Chapter Twenty Six | I'm the Teacher

I wasn't surprised by the flyers that were handed out on Monday at school. I was more surprised at how early it was being held into the term. I should've signed up to help if I'd known it be over and down with very quickly.

The charity ball was held every year during the first term to raise a donation. The second term held a competition which was usually a treasure hunt of some sort and the third term was just general cake sales. There's wasn't anything major during third term because the events committee were too busy getting the farewell dance, for students in their final year of school.

There was a table set up in a hall near the office where students could buy tickets to attend. There was also boxes where you could put extra donations for those who didn't want to go or just loose change. I don't really feel like going, I better bring some money for those boxes tomorrow.

The school was buzzing about the charity ball. I knew this was the beginning and that the excitement wouldn't be dying out any time soon. I suspect at the end of the week, many teachers won't be able to control the students thus Friday afternoon lessons were usually cancelled. Most girls took that time to get ready if they went. I, on the other hand, can't wait for a long weekend...

Many students were worrying about dresses, shoes and other necessary thing for the ball. Most conversation revolved around such topics throughout the day. Even the guys were worried about their suits.

During my free period, many girls were sitting in clusters around the room with either magazines or phones looking for the perfect dress. Fortunately, I had a jail free card for such conversation. Luck is on my side for now.

Jacob was chewing on the back of his pen as he tried to solve a mathematics problem. We had just gone through the method but he was stuck on one of the steps. I waited patiently to see if he figured it out or asked for my help. Come on, you can do this.

Of course I didn't stare over his shoulder as he worked because I knew how nerve wrecking it could be. Whilst waiting for him, I started playing a bit of Candy Crush to pass the time.

"I give up," he groaned. He sighed and stretched his arms. I don't exactly blame him because it took me a while to get good at this topic.

"I don't see why you get to have all the fun," he whined in reference to Candy Crush.

"It's because I'm the teacher," I teased him.

"Well obviously because I'm too stupid to figure this out," he waved at the work in front of him.

"You're not stupid," I frowned, "we'll do this together and continue until we get it right. For all we know my teaching methods suck," I said before we delved into the problem at hand.

We spent the next 10 minutes doing problems together before I gave Jacob time to do his own. Maybe I rushed by going over only one problem...

I took my phone out once again to finish up my game whilst Jacob worked. I was engrossed in the game that I didn't notice someone approach us. Only three jellies left until I win...

"Ella," Jacob nudged me, breaking my concentration. I looked up to see if he was finished instead he was looking at Emma who cleared her throat.

"Hi, can we talk?" she asked politely. She did glance at Jacob, obviously she wanted to talk in private.

"Sure," Jacob replied for me in an attempt to get away from him work. He got up ready to run.

"Sit down and finish your work," I commanded Jacob. He reluctantly sat down. Oops I'm probably fuelling her wild imagination.

Instead I got up and gestures for Emma to follow me outside the room. Once I thought we were safely away from anyone to overhear our conversation, I stopped. She fidgeted with her clothes and didn't say anything. What did she want to talk about?

"So," I awkwardly said.

"Look, Ella I wanted to talk about what happened last week and-" she started.

"-Is this going to take long? Not to be rude but I'm in the middle of a tutor lesson. Maybe we can talk after school if you're not busy?" I tried to not come across as rude. What can I do? It's the truth.

"Oh sorry, yeah we can talk after school. Where though?" she asked. She obviously had something she wanted to say, it just wasn't the right time.

"At the park. It's quiet and we won't get disturbed. I'll see you after school?"

"Yeah that works." She looked a little bit relieved.

"Sorry but I have to go," I said as I sped walked back to Jacob. She's obviously wants to say something more than she's letting on.

I got back and sat down. Jacob sent me a questioning look but continued to finish his work. It must've been the look I gave him. I take my work seriously and he knew it.

I didn't go back to playing Candy Crush as my mind was a bit occupied at the moment. What actually happened last week aside from our little confrontation? If she only wanted to say sorry wouldn't have that only been a five minute conversation? She obviously has something important to say.

I was deep in thought about what Emma wanted to say when Jacob said, "I'm done."

"Oh, let's see," I shook my head slightly in attempt to clear it. I needed to concentrate on the work at hand. I started to check over Jacob's solutions.

"So... What was that all about?" Jacob attempted to fish for information. He must've noticed my mood shift.

"Nothing important, she just wanted to say sorry for being rude last week," I replied, to close the topic. Jacob gave me a look which said he knew I wasn't telling him everything but let it go because he knew it was none of his business.

Instead I started helping correct the problems, which he got wrong, before we moved onto the next part of the topic. He didn't mention our interruption but you could see he wanted to say more.

I, on the other hand, attempted to push Emma to the back of my mind and continued with the maths. Why couldn't everyone be as easy to solve as maths problems? Logical and precise.

Jacob and I finished our lesson just seconds before the bell rang. I hadn't got up from my seat before Marissa appeared, jumping into Jacob's arms. I greeted her smoothly.

"Hey," she responded politely but I could still see her slight hostile stance. I just merely shrugged at her. She was usually like this.

I reminded Jacob of our next lesson and some work he needed to complete before departing from the lovebirds. He responded quickly obviously distracted by the sight of Marissa. I would just remind him with a text later.

I had more pressing matters to attend to anyway.
