and some other essentials just until we can get back to Stark. You should stay here, stay with our kid... I mean the kid. You aren't really dressed to be seen in public."
"Clint. I can't keep her I don't know what's wrong with her. If she dies, I won't be able to handle it. I can't get attached, that's the reason Elizabeth died, that's the reason they killed her. I can't do that to another child. Plus we don't know what kind of experimenting they did to her there. We have no idea what we are walking into."
"But Natasha, here's the thing. You took care of the Red Room they can't hurt you anymore, they can't hurt us anymore. If we keep the kid and she dies because of health complications that isn't your fault, that's just life telling us that it wasn't meant to be. But she isn't going to die, because we're going to get her to Bruce and she's going to be fine. It's going to be fine, it's going to be OK. Remember what I promised you, I promised you when you woke up that this wasn't the end, that there was going to be something else. This is our something else Tasha, and I know there's a lot we need to talk about and figure out, but we can do it. As long as we are together we can do anything."
"I don't know OK, I just don't know. I..." The navigation system beeped signalling Clint that he needed to land the plane. "We can finish this later. We need to hurry and get her back to Stark so we can get her to Bruce. Once we get back in the air we need to call Bruce." Natasha finished, trying to avoid telling Clint how she really felt.
Clint wanted to push the conversation, but knew that he needed to get the supplies and pushing Natasha anymore was going to do the opposite of what he wanted it to do. Clint landed the plane and drove it over to a hangar, where a Finnish border officer approached the plane.
"Hello. I am here on official S.H.I.E.L.D business. We're transporting a package that is essential to survival of the world as we know it. I need a rental car to take me into town and I need one of your jockeys to gas up my plane." Clint lied while showing the officer his badge.
"If that is the case why do you have a child with you?" He asked in heavily accented English
"Because, she's the package." Clint said with a smirk.
"Understood. I will have my men get you what you requested."
Clint closed the door and looked at Natasha as he got up to leave the plane.
"Since when did you get so good at lying?"
"You're not the only super spy on the team. I'll be back, as soon as I get back we'll get back in the air and on the way to the tower. We'll call Bruce and figure out what we can do to get in unseen and what we can do for the kid." Clint called out over his shoulder while walking towards the officer.
Clint walked with the officer to the car that he had waiting for him. Clint got in and drove away immediately, it wasn't long until he was in the city and was stopped at the nearest baby store. He grabbed all of the things he thought that they would need to hold them over until they got back to the tower. he grabbed diapers, a blanket, clothes, formula and a car seat, along with other things. When he brought it to the counter to ring it up the cashier started asking him questions in English.
"Is this for your child? When is your wife due?" She asked kindly.
"Oh no. It's for my sister, I forgot that her baby shower was today so I am doing some last minute shopping." He easily lied, but if you knew him well there was a hint of sadness in his eyes and voice.
"Oh that's very nice of you, well have a good day." She said with a smile handing him his bags. Clint returned the smile and took the bags. He loaded them into the car and drove away. When He arrived back at the airfield the plane was already gassed up and ready to get back in the air. Clint climbed into the jet and sat down in the pilot seat next to the extremely stressed out and worried Natasha.
"Thank god you're back. Where's the stuff? Did you get clothes?""
"Yeah it's in the back. Do you want me to get the plane in the air first or get the stuff?"
"Get in the air, then get me the stuff. The faster we get in the air, the faster we can get to Bruce, and the better chance our kid will have."
"Our kid? Are you sure Tasha?"
"No, but you need to get the plane in the air." She ordered the smiling and distracted Clint.
Clint got the plane in the air and went to the back to grab some of the bags and bring them to Natasha.
"Here's the cough syrup. Let me hold her while you dose it out. You can also get the clothes out, there's a blanket in there too." He said holding his hands out to take the baby.
"No it's fine. Let's just go to the back, there's more space there anyway."
"But you just said. Tasha, let me hold her it's fine, I can do it."
"Clint I know what I said, but just do what I'm telling you to do now!" Natasha screamed getting up.
"Natasha, what's going on? I don't understand."
"We can't talk about it right now. The kid just keeps getting worse and I'm getting worried. Go get your phone while I give the kid the medicine!" Natasha shouted as the kid started coughing, waking herself up from her nap.
"OK. OK. Stop yelling, you're just going to upset her more." Clint soothed, trying to calm down both Natasha and the baby. Clint brought his phone back to her and knelt down to change the baby's diaper.
"Bruce are you there? Can you here me?" Natasha asked into the phone.
"Yeah I hear you. What's wrong, are you almost back?"
"Kinda, we just left Finland to pick up supplies. Bucky's there right?"
"No not yet but he called. I'm setting stuff up in your guys private medical bay. Is that the kid I hear?"
"Yeah. She won't stop crying and coughing we've tried everything, but nothing's working." Natasha said while going to pick up the kid from Clint.
"Is Clint there, put him on the phone if you're going to hold the kid, or give the kid to him. I can't hear you over the crying."
"Clint talk to Bruce." Natasha said throwing him the phone.
"Hi Bruce. How's it going?" Clint asked trying to lighten the mood.
"Barton this is not the time for jokes!" Natasha screamed
"Right sorry. OK, so the kid won't stop coughing or crying and we've tried everything." Clint said while turning his back to Natasha.
"OK, define everything."
"We've tried baby cough syrup, keeping her warm, keeping her cold, dressing her, not dressing her, I think Nat's going to try feeding her next, but I don't know if feeding her's the right idea because if she throws up she might choke."
"Crap, can you tell if she's breathing OK, are her lips or fingers blue? I'm trying to think of what could help, but she isn't in front of me so I don't know what I'm working with. Did she stop crying?"
Clint turned around to look at the baby and noticed that she had stopped crying because Natasha had started to breastfeed the child.
"Clint. Clint. What's wrong is she not breathing, if she isn't start C.P.R, but don't use your full hand or strength, you'll crack her sternum." Bruce rushed panicked while he got into the elevator with a push cart full of supplies.
"No, nothing's wrong I'm just really shocked because we are totally keeping the kid now."
"What? What changed? I thought Natasha said no."
"Well she kinda did, but she started to say I don't know and maybe, but now she's breastfeeding the kid. She's ours now Bruce, we are totally keeping the kid!" Clint exalted.
"I did not completely say we were keeping it. I only did this out of necessity, she wasn't taking the bottle. Barton can you tell Bruce that we need to facetime him? I don't know if I'm doing this right."
"She also didn't say no, but you're back to Barton now? Hold on, I'm going to call you right back but I'll facetime you guys."
Clint hung up the phone and walked over to Natasha who was still feeding the child.
"You look adorable you know. You'll be a great mom, I've never seen you look more beautiful than you do now, other than when you were pregnant."
"Barton complimenting me isn't going to make me decide any quicker. I'm just scared and I want her to have the best chance possible."
"I know, but I'm only telling you the truth. Do you want me to get you a bandage, I just noticed that you're still bleeding. We're still married right? You're still my partner and the love of my life."
"Clint. I know we need to talk about this, but not right now. Bruce is calling"
Clint wanted to answer and wanted to push the topic, but he resisted, he knew that they needed to focus on the kid right now, he knew that they needed to focus on their kid, their marital problems could wait until they landed at the tower. Clint sighed and picked the phone so that he could immediately see Natasha and the baby when the call connected. When it connected Bruce was as shocked as Clint was.
"Holy crap Clint! You're right, you guys are totally keeping the kid."
"Bruce not now. Natasha doesn't think she's doing it right, please tell her she's fine." Clint huffed as he brought the phone closer.
"Yeah Nat, you look fine to me, but if she starts coughing or having any sort of problem at all, take her off. She's really tiny, do you guys have any clue how old she is?"
"No, not a clue, if she gets fussy do I take her off?"
"Yes. Oh fuck! Someone's coming, I have to go. Text me if you have problems." Bruce rushed pushing the cart out of the way for when Tony came down to investigate what was going on.
"Well, great. I can't have anyone finding out about the kid or that we are back. What are we going to do?" Natasha asked exhausted while sitting down with the kid.
"Well, I have an idea. You aren't going to like it, but it's an idea. What if you called your dad? Told him what is going on, he would understand. He could get everyone out of the tower and we could make sure that Jarvis doesn't tell anyone. We are about an hour and a half out so we would have to do it soon." He said while going to check how long that they had left on the flight.
"I don't want to call him. I don't even know if he still wants me around. I abandoned him and Maria. I don't think that it's a good idea, plus what would I even tell him? Hey I'm sorry for disappearing on you for three and a half months, but I need a favor."
"Well not exactly that, but yeah. Natasha, Fury loves you to death, he would do anything for you and Maria. You guys are his daughters and no matter what a daughter does their father loves them no matter what. He will understand, I've been talking to him, he misses you like crazy. Just call him, see what he says."
"Over ten years and we're still asking for him to cover for us." Natasha sighed, shook her head and looked down at the child again, "It can't hurt. Give me the phone I'll call him."
"Clint. Do you have her, is she safe?"
"Hi Nick." Natasha said quietly into the phone while taking off the now sleeping baby and fixing her suit.
"Natasha? Is that really you? Are you OK, why do you have Clint's phone?"
"Yeah it's me. Surprise! I'm not dead and I'm really sorry, but I need your help, I'll explain it later." Natasha said as the baby started moving in her arms.
"Really Natasha? What the fuck? It's good to know that you aren't dead. What do you mean you need my help? What are you going to explain later?" Fury screamed, into the phone while securing his office.
"Dad it's a really long story and I don't have the time or energy to explain it right now, but I need you to get everyone out of the tower except for Bruce and Bucky."
"Fine, I'll do it but why?"
"I'm going back there and I don't want them knowing yet, I'll tell them eventually just not now. I'll explain everything, I just can't right now. Please?"
"I'll do it. Get back here safely and quickly please. We have a lot to discuss." He ordered then hung up the phone and began creating a plan to get all of the Avengers out of the tower. About forty-five minutes later he calls Tony on his cell phone.
"This is Stark. How can I help you today, director Fury?" Tony asked cheerfully, still glad that Bruce had heard something from Natasha.
"I need all of you guys to be down at headquarters in half an hour, but you can't bring Banner or Barnes, it's about Natasha."
"How bad is it? Is Natasha going to make it?" Tony asked apprehensively.
"I'll explain it to all of you when you get here, just get here, we're low on time. Make sure you bring Pepper here too, she needs to hear this." Fury growled and then hung up the phone and put on a fake smile to talk to Bruce.
"Hey Bruce. I've got to go, Fury needs me at S.H.I.E.L.D, can you stay here and watch the tower." He mentioned while texting Pepper and the others what was happening.
"Yeah sure, what's up?" Bruce asked not being in on Fury's plan
"Oh it's probably nothing, just another security update or whatever the old pirate needs me for."
"Oh OK cool. I'll see you when you get back." Bruce called out as Tony walked out of the lab to meet the others in the kitchen so they could all arrive together.
What no one noticed in all of the commotion of trying to get to S.H.I.E.L.D as soon as possible was Bucky enter the tower undetected and sneak down to the medical bay that was under Clint and Natasha's floor, where Bruce was now hiding.
"Bucky. Good you're here. Natasha and Clint should be landing in fifteen minutes. From the updates I've been getting the kid isn't doing well. Can you help me finish setting up before they get here?"
"Yeah. Where was everyone going?" He asked while picking up a machine and moving it to where Bruce was telling him.
"Everyone was leaving? Huh weird. I thought that it was only Tony. Oh well, we don't have time to worry about it though. Plus it'll be better this way, Natasha and Clint can get in without people asking questions." Bruce said while turning machines on and making sure everything would be ready to go for when they arrived.
"You're right. Natasha doesn't want them to know that she doesn't want to keep the kid because she's too afraid." Bucky said with anger and annoyance in his voice.
"Oh you don't know. Nat basically changed her mind, they have almost decided that they are going to keep her. Natasha's just scared because she doesn't know what the Red Room did to her. She doesn't another kid to have to go through the same stuff she did, she doesn't want commit to something she doesn't know about, because that's what happened with Elizabeth."
"Well that's what life is. Life is committing to things you don't know about and hoping for the best and dealing with what they get." Bucky grumbled as Natasha and Clint walked in behind him, with Clint carrying the car seat that held the sleeping baby.
