Essential Cleaning Tools: Dustpan and Brush (when was it invented)

Ah the noble dustpan and brush set.... Have you ever thought about when it was invented?

This tool as we know it today, its main purpose is to sweep up of the floor, the dust and debris from the floor, but who had the idea to sweep up the home before you mop anyway?

The dustpan and brush set dates back to the year 1858. The first dustpan was invented by T.E. McNeill an American inventor in 1858 for which he was granted a United States patent. Lloyd P. Ray, an African American made improvements to the dustpan by the addition of a short wooden handle and a collection plate made of metal and this invention was patented in 1897. Bet you never knew that! Now that invention is slightly older than the mop and bucket!

This is used universally in homes, industrial and commercial cleaning. Normally for dust and debris from under couches and tables.

Also, nowadays, these come in a variety of styles and colours as well, the handle of the newer dustpans are longer and yes traveling with it is amazing as it come with you. The dustpan stands upright so that you can brush up all the debris you collect.

To be honest, we are lucky to have the dustpan and brush as well, or our homes would remain in squalor.  Now we're cleaning up our act. (Literally)

Modern dustpans are easily cleaned, as they are on metal poles and made of rubber and plastic. Just use soap if real dirty, or if dusty, use a wet surface cleaning wipe. (Discussed in a later chapter.)

There's 2 types of this cleaning tool.

Type 1: short handled dustpan:

The traditional way of sweeping the floor is by going on your knees, kinda old school don't you think? Would you prefer to be on your feet? Would you prefer to use a dustpan with a longer handle?

Long handled dustpan:

Now this is more modernised, don't you think?
