Susie pulled you into her bedroom. She flopped down on her bed and picked up a remote control. She pressed a button and turned on a small television mounted on the wall.
"Any preferences? Favorite shows? Genres?" she asked you. It occurred to you that you had no idea what channels they got here.
"No, just throw on whatever you want."
"Okie doki." Susie scrolled through the channels, looking for something worth watching. "Ugh, nothing good ever plays anymore." She turned the tv off and slumped backwards.
"Well, we could always just play a game or something. How about truth or dare?"
"Ohhhh my goddddd noooooo! That's way too cliche for my liking."
"Fine, how about 20 questions?" Susie sighed.
"Still cliche, but better. Fine. I'll go first. Why did you move here?"
"Oh, easy. I was born here, and spent my childhood here, as you know. I loved it here. I was heartbroken when I learned that I was moving, and even more so when I learned that my mother wasn't coming with us. My parents ended up splitting up, which only made me more homesick. As I got older, I began to resent my mother because she was never a good mom for me or a good wife for my dad. He didn't deserve to deal with her. She ended up selling our house and moved to the city. But this year, she got a really good job offer in this town, and so she bought back our old house. She reached out to my dad and told him about it, so he asked if I wanted to move back. I didn't hesitate until I learned that he wouldn't be coming with me. In the end, I ended up moving back, and my dad headed back to Middleville. I miss him a lot." Susie nodded a little sadly.
"That's unfortunate. But if you knew your mom wasn't a good person, why did you move back?"
"I thought that my old childhood friends would still like me. I remembered so many good things about this place. I didn't realize how much had changed over the 10 years I had been gone. I mean, it still looks the same, it's just... I thought that I'd be fine as long as Adrien and Avery were still here, and as long as Charlotte still cared. I figured I could put up with my mom as long as I could pick up where I left off."
"But you didn't."
"Right. But judging by what I've heard, that's not necessarily a bad thing. It seems like I'd just end up getting used anyway. I'd rather hang out with someone who isn't scared to be herself." I looked at her pointedly.
"Heh, yeah..." She looked away and tugged at one of her sleeves. Your eyebrow furrowed.
"Are you okay?"
"Uh, yeah, I'm fine. Just, uh, got a tickle in my throat."
"Are you sure?"
"Just drop it, god!" Susie snapped at you. You flinched away from her. Her eyes widened. " I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-"
"No, it's fine. I shouldn't be so pushy. If you don't want to talk about it, I shouldn't force you to." Susie sighed again.
"Look... About what you said, about the whole "not afraid to be herself" thing... I... That's not true. I'm only ever really myself around you and Kris. I tried once, and people just called me a freak. Have you noticed that I tend to be more on edge at school? I'm... I'm actually terrified of everyone there. That's why I haven't done anything to try and convince people that I'm not a dangerous person. It's easier to be feared than to be open. One thing you and Kris have in common is that you both saw right through my act. I tried to scare Kris away from me so many times, but it never worked. I ended up getting attached to her, and now we're friends. But it's different with you. If I found out Kris made fun of me when I was younger, she'd be out of my life immediately. But you... I got home from school yesterday and all I could think about was how upset you looked when I yelled at you. I felt so bad. I tried to get your out of my head, but I couldn't do it. I couldn't face you in school today, so I decided to skip. I told my dad that I felt like shit, and so he let me stay home. Turns out I was gonna have to face you regardless, but I'm glad I did."
You sat in silence for a little ago before Susie piped up. "Oh, it's your turn."
"Right. Uhh... So you have a pet?"
"Yeah actually!" Her eyes sparkled. "I have a little white pupper. He's in the back yard right now. His name is Toby."
"Really!? You have a doggo and you never said anything about it!?"
"Do you wanna go play with him?"
"Absolutely!" Susie led you down the stairs and into the backyard. You looked around and spotted a tiny white fluffball near the fence. His head popped up and he yipped, tail swishing back and forth rapidly. He ran up and pounced on you, and began licking your face aggressively.
"Hey Toby! Come here, boy!" Susie cooed from beside you. Toby jumped down and ran in circles around you.
"Toby! Fetch!" Susie launched a stick across the yard. It bumped off of the top of the fence and directly over it. Toby ran up and hopped right over the fence. He just kept running, completely forgetting about the stick.
"Oh shit!" Susie ran back inside. You followed after her. "Dad, Toby jumped over the fence again! I'm going to go get him!"
You ran outside together and spotted a small white blur racing down the road.
"There he is!" you said in unison.
While running after the dog, you felt a few raindrops on your head. You looked up and saw dark clouds gathering above.
"Look out!" You looked back to where you were going and saw a huge tree directly in front of you. Susie yanked your arm to the side, and you crashed into her. She had saved you.
"Thanks." You both turned and kept running.
"TOBY! TOBY, COME BACK!" Susie yelled as she quickened her pace. You were beginning to gain on the dog. Around you, the rain got heavier. It was now fully raining.
Beside you, you saw Susie trip and fall. You stopped to help her up, but she motioned for you to keep going. "GO ON WITHOUT ME, DON'T LET HIM GET AWAY!" You nodded at her and kept running.
As you kept going, Toby began to slow down. Seeing the oppertunity, you leaped out and launched yourself through the air. You felt your hands grab onto something soft shortly before slamming into a giant pile of mud. You pulled you head up and saw Tony in your arms, yipping happily. You laughed happily as he picked your face. You saw Susie round the corner and run up to you.
"You got him!" Susie laughed at the muddy dog and helped you to your feet. In the middle of a mud puddle during a torrential downpour, Susie pulled you close to her. She pressed her soft lips to yours as Toby licked her chin. You smiled into the kiss as you felt the early morning sunlight of the empty classroom from your first day to fill the air.
Susie pulled away, and you returned to reality. You and Susie both gasped for breath as you smiled at one another.
"We're all wet," you laughed.
