Friends
I needed to lose my conscience. I glared silently at the Friend for Life animal shelter, which seemed to be having a party of some sort.
I took a deep breath and walked into the noisy shelter. As soon as I came in a receptionist immediately approached me.
"Welcome." She said happily "Would you like me to show you around."
"Umm, is there a Karla Johnson here?"
Her face went glum seeing that I wasn't here to adopt. "She is by the dog kennels."
I nodded in thanks and walked away. The building was quite simple and well-labeled, so it was easy to navigate.
As I walked down the corridor I could see why the receptionist was sad. The party that seemed to be going on, was just a big request for adoption.
"Don't worry guys, am sure your forever friends are coming soon."
I had finally reached the dog kennel and saw Karla sitting on the ground with dog treats and surrounded by starry-eyed dogs.
I had never seen her so happy. She glanced around silently muttering something to herself. And then she looked towards me, slightly shocked.
"Lily, come here." I looked down to see a small-sized dog missing an eye looking at me and wagging her tail.
Karla repeated the command and the dog's tail went down as she sadly walked back towards Karla.
"I just want to talk." I said slowly approaching Karla.
Her blue eyes either brought warmth or frost and right now it was a whole lot of cold.
"Help me with the dogs." She said, picking some dogs up and putting them in their cages.
I walked forward and started helping her.
"I won't apologize for the break up because it was overdue." She gave me a quick side eye before going back to the task at hand. "But, I will apologize for judging you too harshly." I said.
The last dog was in, except Lily - the little white furball didn't seem to want to let go of me.
"Apology accepted." She said calmly, sitting back down on the ground.
I sat on the ground next to her and Lily climbed into my lap and happily stroked her.
"I don't believe in love at first sight, because that's just insane." I paused to look at Karla, she seemed calm thus far. "And I also don't believe in taking forever to fall in love."
I stretched out my hand. "Sooo for now, let's be friends."
She shook me back and smiled. "Friends."
She "And I have some apologizing to do as well." She looked down at her shirt. "It wasn't right to threaten you into dating."
"Apology accepted." I replied.
"It seems she likes you." Karla said looking down at Lily.
"It seems I like her too." I looked at Lily "Do you want to be my friend for life?"
Lily barked happily in response and Karla and I laughed happily on the ground in the animal shelter.
