Part 43

Third person point of view:

"Clint. You know I love you right, but you need to go upstairs and take a shower. Bruce will be down any minute and I promise I won't leave Natasha. You need to shower, you are starting to smell." Pepper said after she sat down opposite of him and turned on the T.V.

"But it's her birthday. I don't want to leave her, I don't want her to wake up and me not be here and her freak out."

"OK. Well because it's her birthday you should go and shower. You'll be gone for fifteen minutes at the most, and you'll feel better and smell better for her when she wakes up." Pepper said trying to convince him.

"OK. You're right. I mean what is the likelihood of her waking up while I'm gone. OK. I'll be back in fifteen minutes." Clint said getting up to leave. After Clint left Pepper put up a few pictures and a sign that said 'Happy Birthday Natasha!'. When Pepper sat back down there was a news report on, speculating the stability of the avengers so Pepper changed the channel to a home improvement show and began to have a small conversation with the still unconscious Natasha.

"Hey Nat. So it's me again, Pepper. So we're all really worried for you because you've been asleep for a really long time now. We're all scared and we all really need you. It's your birthday today, but I'm sure you already knew that, you always hated your birthday unless Clint was around. Hey Natasha you really need to wake up because we all need you especially Clint, and we have to tell you something." Pepper said stopping because the door was opening and Bruce appeared.

"Morning Pepper. Where's Clint? He never leaves Natasha." Bruce said coming in with his morning coffee.

"I finally convinced him to take a break and go take a shower. He won't be gone for long. Hey Bruce can you watch Natasha?" Pepper said taking her vibrating phone out of her pocket to see that Tony was calling her so she went to just outside the wing to take the call. After Pepper left Bruce sat down at his desk and started on his work as usual. He was still looking for the reason why the baby had died and had still not found the cause. After about five minutes a couple of Natasha's monitors had started beeping so Bruce walked over to check on her.

Bruce looked at the heart rate monitor and noticed that it was rising steadily. He then looked over Natasha and went to listen to her heart when she opened her eyes and started thrashing. She was pushing Bruce away and trying to take the tubes out of her throat and mouth that were helping her to breath when she was in a coma.

"Natasha? Natasha? Can you hear me? It's Bruce. I need you to calm down you're going to rip your stitches." Bruce said while trying to take out some of the tubes. Bruce's words upset Natasha even more when she looked at her stomach and noticed that her baby bump was no longer there. She began to fight Bruce and scream, while still trying to remove the tubes and devices.

"Shit! Shit! Shit! She's panicking. Jarvis call Clint and Bucky! Pepper get in here!" Bruce screamed while trying to subdue Natasha. "Natasha you're safe I promise. It's me Bruce. You're in New York, you're in Avengers tower. You're safe, please calm down. Jarvis where is Clint!"

"I am trying to reach him, but he removed his hearing aids. Pepper is coming now and Sergeant Barnes is on the way."

"Natasha look at me. You're safe. It's me Bruce. If you stop moving I can take the tube out. Stop moving and I will take the tube out!" Bruce yelled trying to get her attention and trying to stop her from clawing at her face.  She stopped thrashing marginally, but it was enough for Bruce to remover the tube from her mouth and throat. When he got it out she went into a major coughing spasm and Pepper finally came in.

"Natasha you're safe I swear. It's me Bruce. Stop fighting me, I'm trying to help you. You need to calm down." Bruce said still yelling while Natasha was coughing and pushing him away when she had finally caught her breath enough to speak she was nearly screaming.

"What did you do to her? Where is she? Where am I? What's going on. Don't touch me. Don't touch me." Natasha said pushing Bruce away, not recognizing where she was or who she was with. Bruce was still coming towards her so Natasha punched him in the nose to get him to back away.

"Oww. OK. Nat it's me, Bruce, you need to calm down. You're safe, you're with the Avengers. It's me, Bruce Banner, Clint's here, he's on his way. Pepper's here too, she's your best friend." Pepper came into Natasha's line of sight and she slowed her thrashing.

"Natasha it's me. Your safe. I won't let them hurt you. They won't hurt you. Bucky and Clint are coming right now. You're safe. We just need you to calm down so you don't hurt yourself." Pepper said very calmly using the same voice she used with Tony when he had panic attacks.

"What happened? What did you do? Where is she? She was inside of me and now she's not and now I have stitches. What happened?" Natasha said panicked and taking off the bandages to reveal the nearly entirely healed stitches.

"Don't touch those they aren't entirely healed yet. You went into labor Nat." Bruce said coming over to look at the stitches to make sure she hadn't ripped any while holding a tissue to his nose.

"Natalia!" Bucky said bursting through the door and startling Natasha so she was back on her guard when Bruce was nearly next to her.

"Winter! What did they do to me? Where is she?" Natasha yelled in Russian when she saw him which caused Bruce to back away.

"Shhh. They saved you. You're safe. Let them help you. They won't hurt you. Calm down, you're safe." Bucky answered back in Russian while coming up to her bedside very slowly.

"Where am I? What happened? I can't remember anything. Don't touch me." Natasha said switching back to English while still trying to fight Bruce.

"Natasha you need to calm down and let them help you. You're in America, in New York, you're safe and so is the baby. There were complications and you were in a coma. You need to let them help you." Bucky said softly to calm her.

"A coma?" She asked hoarsely and her fighting had all but stopped.

"Yeah you've been out for a while. We've all been worried, what's the last thing you can remember?" Bucky asked trying to keep her calm.

"The Avengers got called out on a mission, it was early and Clint had to go. I was setting up the nursery and he kissed me goodbye and I felt the baby move a lot and it hurt. Then I think I went to eat with Pepper and I think my water broke. My water broke! My little girl should be here now, where she? Is Clint with her? Did I have to have a c-section? That would explain the stitches and why I was asleep." Natasha said unsure at first, but then brightening when she realized what happened.

"Well Natasha. Clint's on his way..." Pepper said getting interrupted by Natasha's excitement.

"Oh did Clint make it in time? I know how worried he was about making it. Oh man I can't wait to see her. How big is she? Oh she's probably tiny. Bruce did I get her back up to normal size before she was born? Oh and sorry about punching you in the face."

"Natasha, Clint's coming. He'll explain everything when he gets here. He is the one best qualified to do it. I'm going to go call Tony and let him know you're awake. Bucky do you want to call Steve?" Pepper said holding back the tears and emotions to put on a smile for Natasha. Bucky followed Pepper out of the room and Natasha and Bruce were left alone.

"Happy birthday Natasha." Bruce said awkwardly once everyone else had left.

"What do you mean happy birthday? My birthday isn't for another week unless you're trying to say happy giving birth day."

"Umm. I don't know..." Bruce said oddly but was saved when Clint opened the door and rushed over to Natasha.

"Tasha baby! You're awake! Oh thank god. I've missed you." Clint exclaimed coming over and kissing Natasha on the lips.

"Yeah I'm awake. It's not a big deal, I had a c-section. Now come on enough about me, I want to see her. Where is she? Where's Elizabeth?" Natasha said with a confused smile.

"Tasha..." Clint said with his voice cracking. He let go of all of the emotions that he had been holding in for the past week and cried while holding and kissing Natasha's hand.

"Clint. What happened?" Natasha asked in a deadly serious tone while Bruce disappeared out of the door.

Clint looked up at her and whispered with tears streaming down his face. "She was stillborn. You were in a coma for a week. I thought I lost you too."

Natasha let her face go blank and looked up at the ceiling, she ran her hand over the nearly healed stitches and tried to stop the tears that were coming out of her eyes. She made herself unreachable to the world after a few seconds and the tears had stopped. Clint knew what was happening but was too distressed to stop it. After he had composed himself he tried to get her back from the place that she had gone.

"Natasha. Natasha listen to me this isn't the end I swear to you it isn't. We can find something else, we can adopt a baby or a puppy or a kitten, or we could go back to work, or we could just run off and quit S.H.I.E.L.D and no one would find us. Natasha this isn't the end we're gonna be OK we just need time. Everything is going to be alright I promise you Natasha." Clint said trying to bring her back.

"But Clint it's not. It's not OK. And it's not going to be alright. She was our daughter, we were going to be parents, I was going to be a mother. I was going to be a mom, and now that's all gone." Natasha said looking at him hopelessly.

"Natasha I promise you..."

"Don't promise me Clint." Natasha said slightly angry.

"OK. I'm going to give you some time. I'll bring you some clothes, there's a shower down here for you to take one. I can help you or have Pepper help you." Clint said getting up and exiting and Natasha fell back into herself and her own little world. She didn't notice Bruce come in and she didn't care when he examined her. He asked her questions, but she couldn't form responses. She stared at the ceiling for a long time to try and avoid looking at all of the baby equipment that surrounded her. Clint came in a little while later and brought her some clothes without saying anything and left again after staring at Natasha for a long time trying to read her.

Natasha laid in her bed for a few more minutes pushing away the feelings and trying to feel numb. After a while it stopped working so she sat up and tried to get out of bed.

"Natasha! What the hell do you think you're doing?" Bruce yelled running over to try and get her to lay back down.

"I'm done laying here. I'm getting up and I'm going to take a shower." Natasha said pushing Bruce away and fighting through the pain of sore muscles and stiff joints and the searing pain that was running through her incision sight.

"Natasha you just woke up like two hours ago. I just took your feeding tube out and I took out your I.V's five minutes ago. You're not in any condition to be getting out of bed. And you're still trying to get out of bed. What're you doing?"

"I told you. I'm getting out of bed." Natasha hissed.

"Oh my god you're an idiot. Hold on one second I need to get something and someone before you stand up." Natasha then paused for Bruce to retrieve Pepper from outside and a bucket from one of the cabinets.

"OK. Pepper stand on one side of Natasha and hold her hair back when she stands up. I'll get the other side."

"Bruce I'm fine I don't need help." Natasha said slightly out of breath from the pain, but standing up anyways. When Natasha stood Bruce and Pepper had to grab her and hold her to keep her from falling when she stood mostly on her own but using Bruce and Pepper for support she started mumbling.

"I'm going to puke." She mumbled over and over again until Bruce gave her the bucket and she emptied her stomach contents into it.  "Oh my god I feel like shit." Natasha said after she had finished throwing up.

"See I told you. This is why you shouldn't have got up. Why the hell does no one listen to me when I give them medical advice?" Bruce said annoyed and walking over to his desk to get something.

"Bruce I don't think now is the time to be taking your frustrations out on Natasha." Pepper said because she was unsure of Natasha's mental state. "Nat honey? Do you want me to help you go take a shower?" Pepper said very softly and with care.

Natasha shook her head and said, "No. I'm fine. I just need help walking over there." as she leaned into Pepper to help her walk. When they made their way into the shower Pepper gave Natasha a towel and closed the door and quickly called in Sam, Tony, and Rhodey who were all waiting outside.

"OK. Here's the deal. You guys are going to get out every single piece of equipment that is in this room that was supposed to be used on the baby. Nat can't see it right now and it's not good for her. Bruce you are going to go to you're room and go to sleep because you haven't slept in god knows how long. No protesting either. Natasha is awake we have it from here and if anything happens we'll come get you." Pepper said taking charge and giving everyone their orders.

Natasha was in the shower for a long time. Long enough for the boys the remove the equipment, Bruce to go back to his room and fall fast asleep and for Pepper to change the sheets on Natasha's bed. When she came out Tony immediately noticed that she was struggling and rushed over to help her.

"OK. Everyone out. I need to talk to Natasha for a minute." Tony said going over to help her because he knew how much Natasha hated looking weak in front of the other Avengers. Everyone including Pepper filed out quickly and Tony helped Natasha back into bed.

"Natasha. I know you're in pain why did you get out of bed? It's not worth it. You're just going to make yourself worse." Tony said with genuine worry and concern for Natasha.

"I'm fine Tony. I don't want to talk."

"But Natasha that wasn't smart. What would you have told me if I did the same thing?"

"Tony. I told you. I don't want to talk."

"Fine then just listen. Today's your birthday. I'm assuming you already know that."

"Tony I don't care." Natasha said very coldly.

"Well too bad because I got you a gift anyway." Tony said going over to Bruce's desk and bringing over a wrapped package. When he sat it down on the bed he said. "Go on open it."

"Tony I don't want a birthday present. I don't want anything right now." She said trying to give it back to him.

"No Nat it's your birthday you need to open your birthday present come on."

"Tony I don't want it."

"God dammit Natasha! Just open the damn gift. You mean so much to me and I was terrified the entire time you were asleep and I never thought that I was going to be able to give you this so just open the damn present. You'll like it." Tony said getting upset and letting some tears come down his face he took a deep breath and continued after seeing Natasha not move. "Natasha you mean so much to me. You've been there for me for years and I haven't been there enough for you. I'm sorry. I care about you so much because you're like my little sister and I love you. I want you to be safe and I want you to have everything that you want in life. So Natasha just please open the gift. I need you to know that you know that I care about you."

Natasha finally moved to take the paper off of the gift and had a blank look on her face. She took all of the paper off of the gift. When it was fully unwrapped Natasha took a deep breath but didn't say anything when she looked at it. It was a family portrait of all of the Avengers, including Fury, Coulson, and Maria. It was taken before Natasha had gotten pregnant and it was a reminder of happier times. Natasha didn't fully remember taking the picture because of how crazy her life had gotten so it was a surprise to see it again.

"Tony. Why do you care about me so much?" Natasha asked with her voice full of self loathing.

"Why do I care about you so much? Are you serious right now? How could I not care about you, you're my family and you have been since the day you walked into the Malibu house. You've been my family since you walked into that house like you owned the place, put up with my antics, Pepper fell in love with you, and then on top of it all you kicked Happy's ass. You're strong, you're smart, you care. You are my family Natasha and that will never change. I love you like a sister because that is basically what you are. You protect me from anyone and everyone you'll drop anything because I call you and I say I need help. You don't give up when I push you away and most of all you've saved my life too many times to count."

"Natasha we all love you here and we need you. This past week has been a living hell for all of us and we need you on this team and we need you in this family. You're kind, sweet, loving, strong, persistent, amazing, awesome. I'm running out of adjectives to describe you because you are indescribable. I love you Natasha because you're my sister and you are my family."

While Tony was talking Natasha was getting more and more agitated. In her head she was turning everything that he said into lies. She was saying that no one could or would care about her because of everything that she had done. She was repeatedly shaking her head and trying to stop the tears coming out of her eyes. When Tony finished she finally burst.

"Get out! Get out right now! Leave!" Natasha screamed at him.

"Natasha..."

"Get out! You're no better than they are get out!" Natasha yelled slightly hysterical and Tony made his way to the exit quickly before his presence sent her into a full blown panic attack.

The they that Natasha was screaming about was the Red Room because they had told her nearly the same things but they were simply using Natasha trying to get her to stay with the Red Room longer. Tony was trying to do the opposite he was trying to get Natasha to see how much she really mattered to him, but she was too upset to try and comprehend that.

After Natasha's outburst Tony sat outside her room for a while and told Jarvis to give him updates on her condition. While he sat there he let the tears flow freely. They were tears of relief and tears of sadness for his sister, Natasha. After he had composed himself enough he went to go tell Clint and everyone else that they shouldn't go down to see Natasha because he had upset her when he was trying to make things better. After he told everyone he grabbed Pepper and a well rested Bruce to go pack for Natasha.

"Tony what are we doing in Clint and Natasha's room?" Pepper asked annoyed and confused.

"Natasha isn't going to stay. As soon as she gets back on her feet she's going to leave and I'm assuming that is either going to be tonight or tomorrow based on what Jarvis has been telling me. We need to pack her go bag with everything that she could need while she is gone and we need to get rid of all of the baby stuff that she had packed." Tony said getting out Natasha's duffel bag and backpack that she took on missions and always had sitting by the door in case she needed to make a quick escape.

"Wait what do you mean Natasha isn't going to stay? Where is she going to go?" Bruce asked confused and mad.

"Natasha has hiding places and resources all over the world and we won't be able to find her until she wants to be found." Tony said getting out clothes from Natasha's drawers and dumping the ones that were in the bags onto the floor.

"Tony. Tony. Slow down. You're starting to scare me. What happened? What's going on?" Pepper said taking a hold of Tony's arms and forcing him to look at her.

"I pissed her off when I was trying to convince her to stay because she means so much to us and she means so much to me. Now I know for a fact that she is going to leave because she hates herself so much and doesn't think that she deserves to have anything. I tried to convince her otherwise, but I couldn't. So I need to show her that I love her and care about her and the only way I know how to do that is to prepare her for when she leaves!" Tony said yelling again and letting a few tears fall down his face which he quickly wiped away.

"OK. OK. We'll do it. What does Nat need?" Pepper asked trying to calm Tony down. They got to work and by the time they had finished Jarvis had announced that Natasha had fallen asleep.

"Good she's not leaving tonight, so that means we'll have a chance to stop her before she leaves in the morning." Tony said sitting down to think.

"It's all done Tony. I got the enhancers and everything she could need medical wise packed up. You said you had clothes and weapons and Pepper got stuff to remind her that she always has something to come back to. We've got everything, we should go to sleep." Bruce said sitting down next to Tony.

"You guys should go. Go get some sleep. I'll be fine. I'm going to stay up here in case Natasha tries to sneak out in the middle of the night. I'm going to try and stop her because this is the only other exit other than the jet exit, and if she takes that I'll try and catch her in my suit." Tony said prodding Bruce and Pepper. They both knew that they weren't going to win that fight with Tony so they both let it go and went to sleep in their respective rooms.

Natasha slept horribly. She woke up every hour or so because of the nightmares. First it was of her being recaptured by the red room, then it was of Clint dying because of her, next it was the team and S.H.I.E.L.D abandoning her, but the one that ended up waking her up was one in which she had lost the baby and it was her fault. She couldn't get the dream out of her head when Bruce came to check on her at six in the morning and she had noted that she had been awake for almost three hours.

"Morning Natasha. I'm going to check on you is that OK?" Bruce said cautiously walking over to Natasha noticing the dazed look in her eyes.

Natasha looked at him and nodded. He walked over and did his exam. Natasha then whispered only loud enough for Bruce to hear. "It was my fault wasn't it Bruce? It was my fault we lost Elizabeth, right?"

"What? No. I mean Natasha you can't blame yourself it wasn't." Bruce said tripping over his words.

"Don't bullshit me Bruce. Was it my fault?"

"Natasha. I don't know. I really don't."

"Where is she?" Natasha said angrily around the lump in her throat.

"Natasha I don't think that's a good idea. You don't need that right now."

"Bruce I need to see her. Please."

"No. Natasha it's not a good idea."

"God dammit Bruce! I need to see her! So either tell me where I can find her or take me to her!" Natasha screamed getting out of bed by herself and ignoring the pain.

"Shit! Fine. I'll take you to her." Bruce said instantly regretting it.

Natasha walked over to Bruce and he led the way. They followed some hallways and went down a couple of flights of stairs to find a cold and sterile looking room. Bruce told Natasha to wait at the door and went off to get something. He returned only a few seconds later with a chair and he called her over to it. Natasha refused to sit and Bruce opened a metal drawer. Lying on the metal slab was the baby. She was wrapped in a pink blanket and had Natasha not known she was already dead she would have thought she was only sleeping. Natasha walked closer to Elizabeth and Bruce followed behind pushing the chair closer. Natasha touched the baby's forehead with her hand and quickly started to shake as her whole body was wracked with sobs. Bruce helped her as Natasha collapsed into the chair with her hand still on the baby's forehead. Bruce was sniffling and trying to hold back his tears to be strong for Natasha.

"Natasha, I don't know what happened to her. I don't know what happened to Elizabeth, but I swear to you I will find out even if it is the last thing I do." Bruce said intensely. Natasha didn't respond, she couldn't take her eyes off of the baby in front of her. After a few minutes Bruce left to give Natasha some privacy to mourn.

Natasha sat and cried until her sobs choked her and she could barely breathe. When she thought she couldn't cry anymore she stood up and composed herself, she dried her eyes, and wiped her nose. She looked at the baby one last time, leaned over, kissed her on the forehead and whispered. "I will love you forever. You will always be with me. I love you Elizabeth, know that your mommy loves you." With that, Natasha turned and closed the drawer and followed the same path that she came down.
