how easy it is
Light filled your vision. The sun shone into your room on your third day home. At this point, everything had gone so wrong, you were beginning to question if you really were returning home, or if you were invading upon a world in which you never belonged in the first place. Maybe there was a reason you left.
"(Y/N)! Get your ass out of bed and get dressed! You have school!" your mother screeched from your doorway. You jolted up in your bed, startled. "Good. Now get dressed and get walking, I've got to get to work." She slammed your door shut and headed out the front door. You stood up out of your bed and walked to your window.
Not a single cloud sat in the sky, and the sun shone brightly as the leaves fell gently in the crisp fall breeze. A picture perfect image, almost taken from a magazine. You felt so out of place. You were such a fucking mess.
You slowly backed away from the window and got dressed, not bothering to worry about breakfast. You shoved your hands in your pockets and started walking to school. You stared at your feet for half of the walk, thinking about what you would face. Finally, you decided that having to face Susie after everything that happened yesterday was not something you wanted to do. You found yourself drifting off course toward the park.
This time, instead of climbing a tree, you walked to a nearby park bench and pulled out your phone. You sat there, scrolling through your Deltagram feed for a few minutes before deciding to just head back home. After all, a little extra sleep never hurt anyone. You clicked off your phone, shoved it back into your pocket, and started home.
You turned a corner to see someone walking down the road on the opposite side. You looked closer at the person and screamed at yourself internally for your lack of luck. Susie was walking right towards you, and there wasn't much to hide behind. You prayed that she wouldn't notice you. That's when she turned to walk down the road you were on. She was staring at her phone and hadn't yet noticed you. You turned around to run back down the road when you realized that the road was a dead end. You were screwed.
"Shit!" You said to yourself without thinking. You realized what you may have just done and turned slowly to see Susie staring at you. She froze in place, and you did the same. Neither of you broke eye contact, you just stared at each other.
"H-hi," she said quietly. You nodded in response, afraid of what you'd say if you spoke, or if you even could talk. She waited patiently for a response.
"I-I'm sorry, I know you probably - no, definitely, you definitely hate me - whatever, sorry I'll leave." You tried to walk away, but Susie grabbed your arm as you tried to pass her. You flinched, preparing yourself for Susie to punch you, just as you deserved. However, instead of punching you, she sighed and let you go. She looked at her feet.
"...am I really that scary...?" she asked. Her voice made you die a little as a lump grew in your throat.
"N-no, you aren't - I just- I mean, I would punch me if I found out that I had done that to me, so I just assumed- I mean I deserve it, so..."
"(Y/N), you don't - I was overreacting yesterday. You said that you were scared of what she would do to you if you tried to stop her, and seeing what she did to me, you were justified in that. I need to get my head off of me and think about other people. I'm sorry. I'm a fuck up," Susie said. Your eyes widened in shock.
"What!? No you aren't! If anyone here is a fuck up, it's me! Nothing good has happened to me since I came here." You paused to think for a second. "No, I'm sorry. One good thing happened to me. I met you." Susie's face turned bright scarlet.
"I'd hardly call that a good thing. I'm not really someone you would be happy to know. I'm a horrible mess." You felt the urge to slap some sense into her, but wrapped your arms around her instead. You felt her stiffen up for a second before relaxing and returning the hug. "(Y/N), I'm sorry if I made you feel bad yesterday. I don't hate you, and I really hope you don't hate me."
You pulled the hug tighter. "How could anyone ever hate you, Susie?" She sighed and laughed humorlessly.
"You'd be surprised how easy it is."
