Part 37

Third person point of view:

Pepper rushed into the elevator after Steve came in with Tony following close behind her.

"Jarvis take me to the room." Pepper said as Tony slipped in before the doors closed. The elevator started up and took them to Clint and Natasha's floor before going to the main elevator to take them to the penthouse. Pepper went through the door ignoring Tony the entire time as the tears fell down her face. She made her way to the bar and started getting out the bottles of liquor.

"Pepper, what are you doing?"

"Making myself a drink." She said angrily, while pouring the bottle of scotch into a glass.

Tony responded with a puzzled look and said, "OK. Can you hand me the whiskey please?" Pepper passed it over and poured another serving into her own glass and drank it like a shot. The tears had started to fall more furiously and Tony noticed. "Pepper I know this is hard right now, but it's going to get better."

"No Tony you don't know how hard this is! You don't know what this meant to me and you sure as hell don't know what the baby meant to Natasha!" Pepper screamed while sobbing.

"Pepper..."

"No Tony you don't! This kid was Natasha's everything, she would have done anything for it. You weren't there when Clint was on a mission and she hadn't felt the baby move in two days so she called me sobbing thinking that she had lost it. You weren't there to see her reaction and her relief when Bruce told her that she made it out of the first trimester. You weren't the one teaching her how to hold a baby and her excitement when she finally did it properly."

"Pepper I know how bad you wanted this, but it will get better."

"No Tony you aren't listening! Yes I wanted this kid to be my niece and I wanted my goddaughter, but most of all I wanted Natasha to be happy, I wanted this for Natasha. This kid brought so much joy to her and she wasn't even born yet. I've never seen Natasha as happy as I have seen her for the past seven months. She said this was her and Clint's second chance. Their start at a new life!" Pepper screamed through the sobs and poured herself another drink.

"Natasha said she was going to quit S.H.I.E.L.D, and when Fury told that she couldn't she called me and cried, she said she was going to simply go rouge. I convinced her not to and then she called Clint and he said he was going to quit so the baby could always have at least one parent. Natasha was pissed that it couldn't be her, but she thought that something was better than nothing. She wanted to give the kid the best life she possibly could." Pepper whispered.

"I know, love. I know. We can figure it out, I promise." Tony said soothingly, but he was barely able to keep himself together.

"But Tony it isn't fair! It's not fair that she had to go through all of this! She went through everything that should happen and then she lost it! It's not fair!" Pepper said throwing her glass at the wall then sliding down the cabinet to sit on the floor and sob.

"Pepper!" Tony yelled and rushed around the bar. When he saw her he scooped her up and held her while she sobbed.

"It's not fair Tony." She whispered while crying.

"I know, it's not. I know." Tony said while letting a few tears run down his cheeks. Tony held Pepper until she had cried herself to sleep. After a while he picked her up off of the floor and carried her to their bed. He laid with her for a while but sleep couldn't come to him so he got out of bed, careful not to wake Pepper and made his way to the roof.

"Coulson you have the gifts, right?" Fury asked as he drove through the city traffic to get to the tower.

"Yes Nick. Did Tasha have the baby yet or is she still in labor?" Coulson asked

"I don't know Pepper stopped updating me about two hours ago. The last thing I know of Clint still wasn't there and Bruce wanted Natasha to start pushing, but she was being stubborn." Nick said answering the same question for the third time.

"My question is why we had to stay in that meeting for so long. Why couldn't we get here earlier?" Maria asked as they pulled into the tower's parking lot.

"We can't raise suspicion. The council was already pissed that Clint and Cap left the mission before it was over." Fury said annoyed. They walked into the tower with their gifts and made their way down to the delivery room. They saw Sam and Fury in the waiting room.

"Where is everyone? Are they in the room? Come on, where's my grandbaby? I want to hold her!" Fury exclaimed happily when he saw them. Bruce heard and came out of the delivery room.

"Nick, you're here." Bruce said surprised.

"What did you really think that I'd miss this? Come on where is everyone? I want to see my grandbaby!" Fury said still blissfully oblivious.

"Nick," Bruce paused to take a breath. "the baby was stillborn. There were complications, Nat's..." Bruce trailed off.

"Dr. Banner, Nat's what?" Coulson asked deadly serious.

"Nat's in a coma. I'm pretty sure she's going to make it through the night, but I don't know when she's going to wake up."

Fury gave a look of shock and made his way through the closed door to find Bucky still sitting by Natasha's bedside, giving her another blood infusion. Bruce tried to stop Fury but was overpowered, and Maria and Coulson followed.

"Where is Clint?" Fury asked Bucky with an air of hatred.

"Don't know. He left after Natasha went into surgery. I haven't heard anything from that piece of shit since." Bucky responded not looking away from Natasha

"Fuck! Maria, find him, and bring him back to me alive. Get rid of those gifts while you're at it." Fury ordered angrily.

"Yes sir." Maria said leaving the room. Coulson walked over to Natasha's bed but when he got close Bucky gave him a death glare and he backed away.

"I'll figure out where Clint is. He couldn't have gone too far." Coulson said following the same path as Maria. Fury didn't look away from Natasha the entire time. When Nick felt he had seen enough he walked over to Bruce who was surrounded by holograms.

"Bruce, how close did we get?"

"It was pretty fucking close. I haven't been that close since New York, but we're good now." Bruce said with a chuckle.

"Are we going to make it through the night without..."

"I'll be fine. I've got Nat to take care of and this issue to figure out, plus coffee, so helpful." Bruce said the last part sarcastically.

"Bruce, what happened?" Fury asked sincerely.

"Nick, I don't fucking know! I don't know what went wrong or what happened. Helen had no clue and Bucky kept threatening her so I sent her home. There is no logical explanation that I can think of and I'm looking into everything." Bruce said gesturing to the holograms.

"Bruce this wasn't your fault, you can't blame yourself for this because that won't help anyone."

"But Nick, I don't know if it's my fault and I'm not going to stop until I figure out exactly what happened. I need to know." Bruce said getting slightly unsettled again.

"Fine." Fury said not finding any reason to fight with him. "I'll be back. I'm going to find Nat's fuck up of a husband before someone else kills him, before I get to. Tell me the moment anything changes with Natasha." Nick announced and turned to leave with his jacket billowing behind him. In the elevator he ran into Tony.

"Stark, do you know where Barton is?"

"Not a clue. He had an outburst and left. I can't say I blame him, we were all over him with questions he couldn't take it anymore." Tony said not paying much attention and Fury grunted with displeasure. Fury got off on the main floor and Tony continued up to the roof.

"Mr. Stark it's almost two in the morning, you should try and get some sleep." Jarvis said once Tony was on the roof.

"I tried J. I can't. I don't know what to do. Can you take the cover off?" Tony asked. The cloaking unveiled itself and an elaborate playground was revealed.

"You know, I made all of this for her. It was going to be our little hide away when she got in trouble." Tony said with a sad smile.

"Yes sir, I know."

"I was going to make her an armor. I was thinking pink and maybe purple or blue. I feel like she would have loved the color blue."

"Sir, is this really the best idea?"

"I don't know J, I don't know anything anymore. I can't believe I actually thought I was going to get to be a godfather. Nat and Clint trusted us with her life and there was nothing we could do, nothing." Tony said sitting on a bench and letting the tears fall.

"Sir none of this is your fault."

"No J, it isn't but I should have thought of something. I should have come up with a contingency plan, I should have done more. I should have been there for them more, maybe it would have changed something." Tony said starting to cry more intensely.

"Sir, there is nothing anyone could have done. Things happen for a reason, you're the one who always says that."

"But J, I wanted this." Tony whispered in between sobs. "Nat and Clint wanted this. Pepper wanted this, Bruce and Bucky and everyone wanted this!" Tony screamed.

"I know sir."

"It's not fair J, it's not fair." Tony whispered into the night while sobbing.
