Part 53
Third person point of view:
Bucky set his plane down in a clearing in a thick grove of trees right next to the coordinates that Natasha had sent him and he had in turn sent to Clint, who was still on his way. Bucky walked out of the plane and was met with Natasha holding a gun to him.
"Relax it's just me." He said coming out of the jet with his hands up.
"Good. How many weapons did you bring? We should be expecting them to put up a good fight." Natasha asked trying to focus on the mission.
"I cleared out my storage locker so we should have enough, plus whatever you brought." Bucky said going back in and bringing out the duffel bags two at a time. When he returned with all of the bags Natasha was looking at the first one quietly so he spoke up.
"So, you want to tell me what's been going on? Where you've been? Why the hell we are going after them in the middle of winter, and why we are all of a sudden doing it?" He asked sarcastically.
"They killed Elizabeth. They murdered my daughter, they are the reason she is dead. I saw no point in waiting a second longer to destroy the bastards who took everything from me." Natasha growled angrily.
"Good point. But uh how do you know this? I don't doubt you, but you and I have a tendency to run ops on bad intelligence." Bucky said walking around to stand in front of Natasha to stall her.
"This isn't bad intelligence I checked myself and I know my source is good. OK? Why are you all of a sudden so hesitant to take down the bastards who tortured us and nearly murdered us on a daily basis, and are responsible for your niece and my daughters death?" Natasha screamed.
"Natalia, what's going on? I've never seen you like this."
"Yeah well, I've never lost a child before, especially not my child that I had with the man that I love, who blames me for our daughters death." She said without looking up from the second and third duffel bags.
"Talia, look at me." Bucky said squatting down and guiding her face to look at his. "Clint doesn't blame you for this, he never has. I sat there and watched him worry and obsess over you every minute of every day that you were in a coma. After you woke up he thought you were going to stay or at least run with him so you guys could deal with this together. He was heartbroken when you left and he has been ever since, which is why he didn't start looking for you until a month ago. Clint doesn't blame you for this, he blames himself for doing this to you, for putting you through all of this."
Natasha pulled her face out of his light grasp and stood up shaking her head and imperceptibly wipe the tears that had started coming from her eyes. "We better get going, we still have about an hour and a half drive."
"What car are we taking?"
"A jeep I encountered. Come on we don't have all day. I would like to put these bastards in their graves by sundown." She said grabbing two of the duffels and walking them over to a jeep that was hidden behind a tree.
"Yeah. I'm right behind you, let me grab my jacket because I don't expect you to be running the heater. I've always hated how much you love the cold." Bucky yelled over to her and running into the plane to grab his jacket and phone to tell Clint the updated location. He quickly grabbed his things and made his way over to the jeep and threw all of the bags in the back and hopped into the front seat.
"So do they know we're coming?"
"I'm pretty sure they do. I think my cab driver tipped them off, I don't care though, I want a good fight."
"How much force are we putting into this? I know you've tried going after them before, but they kept sprouting back up."
"I am going to make sure that they never see the light of day again. I will hurt them so bad that their ghosts won't even be able to find their graves. They aren't going to rise up again because all of those other times I was trying to follow my rules. This time there is no rules. They killed my daughter I will show them no mercy. They brought this upon themselves, the Red Death is coming, and this time I am taking no prisoners. This isn't just a fight, this is a war that they started and I am going to finish." Natasha seethed.
"Now you sound more like you. Come on, let's go end this fight once and for all. Let's show them how powerful of a team the Black Widow and Winter Soldier are. Let's go give 'em hell." Bucky said with a vengeful look in his eyes.
Natasha started the car and they drove for an hour and a half in silence, with Bucky checking his phone every few minutes to make sure Clint was still headed the right direction and had brought enough weapons because with the way Natasha was talking they were going to need all of the ammunition that they could get their hands on. When the trees started to thin out Natasha stopped the car and hopped out with Bucky trailing behind.
"The facility is right there. We need to expect a big fight, they aren't going to take this laying down, we aren't taking prisoners."
"What if there's kids?" Bucky asks while finishing gearing up and watching Natasha do the same.
"Judgement call. Give them a choice."
"Understood. What's our tactic?"
"We are going to make entry, through the front gates. We want them to know that we are coming. From the satellite photos I have seen we should expect a strong resistance at the front lines. Once we get past the initial wave we need to get in and systematically destroy them. It's the same base we came from so it's an even playing field, once we get through the gates show them no mercy. We are ending them here and now." Natasha ordered while handing Bucky his coms device.
The pair finished gearing up and each took a backpack full of weapons and ammunition and set out for the front gates. Bucky helped Natasha over the front gate with a boost and he climbed over quickly after. The two marched toward the building with machine guns in hand, they had got forty feet in when the bullets started flying. Bucky quickly throws a grenade and takes out the gattling guns and the gunners manning them. Natasha opens fire on the swarm of guards that were approaching as Bucky puts his metal arm in front of her head as a shield. The gunfire back and forward continues until Bucky and Natasha both shoot the last of the first wave of guards in the head at the same time.
The pair advance and are immediately swarmed by another wave, this time made up of both men and women. Bucky at first is only firing at the men and only shoots the women if they directly threaten his or Natasha's safety until Natasha yells over the fray.
"I told you no mercy! Stop hesitating! They won't hesitate to kill you!" She yelled with a fury in her eyes.
Bucky nods as the two begin to advance with the pair making much quicker progress, when they reach the front door Bucky pulls on it only to find it locked. Natasha covers him as he gets a device to blow open the door out and sticks it on. Natasha had dispatched of the last of the guards and reloaded her weapon and still stood on watch as Bucky charged the device.
"Stay back! It's about to blow, let me be the first one in. Cover me!" He shouts.
"Not a chance!" She yells back and storms in as soon as the doors were open.
Natasha storms in and starts firing rapidly. She takes down the first two with ease and steps over their bloody corpses into the heart of the facility with Bucky trailing behind her covering her back. The building was eerily quiet for the battle that was going on. The main entryway branched off into two main hallways. Bucky took the one on the right and Natasha the one on the left, as they took to their separate hallways they didn't notice the commotion that was going on outside.
"Bucky! Nat! Natasha! Where are you guys?" Clint screamed as he entered the front gates and saw the path of destruction that they had left. Clint turned because he heard a grumbling sound and saw armored S.U.V's coming in the distance, bringing in reinforcements.
"Shit!" Clint shouted and made his way up into the nearest tree and started creating his snipers nest. The elegantly dressed reinforcements got out of the cars and started unsheathing knifes and unholstering guns and began to make their way into the building. Clint sat down and began picking them off one by one, never missing a shot as always, he was able to stop them from entering and they began searching for him. He wanted to keep them occupied and out of the building so he started playing with them, never firing in a predictable pattern, and timing shots randomly. After a few minutes of playing with Clint they took cover behind their vehicles to form some sort of plan.
Natasha made her way dispatching of the girls that got in her way. She was midway down the corridor and counting steps as she always did. She knew it was forty-seven steps from the first branch off to a hallway and she had already gone forty-three. She was hesitant going up to the hallway knowing that she could be attacked on one or both sides at any moment and just steps out of the way as a girl, around thirteen charges her. The girl circles back after her first failed attempt and stands nose to nose with Natasha, but waits for her to make the first move. Natasha had already dispatched of her machine gun at this point and lowers her pistol to try and talk to the girl.
"I am going to give you three options. One, you can run away and I'll pretend I never saw you, you can have a fresh start. Two, you can fight with me to take down the bastards that have put you through living hell, or three, you can fight me and I will do what I have to do." Natasha says in Russian.
The thin blonde girl smirks and responds in the same tongue. "And why would I do that? They have given me everything, a life, a purpose, a reason to fight. Why would I help you, you are a traitor to us all, you were the one we relied on and you abandoned us. I will stay and I will fight. I will make my teachers proud."
"Suit yourself. I won't show you any mercy because you are young."
"Good. You would just be even more of a disappointment than you already are."
The fight begins and Natasha makes good on her promise. The girl's form is sloppy and you can easily tell she has not been trained for very long, or very well. Natasha uses a few well timed kicks and punches and the girl is sent sprawling to the floor. While the girl is on the ground she reaches for a knife and charges Natasha with it. Natasha easily sidesteps and uses the girls recklessness against her. She catches the girls hand and twists it ever so slightly to avoid being stabbed, what Natasha wasn't counting on was the girl losing her footing on the hardwood and falling, pressing the knife into her own sternum instead of Natasha's. The girl fell and Natasha rolled her over to look at her.
"I told you I would take no mercy. You should have went with the first option." She said in English to the not breathing girl.
Natasha cracks her neck and moves on down the hallway, and calls out for Bucky over the coms. "James I'm almost to the end of the hallway, I'm going to clear the ballet room before I meet you in the main control room, we'll clear the rest of the rooms from there."
"Understood." He whispered trying to make sure he didn't draw any unwanted attention to himself. Bucky had not yet encountered another girl, he had only encountered the male guards and teachers who he disposed of easily, he knew they were torturers and murderers, they didn't deserve a second chance. As he came around a bend in the hallway he was met with the sight of a terrified little girl no older than the age of five. The girl looked at him with hazelnut doe eyes that were partially obscured by her long curly black hair. When she saw him her face went even paler than it already was, she tried to run, but she was cornered so she simply stared at Bucky terrified. Bucky put his gun back in his holster after he checked for anyone that might be using the little girl as bait and kneeled down to her level.
"Hi there sweetie. It's OK, I won't hurt you I swear. Come here." He said sweetly to her in Russian. The girl only turned to hide her face away from Bucky as he came closer. So he turned her around so that she could see him.
"I promise I won't hurt you little one. What's your name?" He asked her again in Russian.
"My name is Cara. They told me that you would hurt me, that you would kill me. Please don't" The little girl pleaded with tears streaming down her face.
"Oh no Cara I won't hurt you. I promise, see I put the guns away I put the bad things away. Did the mean people do this to you?" He asked her while holding her face and wiping away the tears that were only coming out of one eye because the other was swollen shut and purple.
"Yes. Please do not hurt me. I just want to go home!" The girl pleaded wrapping her arms around Bucky's neck and he wrapped his arms around her trying to make her feel safe in the middle of a war, she was only a child she didn't understand what was happening, she just wanted it all to stop, she wanted to go home. Bucky made that call that he would not harm the little girl he would only help her, he would take her back to the States with him because he knew that the little girls family was already dead, it was what the Red Room did.
"Shhhh! It's OK. I'll protect you, I'll keep you safe don't worry. I'll take you somewhere safe." He whispered trying to calm the girl's crying. He was smoothing out her curly hair and thinking of the amount of times he did this for other girls in the Red Room, of the amount of times he did this for Natasha.
"Cara. I know you're scared and I know you just want this to all to be over, and it will be soon but I need you to be brave for me for just a few more minutes. I have to go take care of the big meanies who did that to your pretty little face OK, but you can't come with me so I need you to get to the car that is parked in the forest. It's black, and kind of tall, it's shaped like a box. I need you to get there so I can get you somewhere safe." He said pulling her body away from his so that he could look at her and wiping away the tears.
"No! No! No! Please don't leave me you said you would keep me safe!" She screamed through the sobs.
"Shhh! Shhh! Cara I need you to keep quiet for me. I will keep you safe I promise, but I can't do it if you are here. See look at this." Bucky said pulling out a Captain America shield pin from his pocket and showing it to the girl. "Do you know what this is?"
"It is the shield of Captain America, they tell me he is bad." She said marginally slowing her crying to hold the pin in her hand.
"No Cara. It is a symbol of protection. I work with Captain America, he is my best friend. He is a good guy. If you keep this with you it will keep you safe." He said pinning it on to the girls shirt. "It will be like I am right there with you. If you see a man with a bow and arrow and you show him this he will keep you safe. It will be OK. You just need to be brave for a few more minutes for me. I just need you to be brave for me Cara, can you do that for me?" He asked the little girl who had almost stopped crying.
The little girl nodded her head and whispered. "I will be brave for you. I will see you in a few minutes. You will come and get me right?"
"Yes of course Cara. I will come get you as soon as I am done. Just a few more minutes and this will all be over I promise. Now when you get to the car I want you to hide in the back seat so no one can see you OK?" He said wrapping her in another tight hug. The girl wrapped her tiny arms around Bucky's neck and turned to go whispering to herself in Russian the entire time.
Bucky stood up and checked to make sure there was no one else around before he called Natasha in on the coms. "Natasha, I made a judgement call that you aren't going to like."
"How old was she?" Natasha sighed stopping before she went to clear the ballet room.
"Not older than five. She just wanted to go home. I'm sorry, I couldn't do it."
"It's fine, she was too little to understand what was going on anyway. What did you do with her, do I need to circle back to you to help you protect her?"
"No I sent her outside, I told her to wait for us in the Jeep. It shouldn't be too long before we are done. I just have to clear the med bay before I get to the control room. She should be fine, she was like you a fighter, brave."
"James now is not the time for sentiment. We are on a mission, let's finish the mission then we can reminisce." Natasha huffed entering the ballet studio with her weapon drawn.
"Good point. I'm going dark, clearing med bay now." Bucky finished and Natasha didn't respond. she was too stunned by the sight in front of her.
"Well hello Natalia. It seems the years have been friendly to you." Yelena Belova steps out of the shadows and into the center of the room. Yelena was one of the girls Natasha was friends with in the Red Room, only she looked much older than Natasha, despite being almost forty years younger.
"Yelena? What are you doing here? I thought you got out." Natasha asked furious.
"Oh no I never did. It was only to test your loyalty and strength to the organization, to us. It seems even though you passed the test you still failed like you always do. You are a failure Natalia. I am the success, I am the new madame B." Yelena said maniacally.
"Yelena. I know what you may think, but you can still walk away from this. Just step out of the way and run. I won't look for you, you don't have to do this."
"Oh, but you see Natalia that there lies the difference between you and me. You always saw what we did as a duty, a job, I on the other hand saw it as a pleasure, something I loved to do. That is why you will always fail. I mean didn't you fail at keeping your precious Elizabeth safe?" She asked with a sickening sweetness in her voice.
Natasha had kept her calm and her composure at every moment right up until Yelena said Elizabeth's name. When Yelena finished Natasha went into a frenzy. She charged her and landed a firm kick to Yelena's sternum effectively knocking the wind out of her, but Natasha didn't stop there. She landed a flurry of punches and kicks to Yelena until her face was so bloody and bruised you could barely tell who she was.
Yelena might have been broken and battered and she knew that she was already beat, but she wanted to say one last thing before Natasha left the room. "I'm so surprised that what made you come back was the death of a child." Yelena sat up and coughed out blood. "She wasn't even yours, had she lived long enough we would have taken her from you anyway. I personally am glad that she died. I didn't want to have to raise a Romanova child, I didn't want to raise the heir of a traitor."
Natasha had almost walked out of the door but had frozen when Yelena began to speak. When Yelena began deliriously laughing at Natasha when she turned around and saw the fury in her face is when Natasha walked over to Yelena who was still on the floor.
"Oh look at that, it seems poor mommy widow misses her baby. Are those tears I see coming out of your eyes? Wow! You really have gone soft, it's a shame, we were planning to take you and the kid back, but now I see that it really was for the best. I'm glad that I was the one who "forgot" to give you your neutralizers."
Natasha finished the walk over to her with tears of fury coming down her face. Natasha walked over to where Yelena was now sitting up. Natasha stuck her hand out and gripped Yelena by the throat and raised her over her head, effectively cutting off Yelena's oxygen supply and delivered a monologue of her own.
"You know Yelena those are tears that are coming out of my eyes, they are tears of sadness that I will only get to watch the life fade from your eyes once as I choke the life out of you. I should've known, I really should've, maybe you're right, maybe I am getting soft, but just remember you weren't strong enough to stop me. You never were, never will be. I hope for your sake that you never even think of me or my daughter when you go back to whatever hell you came from, because if you do, I will personally do more to you than the devil ever could." Natasha said with such passion you couldn't help, but feel fear. When she finished she threw the limp dead body against the wall for good measure. When Natasha saw the blood on her hands she smiled, she was avenging her daughter, this is what she was meant to do and walked over to the control room to take down the rest of the Red Room with Bucky.
She and Bucky opened the doors that led into the control room at the same time and shut them the same. There was no one left in the control room, there was no one left to fight for the Red Room.
"You've been busy." Bucky commented looking Natasha up and down.
"You're one to talk." She responded with a smirk.
"Come on let's finish up. I need to go check on my judgement call. You take the doors on your side, I'll take the ones on mine."
Natasha opened the first three doors and found nothing on her side so moved to last one on her side after throwing a grenade into each of the rooms, two were vacant dormitories, one was the torture chamber that they had often put Natasha and Bucky in as a form of punishment. Natasha waited for Bucky to finish his side but he stopped at the third door.
"Oh my god!" He exclaimed.
"What? What is it?" Natasha said starting to come over.
"No! No! Nothing! It's fine keep moving! We have work to do!" Bucky shouted and quickly threw a grenade in before Natasha could see the room full of children's corpses who had been put through experimentation and torture. Natasha took his word for it and went to the final door that they had decided they were going to do it together. They knew what was behind the door and needed each other to get through it.
Bucky opened the door and Natasha paused and took a breath before glancing in it check for any children then ducking back out quickly. They had just opened the door to where the brainwashing machine and experimentation devices were. What Natasha didn't notice on her glance was the incubator for babies in the corner, or the sleeping baby that was inside of it. Bucky pulled the pin on the grenade and gave it to Natasha to throw in, once she did he immediately closed the door and the grenade went off, but a newborn baby's cries could be heard.
"Did you hear that?" Natasha nearly screamed panicked. Bucky heard it too and rushed back to the door to open it and retrieve whatever child was crying, but Natasha beat him to it and ran into the flames at full speed when he opened the door.
Natasha searched and found the incubator in the corner slightly disheveled, but with the baby still inside and screaming. Natasha grabbed it and ran out of the room that was quickly filling with smoke and used her body to shield the child from the flames. Bucky was standing at the door waiting for Natasha to make sure she didn't collapse because of the smoke.
"Natasha! Natasha! Are you OK?" He screamed as Natasha violently coughed, but still held the child to her chest.
"I'm fine! We need to get out of here! I don't know what happened! I thought it was empty!"
"Natasha it's fine. Let's go let's get out of here!" He screamed.
"Wait. I can't cover you and hold the kid at the same time!" Natasha screamed looking for a solution and finding one in her backpack. Natasha dumped the weapons, magazines, and grenades on to the control room floor, put the still crying baby into the backpack and put the backpack on gently while drawing her weapon.
"OK. I'm good let's go! If we leave these here it'll start an explosion from the fire and the building will colapse!" Natasha screamed pointing to the weapons. Bucky took notice and did the same thing, only leaving a trail of ammunition so that they could ensure the entire building would be engulfed in flame.
Bucky and Natasha both took off at a sprint once the job was done and only barely made it out before the first explosion started. When Natasha and Bucky exited the building they found more bodies than they had left when they went in and all of the new ones had arrow in them.
